bernard taking us back to the devastating north bay wildfire that devastated a community one year ago. >> but first we check with katie with the grass fires burning in solano county. >> reporter: since i last spoke with you at 5:00, the winds have died down significantly, and that's helping firefighters, but we certainly don't have any containment numbers to speak of. that charred hillside is actually from a fire two months ago, so this area is incredibly prone to fires. if we pan to the right, you can see the smoke in the distance, in contrast to what we saw earlier, the wind is higher in the area and it's not pushing it as forcefully south. i'm here on grizzly island road to give you some perspective. let's take a look footage from earlier today.

a woman i spoke to said that the winds were strong here, 40 to 50 miles an hour at the peaks of the hills, according to firefighters. photographers struggled to hold the camera steady. it was so incredibly windy, it pushed the fire fast. some 4,500 acres have burned so far, so that's 500 acres more since i last spoke with you. this area is part ranch land, sparsely populated. firefighters are still working to confirm official damage. >> i just came back from driving grizzly island road down to beld beldon's landing and i can confirm there's one vehicle that was burned in the fire. >> reporter: the fire started a little before 11:00 near travis air force base, no word yet on the cause, it did spread quickly

towards the sacramento river. we have seen several helicopters over the scene. firefighters are hoping the wind will die down more at sunset, which will be a boost for them. take another live look out there, you can see there is a little bit of white smoke, which is indicative of just grassland burning. after this we're going to get a closer look at what has burned. the good is the fire is burning south towards the sacramento river and that area is also marsh land that will also help slow the flames. >> several other fires are burning in the area, cal fire is mopping up a 30-acre brush fire this afternoon in south san jose. this fire started at 3:00 on monterrey street. that smoke from that fire was so

thick, firefighters were forced to close down the road. >> take a look, this is live from our abc7 east bay hills cam, where you can see that haze in front of mt. diablo. we're also getting reports of falling ash near the fire. more on the fire danger, drew? >> this is all indicative of just how strong these winds have been this afternoon. they've been gusting frequently, over 35 miles an hour. so that has been a major factor as to why many of us have seen smoke so far away from this fire in solano county. winds right now still on the active side. we have gusts in the hills, up to 35 miles an hour at mt. diablo. as we get you closer into that fire in solano county, winds out of the north, racing 23 miles an hour so what that does is it

takes that smoke and sends it as far south as san jose. we do have that red flag warning still in effect overnight. and we do anticipate these winds will remain rather busy even as the sun goes down later on this evening. we'll take a look at how high those winds go and we'll take a look at the fire danger. the flames broke out one year ago tomorrow, the tops fire alone destroyed more than 6,700 buildings, flames trapped people overnight with no warning. >> 44 people were killed, 22 of those victims were from sonoma county. >> and that's where cornel bernard is joining us in santa rosa with a prayer service in those victims honor.

cornel? >> reporter: hope was the theme of today's prayer service here at cardinal newman high school. at the fires many say there's still a lot of healing to do. there were prayers for a community still healing the wounds from a deadly fire. >> you are not alone. and you are not forgotten. >> most everyone who attended this prayer service know exactly where they were one year ago. >> i could smell the smoke and i knew we were in trouble. >> pastor greta king lived in coffee park where so many homes burned in the monster firestorm. her home and church survived. >> the shock and the pain and the fear and the trauma are the same for all of us. we all went through that. >> it's very terr pentsost t an unt and uncle lost their home.

>> reporter: suzanne brown's relatire rebuilding but her relatives are unable to rebuild their homes. this prayer service was held at cardinal newman high school where the fire damaged parts of the campus. >> it feels like it just happened yesterday. >> we didn't have an idea of what was coming until it hit us. >> santa rosa fire chief says lessons were learned from the fire. >> this is going to be a good day for the community and everyone and recognize the people we had, the troubles that we had that night andrw reflection. >> reporter: greta king knows santa rosa is healing. >> you never know how strong you until you need it. >> reporter: a lot of people have hope today, homes being rebuilt. there's new construction happening everywhere.

itself. we cast a very broad net. >> a relative says the victims in that van included four sisters who were headed for a 30th birthday party for one of the women. we're told this is a dangerous sbegs intersection that has seen many accidents. you remember the accident on the san mateo bridge mechanical failure caused the vehicle to go up in flames, trapping the women inside. two years ago governor jerry brown signed a law requiring busses to have two popout doors so occupants can get out. between 11:00 and 11:15 tomorrow morning, trains will slow to 20 miles an hour. stations and trains will broadcast a test warning.

has improved slightly, so it looks like that smoke is being lifted up into the atmosphere. the emeryville camera, you look towards the west, that's a beautiful shot, unlimited visibility, great shot of the s.f. skyline. not everybody is seeing the smoke, but where you are seeing it, it can be rather thick overhead. it's a warm evening out there, 70 in san francisco, 77 right now in san jose. 83 in fairfield and you can see livermore checking in at 78 degrees. the big story right now, summer those winds, they'll still active out of the north, gusting to 44, 32 in livemore, that current wind gust we had in san francisco. future tracker wind gusts, 11:00 later on tonight, you can see it's still windy out there, those winds continue to come out of the north, gusting to 20 to 30 miles an hour. and similar story as weed ed ad
