has more on those power outages. cornel? >> reporter: pg and e telling us tonight that it will start proactively shutting down power to thousands of customers across the bay area in the next four to five hours. all of those customers are in the north bay region. this substation in petaluma supplies a lot of power to the area. the company says this move that has never been done before by the company is all in the name of safety. >> these are portions of cities and towns that are deemed extreme fire risk. this is to mitigate wildfire risk, keep our customers safe. >> reporter: customers in sonoma, napa counties are getting -- >> gallons of water. first aid kit.

>> reporter: pat abercrombie is ready with a go bag. he's even got a red flag flying outside of his home to warn his neighbors fire danger is real. >> we have got a lot of fuel down here on the ground on fitch mountain because we haven't had a real fire for 75 years. >> it's necessary, and it's something that's been a long time waiting. >> reporter: sonoma county supervise says it will cause some problems, but will avoid more problems. >> cal fire had determined a cause for last year's tubs fire, but a recent cal fire report blamed pg & e equipment. pat abercrombie hopes his neighbors on fitch mountain don't lose power. >> power pretty much isolates us. so i'm just hoping that if power

is taken down, that it's done judiciously. >> reporter: now pg&e says thousands of customers across the bay will be impacted. i just got the numbers, about 400 in sonoma county, 5,700 in napa county and up in lake county, about 11,000 people impacted. now here's the bad news. pg and e says it could take up to 24 hours or longer to get the power back on because it says utility crews have to physically inspect the lines to make sure they're safe before they can be reenergized. let's get to mools mools mos drew tuma who's been watching our weather. >> the winds have been active in the past couple of hours, you can see the wind gusts in diablo.

40 people remain unaccounted for. so far only one person has been found dead in mexico beach. today governor rick scott says that lack of cell service is making tracking down people harder. >> one county, at&t is down and in the next county, verizon is down, so we have about 2,000 people working on that. >> president trump will be traveling to florida tomorrow to see the destruction firsthand. a sheriff's patrol vehicle crashed into a house and caused a fire. the deputy crashed about 4:00 in the morning. it all began as a search for theft suspects. when the deputies spotted the car believed to be in the chp is investigating the cause of the crash. 25 people were taken to the hospital after a bus crash along a busy los angeles freeway this

afternoon. take a look at the charter bus just crashed through that center divider on i-45 in the san fernando valley into oncoming southbound traffic. that bus collided with several vehicles on the freeway there. fire officials say that several people were evaluated and five sffered serious injuries. electric scooters will reappear on san francisco streets starting tomorrow. two companies skip and scoot will roll out hundreds of scooters into select neighborhoods into the southern part of the neighborhood on sunday night. that defies the judge's temporary restraining order protesting the fact that they were not permitted by the city to provide schoolers. the eta has limited the skootders to 1,350. speaking of transportation, good news for commuters ahead of the workweek tomorrow.

the south airport boulevard bridge is reopening ahead of schedule. the bridge over the channel near southwest boulevard and north access roads has been closed since may to finish parts of its foundation. crews put the finishing touches on that bridge today. redwood conservation activists and enthusiasts celebrated a big birthday today. abc7 news was in san francisco yerba buena gardens. the organization's president said red woods are a key tool in the fight against climate change and part of state history. >> the redwood trees are what make california so special. they're a unique species and has helped define california as a

monitoring our winds very closely, we do expect them to grow stronger later on tonight, increasing our fire danger as we head into monday morning. so we'll show you up above, we are as clear as can be. a lot of sunshine as that sun is setting this evening. temperature wise, it is comfortable out there, it is a mixed bag of 60s and 70s right now. it's about 66 in oakland. right now san jose checking in at 71 degrees. but the big story at the next 24 hours, will be our winds, at the surface, you will see fairfield gusting at 26 miles an hour. but as we go up in elevation, about 1,000 feet into our hills, you can see the winds are stronger, at mt. diablo, 36 miles an hour. so we do expect these winds to strengthen in the coming hours. so future tracker wind gusts w

will stop the clock at 11 later on tonight, and you can see especially in the north bay, those winds are very active, we do expect gusts well over 40 miles an hour at times, and that threat for those wind, dry conditions for your monday. those winds will be racing out of the northeast, again, gusting over 40 miles an hour. as we head into the later morning hours, we do expect those winds to back off. by 10:00, or 11:00 in the morning, those winds are relaxing, generally less than 20 miles an hour. and tomorrow afternoon, it will calm down, those rains and winds will affect the entire region. but overnight, that's when our highest fire danger does exist. that threat will be in our mills at about 1,000 feet. our key times for the strongest winds will be 9:00 tonight lasting through 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. so that's about a nine-hour

window where those winds will be very active. in the north bay especially, it's not out of the question that we could see winds in the north bay close to 70 miles an hour and those winds will drag down very dry air, so humidity levels will drop between 10 and 20%. so we'll find our highest winds in the north bay, we'll have that wind advisory in effect for those winds racing out of the northeast, but at the north bay hills and the east bay hills where we find our highest fire danger across that region. so that fire danger warning through wednesday afternoon where a fire could easily start with those windy and dryer conditions. the winds in our north bay, 40s to 50s, a windy morning on monday, the winds relax midday. so the afternoon, it's calm, but is a warm day, 70s to 80s across the board. windy tomorrow morning in our hills. the winds get out of here monday afternoon. it's just a light breeze for the rest of the extended forecast
