during that contentious senate hearing last week, even though some of his remarks at the hearing were prepared in advance. abc's emily rau has the latest from washington. good morning, emily. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and maggie. we are now hours away from the next step in the process of judge kavanaugh's confirmation and as you mentioned, kendis, the supreme court nominee now saying he might have been too emotional during that testimony. after a week of silence, following that explosive testimony -- >> this is a circus. >> reporter: -- judge brett kavanaugh now defending himself in "the wall street journal" writing, my time in high school and college, more than 30 years ago, has been ridiculously distorted in addressing what some have called his disqualifying temperament last thursday. i know that my tone was sharp and i said a few things i should not have said. kavanaugh's op-ed coming at the end of a tense day in washington. arrested as senators took turns combing through the fbi report on the sex assault allegations

vote today and throughout the weekend. lots to see. we turn now to the city of chicago waiting for a possible verdict in the trial of a police officer charged with fatally shooting a black teenager, shooting him 16 times. schools and businesses are preparing for protests as the jury deliberates. this morning, chicago bracing for potentially violent protests as jurors deliberate the fate of officer jason van dyke. van dyke seen here shooting 17-year-old laquan mcdonald as mcdonald was walking away from officers while holding a knife. the suspended police officer is charged with first degree murder, official misconduct and 16 counts of aggravated battery for each shot he fired. prosecutors say van dyke showed no regard for mcdonald's life and claimed the officer exaggerated the threat mcdonald posed. >> he shot too early, he shot too often, and he shot for way too long. >> reporter: the defense calling the case a tragedy but not murder saying the shots were fired because mcdonald would not follow the officer's instructions. >> it is a tragedy that could

have been prevented with one simple step. had laquan mcdonald dropped that knife, he'd be here today. >> reporter: the first day of deliberations ending with van dyke getting emotional. the judge however scolding him for returning to court late. lawyers for van dyke say he was dealing with a threat made against his daughter. the judge gave van dyke until today to show proof of that threat or his bond could be revoked. the release of the shooting video in 2015 sparking months' long protests. [ chanting "16 shots" ] >> reporter: and with the verdict now possible today, businesses are preparing to shu. and to prepare for a protest, some schools will dismiss students early when the verdict is handed down and other schools have planned to hold recess inside if there's a not guilty

verdict. seven russian intelligence officers are now under indictment in the united states accused of taking part in global cyberattacks. the fbi says the targets included a nuclear energy company and the world anti-doping agency. the alleged crimes also extended to the olympics. the suspects allegedly hacked the drug test results of american athletes including venus and serena williams and simone biles. moscow denies the charges. overseas now and the tsunami zone in central indonesia. search crews thought they detected a sign of life inside this destroyed hotel in the city of palu, but after hours of combing through the concrete, they were unable to find any survivors. nearly 1,600 people are now confirmed dead. despite the devastation, there are stories of hope like this one, a 1-year-old girl was swept into the water and disappeared for 24 hours but was found alive under the rubble. to first lady melania trump who toured an orphanage for elephants this morning as she continues her visit to africa.

all right, well, now turning to the most famous athlete in the world who is under new pressure as he denies rape allegations. two of cristiano ronaldo's main sponsors including nike say they're concerned about the allegationagainst the soccer star. portugal's national team has now side. lined ronaldo leaving him off the roster for two matches this month. the search for a missing teacher in maine is entering a fifth day. kristin westra's husband reported her missing monday. her phone, keys, walant t lehir. he says that she had been stressed about work and had not been sleeping well. searchers are focusing their efforts right now around the woods near her home. police say a reported sighting thursday did not pan out and so far they found no evidence of foul play. well, now a new warning about the meat in your fridge. the arizona-based company jbs tolleson is recalling 6.5 million pounds of ground beef and other products because of a salmonella outbreak.

witnesses say the woman in white identified as 64-year-old linda dwire demanded two spanish speaking customers speak english while shopping. that's when kamira trent confronted dwire demanding she leave the store. >> you come from a different generation. >> no, i do not. i have respect, and it does not matter. you don't harass people like this. >> reporter: police later arrested dwire charging her with harassment. well, dwire is defending saying she's not a racist. she says she doesn't mind immigrants coming to the u.s. but says they should love the country enough to speak english. well, many of florida's pupo shut down because of red tide. red tide can cause breathing problems and is blamed for waves of dead fish. well, the tourism industry could take a financial hit worth millions of dollars as the toxic algae forces miami-dade county beaches to close. the governor announcing $3 million in aid, and the red tide is showing up along the atlantic coast this week thanks to strong winds from the gulf.

>> i've been working ocean rescue for 20 years, and this is our first closure in miami-dade county that i can recall for red tide. it's pretty crazy. a lot of people have come from the west coast to escape some of the red tides to enj the beaches and i have to tell them we're osed and they're completely shocked. >> yeah, that's because it's unusual to see it here on the atlantic coast. it had been a huge problem on the gulf coast. experts fear the problem could get worse in the coming months. park rangers in minnesota are finding out that, well, berries and birds, they don't mix. some berries which have fermented earlier than usual because of an early frost are making birds drunk. they're flying while intoxicated and crashing into cars and windows and just causing havoc. >> and these birds just gorge and gorge and gorge on these berries, and they don't digest as quickly and then sooner's intoxicated. it would be like chugging a keg of beer. >> all comes back to beer. >> everybody loves beer. well, the ranger says one
