michael. abc's maggie rulli has the latest for us right now from panama city live. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: kendis and lynda, good morning. places like this are desperate for power, water, just really basic resources, but authorities say while they're trying to come back and get into these homes right now, their focus remains on search and rescue. this is all that's left of mexico beach. taking a direct hit from hurricane michael and its 155-mile-per-hour winds just shy of a category 5 storm. >> we let the current take us to the next stop, and then we'd grab on to a tree. >> reporter: a husband and wife who stayed behind remember michael's raw power as the water rushed in. the two finally finding safety in a nearby boat. abc's ginger zee and her team rode out the storm in this condo complex, one of the few buildings left standing. >> so we've now made it about ten blocks, and the destruction hasn't ended. >> reporter: at bay medical

center in nearby panama city. >> the wind took a pass and when it broke those doors out and broke these doors out, the wind made a wind tunnel through the emergency department. >> reporter: doctors describe trying to hold the doors shut to save their critical patients from the storm's force. now the entire hospital is under emergency evacuation. block by block now in ruins. trees cutting through the middle of this house, roofs blown straight off. >> search and rescue. >> reporter: search and rescues going door to door fearing there could be more people trapped inside. >> the first thing is making sure everybody is safe. >> reporter: the job ahead is overwhelming as michael continues to spread his path of destruction northward bringing hurricane force winds to georgia and battering the coast with heavy rain. >> i was sinking. it was sinking fast. >> reporter: rescues under way in virginia as the already soaked carolinas are drenched with even more rain. and while neighborhoods like this one are devastated, we've also seen them come together. one man was out grilling hot

meals for his neighbors and even waffle house restaurants have re-opened their doors for locals and first responders less than 24 hours after this massive storm. kendis and lynda. >> maggie rulli in panama city beach, florida. thanks so much. >> that's the critical thing, knowing that the waffle house is back open. signs are good. while many reporters had to scramble to get to mexico beach stm, gger s or sea after the already thashe hurricane struck. she was stunned as she watched a blue house across the street get lifted from its foundation and roll down the street. the owner of the house was in another state and contacted ginger after watching the report. >> i'm heartbroken. we've only had the house five months. we've been coming to mexico beach for over ten years. >> wow. >> and we just love it. we finally bought a place there that we were going to enjoy with our young family now. we'll be back. we will rebuild and we'll come back. and we have lots of -- they're

just good people there. >> and many residents are still trying to find out if their homes are still standing, but they're being kept away because of conditions in many areas that are still too dangerous. and we're following breaking news in the case of "washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. the turkish government reportedly claims to have graphic audio and video recordings proving he is dead. abc's stephanie ramos is live in washington now with the details. stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, lynda. you're absolutely right. "the washington post" just reporting that they do have proof from turkish officials who have spoken to u.s. officials saying that they have audio and video recordings proving that khashoggi was killed and all while here in washington lawmakers are demanding that the president do something about it. some lawmakers are demanding the u.s. stop selling weapons to saudi arabia until u.s. investigators find missing journalist jamal khashoggi. >> i would not be in favor of stopping a country from spending

$110 billion. >> reporter: khashoggi is a u.s. resident but a saudi native and is now feared dead. he hasn't been seen in a week after walking into the saudi arabian consulate in turkey. senators in washington are now questioning american support for the saudi military campaign in yemen and are pushing for sanctions under a human rights law. >> president trump's unwillingness to set out any consequences or even a threat of consequences essentially tells the saudis that we're okay with this kind of conduct and behavior. >> reporter: "the washington post" reports u.s. intelligence intercepts revealed a saudi plan to trap khashoggi. while president trump defends his position, rapper kanye west was defending him. >> it was something about when i put this hat on, it made me feel like superman. you made a superman. that's my favorite superhero and you made a superman cape for me. >> reporter: the monologue in the oval office touched on

racism, tax breaks, prison reform, mental health and the need for art programs in schools. >> if he don't look good, we don't look good. this is our president. i answered your question. i don't answer questions in simple sound bites. you are tasting a fine wine. it has multiple notes to it. >> reporter: the president welcoming the praise. >> that's pretty impressive. >> reporter: that meeting appearing to shock many in the room, but despite all of this, kanye's visit to the oval office, pressure to act against saudi arabia, the president says he is intently focusing on the devastation left behind by hurricane michael. back over to you guys. >> yeah, but quite a fine wine there in the oval office. stephanie ramos for us in d.c. this morning. thousands of voter applicants in georgia are on hold because of a controversial new law. the state passed legislation last year which says a voter's registration and driver's license have to match. for example, a missing middle name or a different address on a

driver's license will put an application on hold. georgia's secretary of state ryan kemp's office has flagged 53,000 applicants. kemp is a republican running for governor. democrats say he's using the law to suppress the minority vote. kemp's office says the flagged registrations can be sorted out at election sites or they can cast provisional ballots. well, time now for a look at your weather for this friday morning. >> good morning. continuing to track tropical storm michael, it is moving very quickly offshore now. by 8:00 a.m. it should be well out to sea and then it will continue to make progress off to the north and east likely maintaining tropical storm status straight through the weekend. as for that rain, it is going to be coming to an end throughout the northeast. winds still staying a bit blustery. the air getting significantly cooler but drier as well. i'm meteorologist julia weiden with your accuweather forecast.

a routine court hearing in oregon was just about to finish up when this took place. the man on trial for robbery suddenly jumped up and tried grabbing a police officer's gun. court deputies managed to tackle him. he was later convicted in that trial and now may face new charges for going after the gun. the fyre festival organizer has been sentenced to six years in prison. a federal judge called billy mcfarland a serial fraudster for orchestrating a $26 million scam.

the festival was promoted as an exclusive musical event in the bahamas with some tickets selling for $100,000. people were stranded without enough food, water or bathrooms. safety fears have grounded the military's fleet of f-35 fighter jets. the pentagon announced the move in the wake of last month's crash in south carolina. a marine fighter went down in a marsh. the pilot ejected before the crash. investigators are concerned about the aircraft's fuel tubes. the grounding affects more than 250 jets. the f-35 costs an estimated $100 million apiece to build. wall street opens this morning on a turbulent note. the dow dropped another 545 points yesterday. a two-day tumble of nearly 1400 points. analysts says investors are still nervous that rising interest rates and tensions over trade could hurt growth. and apple is taking a step to fight robocalls. it's filed a patent for technology that allows an iphone

take a look at that purple sky. purple is what people saw in the florida panhandle as hurricane michael was pulling away. weather experts say that rare sight -- that's so beautiful -- was the result of a perfect combination of factors that included light from the setting sun, low clouds and plenty of moisture in the air. >> that's during the daylight hours there. in the meantime, an armed burglary suspect was arrested in california's malibu state park and that's where a father was brutally gunned down while camping with his two young daughters this june. >> now police are trying to determine if the crimes are somehow connected. abc's kayna whitworth has more. >> reporter: authorities in california swarming a man with their guns drawn deep in a ravine near malibu creek state park where a father of two young girls was shot and killed. 42-year-old anthony rauda is suspected of several burglaries in the area, and this morning

authorities telling abc news they want to question rauda about a string of shootings in the popular park including the june murder of tristan beaudette. it's my understanding that in some surveillance video, rauda was seen with a rifle. >> right. >> reporter: did that make investigators think it is possible that this person could also be responsible for the shootings and this murder? >> certainly it makes you wonder. you know, you've got an individual out here in a place where you don't see that kind of behavior committing crimes, so it's on everybody's mind that there may be a possible connection. >> reporter: beaudette, a scientist, shot and killed while camping with his two young daughters, both in the tent with him but unharmed. after his murder several more people came forward with stories of being shot at while in the popular park. authorities not calling rauda a suspect in the murder, but they do have his rifle in custody. ballistic tests are under way along with bullet comparisons. kayna whitworth, abc news. to the east coast now and new york city prosecutors have

dropped one of six sexual assault charges against harvey weinstein. it involved allegations made by the actress lucia evans stemming from a 2004 encounter. now, prosecutors say it may have been consensual. she was one of the first women to publicly accuse weinstein of sexual assault. weinstein has repeatedly denied the accusations of nonconsensual sex. a jury in michigan has seen this dramatic video of a man shooting a teenager. watch as it plays out here, the 14-year-old running away after knocking on jeffrey ziegler's door. walker said that he was lost after missing his bus. ziegler came out holding a shotgun. the retired firefighter shot several times, it appears, but misses. on the stand ziegler said he tripped and the gun went off. police say the surveillance video shows otherwise. in court ziegler's wife said she thought the high school student was a burglar. ziegler is charged with assault with intent to murder. closing arguments expected

today. a new survey finds the number of children who don't have any vaccines has quadrupled in the last 16 years. according to the cdc the number of unvaccinated children in america went from 0.3% in 2001 to 1.3% last year. the cdc calls the number worrying. experts say the increase is likely because of what they call misperceptions about the safety and importance of vaccines. the philadelphia eagles have started week six of the nfl season by flying into new jersey and picking up a win. the defending super bowl champions turned an early turnover by the new york giants into a touchdown. philadelphia winning, 34-13. new york giants with some problems this season. colin kaepernick has picked up an award from harvard. he was among eight people honored for their contributions to black history and culture. kaepernick is suing the nfl for colluding to keep him sidelined because he knelt during the national anthem to highlight racial injustice. and up next in "the pulse,"
