a mysterious light illuminates the bay area sky leaving people wondering what's that hovering over our heads? good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. >> i'm arrack thomas. if you saw that mysterious light in the sky around 7:30, you weren't alone. >> what is that? it's getting brighter. >> look at that beautiful light. it looks like a black hole has arrived. >> yeah, it is a sight to see. our abc 7 newsroom was unidated with phone calls from concerned bay area residents. viewers sent in videos and images hoping for some notification on the unidentified

flying object. >> well, there's your unidentified flying object identified now as a spacex falcon 9 rocket carrying a satellite that blasted off from vandenberg air force base. military officials say placing the satellite in orbit is the rock's primary purpose but spacex will also try for the first time to bring the malkin first stage back to the landing. it has not done so on the west coast. the satellite is the first of two that will be used for emergency managemnt and land monitoring. and you can check out the rocket images and videos captured by our bay area viewers. just go to our website at abc7news.com. a fast moving fire in salono county scorched thousands of acres. it is 70% contained tonight. >> sky 7 captured a few

buildings going up in flames, but we haven't heard if anyone was hurt. we begin our coverage tonight with abc 7 news report katey utis. >> reporter: high winds and 4,000 acres in a few hours. >> it just jumped the road and kept going. and then there was no stopping it. >> the winds at the top of the ridges are 40 to 50 miles an hour, and it's been very difficult to keep up with the fire spread. >> reporter: roxany and tim evacuated their cattle. they had an ominous feeling before the fire started around 11:00. >> tim, my husband said that darn north wind, i hope there's no fires, and it was like the curse. that did it. we saw the column of smoke go

up, and it built and built and built. >> reporter: firefighters confirm one home and a barn burned as well as some cars. people had to be evacuated from the duck clubs. some 30 people are still sheltered in place island. more than two dozen agencies have assisted with this fire. there will be teams no word yet on the cause of the fire. the landscape is blackened. but people and animals are safe to return home. near susoon city, abc 7 news. >> now, the strong winds drifted the heavy smoke to many parts of the bay area including contra costa county. >> in places like concord people

reported fallen ash, some of it even landing in one man's pool. >> reporter: the thick cloud of smoke from the fire burning in salono county could be seen drifting through parts of the east bay. the strong winds made it easy to see and smell the smoke. >> it was pretty potent. >> reporter: eric captured these images of big chunks of ash that fell into his pool in concord. >> it's just crazy to see how much was in there and how thick it was. >> reporter: the winds strong enough to topple over the patio umbrellas as a brush fire continued to scorch, the smoke spread into parts of alameda county. the fire weather red flag was flying at fire station 24 in oakland hills. fire engines on standby. >> we're getting numerous calls on this drift smoke. we encourage people to reports smell of smoke, at the same time the question we're going to ask are do you see a source or see a fire sph. >> reporter: the thick smell still lingered for several

hours. >> i thought we'd bring the kids out, let them get some fresh air, not so fresh but we're outside. >> reporter: this family didn't mind the burnt stench too much, but in hazy conditions it's better to stay safe. >> the recommendation is don't go outdoors. >> reporter: in concord, abc 7 news. >> so the wind was clearly a problem today. >> yeah, the gusts were fanning the flames and at the same time blowing smoke all the way down to the south bay. so we continue our coverage now with abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma with the weather conditions and when we'll see some relief. >> yeah, dion and erwreck, those winds earlier today were gusting well over 30 miles per hour, pushing that smoke as far south as san jose. the winds right now in our hills still very active at this hour. look at mount diablo right now.

so the winds will still continue tonight. so it's for that fact, that red flag warn, this will continue overnight tonight until 9:00 tomorrow morning. those north winds could gust close to 50 miles an hour. that means fires can easily start and easily spread with these northerly winds. we'll talk about when those winds finally relax and when we'll see return of that fog coming up in that full forecast in a few minutes. a trip to a birthday party turned tragic when a limousine crashed and killed 20 people near albany. state troopers believe the limousine ran a stop sign before it plowed into a parking lot of a restaurant. all 18 of the limoes pses died along with two other adults walking in the parking lot. >> at this point in time we look at everything. we look at the vehicle factors, we look at the roadway.

we look at survival factors. we look at the condition of the drivers, the drivers. we look at the operator itself, the company. we look at everything. we cast a very broad net. >> a relative says the victims in the van included four sisters who were headed to a 30th birthday party for one of the women. local residents have told reporters this is dangerous intersection that has seen many accidents. you may remember a limousine crashed on the san mateo bridge back in 2013 killing five women including a bride to be all celebrating her upcoming wedding. an investigation determined a mechanical failure caused the vehicle to go up in flames trapping the women inside. two years later governor jerry brown signed a law to have limousines have two rear doors and a pop out window in case of fire or another emergency. new at 11:00 arb where baby escaped being hurt after a bicyclist crashed into the infant's car and went through the rear windshield.

tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the north bay wildfires that killed dozens of people and wiped out thousands of homes. >> the death toll from the fires could have been much worse if thought for the self-less efforts first responders and volunteers in the hard hit city of santa rosa the police were wearing body cameras. >> video from those cameras gives us a window for what it was like for the heroes who stepped up that night. >> literally structure after structure burning. thousands of structures all on fire within a matter of hours. >> reporter: officer orlando is dispatched to one of the city's retirement communities nestled in the burning hills. he arrives to a multitude of helpless faces peering out from the darkness. >> the powers out everywhere, and i remember i walked into the lobby of this facility, and there's just a sea of elderly folks. i kind of at that point said,

all right, what are we supposed to do now? >> reporter: the clock is ticking. the fire has surrounded the facility. >> for anybody to say they weren't scared, lying through your teeth. >> reporter: but with only smaller police and fire vehicles on the scene there's no way he and first responders can get all these people safely evacuated. then a call comes an unlikely cavalry is on the way. santa rosa's bus drivers navigating up the hill. volunteering their services they risk their own lives to evacuate the masses of the stranded and vulnerable. >> the true heroes of that incident were those bus drivers. those guys didn't, and yet that was awesome, and that was just humanity at its best. i just started grabbing people and trying to help them onto the bus as far as possible but as calm as possible, too. hi, ma'am. i'm your escort service.

from the trauma of living as a captive for two decades. >> winston churchill said there's something good about the outside of a horse is good for a woman or man. >> reporter: after a call from bailee's daughter. >> very frightened to get a call from your daughter saying, mom, i just drove down the block and there's 20 foot flames on either side. jacee went and got friends of ours to get the horses. and all the other horses left, but these two decided to put us through 24 hours, 36 hours of terror, terror really. >> reporter: the horses were saved. but most everything else was a total loss. the home bailee and her husband shared and the ranch the couple used as act space for bailee's patients, people trying to recover from a traumatic event. >> it was an oasis, and so losing this spot, losing the notion it was even called a

protected space has been horrendous. >> it's taken about a year to hit me. >> reporter: bailee's husband, charles homes, tells us he's still processing all that was lost here. >> it strips things down so all that's left is love and what we care about really. >> reporter: the buildings, the structures that once made up the protected space are gone for now. and though she plans to rebuild, dr. bailee told us after the fire she realized it's not about the place at all. >> and what we've found is the protected space is more about the people that are around to protect the folks that are here than maybe this spot. >> reporter: today they're just visiting but someday soon the horses will return here to live. and bailee and her husband will rebuild their house and the ranch where so many peopleinlyef

miles an hour, and that will continue tonight. a lot of folks who saw smoke earlier today, it's a night tonight, really want to know if they can open up their windows. we're still having issues in the inland east bay and santa clara valley where air quality is on the moderate side right now. what that means if you have respiratory issues like asthma, you can still have some problems because there's lingering smoke in our atmosphere at this hour. look at temperatures right now. it's pretty impressive san francisco at this late hour is still holding of 70 degrees, just indicative of this warm air mass we have over head. oakland at 66. we're at 67 in san jose, 65 in santa rosa. and in fairfield right now it's still warm with the north wind keeping temperatures right around 76 degrees. talk about those winds. tomorrow morning future tracker wind gusts will stop this clock at 5:00 in the morning. and we do expect those winds to be active out of the north gusting at times.

however, as we go throughout the daytime we do expect those winds to really back off. so by monday afternoon you can see across the region 5:00, those winds generally should be less about 15 miles an hour. but those winds are still active tonight, so that red flag warning still in effect essentially for our north bay hills, the east bay hills, the santa cruz mountains where those winds right now are gusting close to 50 miles an hour at times. under a red flag warning, our fire danger is high, that means fires can easily start and easily spread. it will be a windy knight our our hills and also a wild night. it's a big day tomorrow in half moon bay. wave got that famous pumpkin weigh off tomorrow. a nice day along the coast, a lot of sunshine and it will be mi. by 11:00 temperatures already at 60 degrees along our coastline. so tomorrow it will be a warm day with diminishing winds. your 12-hour day planner on your monday, it will be a windy morning first thing. you're going to notice that as you step out the door in the

4,500 acres moving quickly from wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. fire officials say two buildings and a home have been destroyed. so far no reports of any injuries. much of the region is under a red flag warning through tomorrow morning because of the dry, windy conditions. those wind gusts are forcing heavy smoke to drift into many parts of the bay area including contra costa county. concord residents reported falling ash, some of which landed in this man's pool. fire officials say in hazy conditions like these stay inside with your doors and windows closed. it was one year ago tomorrow that the north bay wildfires erupted, flames leveling entire neighborhoods, trapping people with no warning. 44 people were killed. >> now, 22 of those victims were from salono county. cornell bernard went to a service today in santa rosa where those lives were

remembered. ♪ >> reporter: there were prayers for a community still healing the wounds from a deadly fire. >> you are not alone, and you are not forgotten. >> reporter: most everyone who attended this prayer service knew exactly where they were a year ago. >> i could smell the smoke and i knew we were in trouble. >> reporter: her home and church survived. >> the shock and the pain and the fear and the trauma are the same for all of us. we all went through that. >> it was very terrifying. my parents lost their home, and my aunt and uncle lost their home. >> reporter: suzan brown's relatives are rebuilding but not everyone has the means to do so. >> a lot of people were underinsured and so they were unable to rebuild their homes. but for the most part santa rosa is strong. >> reporter: this prayer service

held at the high school where the fire burned parts of the campus. santa rosa fire chief tony gauzener says lessons were learned from the fire. many home owners say there was no warning to evacuate. >> this is gng to be a good day for everyone, to recognize the people we lost and the troubles he had that night and to move forward some some positive reflection. >> reporter: greta king knows santa rosa is healing. >> you never know what you have inside you until you're tested. and we have found out that we love each other. >> reporter: here's a sight that's giving a lot of people hope these days, homes being rebuilt. there's a lot of new construction happening everywhere. the fire department now has ability to send electronic alerts to the entire community in the event of an emergency. in santa rosa, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> meantime people reflected and

remembered the lives lost in last year's wildfires during a twilight ceremony in downtown sonoma. a bell rang 44 times once for each life lost in last year's wildfires. it also included a lighting of the love sculpture to honor the victims and survivors. the flames spread quickly destroying homes and businesses. >> this is what white rock vineyard looked like before the fire and here's drone view 7 showing us after. several homes around the property were also leveled. the winery dates back to the 1970s making it the oldest in california. three generations made it out of the winery safely. when the family returned to the ruins they found their wild stock and dogs survived but lost up to 20% of their inventory.
