the day in florida seeing that devastation from hurricane michael firsthand. it's one of the strongest storms to ever hit the u.s. the number of dead continues to rise and thousands more now homeless after hurricane michael. >> we have already took a tremendous hit. this is some of the worst damage i have seen in my career. >> reporter: fema director brock long touring the damage sunday with florida governor rick scott. >> we're seeing the power get on. we have about 17,000 utility workers working on power around the state. >> reporter: it could take weeks for those crews to fully restore power. abc's rob marciano has been in the florida panhandle since michael made landfall. >> what is most striking about this hurricane damage is not just the thousands of homes that are damaged, but these retail storefronts that are completely blown out. hundreds of commercial spaces damaged or completely destroyed. >> reporter: and right now, search and rescue missions continue for the 46 people still unaccounted for. >> it's been very traumatic.

i just -- i can't hardly eat, and i can't hardly sleep. >> reporter: one family thinking their relatives evacuated before the storm finding a surprise when looking online at an interactive map and spotting this, the word, help, spelled out in logs. >> i contacted emergency services and they went out there to do a welfare check. >> reporter: rescue crews responding, finding all three people in the home safe and sound. and tyndall air force base taking a major hit. the aftermath resembling a war zone with many of the buildings a total loss. the base home to dozens of f-22 raptors, each with a price tag of $300 million. and on sunday, president trump signed another emergency declaration, this one approving more federal aid money for the state of georgia and again, the president and first lady will leave the white house to tour that damage in florida around 9:00 eastern time. kenneth and stephanie? >> we'll have complete coverage. thank you, emily. president trump is defending

his controversial policy that led to the separation of thousands of migrant children from their families. on "60 minutes," the president blamed the policy on the obama administration, but would not rule out bringing the policy back. he said he wants new laws and warned of the consequences of crossing the border illegally. >> when you allow the parents to stay together, okay? when you allow that, then what happens is people are going to pour into our country. >> are you going to go back to that? >> we're looking at a lot of things. really what we want to do is change the immigration laws because they are a laughing stock all over the world. >> are you willing though -- i think that you are saying it's under consideration. >> i want all the laws changed. >> can i just ask this simple question? yes or no? >> go ahead. >> are you willing to reinstitute that policy? you said we're looking at everything. yes or no? >> you can't say yes or no. what i can say is this. there are consequences from coming into a country, namely

our country, illegally. >> "the washington post" is reporting the white house is considering a plan that would give migrant parents a choice. stay in the detention center with their children or have the kids wait in government facilities until relatives are located. with you turn to the disappearance of "the washington post" columnist jamal khashoggi. saudi arabia's king is trying to ease tensions with turkey after reports that khashoggi was killed by a saudi hit squad in turkey earlier this month. this comes as president trump threatens to punish the saudis if they were involved in his death. >> reporter: as the u.s. and saudi arabia clash over the case of "washington post" columnist, jamal khashoggi, the president -- the saudi king thank government officials for their help in the joint investigation. the journalist who lives in the

u.s. was last seen walking into the saudi consulate in istanbul on october 2nd. turkish officials say they have audio and video proof that khashoggi was killed inside the compound. saudi arabia is promising to push back against any severe punishment that targets its government. it's a veiled response to president trump's threat made in a "60 minutes" interview. >> we're going to get to the bottom of it, and there will be severe punishment. >> reporter: saudi arabia's denied any involvement in the disappearance of khashoggi, a well-known critic of the regime. >> there is a lot at stake and maybe especially so because this man was a reporter. this is something -- you'll be surprised to hear me say that. there is something really terrible and disgusting about that if that were the case. >> reporter: but the president insists even if the saudi involvement is confirmed, he will not cancel a lucrative arms deal with the saudis. >> all these -- i don't want to hurt jobs. i don't want to lose an order like that. there are other ways of -- >> punishing? >> punishing. >> reporter: global business leaders are reassessing their ties with saudi arabia.

many sponsors and attendees have pulled out of an upcoming economic conference of saudi arabia. but not treasury secretary steve mnuchin. >> mr. mnuchin will make up his mind as the week progresses and as new information surfaces. >> reporter: senator marco rubio told cnn that's a poor choice. >> i don't think we should continue business as usual. >> several arab countries are now coming to saudi arabia's side. egypt, jordan and lebanon have all expressed solidarity with the saudis. a landmark affirmative action case goes to court today. pitting harvard university against asian-american students who claim the school discriminates against them. fewer than 1 in 20 applicants is admitted to harvard. the school's admissions policy is a closely guarded secret, but a student's race is believed to be part of the formula. >> whether or not you support affirmative action, i think it's an important time to be critical of harvard and to look at how affirmative action policies have impacted or discriminated against asian-american communities, keeping asian-american numbers down, by consistently scoring us lower on personal ratings.

>> people on both sides of the issue expect the case to end up before the supreme court. power officials in california may cut service today in more than a dozen counties to prevent wildfires. the emergency plan is designed to stop fires from being sparked by downed power lines and heavy winds. los angeles and three other counties in the south could be affected. service was cut overnight to six counties there in the north. it's time now for a look at your weather for this monday morning. surveillance video from hollywood shows a tree crushing this car after a storm this weekend. the driver had just gotten out, but more winds today are fueling concerns about wildfires. meanwhile, heavy snow caused major power outages around omaha, nebraska. several accident the roads, bmajor injuries. and looking temperatures across the country, much of the nation's midsection

wildlife officials were called in to safely remove it. they say someone nearby was likely keeping the python as a pet. hillary clinton is defending her husband's decision not to resign over the monica lewinsky scandal. asked whether president clinton should have stepped down after being impeached for lying about the affair, she told cbs absolutely not, and she denied the affair was an abuse of power. >> there are people who look at the incidents of the '90s and they say, a president of the united states cannot have a consensual relationship with an intern. the power imbalance is too big. >> she was an adult, but let me ask you this. where is the investigation of the current incumbent against whom numerous allegations have been made, in which he dismisses, denies and ridicules? >> clinton also denied playing any role in criticizing the character of lewinsky or her husband's other accusers. an investigation by "the boston globe" reveals new

details about the troubled past of former nfl star, aaron hernandez. the late patriots tight end took his own life in prison last year while serving a life sentence for murder. "the globe" reports that growing up hernandez was beaten and brutalized by his father and had a sexual relationship with his high school quarterback which they hid from everyone else. in business news, as expected, sears has now filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. as a result, it's expected to immediately close 150 of its remaining 700 sears and kmart stores. the company was facing a deadline to pay back millions of dollars in loans. "the wall street journal" reports lenders will provide up to $600 million to keep the company afloat while it restructures. now if you want a fast food extra fast, get in line at burger king. it has the fastest drive-through service according to a study by "qsr" magazine. dunkin donuts was next, followed by kfc, wendy's and taco bell.

we have got some breaking news from the royal family this morning. there is word that duchess meghan markle is pregnant. she is likely to be about 12 weeks pregnant. >> yes. hear ye. hear ye. get the royal trumpets ready because this is the video right here of the couple in australia this weekend. the baby news came from kensington palace just moments ago so it is official. this will be the first grandchild for meghan's mother, and the queen, she has got a few of them already. >> very exciting for them. >> yes. well, we turn now to a murder mystery in georgia. an aspiring young model was shot while driving to work. >> police are now analyzing surveillance video for possible clues. abc's steve osunsami has the latest. >> just have so many unanswered questions. >> reporter: a murder mystery in georgia. kelsey quayle had moved from california to atlanta to pursue a modeling career, and this morning, her family wants someone to explain how and why she was killed. >> i just want to know who did this.

it's ridiculous. she didn't deserve this. >> reporter: the 28-year-old was killed after she was shot in the neck last monday while driving south of atlanta. police believe the gunshot wound caused her to crash her car. no one even knew she had been shot until she got to the hospital. surveillance video from a gas station near the crash shows several angles, but does not show the shooting. just moments before police say quayle's mazda came to a stop, you see her steering into oncoming traffic before crashing into two other cars. >> we have so many unanswered questions. >> reporter: investigators are now looking to speak with other drivers on the road that night to learn what they might have seen before the wreck. >> it seems to us to be random at this time. we have not been advised of any information or reference to anybody shooting in the area. a wildlife official is facing calls to resign after sharing pictures of his recent hunting trip. idaho fish and game commissioner blake fischer e-mailed pictures to more than 100 friends and colleagues. he and his wife are seen posing

with at least 14 animals they say they killed in africa. a photo of fischer holding up a family of baboons is causing the most controversy. even pro fishing and hunting groups say his pictures send the wrong signal. >> he should have been fired immediately. the governor should have canned him. this is doing a lot of damage for hunting. >> fischer has apologized for sending the photos but not for hunting. he says he did nothing illegal. the american league championship series is now even at one game apiece. jackie bradley jr. hit a bases-clearing double which helped the red sox put away the astros last night. the final score was 7-5. the series now heads to housto game three is tomorrow night. and just down the road from fenway park, tom brady used his legs and his arm to lift the patriots. he ran for one touchdown and re night shootout, 43-40. >> kansas city shutout.
