good monday morning. i'm kendis gibson. good monday morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm lynda lopez in for diane macedo. here are some of the headlines we're following on "world news now." brett kavanaugh is preparing for his first day on the supreme court and he's keeping his pledge to hire all women clerks. meanwhile, maine senator susan collins is defending her yes vote that put kavanaugh over the top. panic during a lil wayne concert in atlanta. you can see it there. the rapper rushed offstage during his performance after reports of shots being fired. police are not confirming any gunfire, but that didn't stop hundreds of people from racing for safety. at least a dozen were injured. a reported tornado touched down in fairfax, oklahoma about 60 miles northeast of tulsa. the storm toppled trees and

power lines, several homes and businesses were damaged but no injuries reported. and what went up came down successfully as planned for spacex. for the first time, a first stage booster off a falcon 9 rocket returned to earth on the west coast. you see it going up there. those are some of our top stories on this columbus day, october 8th. from abc news, this is "world news now." and we begin this half hour with the newest addition to the supreme court. brett kavanaugh just a day away from taking his seat alongside the other eight justices. >> kavanaugh was sworn in by the chief justice john roberts over the weekend. there will be another ceremony at the white house tonight. after weeks of squabbling, protests and sexual misconduct

allegations, last-minute backing from the republican senator susan collins sealed kavanaugh's victory. collins told "60 minutes" last night she is very confident she made the right decision. >> i would have voted no if i disbelieved judge kavanaugh. i just did not think that it was fair to ruin the life of this distinguished judge and his family over allegations that cannot be proven. >> meanwhile, kavanaugh met with his four law clerks, who are all women. that makes him the first justice to have an all-female staff. kavanaugh had pledged to make a special effort to hire women. and president trump is taking aim, in the meantime, at the republican senator lisa murkowski from alaska for breaking with their party to vote no. >> and west virginia senator joe manchin, the only democrat to vote yes, is facing backlash from both sides. abc's brad mielke has more on the political ramifications. >> hey, guys. yeah, this was a tough decision for several senators. first there was the question, who are you going to believe?

then there was another question lingering, when's your next election? red state democrats had to decide, do you defy the president? republicans like susan collins and lisa murkowski aren't running again until 2020 but each saw busloads of female constituents make the trip to washington. so i asked abc news political director rick klein and our political analyst cokie roberts, how do they choose, why do these senators vote the way they voted? >> you have to look at the internals of the senate, and rick knows this very well. when you get to a point that it's clear that kavanaugh is going to be confirmed, at that point, if you're the minority leader you say to joe manchin, go ahead and vote for him because i don't want to lose the seat. and your vote's not going to make any difference. if you're susan collins you say, you know, do i want to stay in the senate? if i do, i better vote for him because i will not be nominated again. i'll be challenged in a primary and lose. it's very much the individual

it's very important for me that i express what i feel. >> reporter: melania trump highlighting the positive impact of u.s. aid. funding her husband has sought to cut. children in malawi waived american flags and sang a celebratory song to welcome the first lady to a school that receives u.s. funding. in ghana, melania trump cuddled a baby boy at the hospital and reflected on the history of slavery to a former prison for slaves after they were shipped across the ocean. the first lady went on a safari in kenya and got an up-close look at conservation efforts, but got perhaps too close to one baby elephant that nearly knocked her over. in contrast to her husband who has made it easier to import elephant tusks and other body parts from certain african nations. that white helmet she wore on her safari sparking controversy on its own. the style associated with the

colonialulic her outfit in egypt, a tie and pants, was interpreted by some as a message on women's rights. like the time she wore a jacket that read "i really don't care. do you?" but standing in front of the great sphinx in egypt, the first lady was in no mood to discuss her fashion choices. >> i want to discuss about what i do, not what i wear. it's very important what we're doing with u.s. aid and what i do with my initiatives. i wish people would focus on what i do, not what i wear. >> the first lady's visit evoking memories when president trump used a vulgar slur to refer to some african nations. the first lady says no one brought that up on her trip. she says she never heard the president use that term in the first place. kendis and lynda? >> jordan, thanks. our tom llamas travelled with the first lady. you can watch his interview this

friday during an abc news special at 10:00 p.m., 9:00 central. now to that horrific deadly crash of a limousine near albany, new york which is raising questions this morning about the safety record of the limo company. 20 people were killed when the limo ran a stop sign, crashed into a parked suv and ended up in that ditch. now, government records show the limo company has been inspected five times in the last two years. after those inspections, vehicles had been taken out of service four times. the victims in the limo were traveling to a birthday party for one of four sisters who were killed. many of their friends also did not survive. >> she was just a great human being all around. like, she just wanted to make sure everyone was happy and she was the peacekeeper of the family. she was the best sister i could have ever had in my life. and i'm so grateful that i had

her and i will cherish her memory forever. >> a pair of newlyweds also among the victims. the national transportation safety board is investigating the crash, which is the deadliest transportation accident in the u.s. in nearly a decade. tropical storm michael could become a category 2 hurricane before it slams into florida's gulf coast later this week. >> michael is expected to make landfall wednesday with winds of up to 100 miles an hour. accuweather's paul williams has more. >> good morning. with michael comes flash flooding, mudslides, gusty winds and rough seas. michael was strengthened to a category 1 into the gulf, possibly even a strong category 1 or a weak 2 by the time he makes landfall in florida. with that in mind, the remnants of michael will shift over towards south carolina and north carolina, causing a problem with the florence recovery effort. michael will by midweek track right along the east coast. monday we have snow throughout wyoming going into the dakotas

and portions of montana, strong storms in between. kendis? lynda? >> clearly a busy day today in the weather department. paul, thank you. a united nations report out today paints a dire picture about climate change. it claims if greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate, there will be worsening food shortages and wildfires among other effects as soon as the year 2040. the study estimates the damage would cost more than $50 trillion. it says only an unlikely transformation of the world's economy in the next few years will avoid the most serious damage. well, lots of hairy four-legged friends filled a small town in arkansas this weekend. >> so, perryville, about 35 miles outside little rock, home to fewer than 1,500 people, but it wants to be the goat capital of the country.

it is time for "this happened" on a monday, and it really kind of sums up this incident that took place in china. so this one bus driver decided to take a shortcut. >> yikes. >> didn't quite work out very well. oh, man. look at that. so -- yeah. so she took an underpass that was too low for the roof of this 47-seater bus here. the footage here taken moments after the collision. >> that roof came right off, it sheared right off. >> it showed that passengers who were dazed and confused from the

wreckage. okay. get this, miraculously none of the 27 passengers or the driver were killed, though two people were taken to the hospital. but i don't think she'll be taking that route anymore. >> i wonder if she said, hey, that bridge looks a little low. >> yeah, at what point do you realize? it's a good thing that it turned out all right. here is something funny that happened right here in new york city. the empire state building lights up every night, most nights with different colors, depending on if it's a holiday, a different team wins. saturday around 11:00 p.m., the lights started going haywire. even two helicopters were circling around the empire state building. so new yorkers took to twitter to go, what's going on here. >> go home, empire. you're drunk. >> they thought the empire state building was drunk or, you know, perhaps someone was programming it wrong. but the leading theory seems to be that a music video was being shot and it was eminem. >> oh, really? >> yeah, his music video being shot.

flavor of potato chips. bet you can't just eat one. bet you can't -- >> bet you can. >> bet you can eat just one. whole new meaning on this monday, october 8th. from abc news, this is "world news now." the debate about potato chips later on. but as we welcome lynda, we're going to start with the horrific limo accident in central new york state that left 20 people dead. >> investigators are trying to determine why that limo blew through a stop sign and crashed into a parked suv outside a store. one witness said the crash sounded like an explosion. >> the victims include four sisters and their friends traveling to a 30th birthday party. we're now learning the company operating the limo has a troubled safety record. abc's maggie rulli is on scene. reeling after the country's worst transportation accident in nearly a decade. >> need multiple ambulances.

>> reporter: 20 people killed at on an upstate new york highway when officials say just around 2:00 p.m. saturday, a limousine blew a stop sign, plowing into this parking lot slamming into an unoccupied suv and into this ditch. >> i heard screaming. i could see this large van and really wrecked. >> reporter: two pedestrians and all 18 people inside that limo were killed. >> i actually have five nieces, but they were the four youngest. and they're all dead. >> reporter: barbara douglas says they were celebrating her youngest niece's 30th birthday. >> 20 fatalities is just horrific. we look at everything. we cast a very broad net to seet >> reporter: the ntsb is now on the scene sifting through the wreckage and investigating how a joyride in that limousine, a modified 2001 ford excursion, could have ended so tragically.

just before sunset yesterday, more than a dozen investigators were down in that ditch where the limo crashed. they were taking photos, looking into any possible angle, trying to find out how such a tragic accident could have ever happened. the ntsb says they plan to stay here on the scene for at least five days. kendis and lynda? >> our maggie rulli there on the scene in schoharie. investigators are looking into several things, including we do know the d.o.t. records on this company shows it owns three vehicles. in the past two years they've been inspected some five times, resulting in vehicles being taken out of service four of those times. >> gives you pause and makes you wonder about those bigger vehicles. >> apparently it's an unregulated end of the industry. you know when you hear about these sorts of accidents, it will probably be a tragedy because it's usually a wedding or some sort of celebration. >> a large group of people who were close. >> yes, indeed. we're going to move on to the breaking news we're getting

out of atlanta in the overnight hours. chaos breaking out at a lil wayne concert. >> crowds were sent running after reports of shots being fired at the a3c festival. police have not confirmed any gunfire. others have described it as simply an altercation. dozens were injured in the mayhem as people tried to jump over fences to flee. the gulf coast is bracing for tropical storm michael. michael is expected to grow into a hurricane by tomorrow morning. it could hit florida as a category 2 hurricane by wednesday. >> a state of emergency has been declared already for parts of the florida panhandle. accuweather's paul williams is tracking the storm for us this morning. paul, good morning. >> good morning, kendis, lynda. well, michael will strengthen, more so as he's leaving the yucatan peninsula right into the heart of the gulf of mexico. expected to strengthen to a category 1 by early tuesday morning. with the lack of shear, expected to bring about problems with coastal flooding in florida, isolated tornados, damaging winds near landfall. unfortunately, michael when making landfall will veer right

over towards south carolina. so the florence recovery will be affected and hindered as a result of these flash flooding rains. lynda? kendis? >> paul, thank you. a powerful tornado ripped through northern oklahoma. several homes and businesses in the town of fairfax have been damaged and widespread power outages were reported. debris on the road forced authorities to shut down a highway. power lines were also knocked down in a nearby town but no injuries were reported. the newly sworn in supreme court justice brett kavanaugh will be sworn in again tonight. this time it's a made for cable news event at the white house in prime time. kavanaugh took the oath over the weekend following a bruising confirmation battle. maine's republican senator susan collins is speaking out about her critical vote, saying she's very comfortable with her decision. abc's tara palmieri has more. >> reporter: newly sworn in justice brett kavanaugh ready to take his seat on the high court.

but still facing a divided nation of angry protests and fierce opposition, a prominent congressional democrat threatening to open an investigation into the accusations of sexual misconduct and perjury if their party wins back the house in november. president trump accusing the democrats of playing politics. >> democrats have become too extreme and too dangerous to govern. republicans believe in the rule of law, not the rule of the mob. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: republicans hoping the battle over kavanaugh will ignite the base and stave off a blue wave in the midterms. >> so i want to thank -- i want to thank the other side for the tactics that have allowed us to kind of energize and get involved our own voters. >> reporter: lawmakers on both sides already feeling the political backlash. president trump told "the washington post" that republican senator lisa murkowski of alaska will, quote, never recover for siding against kavanaugh and will lose her senate seat in 2022. >> i thought it was very, frankly, disgraceful.

i've done so much for alaska. i was shocked to see her vote. >> reporter: democrats may also target moderate republican senator susan collins of maine who cast a crucial vote for kavanaugh. >> i do not believe that brett kavanaugh was her assailant. >> so -- >> i do believe that she was assaulted. i don't know by whom. and i'm not certain when. >> reporter: kavanaugh, a known conservative, shifts the court's balance. something then candidate trump pledged would lead to a change in abortion law. >> do you want to see the court overturn roe v. wade. >> if we put another two, maybe three justices on. that will happen, in my opinion. i am putting pro-life justices on the court. >> reporter: senator collins said kavanaugh told her the law won't change. >> does the president now expect we are going to see roe v. wade overturned? >> both justice gorsuch and justice kavanaugh in their respective nomination hearings

said that roe was settled law. >> reporter: tara palmieri, abc news, the white house. secretary of state mike pompeo is describing his latest meeting with kim jong-un as good and productive as a conversation. north korea's news agency is calling sunday's talks in pyongyang productive and wonderful. pompeo says kim agreed to allow inspectors into a key nuclear testing site that the north reportedly destroyed, but no date was announced for a second summit between kim and president trump. authorities in haiti fear the death toll could rise after saturday's earthquake and sunday's strong aftershock. at least 12 people are dead, including a young boy. nearly 200 people are injured. the 5.9 magnitude quake and the 5.2 aftershock were centered in a remote area in the north where several homes were destroyed. the united states has offered help with relief effort. an unidentified nonflying object is stirring some curiosity in south carolina. it washed ashore on seabrook island. it's a little over 5 feet tall

and feels like soft foam. you get the perspective there with that photo. local officials are asking residents for help figuring out what this is. there have been guesses ranging from a buoy to a ufo. i would definitely go in the ufo category. >> it clearly broke off the millennium falcon. it's a piece when they destroyed the death star. >> yes, it is. it's weird. it looks like some sort of space junk, indeed. >> or like a cover of a car. >> yeah. one family in southern louisiana got quite a surprise at their front door. look at this massive alligator. walks up to their front door then just got comfortable. >> nope. the shocked homeowner called police. officers arrived and took some pictures, of course, of the gator. their online caption, "you never know what you may -- what may
