another transit option will return to san francisco on monday. electric rental scooters. late today a judge rejected a plan to block the city's program, so commuters will be able to scoot and skip in the city. "abc 7 news" reporter melanie woodrow has this story. melanie. >> reporter: i like that, scoot and skip. one of the companies that had applied for a permit but was denied felt that the way the sfmta issued the two permits was unfair. however, lime was unsuccessful in its attempt to halt the process today. scooters are coming back to san francisco on monday. >> we're really excited. we have 625 scooters ready to go out. >> reporter: the san francisco municipal transportation agency issued permits to scooter companies skip and scoot. >> our approach has been to work with governments and cities to make sure the process and perhaps are serving all members of the community. >> reporter: scooter company lime questioned whether the choice was fair. lime, whose scooters are all over oakland, filed a temporary restraining order against sfmta
6:09 pm
is an attempt to halt the process. a judge denied the temporary restraining order today. the san francisco city attorney's office says the permitrogram been fair and transparent. also, that san francisco residents deserve companies that are safe and reliable. they are working out policies that will come back to city council for final approval in the coming week. >> people that use them will throw them, leave them on the corners. >> reporter: our own "abc 7 news" producer took thinks pictures of discarded executers in lake merritt. >> people are lazy. i have never seen a broken one. >> reporter: inexpensive and easily accessible way to get around. >> i like to ride them and they're fun. >> reporter: it is not without speed bumps along the way. skip tells us that they are happy with the decision and focused on the future. interestingly, lime also said they were happy with the decision because there will be

another hearing in november where sfmta will explain its process. bottom line here, you can expect to see those scooters back in san francisco on monday. hopefully they will be in the bike lane and not here on the sidewalk. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, "abc 7 news." >> all right. we will see. thank you so much, melanie. by the way, we checked with the city of san jose and found out that bird, lime and skip are operating there. city officials say there's nothing from prohibiting the companies from operating there, adding that the city council decided not to intervene whooil the state department of transportation prepared a for malscheme. a grass fire broke out off interstate 505 north of vacaville. it burned 160 acres of grass before firefighters got a handle on it about 1:30 this afternoon. no one was murt ahurt and no structures burned. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a look at the conditions we can expect. >> dan, those winds will be picking up in the hills, which
6:11 pm
will dry out our air and increase our fire danger. right now we have a fire weather watch for the north and east bay his that begin at midnight sunday and runs until 12:00 p.m. monday. 5 to 10% humid will spell high fire danger. we are at the peak of fire danger. look at the winds. monday night sunday, they're light. they start to pick up and come out of the northeast, which is a downsloping wind moving from the dry land to the ocean, and that really dries out our air. so the gusty wind will drop the humidity and you will see here hour-by-hour how low the humidity will go. at midnight it is still pretty good on sunday, but then down to double digits and then single digits by the time we head into sunday afternoon. dan and ama. >> thank you, sandhya. what kind of difference can $14,000 make in a person's life?
6:12 pm

breaking news now for your friday commute. sky 7 shows the backup on eastbound interstate 80 because of a crash east of the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic heading to berkley and sacramento is affected. the cars were just moved to the parking lot of the toll plaza. the lanes are now reopened, but, of course, the resulting backup is slowing things down significantly. the crash was reported just before 6:00, so about 20 minutes or so ago. three to four cars were involved. tow trucks have been taking them
6:15 pm
away, and now they are, as i said, out of the way. at least one person was hurt. we don't know how seriously. some relief for worried parents after a lockdown was listed this afternoon at futures academy in oakland. sky 7 was overhead as students waited outside while a robbery suspect was arrested on campus. police say it started when three lyft passengers robbed their driver in san leandro, then ran into a nearby housing complex and on to school grounds. eventually one of the passengers was arrested in the school bathroom, the two others got away. >> over the summer we told you about a homeless man in oakland named drew. you may remember, his belonging was tossed into the lake by a frustrated jogger nicknamed jogger joe. the community quickly came together to try to find drew an apartment. more than $14,000 has been raised so far, but drew is still homeless and still living under the pergola at lake merritt. we asked "abc 7 news" reporter lyanne melendez and she joins us live from oakland city hall.
6:16 pm
lyanne. >> reporter: you know, we couldn't ignore this story after reading the comments made by many of you on the gofundme page. unfortunately for drew, i don't think much will change. by now we thought the homeless man known as drew would be getting the help he needs, but there he was waking up when we found him under the pergola at lake merritt. what about the efforts to find you a home? >> i'm done. i own a home. >> reporter: you own a home? >> yes. >> reporter: it was the cellphone video of a jogger throwing his belongings in the lake that prompted some in the oakland community to help find drew a home. to date that gofundme effort brought in more than $14,000, but donors started complaining after noticing that drew was still homeless, asking, can someone please update and, i'm starting to think you guys just straight-up stole our money. one of the two people in charge of collecting this money finally responded, saying, we were able to use the money to get true housing, but he has refused this
6:17 pm
he does not have an id or bank account and we will not be giving him the money in cash, so we will be donating the money to local homeless rights organizations and give people the option of a refund. a few people who see drew on a regular basis say, we have to stop throwing money at problems we can't solve. >> i mean if those are his wishes, i mean we should let him be. at the same time, if you donate money you want to know where your money went. >> i honestly think it is really a mental health issue and not necessarily a homeless issue. >> reporter: today he tried to tell me his name was, in fact, jaru with a j. >> reporter: you know, there was some money being collected -- >> it had nothing to do with me. the person that was drew, not jaru. that's somebody named drew. it was fixed and they moved on. >> reporter: so who are you? >> who are you? >> reporter: i'm lyanne. >> you got better questions? >> reporter: again, by highlighting this story we wanted to, again, highlight the
6:18 pm
fact that like drew or jaru, there are many people, hundreds of people in the san francisco bay area who are homeless and in need of services. i'm going to hand it over to you because of this issue. >> yes. all right, lyanne, thank you. oakland has several perhaps to give homeless men and women a roof over their heads. one is turning tent cities into shed communities and helping resident find employment and housing. it seems to be working. according to the city, of the 127 people in the program so far, 80 have moved on to either transitional or permanent housing. 23 have found employment. since january oakland has added three shed communities at the park near lake merritt, at 27th and north gate, and under 880 at 6th and castro streets. we just learned that work to stabilize fremont street at the salesforce transit center is done. shoring work is completed on the

two levels below from what we understand. it has been over 17 days since a cracked beam forced the closure of the transit center and fremont street. the transit authority says fremont street has been restriped and stabilized and is on schedule to reopen on wednesday. work will continue over the weekend, but clearly they are making some pretty good progress it seems. >> all right. . well, speaking of the weekend we want to talk about the weather. >> is it the weekend already? >> it is. >> spencer christian is off. sandhya patel is here. i lose track, you know, sandhya. >> of course, because, you know, we look alike. you know what? it is friday. it is okay. as we take a look at live doppler 7, spencer definitely took a nice day off. you can see clear skies here on our radar. there's no rain. we do need the rain, but there isn't any on our radar. this afternoon it was a warm day. 88 in concord. 84, napa. san rafael, 84. 83 in redwood city.

6:21 pm
the fog will be pulled away by a wind direction that is going to switch. it is going to be more of an off-shore flow, which is obviously going to dry us out and raise the fire danger. tomorrow morning, temperatures are going down. very chilly in the morning, in the 40s in the north bay, valleys. for the rest of you, it will be cool. clear skies are expect. tomorrow afternoon, here is how it looks in the south bay. 80 in san jose. 83, gilroy. 78 in milpitas. on the peninsula, mid 70s from menlo park to palo alto. 65 degrees in pacifica. 64 in half moon bay. 68, downtown san francisco. remember, you were 78 today, so you will notice the difference. sunset district, 64. south city, 70 degrees. in the north bay, 60s near the beaches. all the way to the 80s in places like santa rosa, petaluma. in the east bay, a nice day. 74 in oakland. 76 in union city. 77, castro valley. inland areas will be sunny and mild. accuweather seven day forecast,

noticed, the battle for your vote next month is being waged ferociously on your television. candidates pitching themselves for your vote and, of course, the proposition goes, prop this, prop that, a dozen of them. everything from extending the gas tax, which we talked about extensively at the top of the broadcast, to daylight saving time to the cops of dialysis. they can be confusing. you know that old joke, i'm voting no on yes this tuesday. while it can be hard to figure out what the propositions do or don't do, they can have a lasting impact on the lives of every californian or in cases like prop 12, which deals with how farm animals are treated, help define our values and priorities. as part of our commitment to building a bay -- better bay area, we will report in-depth on many of the propositions and also on the candidates on the ballot november 6th. we expect a lot from our elected officials. what really matters is that we do our part as well by making informed decisions on election day.
