live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." and we cannot take this as a motion to stay quiet. >> termation in the bay area, home of christine blasey ford, despite the fact that the supreme court nomination of brett kavanaugh is pretty much a done-deal. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. a final senate vote to place kavanaugh on the supreme court will take place tomorrow. the outcome is a foregone conclusion after swing vote senators announced their decisions today. >> i will vote to confirm judge kavanaugh. >> that's republican senator susan collins of maine. minutes later, west virginia senator joe manchin tweeted his intention to vote yes. he's the only democrat to cross party lines, making the expected split tomorrow to be 51-49 in favor. this really came down to the decisions of four senators, jeff flake and susan collins say they

will vote yes along with manchin. >> one republican crossed party lines, lisa murkowski says she is opposing judge kavanaugh. >> and there was quick reaction today's announcement. white house press secretary sarah sanders tweeted, thank you, senator collins, for standing by your convictions and doing the right thing to confirm judge kavanaugh. silicon representative ro khanna tweeted, regard lps of this wrong decision for our nation's future, we will continue to fight. california senator kamala harris tweeted, it doesn't matter your race, age, gender, income, sexual assault affects everyone. this is a conversation we need to keep having and take seriously. >> tonight we are getting a sense of how kavanaugh's first accuser is feeling about today's development. palo alto professor christine blasey ford accused kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her decades ago when both were in high school. >> they both testified before the senate judiciary committee last

today christine blasey ford's sister-in-law says she remains helpful and does not think all is lost even if kavanaugh's nomination is approved. >> there's a conversation going on around the issues and i think there's solace for her that there's a deeper conversation happening. i think there's time for the senators to think about how to bring the country together instead of deepening the divide. you know, i would hope that maybe could happen. >> members of christine blasey ford's legal team spoke with "abc 7 news" about the fbi investigation which delayed the senate's vote by one week, as you know, and what they're concerned about for the future. >> the fbi never interviewed dr. ford and they never interviewed a number of people who submitted sworn statements that corroborated her allegations. this was not an investigation. this was a sham. >> if there is a justice kavanaugh, i think that says a lot about how this country views women, views survivors, and that

"abc 7 news" reporter chris wynn found mixed reactions. >> reporter: supporters of judge brett kavanaugh called it a political circus but opponents say he never should have come close to confirmation in the first place. >> make sure you are as educated and aware as possible and put in your vote. >> reporter: saratoga resident is a survivor of sexual assault. she says she won't allow the kavanaugh confirmation to be a setback for women's rights and believes more people will come out to the polls in november, inspired by the bravery of dr. christine blasey ford of palo alto, the woman who accused kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in high school. >> they really didn't look at the way kavanaugh presented himself and the way he responded. i just think that there's so many question marks, that that should be enough unto itself. >> reporter: republican leaders firmly stand behind kavanaugh

and say it is time for the country to move forward. jason clark is chairman of the san francisco gop. >> i think this has really galvanized the republicans. i think a lot of republicans were disturbed by what they saw as a lack of due process. i think they were disturbed by politicians grandstanding at the expense of a woman who has possibly been sexually assaulted. >> reporter: for some moving on is easier said than done. therapist heather valentine has worked direct lit with teens and women who have been sexually assaulted. >> there's a part of me that is worried it will silence people because it does give a message of you're not going to be believed. but i want to say something. i hope it empowers people to speak up more because that's what it is doing for me. >> reporter: community members saying more lessons can be learned. >> we cannot take this as a motion to stay quiet. we absolutely need to come out even more. >> reporter: turning their disappointment into a call for action. chris wynn, "abc 7 news." if you would like to take action, go to

abc7news.com/takeaction. we created a list of local resources ranging from how to get help on issues like sexual assault and sexual harassment to how to contact your local representatives. we have witnessed an unprecedented ee deal to select a supreme court justice, so much controversy. abc 7 morning's anchor reggie key talked with political director rick klein about the long-term impact it may have. >> reporter: this will end up being the closest and most partisan vote we have ever seen for a supreme court justice. what are the ramifications of that? >> i think america has gone through a searing process that has bad implications for people looking for a moment of coming together. this has been a very bruising, difficult and ultimately very partisan process throughout. the end result is going to be a supreme court that is closely divided, that is now -- has as the swing vote someone who himself is enormously controversial, who goes in under a cloud, under questionable circumstances, with people saying there hasn't been enough

done to try to make sure he is not partisan and that he doesn't have allegations that are credible against him. so this is going to go down as a pretty black mark of a moment in my view of the processes of america democracy where the anger erupted and people showed their partisan stripes like few times before. >> abc news political director rick klein. congresswoman jackie spear meantime echoed those sentiments today. >> it is a very, very bad day for the supreme court in this country because we are now making it crystal clear that the supreme court is a political institution, more so than it has ever been. >> a bay area attorney who was friends with brett kavanaugh at yale law school came to "abc 7 news" today to share his feelings on kavanaugh now being one step away from being confirmed. >> that's right. "abc 7 news" anchor kristen sze is here with the insights from her conversation with vernon

gr grigg. >> he first talked with us after kavanaugh was nominated. he told us kavanaugh was a good guy. they both graduated from yale law in a class of 150 people. the former prosecutor now in private practice in redwood city said it was hard watching kavanaugh act the way he did in the hearing last week. >> i hadn't seen that brett kavanaugh before. i hadn't seen him that angry. i hadn't seen him that kind of fired up. so a lot of -- even a lot of the law school community started buzzing, like, what was that and that's not going to work. and that was my problem. >> and does that concern you for someone who will sit on the supreme court? >> well, certainly if it were to continue, of course, yes, it would. he's going to have to have a dignity and grace and a willingness to listen that i think is -- that he has never possessed before. >> and put aside the angry -- >> absolutely. that has to go away. >> despite his concerns, grigg is hopeful that

wood and the bluegrass festival and you don't have to pay to enjoy either of these events. >> that's the amazing part. we have team coverage on both the festivities and the practicalities of enjoying them. >> that's right. let's begin with "abc 7 news" reporter carlos saucedo along the embarcadero. hi. >> reporter: as you know, getting to the city can be a chang on any given day, but especially a busy weekend like this. city officials say they're expecting more than one million people because of fleet week as well as other events. just take a look. this is how it looks right now here along the embarcadero. a lot of people walking through, but as you know more people means more traffic and added security. public transit is your best option if you are coming to the city this weekend. that's the message emergency officials are trying to get across. >> traffic in san francisco can be pretty bad, so take public transportation. >> reporter: with more visitors in town for fleet week and other city events, security is being

increased. san francisco's emergency operations center has been fully activated. navy admirals even got a tour of the center this afternoon. >> we do have additional representatives here from some departments, and that just allows us to work across the table with those representatives to have quicker communication. >> reporter: this means sheriff, police, fire and homeland security officials working in the same room to respond to any emergency, to help ease traffic ferry services have been expanded to include an additional 14 rides saturday and sunday. last year 24,000 passengers rode the ferry the weekend of fleet week. that's more than double the average on any given weekday. if you are coming from the peninsula on cal train, expect delays. starting this saturda t ag iuspending weekend services into san francisco from the bay shore station to update the tracks. >> we are providing a bus bridge, so we want to make sure people who normally make this commute can still get connected. it should take about an extra

i have to tell you full disclosure, like carlos mention, the traffic troubles were already starting to be felt because it took twice as long as usual to get from golden gate park here to ma preen au green. but no worry because as soon as we got here and got to see the blue angels, it was all worth it. now, today the blue angels made their weekend debut for thousands of eager fans who came far and wide to witness that action. we ran into families who have made camping out at marina green a yearly tradition, and that includes geena and her son who has autism. for them fleet week holds special meaning. >> he goes to all of the air shows in california, and he usually is part of the flight deck. this is what he's good at and he absolutely is a typical child when he's at air shows. it is absolutely wonderful to see him when he's engaged. >> i like the part when they fly and do their tricks and do all sorts of stuff. >> reporter: he even mentioned his favorite is the airplane that was used in ""top gun"."

now, over at golden gate park the hardly strictly blew grass festival kicks off their 18th year. the music acts have gone from nine bands to 81. 500,000 people are expected to attend. something to note, the organizer of fleet week, they tell me that the special vip fleet deck club seats are sold out for tomorrow. those are the ones under the tent right in front of the water, but no worry. there are still some tickets available for sunday. if you don't want to pay at all, don't worry, the grass that is always free is available on a first come, first serve basis. live in san francisco tonight, i'm dion lim, "abc 7 news." >> excellent, dion. and the hardly strictly bluegrass festival has grown leaps and bounds thanks in participate to its creator warren helman who passed away in 2007. >> but the festival endures. he was a banjo player who once joked he founded the festival in 2001 so he could join in with

the world's best musicians. >> they remember helman's passion and goal to give something special to the city. >> the idea was simple, which was to put together a festival focused on the music and focused on the park. i mean it was really just a gift to the city -- a very self-indulgent gift to the city of san francisco. >> and i hope it continues for many years to come. i know the helman family, this event means a ton to them. they want to see it keep going. >> the helman family has endowed the festival to cover costs. it is still one of the few free concerts of its size and kind anywhere in the country. it is really a remarkable event on so many levels, especially that it is free for everyone. >> i know. and there's so much going on. are you going need a sweater, jacket, windbreaker? what is happening? >> this could make or break the weekend. >> depends what time of the day you go out. maybe at nighttime you need a windbreaker, but daytime sunny and mild this weekend. check out the weather for fleet week winding down this week in

san francisco. both days the blue angels will be flying under blue skies and it will be warm and breezy here in san francisco. looking at live doppler 7 right now, you see how clear the skies are. they will remain clear through the weekend. this is the view from mount tam looking down on to the bay right now. 62 in san francisco. oakland, 66. low 70s at mountain view, san s jose. 59 degrees at pacifica. looking westward from emeryville, readings in santa rosa at 73. 72 in livermore. and the view from the east bay his camera looking toward mount diablo under mainly blue skies, these are our forecast features. sunny and warmer conditions this weekend. increased fire danger though with gusty conditions in the hills and in the east bay valleys. it will be a little cooler by the middle of next week. overnight under mainly clear skies we'll see low temperatures generally in the mid to upper 50s. a little cooler in the north bay valley where lows will drop into

the upper 40s and low 50s. tomorrow's highs, mid 60s at the coast and up to or just above 80 degrees in the warmest inland locations. looking ahead to sunday, it will be even warmer with inland areas seeing highs in the mid 80s. we will see highs up to about 80 degrees, maybe even some low 80s around the bay shoreline and upper 60s on the coast. a similar range on monday, which is columbus day. it will remain warm with highs in the mid 80s inland and up to about 80 degrees on the coast. now, along with the increase in temperature and the dry conditions and the strong, gusty wind, fire danger increases as well. so we have fire/weather watch in effect for the hills and the mountains and the east bay valleys of the bay area from tomorrow evening through monday morning. it will be quite gusty, especially in the higher elevations, and as a result a wind advisory is also in effect, basically the same time frame, 8:00 tomorrow evening to about 9:00 monday morning. in some of the higher elevations wind gusts could reach or exceed 50 miles per hour and that of course brings about the

possibility of downed trees and power lines. here is the accuweather seven day forecast. so warming continues on sunday and monday, peaking those two days. we see a dropout, minor cooling on tuesday with much cooler and more fall-like weather on wednesday and thursday. dan and ama. >> okay. thank you, spencer, very much. well, "7 on your side" featured a viewer who drove more than 100 miles to get an appointment with the dmv. that was yesterday. >> can you imagine? today we have a warning issued by the dmv about looking for motor vehicle information online you should know about. "7 on your side" michael finney is here with that warning tonight. >> one of the ways to speed up and not stand in the line for so long is to be prepared. people know that, so they often start the process online. the dmv is working to speed things up, but it can still take a while to get something done. >> i wait inside one hour, and i wait. >> reporter: what's the number there? what did they give you?

>> my number is 163 and inside is 122. so -- >> reporter: oh, no. >> yes. >> in an effort to dodge these kind of waits consumers are looking for dmv information online. the california dmv says be careful. >> we want the public to know that the dmv does not charge you a processing fee to complete online transactions, and if you find yourself being charged a processing fee then you're not on the official dmv website. >> reporter: the california dmv is hesitant to mention the website addresses causing concern. >> they're not talking about us. >> jeff lerner is with sunday-based dmv.org, a long-time publisher of dmv information for all 50 states. >> part of the reason why they're not giving specific web addresses is they change frequently. there are, unfortunately, companies and websites out there that look to take advantage of citizens and drivers across the

u.s. >> reporter: you are now warned that third party sites cannot issue a driver's license. there are websites, however, that can register your car and are approved by the california dmv. here at the san francisco dmv, we talked to people who had seen several of those kind of sites. >> yeah, it was a little tricky at first, but i could tell the difference because of the dot-gov rather than dot-com or dot-org. >> that's how you know the difference. look at your license plate. if it is one of the standard white ones it has the official website printed right on it. dmv.org is extremely well-written and organized. it has great information and it is often very easy to understand. dmv.ca.gov is the state's official website. keep it in mind. >> good tip. >> thanks, michael. getting out of jail. a major development in a hillsborough murder case that made national news.

t live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." one of the people implicated in a high-profile hillsborough murder case is out of jail following an agreement to testify against the other two suspects. tiffany lee and cavi bayat are accused of killing keith green in 2016. >> olivia adela is going to testify against him. "abc 7 news" reporter has the details of his release. >> reporter: he walked away a free man. his murder charges with dropped after he agreed to testify against tiffany lee and her boyfriend at the time. both lee and vayat are being charged with the shooting death of keith green, the father of lee's two children. adela pleaded no contest to

accessory after the fact. >> in this case, not the killing of the victim but instead of taking the body afterward, taking it up to sonoma county and attempting to dump it there. >> reporter: green's body was found off the side of the road in sonoma county in may 2016. under california law, adela has served his time, a year and a half of a maximum three-year sentence. tiffany lee's attorney was not pleased with the decisin to release him. >> i think he may have been the actual murderer, but i don't have to prove that one way or the other. all i got to do is show he is lying about his participation. he was at least one of the individuals who participated in the murder of mr. green and it was not in cahoots with my client, ms. lee but for a totally different purpose. >> reporter: he is expect to testify sometime in august 2019. the delay is due to a request by lee's attorneys who is said to be undergoing breast cancer treatment. the case has gained national attention because lee was released after posting a $64

million bail, the highest in san mateo county and the eighth highest in the country. she has to wear an ankle monitor and is only allowed to leave the home to receive medical treatment. "abc 7 news" has found out that the second defendant will have a hearing in about two weeks to request that his bail amount be reduced. the da says his office will object to that request. in redwood city, lyanne melendez, "abc 7 news." >> thank you, lyanne. in the east bay the contra costa county sheriff's office is looking for the men behind a terrifying armed home invasion robbery in alamo overnight. according to deputies, several suspects wearing ski masks and dark clothing approached the victim in the driveway of his home. one of the suspects hit the homeowner with a wooden chair. they left the home with personal property. neighbors were very troubled by the incident. >> we lock the doors and set the alarm now for sure. that's definitely a thing because we're pretty -- we have the back door open for the dogs

and stuff, and now everything is locked up. >> reporter: the sheriff's office is asking anyone with information about the incident to give them a call. more closures are planned around san francisco's salesforce transit center. the discovery of two cracked seal beams shut down the transit center ten days ago as we reported to you. we are keeping track how long the clock is running. as you can see, starting tonight first street between mission and howard will be closed from 9:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. for the first few nights. that's in addition to the closure of fremont street. the part of the transit center above 1st street has similar steel beams to the ones that have cracked above fremont street and officials want to make sure that they are safe. so some more closures coming. we have a wonderful update for you on a story we brought to you last december on an ambitious charity helping bay area children. >> it is called moms against poverty program and it has helped literally thousands of children locally and around the world. >> they told us that our story

helped them receive enough grants and corporate and private donations to expand their services to five new locations. >> abc 7's cheryl jennings has the story. >> you like the camera? >> reporter: these san francisco families are the newest recipients of the moms against poverty program. it is called map for short and it provides a variety of services including hygiene perhaps. map recently purchased a new washer/dryer combination for those who work with the asian pacific association family support services. this class is called learning through play. >> what we aim to do is for them to pick up early child hold literacy and so numbers, counting, seeing, read and talk. we try to teach parents how to create these activities at home. >> in this area people and the family have many stresses, so stuff going on in the family and in the community, violence and drugs issue. and for the kids, if they also have to worry about clean

clothes and other stuff, it will really affect their school performance. >> reporter: she cofounded moms against poverty in 2008. she says new donations allowed m.a.p. to buy the washer/dryer here and offer help to five new locations. it is thanks to generous donors, including hitachi and another foundation who saw our "abc 7 news" story last december. we showcased the hygiene program at the frick impact academy in oakland. >> we learned that a lot of children because of lack of hygiene, because clothes wasn't washed at home, not access to have the laundry facilities, they would skip schools. >> m.a.p. buys personal hygiene items in bulk for those signed up for the perhaps. >> some of the children, they don't have hygiene products at home, especially teenagers. they need that. and because of lack of it, they get bullied, they don't come to

schools. they feel embarrassed. their self-esteem goes down. >> with them having it here, it is like an emergency pack. they can knock on a door, ask for shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary napkins, anything that people need. >> reporter: she is the liaison for moms against poverty for schools, churches and centers like this. >> there's a need out there. there's a lot of people that's in poverty, people that need help, and that's what we're here for. >> they provided the deep freeze for us. >> reporter: we showed you last year m.a.p. bought a freezer and filled it with high-quality meats for the oakland community. they want to do the same thing for every center enrolled in the program. >> when a school comes to us and asks for nutrition program and we don't have sufficient funding to provide them with what the children need, it breaks our heart. >> reporter: she gets reports from the m.a.p. perhaps throughout the bay area and across the globe, including africa and cambodia.

since the economy is doing so well, investors are worried that

interest rates will rise. today the dow lost 180 points. the nasdaq dropped almost 100, and the s&p went down by 16. evidence of our strong economy was bolstered by news that the country's unemployment rate is at the lowest point in nearly 50 years. it is now 3.7%. that's the lowest since december of 1969. >> the nation's largest mattress store, mattress firm, is filing for bankruptcy and closing 700 stores. mattress firm has 3,000 stores nationwide including more than 60 in the bay area. the company is struggling with declining sales which dropped 13% in the first nine months of this year compared to last year. mattress firm has not named which stores will close. all right. we are done with the rain. here is a live look from our mount tam

this weekend. >> that's right. spencer is back with the forecast. spencer. >> that's true. we're going to have beautiful weather but it will be warm, dry and windy, so a fire weather watch is in effect for the hills and mountains of bay area and east bay valleys from tomorrow evening through monday morning. wind could be gusting up to 55 miles per hour in some of the higher elevations and there's a wind advisory in effect as well for pretty much the same period of time. there's a possibility of downed trees and power lines. let's look at some of the events going on this gorgeous weekend. one is the girls' festival at santa clara university tomorrow. some of our "abc 7 news" people will be participating there. under sunny skies, temperatures will be in the 70s throughout the day. here in the city at golden gate park to be more specific, the heartily strictly bluegrass festival under breeze ae and mild conditions. on monday in san jose there's a rock & roll marathon series. my son jason is running in that to benefit st. jude children's

now abc 7 sports with larry beil. >> good evening. the nba returns to the city of seattle for first time since april of 2008 when the sonics left for oklahoma city. tonight the return of kevin durant as the warriors play the kings in the emerald city in a preseason game. durant spent his rookie season as a sonic. he was only 19 years old. look at the young face, fresh out of the university of texas. then the whole team was shipped off to oklahoma. tonight will mark the final event at key arena which will be replaced with a new $700 million facility in the hope of luring nhl and nba teams to seattle. here is k.d. walking out tonight. it is all about durant this evening, and here he is with the memories coming back. >> just those memories of, you know, just the everyday grind of going to the practice facility,
