i'm dan ashleyment. >> and i'm ama daetz. facebook is revealing new details about that massive cyberhack, and it may be worse than you thought. >> there is good news, though. nearly 29 million users were impacted, not 50 million as the company originally feared. >> however, a lot of personal information was taken, more than previously revealed. that includes phone numbers, search histories, and details about people's recent locations. >> this hack has a lot of people asking and wondering are there better ways to protect the information out there. >> one local tech company is using an old school novelty item to beat highway. jobina fortson has more. >> reporter: the >> there is a whole lot of love on haight street. but nothing says '60s like a lava lamp. >> they've always been looked at as super tricky and super cool. >> they're hard to find these t cloud flare. >> these lava lamps are doing

more than setting a vibe at cloud flare. they're helping to encrypt the internet. >> it builds a barrier to websites you visit every day. keeping them secure. a hot button issue since the massive facebook hack compromising the information of millions. >> if you can't trust them, then you ruin the point of facebook, at which point why are we all using facebook? >> could facebook or any website use this 1963 invention to help in the future? >> it's hard to really connect them with internet security. well, one of the major pieces of internet security is encryption. >> most websites have a little lock indicating it's encrypted. >> how the lava lamps play into this, to do encryption, you need to be able to derive a key. >> the keys need to be unpredictable. cloud flare uses this camera to record the randomness of the lava, and turns it into their key, while looking cool at the same time. >> they're a really nice

addition to our lobby. >> jobina fortson, abc 7 news. >> facebook has secured the accounts that were impacted, but it is still in the process of notifying people. in the next few days, users will see a message pop up in their news feeds with instructions. if you don't want to wait, head to abc 7 news with instructions on how to find out now. in grass fire in solano county burned 160 acres of grass north of vacaville. no one was hurt, but it could be a sign of what is to come this weekend. we have some tricky conditions that we should expect, hot and dry. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with more. sandhya? >> we'll be facing critical fire conditions this upcoming weekend. a fire weather watch for the north and east bay hills until 12:00 p.m. monday. northeasterly winds could gust up to 50 miles an hour, lowering the humidity 5 to 10%, and that means any fires that do develop will spread rapidly. hour by hour we go, midnight sunday, the winds are still light. wamp them ramp up coming out of

the northeast in santa rosa, cloverdale. when it gets gusty like that, it really dries out all the fuels. the vegetation will be dried out. and as a result, the humidity values will go down. not so much sunday at midnight, but watch those humidity values drop to the teens. even the single digits by time we head into sunday afternoon, and again monday morning. this is why fire dangler be elevated this weekend. ama? >> thank you, sandhya. the clock is ticking as search and rescue crews work to find survivors in the devastation left by hurricane michael. at least 14 people are dead. 200 people have been rescued. and 106 homes and businesses are without power. the hurricane leveled entire communities in florida, georgia and the carolinas, hitting florida's panama city and mexico beaches the hardest. emily hanson and her mother were shocked by what they saw. >> it's pretty devastating. everybody we know lost their house. everybody. and their jobs. >> crews have checked at least 25,000 homes and buildings for survivors.

they expect to finish the search tomorrow afternoon. san francisco police arrested 41 hotel worker, including their union president at a rally outside san francisco's marriott marquis this evening. hundreds rallied on fort street blocking traffic. 3,000 marriott workers went on strike demanding higher wages and job security. it's part of a nationwide action. the protesters arrested tonight have been cited with misdemeanors and then released. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. we've devoted more time, resources and reporting to issues reporting your quality of life, like development. >> that's a big one, of course. san francisco's salesforce tower and millennium tower have led the transformation of the skyline. construction cranes crowd oakland like those at the mcarthur bart transit village. >> and today we saw plans for a 17-story office tower across from san jose's plaza de cesar chavez. this as a century old foundry

this is a matter of life and death. you need to get people who are qualified in that tower. >> a warning from a bay area congressman about the shortage of air traffic controllers at sfo and the potential impact on safety for anyone who flies. >> dan noyes is here now with an abc 7 news i-team investigation. dan? >> well, dan and ama, the story started with a tip from a woman who lives in the flight path near sfo. she is worried after a chance meeting with an air traffic controller who says he's overworked, tired and stressed. she asked me to investigate. 1400 flights took off or landed at san francisco international just today. even with all the technology in the cockpits and the control tower, there is room for human error. >> where is this guy going? >> july of last year it took a

pilot on the ground to figure out that an air canada flight was to be land on a taxi way where four planes were waiting. at the last possible moment, the air canada pilot realized the mistake and aborted the landing, missing the planes on the ground by just a few feet. you can see the air canada jet light them up. >> air canada flew directly over us. >> yeah, i saw that guy. >> we came within ten feet of having america's greatest air disaster. >> federal investigators place blame squarely on the air canada pilots, but the airline encountered only one air traffic duty was on duty at the time controlling everything he was tasked. a second controller was on break. air canada claimed there was a significant air traffic control threat at sfo. east bay congressman mark desaunier who serves on the house transportation committee is concerned about the shortage of air traffic controllers. staffing is at a 30 year low.

>> it takes a tragedy to say we've got to fix. this. >> the union for san francisco's international air traffic tells me they have only 20 of 30 slots filled. >> the rope is stretched as thin as it's going to go. >> controllers are working overtime and six days. >> we're working later hours into the evening. we're working early in the morning. people cover schedules across the 24-hour clock, and they're doing it on six-day weeks. so it's getting people burnt out. >> same problem at the oakland air route air traffic control center that covers 10% of the earth's surface, including the entire pacific ocean. they have just 165 controllers out of 220, and it takes years to train a controller. >> if it takes four years to train somebody, they should be hiring my replacement today. they're hiring the replacement for the person that left two years ago. >> oakland center's union president scott condi tells me air traffic controllers are professionals who would never put the public at risk.

if they become too busy they'll slow down the air traffic. >> we will ensure the system is safe by metering the traffic. and you'll see things like air traffic control delays. that becomes more prevalent as you have staffing shortages across the country. >> and then you start pushing the limits of fatigue, you've got something to worry about. >> abc news aviation consultant john nance told me from a seattle office that long overtime from staff shortages can take a toll. >> you can have a controller who slows everything down because he or she is getting tired. but now an emergency comes. can they think as fast as needed? >> just last week several of desaulnier's measures were signed into law. now he is turning to the shortage and the risk that presents. >> we just have to make sure we have the best people. and particularly in the high cost areas there has to be a differential because of the cost of living. we're trying to do that in congress, but we need to get more qualified people in those hours as soon as possible.

and i don't believe in that. >> you can see more of melania trump's exclusive interview with abc news on "nightline" tonight starting just after 12:30 a.m. right here on abc 7. stay tuned for that. but for the moment, let's turn your attention to the weekend weather forecast. >> yes. sandhya patel has what's heading our way. sandhya? >> good-looking weather is heading our way. let me show you live doppler 7. we have a couple of clouds going through the bay area. but i want to show you southern california. the last couple of hours, they have seen strong thunderstorms. seeing them now, our radar is tracking it, and some downpours down in so cal. so remember the system that brought us the cooler than average conditions the last couple of days? that's the same system producing this weather that you're seeing in southern california. now since we're on the topic of rain, let's talk about el nino. the climate prediction center has issued an el nino watch. there is a 70 to 75% chance of a weak el nino this upcoming fall and winter. it's too early to say how much precip or what kind of precipitation we will get. one thing is for sure. they've been observing that the

sea surface temperatures near the equator have been running above average in recent months. so we'll keep an eye on it for you. in the meantime, as predicted, it was a warmer day by a good 10 to 15 degrees. just about everywhere in the 70s and 80s today. 78 in san francisco. mid-80s, santa rosa, san rafael, 81 in oakland. 88 degrees in concord. 84 in san jose and 85 in livermore. right i know those temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. still pretty comfortable as we look at a live picture from our east bay hills camera. it is just a beautiful view because we don't have any fog to speak of. fog is back, though, tomorrow, which means cooler and breezier. warming up again on sunday and monday. but that also means elevated fire danger as it becomes gusty in the hills during that sunday, monday time period. tomorrow morning it's going to be in 40s and 50s. the chill here in the north bay where the coldest areas are expected, in the low to mid-40s. if you have early plans, make sure you have an extra layer. tomorrow in the south bay 80 in

san jose. 82 morgan hill. 80 in cupertino. on the peninsula, sunny day, 73 in san mateo. 75 in redwood city. mid-60s along the coast, and breezy. 64 in pacifica, sunset district. 68 degrees downtown san francisco. north bay, anywhere from the 60s to the 80s. 80 degrees in santa rosa. 66 stinson beach. a nice looking day there, 77 fremont. head inland, and it's mild and sunny. 83, concord. 82 in livermore. i do want to show you what's going to happen tomorrow evening. we're going to start to see patches of fog expanding along the coast by tomorrow night, and watch what happens as we head towards sunday. while the fog is there sunday morning, it is just going to get wiped out by the down sloping winds sunday night. that's what's going to elevate our fire danger. but for the weekend, it is going to be nice for the half moon bay art and pumpkin festival, if you're going. tomorrow 64 degrees, and then sunday a little warmer, 69 degrees. accuweather seven-day forecast, breezy and cooler with mid-60s to mid-80s.
