good morning. thanks for joining us on this sunday. october 149. i'm matt keller. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. lisa? >> matt, good morning to you. we're starting out with a good deal of fog. it's moved inside the bay. it's keeping us cool this morning. by the afternoon, the temperatures will have those full microclimates once again. there's also a red flag warning in effect that lasts through 12:00 tomorrow afternoon. for the north and east bay hills, part of the santa clara county there around mt. hamilton, you can see it's highlighted. the winds are switching around to the northeast, 20 to 35 miles per hour. the gusts later on tonight could be in excess of 50 and 55 miles an hour. from the north bay, from sonoma, to napa, the highlighted areas once again, just like last weekend, very, very windy and right now, as we look at the hilltop winds, they're over 25

miles an hour. the gusts straight out of the north at knoxville street, mt. tam, 17 mile an hour gusts. in the east bay, about 12 miles an hour. they will continue to increase throughout the day, the afternoon, the overnight hours. it's 57 in hayward and oakland right now. we're talking about 70s by noontime with numbers coming up into the 80s later on today inland. matt? >> thanks, lisa. bone-dry conditions, low humidity and strong winds putting firefighters on high alert. pg&e putting customers on high alert. their power may be cut off to prevent wildfires. the story from the east b >> kids and their parents touring an open house at hayward fire station number two. it just reopened after a seismic retrofit. just in time. >> i look at all the dry areas i see around sniept this is a very unstable atmosphere for us. >> red flag fire danger making

firefighters uneasy. >> we're on edge because we know that any spark from a lawn mower or any type of somebody may be pulling off the side of the road which sparks the wildfire. >> contra costa fire department training facility opened its doors to the public part of fire prevention month. >> we have to support our firefighters who do a tremendous job. >> all eyes on the di ab oablo >> any little spark can do a lot of damage as we've seen over the past few years. >> that's why the department is boosting staffing levels this weekend. and a lot more. >> during this red flag weekend, contra costa county fire will stage a strike team here. they'll be ready to go in case a wildfire breaks out. that's the new normal. >> we don't know what the new normal will be. but based on what happened last week, we know that this can make a difference. >> last sunday, a strike team from contra cost a county helped

to get this wild land fire under control in solano county. they'll be ready to go again if fire breaks out. in concord cornell barnard, abc 7 news. the widespread devastation from hurricane michael, this is in mexico beach, florida, where most of the town has been destroyed. at least 17 people are dead. there are fears that number will climb much higher. teams of rescue workers on the ground looking for people who may be trapped in the rubble. abc news reporter, janae norman tells us crews have never seen damage like this before. >> the massive cleanup and search and rescue efforts under way after hurricane michael made landfall in mexico beach. these before and after images showed the extent of the devastation. entire neighborhoods leveled. >> everybody we know lost their house. everybody. and their jobs. >> the devastation, like a bomb went off here. >> further la,ai lo herhusband. the orm preventing first responders from getting there in

time. >> it was like a freight train coming at us. got me out. but he was already gone by the time i got here. >> panama city, crews going door to door looking for anyone who may be trapped in the rubble. >> we were just surprised by the sheer damage. this type of destruction, you know, we haven't seen it since i was a kid, hurricane andrew. this is pretty extensive. >> john pan dough low ignored evacuation efforts as he and his dog took shelter in a bedroom closet. >> i was like this. i was sitting like this with the dog and she would not leave my side. she would not move. >> efforts also under way to save animals affected b the storm. power outages and lack of clean water creating unhealthy conditions requiring evacuations from the animal shelter in panama city. the furry victims brought to safety from a shelter nearly three hours away. taking them somewhere safe in

short shift of three hours. so how will benefits with a three-hour shift. >> some workers claim to work multiple jobs to make ends meet or would like to but can't because of the hotel's scheduling. >> marriott would come back to the table and talk to us. >> the protests aren't without headaches. one person can hear it from her room. >> room service isn't working on running. the housekeeping is mediocre at best. the fedex is not shipping out packages, which was an impact for us. >> david blank opted out of housekeeping for rewards points. >> in the hopes that they really negotiate this deal and get it over with quickly. they do have great employees. >> the union shas in other cities like boston and detroit, negotiations aren't going well. >> marriott clearly didn't take us seriously in either instance. it's sad that they want to

continue the strike. >> downtown san francisco, joe bin a fortin, abc 7 news. the union that represents thousands of patient care technical workers announced a walkout on october 23rd. it will last for three days. strikes are planned at four other medical campuses. they walked out once before in may. ucsf will reschedule appointments but the emergency department will remain open. lisa, we're talking about cooler temperatures this morning. but really in the afternoon, hot temperatures inland, right? >> the offshore event is on, the winds are beginning to pick up in the upper elevations. a live look at the roof camera. a cool 55 degrees here with 50 in santa rosa. starting out cool and gray with the visibility issues in the north bay. but warm, sunny, bre low relative humidity for high fire danger the next 24 to 30 hours.

products in june. backers of the law say it will help prevent them from using tobacco. san francisco's ban begins in january. the examiner reports sommer chants want the city to reduce the fees they're charged or be allowed to sell cannabis. today visitors to san francisco's presidio have a chance to relive one of the most emotionally charged incompetent soeds of the vietnam war. it happened in the bay area. the men who participated in it paid a steep price. here's anchor dan ashley with the details. >> keith mather still remembers that sound half a century later. in 1968 the stockade at san francisco's pe sid yoe was his home. >> you were in here. they didn't come get you. >> mather had joined the growing ranks of american soldiers protesting the vietnam war and historians say the military was taking notice. >> 1968, there's about one soldier every three minutes

going awol. >> many taken into custody in california were crowded into the presidio stockade overlooking the golden gate bridge. as conditions deteriorating yafrted, clashes with guards occurred. that would trigger the presidio mutiny. >> the reason it came about is because richard bunch was shot and killed. he was one of us. >> he says the 19-year-old soldier was having mental health issues and one day as he was running away from a guard, bunch was shot in the back. by the next day, thousands of protesters swarmed the gates. more than two dozen stockade prisoners including mather decided to stage a demonstration, a protest that earned them the name the presidio 27. that morning they broke ranks and refused to fall out for a work detail. instead, they sat in a circle on the grass and read out a list of demands, including an investigation into bunch's

bay. we're warmer. getting a wind shift for an offshore kpoen ecomponent. elsew it's cooler in the city. concord and livermore. the numbers look like this. 47 in san ramon is cool as well as the 48 livermore. 54 in san jose. 50 up through santa rosa and novato. yesterday we had mid to low 40s here. bit of a wind shift and warmup. we're still looking at the cool numbers throughout the next several hours. with high pressure building in, we're going to warm up quickly. we've got a red flag warning in effect through 12:00 mm tomorrow. elevated fire danger from the north bay, east bay and parts of santa clara county. the winds will be blowing and get stronger throughout the day. as we go up in height about 1,000 feets, they're gust to go 25 miles per hour. straight out of of the north. not too gusty above half moon bay but the oakland hills, about 10 miles an hour. here's a look a the fog

footprint. it stays around marin and sonoma. then it pulls back. we totally don't get rid of it. we'll be comfortable. 60s along the coast. san francisco will be a warmer day today. here's a check of the moisture in the air. about 96% relative humidity san francisco. napa has 83%. we factor in the winds and the warmer temperatures and by 3:00 this afternoon, the moisture that is in the air is just about gone with 11% in napa and the recovery is what we should get overnight as the temperatures cool. but the winds will be blowing really strong so 5:00 tomorrow morning, we're still at very critical levels. you combine the relative humidity, the winds and the warmer temperatures, we've got the weather watch and the red flag warnings. throughout the day, the winds continue to gust from 25 miles an hour about in cloverdale to 2:00 in the afternoon. all the way through the east bay. they get stronger.

they continue out of the northeast by 9:00 tonight. by midnight, 1:00, 30 to 40 mile an hour wind gusts. still breezy to windy. tomorrow afternoon, we should allow for the red flag warning to expire. 80 in san jose. peninsula, upper 70s. nice day in the city. 72. warmer than yesterday. breezy, though. north bay, 82 santa rosa, as well as vallejo. you head inland, 83 in pittsburgh today. 84 in san ramon. the accuweather seven-day forecast. windy in the hills and breezy tomorrow. but not as warm with -- i should say not as breezy. mid-80s today and tomorrow inland. around 80 around the bay. the coast will be mild with the offshore winds still really heavy and on shore component. the closer you get to the ocean. otherwise we cool off slightly. not much the rest of the week. >> if we could just get rid of

we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. matt, good morning to you. we're looking at a good deal of fog. winds are shifting in the upper elevations. so that's why we have a red flag warning in effect right now. right on through midday tomorrow. so the highlighted area in red from the north and east bay hills and parts of santa clara county will be experiencing the gusty winds from 20 to 35 miles an hour to start out throughout the day. then tonight, they will gust up to 60 miles an hour possibly out of the north and east. so remember last weekend, we had that grassfire and quickly that grew. we're concerned about the possibility of fire starts and the fires perhaps growing. the wind will be highlighted here from guerneville to middletown. st. helena, fairfield and napa.

exercise caution if you're out and about today. the winds continue to increase. knoxville creek up to -- mt. tam, 17 mile an hour gusts out of the north. the east bay, not as bad. we're looking at the cool numbers right now. 40s and 50s. by the afternoon, the fog stays at the coast and will be in the 60s, 70s and low to mid 80s inland. matt? thanks, lisa. president trump welcomed the american pastor recently released from turkey to the white house. meantime, president trump answered questions about the investigation into the disappearance of a washington potatoes report post reporter in turkey. here's linda lopez with the details. >> jamal khashoggi was last seen entering the consulate in october. turkish officials say they have audio and video proof that khashoggi was killed inside the consulate. the post quoting a source, saying you can hear his voice and the voices of men speaking in arabic.

llc. the owner told the capital press newspaper he's working with investigators but it's a charade. in the east bay, the chp's eye in the sky caught a suspected peeping tom. these pictures come from a police helicopter just happened to be flying over walnut creek on friday night. it responded to the call in concord of a man reportedly looking into windows and spotted the suspect immediately. concord police moved in and arrested him. a kidnapping survivor helped bay area families know where resources are available to keep their kids safe. yesterday, the mitzi sanchez foundation for child safety hosted an event. she was abducted by a child serial killer. >> i love to share my story and be vulnerable and let everybody know what i went through. i do that because i want families and kids to know that they have to be aware of their

good morning. here's a live look from the golden gate bridge this morning. there's some fog along the coast. but it looks like it's going to heat up. especially in the east bay and in there is a red flag warning in effect through noon tomorrow. a street festival in san francisco had something for everyone. yesterday's ocean beach music and art festival dpee toured dj's live music, beer gardens.

but wait, there's more. also included with the event, children's activities. plus in the spirit of the season, a pumpkin patch. if kids weren't digging the pumpkin patch, they could draw. people had an opportunity to travel back in time today. yesterday they were at jack london square for tours of the tall ship lady washington. through today, visitors can experience maritime history by taking a tour for a small donation to a floating the first american merchant ship to trade in honolulu, hong kong and japan. we know that winds will be an issue today. i know that pg&e warned people that the possibility that they may shut off power to some areas. >> yes, that's right. the winds later on tonight will be at their strongest, 50, 60 mile an looks pretty calm for mt. tam.

napa. we're cooler in concord and livermore. emeryville this morning, oakland will warm into the 70s today. right now, a lot of 50s out there. 55 in san francisco. san jose and half moon bay. 51 in morgan hill. right outside the window, gray skies. 52 santa rosa and napa with low 50s in vacaville and concord. we're looking at the breezy winds at about 1,000 feet. we also have the low clouds giving us about a mile visibility. the relative humidity is up. that's good. the wind shifts, the temperatures go up and we draw things up. pretty view from mt. tam. cool with fog this morning. red flag warning through noon tomorrow and the elevated fire danger. so we're looking at the winds and the relativnd that combination makes for the critical fire weather today through tonight and when the winds will be at their gustiest. at the higher elevations, we're beginning to see that north to

northeasterly shift. 27 miles an hour in knoxville. looking at -- mt. tamalpais at 17 miles an hour. the east bay not as windy yet. the fog, it pulls back throughout the morning hours and we'll see that sun. but then also coming back just a little bit throughout the day. that on shore component if you're at the beach. otherwise, the dry atmosphere. so right now the relative humidity, the moisture in the air is up from san ramon to livermore. as we add in the winds and the warmer temperatures, it drops to the critical levels from 11% by the delta. little better around the bay. we'll keep going when we get the windiest conditions late tonight into early tomorrow. it gets even drier. it's still windy out there. this is why we're so concerned without any rain really yet this season and the winds blowing. we're looking at some critical weather today and tomorrow. 20 to 25 mile an hour wind gusts

and amenities. bay area father and son traveled 3,000 miles from home to find out they didn't have a hotel at all. 7 on your side michael finney has the story. it was the trip of a lifetime for loren johnson and his 12-year-old son ryan. >> i'd never been to new york before. >> father and son visited thees memorial. go the yankees game. a mets game. >> all before going upstate to the baseball hall of fame in cooperstown. and then the main reason for the trip. ryan and his team played in the annual kids tournament in cooperstown. >> they're the callie dirt bags. >> it had been fun and games until they pulled up to their hotel. >> where am i? >> am i in the right place? >> he booked a room at the holiday inn express. when they arrived, the holiday inn wasn't therement. >> this is the right address. but it's a quality inn. >> the holiday inn was now a quality inn. and he didn't have a room there. >> i had a reservation.

they say well we don't have you in the system. >> loren had paid for a week's stay at the holiday inn that wasn't there. holiday inn had sent this confirmation notice to him the day before. >> i need someplace to stay. we're here. >> quality inn said he could book a room twice what he had already paid holiday inn. >> it did bring a damper to the whole trip. >> back home, loren contacted both hotels. neither provided a refund. >> i was getting nowhere. that's when i contacted 7 on your side. >> we reached out to both hotels. quality in parent company choice hotel said it's typically the responsibility of the previous hotel brand to contact guests and reaccommodate or cancel reservations. >> holiday inn said every effort is made to contact yes with existing reservation toss notify them of the change. >> we are very sorry that we were not able to reach mr. johnson in advance of a stay. both companies provided loren with a full refund.
