long lines of lottery dreamers for tonight's mega millions drawing. the jackpot will be at least $970 million. that's the second largest lottery grand prize in u.s. history. if you don't win, tomorrow night the powerball jackpot will also be worth at least $430 million. that's a location there in southern california. turning now to the details we're learning about that dramatic mine shaft rescue we told you about yesterday. this happened in arizona. >> a 62-year-old man who fell ten stories down an old gold mine shaft and stuck there for more than two days. abc's will carr has more. >> reporter: for the first time we're seeing the daring rescue. search and rescue crews in arizona pulling a man to safety from this mine shaft after he went searching for gold. who wound up trapped for more than two days at the bottom of that dark and narrow hole. >> the actions of the folks

standing here with me and many others not present saved a life yesterday in a very challenging circumstance that had incredibly dangerous dynamics. >> reporter: according to authorities, he repelled halfway down the 100-foot shaft, lost control and plunged 50 feet to the bottom, breaking both legs. >> his legs broke all to hell and he's going to have to have somebody to repel down in there. >> reporter: making matters worse, his friend says he landed in a rattlesnake den. >> three of them he said he killed, i guess. >> reporter: he clung to life inside that shaft until his friend terry came to the rescue and called 911. >> he had called me monday and told me he was coming to the mine. we always had a deal, well, if he's not back by tuesday -- >> reporter: shrader would go looking for him. a deal that might have saved his friend's life. he was air lifted to a hospital in phoenix where he underwent surgery. he is now with his family and says he's thankful to be alive

good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm erielle reshef in for diane macedo this morning. here are some of the top headlines we're following for you on "world news now." president trump is warning that saudi arabia will face severe consequences if responsible for the apparent murder of journalist jamal khashoggi. a newly released photo, photos, several of them, show a man with close ties to the saudi crown prince at the alleged crime scene. government scientists are predicting higher than normal temperatures for much of the country this winter. they say el nino is expected to bring warmer weather from the pacific northwest to the rockies, milder temperatures in the northeast. the red sox are back in the world series. yep, there is the catch. boston knocked off houston 4-1 to take the alcs in five games. they will either face the dodgers or the brewers. and today's the day to buy some lottery tickets ahead of a pair of massive drawings.

pompeo is denying a report that he heard a tape and saw a transcript related to the alleged murder. abc's ian pannell has the latest from istanbul, turkey. >> reporter: explosive new developments about the alleged murder of "washington post" writer jamal khashoggi. abc news has been told secretary of state mike pompeo was played an audio recording of the writer's murder during meetings in ankara, according to a turkish source. the officials said secretary pompeo was also given a transcript of the recording. separately, abc news has been told of allegations that khashoggi was killed in the consulate following a struggle that lasted eight minutes and that he died of strangulation. abc news reached out to the white house for comment, which referred questions to the state department. the state department's spokesperson says, quote, secretary pompeo has neither heard a tape nor has he seen a transcript related to jamal khashoggi's disappearance. the president asked, do you believe jamal khashoggi is dead? >> it certainly looks that way to me.

pull out of this conference in saudi arabia nicknamed davos in the desert. he follows a long list of ceos and major corporations who have now said they will not attend because of the controversy over the missing "washington post" writer. ian pannell, abc news, istanbul, turkey. and back in this country, president trump is on the road again trying to drum up support for republicans, hoping to retain control of congress in just a matter of three weeks or so. with polls showing immigration as the number one issue for republicans, the president at a campaign rally in missoula, montana repeating his threat to send in the military and shut down the border if mexico fails to block a caravan of migrants heading to the u.s. from honduras. he also took a swipe at senator elizabeth warren, who recently released results of her dna test to prove she has native american ancestry. >> i can't call her pocahontas anymore. right?with the name

lana, thank you. for the first time, the federal government has opened an investigation into alleged sexual abuse by a catholic clergy. the justice department is demanding secret files from catholic dioceses across pennsylvania. the doj also seeking testimony from high-ranking church officials. the investigation follows a scathing grand jury report that found over 300 so-called predator priests in pennsylvania molested more than 1,000 children since the mid-1940s. the report also said church leaders covered up for the offenders. well, there is more rain on the way to already saturated parts of west and central texas, creating the potential of more deadly flooding. take a look at this drone video of the colorado river near austin, hitting major flood stage there and surging through flood gates to relieve some of the pressure. the problem, that sets up another emergency far downstream. here is abc's victor oquendo in texas. >> reporter: the flood gates are opened on multiple dams across central texas. more than a foot of rain in the

eight-minute struggle believed to have been strangled as well. president trump said if the saudis are responsible and proven responsible, they'll face very severe consequences. and the top u.s. commander in afghanistan is told -- we're told right now is okay after a deadly attack that was claimed by the taliban. they had just ended a meeting about tomorrow's elections in that country when a gunman in an afghan army uniform opened fire. the american general, scott miller, was unharmed but two afghan officials were killed. the attack highlights the unstable security situation across afghanistan, even as voters there get to vote. a search for clues in the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl has come up empty so far, according to place. jayme closs has not been seen since last weekend. her parents were shot and killed in their wisconsin home. police believe closs is in danger. 100 volunteers combed through a 14-mile area, but authorities say they found nothing of value.
