those stories, plus we take you to the tsunami zone amid concerns the death toll could climb into the thousands. also a wild scene as a police helicopter flies low over a college football tailgate sending tents and debris flying. police defending their action. and an intruder inside president trump's campaign rally. a bat on the loose. good tuesday morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm maggie rulli in for diane macedo. we begin with the investigation into supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. the fbi has now been granted more freedom to look into the sexual misconduct allegations against him but the deadline is still for friday. >> agents interviewed at least four people so far including mark judge, kavanaugh's friend, accused of being in the same room during the alleged sexual assault on christine blasey ford. and overnight the white house

responded to a new report about kavanaugh's alleged involvement in a bar brawl during his college days. >> abc's emily rau has the new details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, the white house has given the green light to the fbi to interview anyone it deems necessary, but last night speaking to a crowd of supporters, president trump made it very clear that he supports kavanaugh. at a campaign rally in tennessee, president trump blasted democrats accusing them of trying to destroy brett kavanaugh. >> they're trying to destroy a very fine person and we can't let it happen. >> reporter: but earlier in the day, the president reversing his initial order strictly limiting the scope of the new investigation. are you saying your white house has put no limitations on -- >> no, my white house is doing whatever the senators want, no, no. my white house will do whatever the senators want. >> reporter: overnight "the new york times" reporting kavanaugh was questioned by police after a

bar fight in 1985 accused of throwing ice at another patron. press secretary sarah sanders calling the story kick louse on twitter. this as more people who claim to know kavanaugh come forward leslie martin-ragsdale, a classmate at yale law. >> you can't be mad or not vote for someone for supreme court justice because they drank in high school but he's lying that he did it legally. >> i was surprised at how vocal he was about the fact that he likes beer. and he's had a little bit of difficulty, i mean, he talked about things that happened when he drank. the interesting thing is, though, nobody asked him about what's happened in the last 25, 30 years during his professional career because there were no bad reports. >> reporter: and late monday republican senator jeff flake who forced the delay and supplemental fbi investigation getting a warm welcome in new hampshire encouraging americans to reach across the aisle. >> tribalism is ruining us.

it is tearing our country apart. the only tribe to which any of us owes allegiance is the american tribe. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says there will be a full senate vote on judge kavanaugh's confirmation this week, but that being said, it is not clear at this point if republicans have the votes they need. kendis, maggie. >> yeah, jeff flake saying he still doesn't know himself. emily rau there in d.c. for us. a new poll shows majority of americans oppose kavanaugh's nomination. but the nation is sharply divided by gender. when it comes to men 49% support kavanaugh while only 40% oppose him but among women, only 37% support his nomination while 55% oppose. it was an emotional night in las vegas where crowds gathered to mark one year since the concert shooting massacre that left 58 people dead. the famous welcome to las vegas sign and marquees along the

strip went dark just after 10:00 p.m. marking the moment gunfire broke out a year ago. earlier a downtown healing garden was officially dedicated. survivors and victims' families paid tribute to the lives lost. president trump has now reaffirmed his commitment to those so-called banning bump stocks like those used by the vegas devices. the devices thabl a semiautomatic weapon to fire like a machine gun and he says that ban is coming soon. students at a high school in georgia are stunned after the death of a football player who suffered a head injury during a game and news of his death comes as a college player in tennessee fights for his life. >> he's an outstanding young man and on the football field. i mean he's just a fighter. >> reporter: a high school coach remembering one of his star players. >> how difficult, coach, is it going to be for the rest of the season? >> it's going to be extremely difficult. i mean it's going to be difficult right now. it's going to be -- i mean it's just hour to hour. it's going to be extremely hard.

>> reporter: 16-year-old dylan thomas died after fighting a brain injury he suffered on the field just south of atlanta. thomas was hit in the second quarter of the game and later collapsed. >> i heard that he was saying that, you know, he wasn't feeling right and then that's when his left leg and left arm went numb and just pretty much fell off the bench. >> reporter: coaches and administrators say they're reviewing the video of the game to try to figure out what happened. flowers now hang on the gate to the playing field where teammates gathered in prayer. >> it meant the world to me. you got guys driving from three hours away to come to see one kid and pray for him. >> reporter: meanwhile, a college player in tennessee remains in critical condition after suffering a head injury. tennessee state's christian abercrombie collapsed on the sideline after a play. >> christian abercrombie, everybody's thoughts and prayers are with him as he's in a nearby hospital. >> reporter: after the game players from both teams gathered at midfield. these cases once again raising questions about head injurieins

and cognitive issues and the degenerative brain disease cte and now on the college level, "the atlanta journal constitution" newspaper found many top college sports programs failed to systemically track concussions their athletes sustain. the coaches are trying to figure out exactly what happened to christian abercrombie. the good news there, doctors say the swelling in his brain has gone down since his surgery. we turn now to the tsunami disaster in indonesia where authorizes fear the death toll could rise higher than the 1200 now already confirmed dead. the powerful surge of water has left some boats stranded on remote streets. rescuers are searching for survivors inside buildings that were leveled. indonesia's military has started evacuation flights today but basic essentials are in short supply. >> the problem here is now there's no water for many people. there's no electricity in many places and food is running

short. so already today we've witnessed scenes of looting and people say they have to do it because if they don't eat, they won't survive. >> reporter: more than 1 million people have been affected by the tsunami and the powerful earthquake that preceded it. well, back here in this country let's take a look now at your weather for this tuesday morning. heavy rain from tropical storm rosa is moving into the southwest including arizona and parts of new mexico, utah and even colorado. more than 11 million people are under flash flood watches with life-threatening floods possible over the next several days along with possible landslides. looking at today's temperatures it'll be 81 degrees in phoenix where it will be wet still and nearly 90 in new orleans and memphis. 77 in new york. great falls already in fall-like temperatures at 49. well, coming up, a breakfast cereal from the '90s

as you know, cop chases in los angeles are a dime a dozen but this one got pretty wild. the driver here abandoning the vehicle, of course, running on foot and carjacked an suv but he didn't get far. a police vehicle rammed the suv stopping the suspect who was arrested along with another suspected gang member. a third man, however, escaped. also in southern california, two deadly plane crashes in two days at the same airport. on monday a pilot was killed after clipping a tree while

landing at bracket field airport. the plane burst into flames. just a day earlier and only a few hundred feet away, a man was killed when a cessna crashed. the pilot had reported engine problems. well, the president is ca calling trade deal to replace nafta a breakthrough for american workers. and canadian and mexican officials do admit and agree it's a win for all three countries. it'll give american farmers greater access to canada's dairy market, and it offers canada some protections if trump imposes tariffs on cars. but americans could see a spike in car prices because the deal requires more auto parts to come from north america. now, congress still has to approve the deal, probably in november, and democrats chuck schumer there -- says the president deserves praise for the deal. more retailers are choosing to stay closed on thanksgiving this year. at least 60 major stores have now said they will not open november 22nd. they include home depot, nordstrom, ikea, costco.

more chains are choosing to give their employees the day off with an increase in online shopping. >> i can get behind that one. all right, here's another reason to make sure your teenagers get enough sleep. a new study confirms that teens who are sleep deprived are more likely to drink and smoke. researchers say teens who sleep an average of less than six hours per night are also more likely to consider suicide. doctors say the study only finds a link between sleep and risky behavior but shows the need to prioritize bedtime. a breakfast favorite from the 1990s is coming back by popular demand and it's one of my favorites. also, the silly rabbit approves. >> silly rabbit, trix are for kids. >> well, general mills is reintroducing trix with fruity shapes. they first hit the market in 1991 but were slowly phased out. the company got 20,000 requests to bring back the fruity shapes. i'e >> yes, that's what we need. >> it's what we want.

>> reporter: that's the smile of a teenager thankful to be alive. >> i think keane is a miracle, and i think that he's very, very, very strong, and he's a survivor now. >> reporter: keane mom emotional after the 13-year-old survived a shark attack over the weekend. >> i just want to tell him that i love him from the bottom of my heart and i am just proud of him and who he is and my family and my sisters and i just feel very lucky. >> reporter: watch the intense moments as rescuers dragged the teen bleeding badly and clinging to life to shore on a kayak. >> i look inside the kayak and i see a young child with blood in his ear. i'm thinking, oh, he must have popped an eardrum. that's why he's screaming and yelling. then i look at him a little bit further and i notice his wet suit is torn and massive trauma of the shoulder, clavicle.

>> i want to say thank you to all three of them. >> reporter: witnesses say the water was filled with blood as the 11-foot shark, possibly a great white, lurked behind the kayak stalking the teenager and the men racing to save him. we spoke with one of the doctors who's been treating keane. he says keane has a special message for everybody. take a listen. >> keane wants you to know he has all his limbs, and he's going to be going home fully intact. >> reporter: one of the first things he wants to do, cook his family a lobster dinner because, remember, he was lobster diving at the time of the attack. in san diego, will carr, abc news. a pizza deliveryman in wisconsin is being called a hero. police say he may have saved a woman's life. joseph grundl thought he was making a normal delivery. but when he got to a house in the town of waldo, a man answered the door but the woman standing behind that man quietly indicated that she was in danger. >> at one point pointing to her black eye that i could see on

her right eye, mouthed the words help me. an officer the next day told me an officer said i don't think she would have made it through the night. >> grundl called the police after leaving the house and 55-year-old dean hoffman faces kidnapping. he's the woman's ex-boyfriend. a medical helicopter's rough landing caught on camera in new mexico. the pilot trying to land at a ski resort. the chopper hitting the side of that hill bouncing up and then as you can see there starting to slide down that hill. the pilot was not injured. experts say the helicopter may have descended a little too quickly. well, the "eternal father, strong to save" in the meantime, investigating the use of a police helicopter to break up a tailgating party at penn state. the low flying helicopter rattled fans, sent tents, coolers and others debris flying in the air. police say they were forced to use extreme measures because the crowd was unruly and was assaulting police horses and even injured one trooper. some experts say this was a dangerous idea.

south-southwest, north-northeast trajectory. when you head out it will be wet except the east bay valley and north bay. let's get over to how the commute is going. >> the heaviest rain to the north of the san francisco area and off to the west as well. if you're traveling along 101 through santa rosa, healdsburg, that's heavier pockets of rain. you want to slow down. not too soggy on the bay bridge. folks heading into san francisco. chp was able to clear that so that traffic did clear and things are recovering. >> this is the first time most of us have even seen rain since may. >> while this isn't the strongest storm, it is the first of the season, which means the potential for slower than normal

commute. amy hollyfield live in novato for us. >> reporter: good morning. we're in novato where we're getting a little rain right now but it has been raining here even before we got here. if you take a look at the pavement, it showses you what to expect out here. this video shot overnight. this was on northbound highway 101 north of petaluma boulevard. there was an accident, about 1:30 this morning, a rollover. it was raining pretty moderately at the time. no one was hurt. but a lot of rain coming down. this is what want officials want to warn you about, people will be sliding around, the roads are slick and you need to go ahead and give yourself extra time. >> one of the big things is rain's going to slow people down. you're going to be tempted to get on the mobile device and

text your loved ones and let them know you're going to be late. >> reporter: here's some video we shot of the rain coming down. you can see it was pretty heavy. we were on highway 24 and went through the tunnel and had rain on the other end of the tunnel as well. this was between 3:30 and 4:00 this morning. expect wet roads all over the bay area this morning. the advice is to give yourself extra time and slow down and be prepared for other people to be slowing down. reaction time will be delayed. they're hoping people won't be slipping and sliding and crashing into each other but that's a real possibility this morning. reporting live in novato, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. the fire chief says the fire season is far from over far fror >> the rain goes away and it will dry out and we'll be in the same situation we were a few days earlier. >> the chief
