this morning on "world news now" the headline from the storm zone. dozens of people are still unaccounted for. >> conditions are getting worse. people running out of food and water. and without cell service or electricity it's difficult to connect people with supplies arriving. also the new interview with president trump opening up about whether he thinks climate change is a hoax. plus, he explains that speech in which he appeared to mock brett kavanaugh's accuser. it's the video that is tough to watch. a boy with special needs dragged down hallways and up the stairs by a teacher and a nurse. what the adults are now facing. we have video evidence showing what kendis gibson was doing this weekend and why he's not here right now. he hopped on the longest flight in the world. more than 17 hours in the air.

now at 18, but dozens of people are still missing. hundreds of thousands of customers are without power and are not likely to have it restored for at least another week. >>he director of fema say this damage is the worst he's seen and president trump plans to visit affected areas in florida and georgia today. abc's rob marciano has more. >> reporter: parts of the florida panhandle being likened to a war zone days after hurricane michael carved a path of destruction across the region. the search for the dozens of unaccounted for continues. one family learning the fate of their relatives when looking online through an interactive help finding this, the word help spelled out in timber. >> i contacted emergency services and they went out there to do a welfare check. >> reporter: finding frustrated residents is as easy as finding destruction. >> i can't hardly eat or sleep. >> reporter: this man rode out the storm inside his home.

now struggling to clean up and salvage what he can. refusing to leave at night. where were you hanging out inside the house? >> mostly the front porch. >> reporter: michael left thousands homeless. this line of cars outside a fema distribution point where soldiers are giving out cases of water and other supplies. >> people have been smiling. some people have been crying that they're getting some help. >> reporter: with much of the aid delivered from places like these local churches. the problem is basic communication. text alerts letting people know where they can find food and water but many are without cell service or power to charge their phones. in mexico beach where michael's winds were most ferocious, some homeowners were returning to survey the damage and salvage what they can. as search and rescue teams look for signs of life, our will carr is there. >> with dozens unaccounted for there is an urgent search going on. crews pushed into this marshland looking at cars and boats and when they clear them they smack the green stickers on them. >> reporter: officials hopeful that number of missing will go

down as they find out where people have gone and are able to get in contact with loved ones. fema's director touring the devastation. 19,000 people registering for federal assistance. fema telling residents to only return when they're told it's safe and to expect extended power outages. still hundreds of thousands without power. but gulf power now promising to have 95% of their customers back online in less than ten days. the issue is a lot of homeowners will have to make repairs to their homes in order to accept that power when the lines get back up. rob marciano, abc news, callaway, florida. >> all right, our thanks to rob. as president trump prepares to head to the storm zone he's casting doubt on science linking the uptick in powerful hurricanes to climate change. in a wide-ranging interview with "60 minutes" the president claimed he's not denying climate change, but he said the scientists have a big political agenda. >> i think something is happening, something is changing

and it'll change back again. i don't think it's a hoax. i think there's probably a difference but i don't know that it's manmade. >> the president defended his warm approach to kim jong-un saying he trusts the north korean leader. he said he knows more about nato than defense secretary james mattis and remember that campaign rally where the president mocked brett kavanaugh's accuser, christine blasey ford. well, trump says that speech is the reason kavanaugh was confirmed to the supreme court. president trump's job approval rating has climbed to its second highest since taking office. and the democrats are holding a double digit lead over republicans with the midterm elections three weeks away. tara palmeri takes a look at the numbers. >> reporter: boosted by strong ratings, the president has a 41% approval rating. up from 36% in late august according to a new abc news/"washington post" poll but still 54% disapprove. a potential problem for republican candidates. democratic candidates for the house lead republicans by 11 points among the registered voters.

53% to 42%. >> i think the house will be difficult for the republicans to maintain but i think given the last ten days the president's had now not impossible. >> reporter: that advantage by the democrats reflects a wide gender gap. women support democratic candidates by 59% to 37% with men split about evenly, 46% to 48%. women are also expressing a sense of urgency. >> 70% of women in our poll said this midterm election is more important than any other so far. that's not good for republicans. >> reporter: the number of americans who say they want democrats to control congress as a check on the president slipped to 54%. down from 60% in august but they are still a majority. >> democrats are feeling this resistance by focusing kitchen table issues like health care. i have to say this. young people, they're showing an interest. >> reporter: saturday night the president making his case. >> you can either vote for democrat mob rule or you can vote for a republican party that

stands proudly for law and order, fairness, freedom and justice. >> reporter: this latest poll also shows voters are more engaged than ever with 76% saying they are certain to vote. higher than normal for a midterm election year. tara palmeri, abc news, washington. some major developments in the case of missing journalist jamal khashoggi. he has not been seen since entering the saudi consulate in istanbul nearly two weeks ago and turkish officials have said they have proof he was killed in that building. now saudi arabia's king has called the president of turkey, they are considering establishing a group to work on the case. that call came hours after saudi arabia's threatened retaliation for any sanctions imposed on it because of the khashoggi case. president trump told "60 minutes" last night that there would be severe punishment of saudi arabia if it is responsible for khashoggi's disappearance and suspected murder.

two people in chesapeake, virginia are in critical condition after a house explosion. it caused what officials are calling devastating damage to the house. seven other people were also injured including two firefighters. crews from the local gas utility are helping investigate the cause of that explosion. three northern california counties are in darkness overnight on purpose. pacific gas and electric plans to shut off service to 17,000 customers in the bay area to prevent the spread of potential wildfires. another 70,000 in the sierra foothills region are part of the planned outages. the goal is to restore power monday night. pope francis has named two new saints, first was pope paul vi who was pope from 1963 to 1978. francis credited him with turning the church's attention to the plight of the poor. also named was an archbishop from el salvador. oscar romero was killed while celebrating mass in 1980.

he angered el salvador's leaders by demanding an end to military repression. some breaking news this morning, sears has filed for bankruptcy. the legendary retailer has closed hundreds of stores and struggled with big losses for years. as part of its filing sears is expected to close at least 150 stores immediately and that's according to "the wall street journal." the paper also says lenders have agreed to provide up to $600 million in financing which will allow sears to keep operating while it restructures. all right, wine connoisseurs, a bottle of wine has smashed the sales record, 1945 bottle of -- is that romani. >> romani conti burgundy and sold for 17 times the estimate. $558,000. sotheby's sold another bottle of the rare vintage in the same auction for just short of a half million dollars. both sold for more than twice the previous record.

take a look at this. one of the busiest highways was shut down by a series of crashes. they began when a charter bus collided with a car on the 405. the bus plowed through the center median and hit oncoming vehicles, dozens of people vehicles, dozens of people injured. > llrenecident inside sml groce

store has led to charges of racism. this surveillance video shows the woman at the counter, you see her there leaning over, being grazed by the backpack of a 9-year-old boy as he's walking out with his mom. >> that led theresa klein to call police claiming she had been sexually assaulted by the child. police never arrived on the scene leading to speculation that the 911 call was never placed. klein has since watched the recording and apologized. she says the boy's mother threatened her so she still may pursue charges. in kentucky there is growing outrage over the alleged abuse of an autistic boy caught on video. >> it shows a teacher and nurse dragging the boy through school hallways and up a stairwell. here's the latest now from abc's janai norman. >> reporter: a kentucky mom wants answers about this surveillance video capturing her 11-year-old son thatcher seen here sitting on the floor of his

school, his service dog beside him before being dragged through the halls by a teacher and school nurse. at one point the pair even dragging him up a flight of stairs. thatcher's dog forced to follow along. thatcher who has nonverbal autism visibly uncomfortable. >> he's clearly screaming. he doesn't want them to do this. >> reporter: jo grayson says the teacher texted her saying teacher texted her saying thatcher refused to stand so they picked him up. at home she noticed bumps and bruises on her son's body and turned to the school for questions. it prompted investigations by school officials and state authorities. >> he'll remember this for the rest of his life. autism or no autism, any kid would remember that. >> reporter: in a statement to abc news, the district said incidents of this nature are isolated and there is absolutely no tolerance for the conduct of the employee in this incident. adding that the teacher involved in this instance is no longer employed by the fayette county public schools. grayson says they should have better training to handle this. grayson says it has been a setback for thatcher and the

on climate change the president questioned the motive of scientists sounding the alarm and suggested that the climate will change back. he did not deny the existence of climate change but said responding to it could put the u.s. at a disadvantage and cost millions of jobs. tension is rising between longtime allies because of the disappearance and suspected murder of "washington post" writer jamal khashoggi. he hasn't been seen in nearly two weeks since entering the saudi consulate in istanbul. now saudi arabia's king and turkey's president have spoken about the case and may put together a group to work on it. janai norman has more. >> reporter: saudi arabia denying any role in the disappearance of jamal khashoggi and promising to push back against any severe punishment targeting its government. it's a veiled response to president trump's threat made in a "60 minutes" interview. >> we're going to get to it. >> reporter: he was last seen walking into the saudi consulate in istanbul on october 2nd.

mind as the week progresses. >> reporter: but senator marco rubio told jake tapper it's a poor choice. >> i don't think we should continue with business as usual. >> reporter: janai norman, abc news, washington. the death toll from hurricane michael stands at 18. but that number is sure to rise. many of those who survived in the florida panhandle don't have food, water, electricity and other necessities. a family in a rural area about 20 miles from where michael made landfall used logs to spell out help. a relative spotted it and they were rescued. the president and first lady will visit the storm zone today to see the destruction firsthand. the fema chief says it's the worst he's seen. rob marciano is there. >> reporter: everything has to come in from the outside and we're certainly seeing a lot of that over the weekend. fema started to ramp up supplies. a huge influx of supplies from aid groups and church groups and

other volunteer groups bringing in food, bringing in water, bringing in clothes, diapers and that sort of thing. >> hundreds of thousands of people in five states are without power and many are unlikely to have electricity before next week. the president is considering revamping the controversial policy of separating migrant families at the mexico border. it comes as the administration released new video of a texas detention center housing 2400 unaccompanied minors. here is tara palmeri. >> reporter: just weeks ahead of the midterms president trump putting a spotlight on immigration. this amid a report his administration is considering a new take on family separation at the border. >> we have the dumbest immigration laws in the world. the world laughs at us but we're getting them changed. >> reporter: while the president says family separation could deter illegal immigration -- >> if they feel there will be separation, they don't come. you know, if they feel there's separation it's a terrible

situation. >> reporter: he cited no evidence and gave no proof they're bringing children into the country to bypass immigration laws. >> everybody wants to come in and they come in illegally and they use children. in many cases, the children aren't theirs. they grab them. >> reporter: the president is considering a plan that gives parents who cross the border illegally two choices, stay in detention for months or years with their children as they await immigration proceedings or allow children to wait in government facilities until relatives are located. >> and i said to him that i feel that's unacceptable and he felt the same. >> reporter: the crackdown on illegal immigration ended in june because of legal setbacks but many children remain in detention. u.s. officials say more than 200 are not eligible for reunification or release. the department of health and human services out with a new video from a texas detention center where 2400 children are
