afternoon. >> sky real on the san bruno border. sources tell abc 7 news the man was running in traffic along a busy road. >> deputies used pepper spray and a taser to subdue him this afternoon. the man died after being rushed to a hospital. investigators have spent the last few hours interviewing witnesses and looking for evidence at the scene. >> and we have more breaking news now. this is unfolding in south carolina. >> at least one police officer has died and four others shot. >> investigators say they were taken -- they've taken a suspect into custody in florence county, south carolina. they're describing what happened as an active shooter incident. >> three of the wounded are sheriff's deputies, the other two city police officers. south carolina's governor described the situation as simply devastating in a tweet. now to our other top story here in the bay area now. grief counselors on hand at livermore high school. >> helping classmates cope with the loss of two teens killed

after a suspected overdose. >> scott adams says one of the victims is his stepson. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas in livermore with the story. eric? >> reporter: dan, police are not releasing the names of the two victims. but last night we learned one is thought to be, as you said, the stepson of dilbert creator scott adams. the other according to a couple of sources was a female studen here. we know at this point the investigation continues and the drug police suspect was involved is very, very dangerous. at this school and others in the livermore district, grief counselors have been available this week following word two teens, one of them a student, had died. >> we have students at some of our schools that are sad, upset and in distress. regardless of the reason when we have kids at school who need help, we give them help.

>> reporter: livermore police are waiting for toxicology results but authorities suspect they overdosed on drugs laced with a synthetic painkiller fentan fentanyl. >> we see it being mixed into a bunch of different types of elicit drugs, not just heroin but with cocaine and methamphetamine. >> reporter: scott adams believes one of the two victims was his stepson justin miles. >> police have not released them, a teenaged girl, but a fellow student is grieving her loss. >> one of her best friends told me. >> they cried for half an hour. >> reporter: fentanyl is so dangerous that a narcotics investigator was overcome during a bust this past summer. narcan had to be administered. >> if you're able to administer

in a timely manner we can reverse the effects of the overdose. >> reporter: police are trying to get the word out and a letter was sent home, e-mailed to parents acknowledging the incident happened and trying to maintain to parents that they need to talk to kids and educate them about the dangers of drugs especially during the opioid crisis. live if livermore, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> eric, thank you. opioid abuse is a problem. more than 1,800 people died from opioid overdose in 2017. 4,200 people taken to an emergency room and nearly 21.8 million people have a prescription meaning more than half of all californians are taking some sort of opioid. we want to tell you about the warning signs. they vary but can include increased anxiety, anxiety attacks, euphoria, psychosis, depression and irritability.

with a mobile had a choice even if they weren't aware of the president's wireless alert test. >> never heard of it. >> reporter: fcc law does not allow us to play the concert of tones from phones in tune at 11:18 a.m. this morning but even here the wide net hit most of its targets from out of town tourists -- >> you know, i kind of have a lot of faith in our federal government. >> reporter: to locals. >> they have you had have posted his tax return on there and everybody would have paid attention to it. >> reporter: today's test will be of interest to sonoma county which received criticism in its response to the firestorms. the county tested its own new wireless alert testing system which reported more bugs than notifications in places like guerneville, a disappointment to supervisor linda hopkins. >> unfortunately, it felt like maybe 10% of the residents of guerneville actually received a wireless emergency alert that was supposed to go to everybody. >> reporter: not even the fire station received notifications in september, blaming steep

eliminate some firefighters. we went from the peninsula in palo alto to santa rosa where we're talking about the elimination of firefighters jobs because of a budget deficit. the city council needs to cut $7 million and that means 50 jobs are on the line including six for firefighters. the budget took a hit when they had to fight the tubbs fire. calling for a new investigation. why the cause of the cracked window in the millennium tower is under dispute. an ax head that can fly off mid chop. what sounds like a cartoon moment is pretty serious. and connecting north to south. the state's epic newest trail. hundreds of myliles long and getting under way. >> the wet weather. drew will have more in a

a san francisco supervisor wants an independent review of the cracked millennium tower window because a report says the crack was unrelated to the movement of the building. >> abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow is live with the very latest. melanie? >> reporter: the homeowners association today issues a second report from a second structural engineering firm that says there was some external source that caused the crack in the millennium tower window, not

the fact that the building is leaning or sinking. still supervisor is calling for an independent review. these new photos of the cracked window are part of a report from the architectural firm. abb conducted an investigation and found the crack was from a source break due to exterior impact. unrelated to building movement and settlement. >> what are they talking about? >> he questions the conclusions and credibility of the report. >> it's one of these there's nothing to see here, everybody move along reports. >> reporter: the report references an interview with the homeowner after labor day weekend when the window cracked. the homeowner described being awoken by a massive bang at 2:30 in the morning. quote, the sound was so massive in scale, it sounded like a huge, thick vault door had just slammed shut. the homeowner described a sound like glass cracking for a half

hour. >> is that a bird strike? did somebody shoot it with a gun from 36 stories below? did it get hit by a drone? they have no evidence whatsoever. >> reporter: this afternoon the homeowners association submitted a second engineering letter to the department of building inspection stating there was no indication building settling was the cause of the window cracks. the department of building inspection told abc 7 news its engineers are reviewing the information and that dbi has no comment at this time. >> what i want is where commission their own independent study. >> reporter: abb is recommending the pedestrian protection can be removed and that a further structural investigation of the curtain wall assembly is not warranted. and in the meantime that pedestrian protection that i see over my shoulder remains. that's something the department of building inspection had wanted here. it's not clear when dbi will respond to the findings of these

reports. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> michael finney is here with more on that, really dangerous. >> this is an odd one. very odd. walmart is recalling almost a quarter million camping axes. they can detach and fall off the handle. the ozark trail camp axes. they have a black nonslip rubber grip and claw feature. they have model number 60111140 printed on the package. they were sold from january 2017 through july of this year. at least two people were cut when their ax heads detached. if you have one, take it back to the store for a refund. a new study finds that workers are paying a greater share of their health costs. they say more companies are making workers pay an annual

deductible or, rather, just put it in clear words, increasing the amount that the employee must spend before the insurance kicks in. kaiser says the average cost of a family health care plan in 2018 for the company and worker together about $20,000. advocacy groups say facebook messenger violating laws by collecting children's information without getting consent from parents. advocates are asking the federal trade commission to investigate the kid centric messaging app to see whether it's violating the children's online privacy protection act. children's groups want facebook to ensure the person who sets up the child's account is actually the child's parent. facebook says it hasn't yet reviewed the complaint. it says messenger kids does not run ads or collect data from marketing purposes. do not. >> all right. something to think about for parents. let's talk about rain.

>> and, dan, we're not only talking about rain but downpours with the showers moving through. the majority of the region we're dealing with cloud cover but there is some action in the inland east bay right down street level we go. got a lot of folks on twitter living in livermore just had this downpour move through your neighborhood crossing 580. those pops of yellow as live doppler 7 updates live on the air. that is heavy rain working through the inland east bay. a wider approach and just 18 miles away from livermore there are lightning strikes so the storm is packing a punch in spots and it's not out of the question we could see an isolated lightning strike as the system moves through. so we'll time out the line of showers and downpours as it moves north through the inland east bay. here are the times as it approaches brentwood likely around 5:42 this evening. expect the downpour moving through your neighborhood and shortly after 6:00 right around 6:12 antioch. expect another downpour to work

through. that's not the only other spot. we're heading into the east bay, you can see 680, when you see the deep reds on live doppler 7, that is very heavy rain. estimating that rain falling at more than an inch per hour so as these downpours develop it can drop visibilty very quickly so add some extra time as you're out and about this evening on our freeways. the rain can create slick spots on our roadway this is hour. also tracking this light shower that has developed slowly moving to the north. so union city likely a sprinkle in your neighborhood by about 5:30, 7:00 p.m. earlier in fremont. you could see a light shower. the wider picture on live doppler 7, the showers are really confined to the east bay and inland east bay and i think that's where the greatest threat will lie over the next couple of hours. a lot of lightning strikes. live dom lettppler 7, nearly 40 lightning strikes across the state. outside we go. a live look.

walnut creek. this is an angry sky in the inland east bay this hour. today and through tomorrow morning as well. so the storm impact scale a level one. a light system. once again, where you see the showers pop up heavy rain at times and a chance of lightning as well. it's mild out there. it's muggy. we have a lot of humidity in the atmosphere. and that is what is allowing the heavy downpours to develop. hour by hour we go. by 7:30 still that chance. as the sun goes down that threat lessens but as we go into tomorrow morning, not out of the question for the commute in the morning could have an isolated shower pop up. that will eliminate any shower chance and that will drop our humidity as well. tomorrow night drier, more refreshing air will move in. the call from accuweather, a lot of cloud cover, an isolated sprinkle. 60s. it's a mild night tomorrow, a chance of a shower early drying out into the afternoon. the accuweather seven-day forecast, tomorrow a chance in

a sheriff's sergeant is facing felony charges for illegally recording four juvenile suspects as they spoke with their public defender. prosecutors say that sergeant james russell recorded the juveniles in an interview room at the eden township sheriff's substation.
