next traffic update 6:10. now we want to get you updated on the situation in the north bay. pg&e has turned off power to thousands because of the fire danger. >> amanda, we just heard mike said the winds subsided. any update on how long the power outages will last? >> reporter: well, they tell me that they're going to actually have to monitor, keep monitoring localized weather patterns. so that's something that we'll have to keep in touch with pg&e about. we have an update on those numbers. 17,000 people pg&e customers in the north bay and 42,000 in the sierra foothills are without power because of this proactive action. this is all part of the proactive approach to preventing fires in tier 3 areas, areas with high fire risk. i connected with matt nowman, a spokesperson with the company.

he said customers were notified about the possibility of power being shut off months ago, an action based on localized weather forecasts. employees will continue to monitor ahead of restoration. there is still plenty of work to be done in the meantime. >> we have to physically look at the lines to make sure they're fine. if they are fine, we can start the restoration process. obviously if we see something, we may have to do some repairs. but we won't know until we inspect the lines. >> reporter: nowman says the restoration project shouldn't take nearly as long as that inspection you just heard about. again, almost 60,000 customers, combined with the north bay and sierra foothills, are continuing without power. live in san francisco, man da del castillo, abc 7 news. >> amman tkarbgs thank you for thesist h beenanced butedlainiln remnsfe for ff areas. in some so fast areas it's not

during the light night and early morning hours. caltrans will be replacing joint seals on the upper and lower decks of the bridge. work will begin on the upper deck tonight at 9:00 until 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. the overnight repair work will fluctuate between the upper and the lower decks depending on the day. up to four of five could be closed for the work. go to abc7news.com for closure information. on the peninsula, people are looking for whoever shot four people in palo alto. it happened early yesterday morning on pulgas avenue. two victims died at the scene. the other two have life-threatening injuries. it appeared it started with a dispute at a halloween party. people called 911 about the shooting but they received an alert about it.

just one vehicle involved. emergency crews on the way to the scene. mass transit has been looking great all morning. 55 bart trains with no delays. ace 1, 3, 5 no issues. normal service, no delays for vta as well. developing news in san francisco that will make commuters happy. the stretch of fremont that runs under the salesforce transit center is partially open. it was closed three weeks ago after workers discovered cracks in two of the support beams. this is video of some of the first cars to use those lanes last night. i'm hearing a lot of honking and celebrating there. the middle lane is being used to hold equipment to shore up the beams. the transit center itself still closed. but at least people can get through. precautionary power outages. 11,309 in lake county.

tried to save the $10,000 worth of food they have. they are hoping the ice will keep it cool for 8 to 10 hours. he said he would have liked to have a little more notice. >> anything you could have done to protect your inventory? >> no. i mean, not on that short of notice. there's nothing we can do. we have to just cross our fingers. everything is iced down. we've got, you know, a generator is definitely in the works at this point. i think everyone needs to have a generator. if this is the protocol, wonderful. now we know what's going to happen. >> reporter: pg and is e also shut the power off to communities in the sierras. a total of 59,000 customers are in the dark right now. it's not windy down here in calistoga down here in the downtown. but pg&e says they won't be turning the powerback on until at least daylight. they want crews to go inspect

turkish officials say they have audio and video evidence that khashoggi was killed inside the saudi consulate in istanbul. president trump is threatening if the saudi government was involved. president trump is heading to florida today. he will get a firsthand look at areas destroyed by hurricane michael. it is blamed for 18 deaths in four states. one found this surprise when looking an interactive map online. it shows the word "help" spelled out in logs. rescue crews responded and found all three people alive in the home. one of the easiest ways to donate is through the american red cross. you can make a $10 donation by texting "michael" to 90999. back at home in the east bay and across the area, we are watching for high winds.
