bridge. we'll look at the live shot. brake lights in the westbound direction. slow and go. just for athe hi rise t continued slow out of the central valley. that's not a surprise. 45-minute drive. and we'll take a look at san francisco. this one towards 101, 280 junction. we have a couple of overturned blocking the right lane. so far i'm not seeing a slow traffic. once crews right the cars, they will see slowing there. san jose is, continualal problems north on 101. 87 your best bet at this hour. >> thank you, sue. breaking news in the east bay. police are searching for a suspect in fremont after someone was found dead inside a home. >> abc 7 news matt keller is live in the grimmer neighborhood where investigators are still on the scene. matt? >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. i was told that investigators are going to try to talk to

witnesses who heard the gunshots early this morning. another key piece of evidence could come from surveillance cameras on homes. officers will be checking the homes in the area. it started 12:30. police were called to charleston way where shots were officers found a person in the home. they person died at the scene. they were utilizing a drone from the alameda county sheriff's office. there was a little bit of time between the gunshots and the call to police. the suspect may have had time to leave the area. this is the second homicide of the year in fremont. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. today marks exactly one year since a firestorm devastated parts of the north bay. flames described entire neighborhoods. in all 44 people were killed. six fires burned 200,000 acres

in four counties. incidents report show the three biggest fire in sonoma and napa started within 15 minutes of each other from 9:45 to 10:00 p.m. by midnight, fires also burped mendocino and lake counties. 8900 structures were destroyed. it would take 23 days before all of those fires were contained. ceremonies to remember and reflect started over the weekend. >> last night neighbors gathered to honor those who lost their lives. a bell rang 44 times, once for each life lost in last year's fires. last night ceremonies included the lighting of the love sculpture to honor the victims and survivors. ceremonies will also take place today, including one planned by sonoma county and

santa rosa officials at courthouse square in santa rosa. the public is invited to use chalk to draw. at 6:00 p.m., the memorial begins. a bell ringer will mark the lives of those who lost their lives. it was the tubbs fire. an inferno roared down over the hillsides and incinerated entire neighborhoods, streets, the neighborhood is gone. dozens of homes were destroyed. surprisingly, the community park was left unscathed. only one home of dozens survived in this part of the neighborhood. an island in a waste land. today just one new home has list especially from the ashes in this development. there is still a long way to go. that's the case in a lot of communities where they are rebuilding but slowly. the red flag warning in

photographer steve were on the west flank of the massive fire where flames jumped highway 101. at first they didn't realize how serious it was. >> we were watching this along with you live on the air. this morning we look back how the terrifying scene unfolded. >> everyone is going in the opposite direction we were. >> we just saw this. this is along highway 101. it is so windy out here. this fire just moving. kaiser permanente. they are evacuating. pulling people out of wheelchairs. this is getting more urgent. you can see the fire right over. look at this. now someone coming out on a stretcher. they are getting to the icu patients. it is a stressful situation as they try to get these very ill people out of here. this is heartbreaking.

they are doing a wonderful job. >> look at what is left of this mobile home park. journeys end mobile home park fire has torn through this and destroyed the entire place. fire is still raging. this is why they evacuated the hospital. this was burning right next to it. right behind me, a gun shop and cannabis shop. that explains all the popping we have been hearing for hours. and rounds going off. now we are pushing forward north a little bit more. we have found more destruction. this is the apple on airway and hubbard. a neighborhood that has been wiped out. we are in coffey park. i was interviewing cal fire battalion chief early this morning. and he said this is a fire of a lifetime. >> that is so hard to see the images again. you see the hours that went by.

in the grand scheme of things, such a short amount of time. only 4 or 5 hours. we saw all of that destruction. >> that's what happens when winds get up to hurricane levels and they're not supposed to. not overland. more than 70-mile-per-hour winds. >> just wiped out homes without any warning. >> the flames -- the winds say, no, we're starting over here. firefighters, wind. >> i think for everyone in the bay area that's something they will never forget. >> absolutely. >> even if you weren't directly impacted, you have a friend. you have perhaps a family member that was. or you just remember what the community felt like on that day when there was so much chaos. we didn't know what was happening. the flames were spread so quickly. and it lasted, what, 23 days. >> right. until they were had he finally all put out. shout out to everyone helped. it was chaos. >> many heroes. many of them we don't even know.

it spread to many areas of the bay area, including contra costa. people reported falling ash, some land anything a man's pool. fire officials urge people to wait indoors with windows and doors closed until the air quality gets better. >> solano county fire as we mark one year since the deadly wildfires that devastated parts of the north bay began. flames leveled entire neighborhoods, trapping people without any warning. 44 people died, 22 in sonoma county. hundreds of people attended a service in santa rosa to remember those who died. and the fire destroyed and damaged parts of the campus. >> the shock, the pain, the fear, and the trauma are the same for all of us. we all went through all of that. >> a lot of people were underinsured, so they are unable to rebuild their homes.strong. it will always be be strong. our people come together and we

support each other. >> the fire chief there says new safeguards are in place. the department has the ability to send electronic alerts to the entire community in the event of an emergency. california seams top emergency official is accuse something north bay wildfire cleanup crews of fraud. associated press obtained the letter the emergency services director september to the u.s. army corps. they complained crews damaged their property.aintby the ton to remove debris. some are accused of taking too much dirt and damaging driveways and retaining walls so they could get bigger payments. the army corps said there is no reported evidence of fraud. abc 7 news is reporting live team coverage throughout the day to the wildfires one later. all day we will look at how the devastating fires changed the lives of so many people and how they have met the challenge of rebuilding moving ahead. you can watch on air and online

at abc7news.com. now we want the get back to breaking news we have been tracking in the east bay. fremont police have been searching all night long for a suspect in a homicide. abc 7 reported matt keller has been getting new details on this investigation. matt? >> reporter: jessica, this investigation has stretched into its sixth hour behind crime scene tape. officers still gathered at the end of charleston way. this all started 12:30 this morning. police were called here for reports of shots fired. officers found the victim in the home. that person died at the scene. officers then started searching the neighborhood for the male suspect. they even used a drone in their search. no word if they made an arrest. police are searching homes for surveillance cameras. they will be be interviewing people who heard the gunshots. this is the second homicide of the year for fremont.

this, get past it. >> the devastation is enormous. it will take a long time to rebuild neighborhoods. you can rebuild the house but the neighborhood and the trees and the landscape and all the people coming back, it is going to take a lot of time. >> what overwhelmed you a year ago as you went neighborhood to neighborhood and saw all of this destruction? >> sit really was the size of the stkrbgdestruction. it is hard to see how many people were chased out of their homes in the middle of the night. >> at the time back then what was of running through your mind as far as disbelief? >> it truly was disbelief. it was trying to grab the size of it and how to manage the resources to get people out of houses. he wanted to make sure people were safe and get them out of their homes. >> here we are one year later. what point are we add? we are seeing homes rebuild in some cases. it's not going to be the same.

>> it will take a long time. especially after a devastating event like this. good news is this community has come together. a lot of houses are coming back. community supports have been amazing. it still is. people are working hard to put the place back together. >> you were telling me even if we have another year go by, 10 years go by there will still be evidence in these fires from a year ago. >> i expect you will see evidence of these fires 10 years from now just because of the size of it. you look and there is a new house behind us. there is a burned lot be hinds us. it takes a long time to put that together. >> we are rebuilding the houses but to rebuild vegetation, trees, the natural environment, that is a whole other ball game. >> absolutely. and to put the neighborhoods back together. people lived here with family and friends. this house will be occupied soon but there will be no neighbors beside it. the community has to stick

woke with robin roberts at gma. >> if i can haveeopl foll tweatin the you're on this earth. >> it is the deadly crash in a decade. >> it included four sisters and a newlywed couple going to a 30th birthday party. people who live near the crash site say it's a dangerous intersection. and the tragedy in new york state is an eery reminder of a limousine crash on the san mateo bridge that killed five women celebrating an upcoming wedding. one was of the bride-to-be. mechanical failure caused the vehicle to go up in flames, trapping the women inside. two years later, governor brown signed a law requiring they have two rear side doors and a pop-out window. so passengers can get out in case of fire or another emergency. >> that was just so horrific.
