happy heart black shirts with yellow hearts. i'm also selling my book that i made when i was 9 years old. i created it when i was 9 years old to teach kids about the heart in the front and easier ways. the advice that i'd give girls who are starting their company -- never be afraid, never give up, keep on going. >> i want them to take away connections. i want them to take away possibilities and excitement and, "oh, my gosh, i like technology. i like science," you know? "i want to be a filmmaker," you know? "i want to be an entrepreneur." i want them to take away all the possibilities. >> all these people are so creative and so, like, inspiring for me. i think it's great, you know, for, like, people who don't have the same opportunities as others to, like, see what their job is like, what their life's like, so they want to, like, aspire to be like them or to create their own journey. and i think that's really pretty cool. >> i'm so proud of my

we're small, but we are so mighty. and i have a special thanks to all of these 70-plus organizations, nonprofit organizations, who are here today showcasing what they're doing for girls. >> so, gilead -- we have a lot of resource groups just to encourage people to get into the sciences. and at the girls' festival, we're here encouraging girls, especially, you know, when they're starting at their young age, and attracting them towards careers in science. at this booth, we're making cotton candy as a science experiment and just showing how a fun thing like eating cotton candy is also a science peme, d st experimenting, right? how do you figure out what you want to do? you've got to look at some things, and this is just early exposure. >> one of the things i liked today was being able to do the weather. it was really weird because if you point this way, you're gonna be actually pointing that way, and the moving, and then it goes too fast. you don't know what to say. so, you technically have to practice before you go up there.

[ cheers and applause ] >> we are currently near the main stage, which is were the psa video contest and a lot of other main events happen. i know that so many people suffer from mental-health issues, so i passed around a sticky-note pad sometimes on the bus or during lunch. and i asked them to write something that they experienced related to anxiety or depression. i am really, really glad that i won, and i also want to continue helping people. and i want to help people more with dealing with mental-health issues. ♪ >> so, this competition is just for young girls who have an idea and they can present and, like, get some money to fund their products. sol power is a phone case that charges your phone with sunlight and artificial light. >> i run cross-country, and my phone is always dying. and my mom's always getting mad, so i need to find a way, right, to communicate with her. we won the competition, and we won $1,000. >> i'm very happy right now, a little shocked, but i'm really excited.

>> you put your mind to it, you can do anything you want. >> just follow your dreams. >> yeah. >> i got to pitch my nonprofit, team celebrate, and we make birthday boxes for foster kids by using youth volunteers. so, i won the people's choice award. i'm so excited. i'm just so blessed to be able spread foster care awareness and inspire youth across america that if they have an idea they can put their mind towards it and do whatever they want. it's so important because i think girls are sometimes told not to go for their dreams, and now this competition basically says girls can change the world. >> you know, many people who have attended our past couple of festivals have called the day "life-changing." and it truly is, you know? these girls walk away with connections to organizations and services -- and their parents and families, as well -- that they didn't even know existed. and so it's amazing. >> coming up, a home remodel that will inspire. >> yeah, so, what i really wanted to do was incorporate a rustic, cozy feel while still being modern.

♪ ♪ >> hi, everyone. welcome back to the show. i'm on my way to guglielmo winery in morgan hill, and i can't believe how quiet it is in this car. i can't hear anything on the outside. it's like tranquility at the wheel. >> we're back, here in lafayette. last time we were here, this place was a mess. let's go take a look inside. ♪ [ knock on door ] >> hey, guys! >> hey, kimberly. good to see you. >> good to see you, too. >> kimberly, good to see you. >> good to see you, abel. >> so, you're in your in your home. it's all over. the stress is done. little mama is happy, right? >> yeah! >> so, it all starts right here, the entranceway. you can see the color patterns that you've gone with.

it kind of sets the tone. so, i want to talk about this fireplace because you've got a lot going on. and how did you come up with those textiles and those colors to kind of set the tone for the whole house? >> yeah, so, what i really wanted to do was incorporate a rustic, cozy feel while still being modern. and so i did that with finding wood elements for the rustic piece, but the modern brings in the herringbone pattern, the clean, white tile, the extra texture just to really give it some dimension. >> it's kind of cool because you've got a wood and a tile that -- they look like they're the same material... >> mm-hmm. >> ...but completely different. so, not only have you interwoven the colors. you've mapped the textures, and you've got different materials. so, it really brings this room to life. well, let's go take a look at the masterpiece -- the kitchen. >> let's go. all right, guys, the baby's asleep, so we have a little bit of time to chat about the finishes and what we really did here. >> wow. can you believe this is your

kitchen? >> you know, i'm super grateful. i love it. i love the way it turned out. >> that reaction is why we do this. so, let's talk about the first thing we see when we walk in this room. it takes a lot of work to just get this big slab of stone with no seams into the home. now it's here. i think it's the focal point of this whole kitchen. >> it is. it is. it's totally the focal point. it has the grays and the golds, the gold fixtures. the brushed gold ties in and pulls out of the marble. and they say marble -- you either love it or you hate it, right? you're either afraid it's gonna get, you know, a little stain here or a little stain there, or you love it so much you just want to lay on it. >> we talk about the things that we see in all our -- when we do these counter deals and show off our work, we always talk about all the finishing. but i remember when you were standing right there, abel, and electrical wires are hanging out. all this finish work is important, but just as important is what goes on behind the walls. do you remember? you were literally right there, and there was a wire hanging out

there. >> but you see, like, what i'm talking about. nobody sees the hard work behind, but now look -- there's, like, the finish. this is what i'm talking about. >> but it's equally important, isn't it? >> yeah. >> it's american kitchen company, but we did two bathrooms for you, too. >> yep, we sure did, and it looks amazing, too. >> let's go take a look. okay, so, this is the guest bath. tell us what you were thinking. >> what i was thinking is that i knew it was gonna be small. so, we had to keep it light and bright, which we did, doing the white tile all the way up and the white on the floors. but we were able to bring in some color using the gray shaker, which is a gorgeous shade of gray. i love this shade of gray that you guys offer. but it was great that it was able to tie in with some gray in the penny rounds and bring in some style. while still being a really small space, it doesn't feel overly cramped. >> all right, well, let's go take a look at the master. last time we were here, you were on the other side of this wall, and i want to stress again it's all that goes on behind the walls, the engineering, the plumbing. you can see this is a lot higher than normal. it's the custom work.

the husband's 6'5". he goes to hotels, and he's washing like this. we can't have that. we're gonna put this up here. and now let's talk about the design, all these mix and matching of materials. what do you think? >> yeah, well, i really was happy to do a nice feature. i really wanted to do the picture-frame tile, is kind of like what they call this, instead of like just -- >> the marble bullnose? >> yeah, the marble bullnose really gives that transition piece, and it frames off the feature of this. and i went classic with the tile. you can't go wrong with marble white subway tile. i went classic because this is a lot of work to change out. you know, it's in stone, right? it's in grout. so i went classic with my colors and my textures, but i went fun and current trend with all of the fixtures throughout the house. i did the gold. >> this is a lot of money and a lot of time to do this. you don't want to do this again. >> right. >> so, if it is time to remodel 5, 10 years, you know it's all been done right and all you got to do is switch out a little bit of simple labor and not go through this whole thing again. >> exactly. >> now, the shower glass door is going in today.

carriage door that swings out. as far as our carriage house doors are concerned, it's kind of a mockup door. it's a way of getting that same design, that same look, but with a different operation. accoya is a manufactured wood. it's sustainable, so it comes from sustainable sources. basically it is timber that is treated, and they basically modify the structure of the wood in order to give it some longevity and to give it some other properties. accoya tends to be a lot straighter in multiple different environments. okay, so what we're gonna do here is i'm gonna show some of that mortise and tenon and the style of how we put these doors together. jerry, can i have that board? thank you very much. so, you've got your mortise side, and you've got your tenon side, which is on the edge of this board in here, and basically we're gonna slide that in, and normally we would have some glue on here, but the mortise and tenon just allows you to have more surface area to allow that glue to adhere. so, we're gonna slide all of our pieces in, and again, we would

normally have glue here, but for the sake of what we're doing here, we're gonna leave the glue out of it. so, i described mortise and tenon, which was basically the joints that we're creating. the style and rail is going to be these pieces here. so, you got rails here, okay? and you got styles here. so, basically your rails are vertical and your styles are horizontal, and basically what that is, as i said, you have those pieces so you can allow this flush panel portion to be slid in here. anything that's really a door is going to have a style and a rail and a mortise and tenon built, and it's simply to allow that movement to happen, and not bow your door. again, it's another reason why we love the accoya. it's not going to move. it's not going to go away. you get a door that lasts and that is going to continue to look beautiful for years to come. after the drying process is finished, which we allow the doors to cure for 24 hours -- it doesn't need that long, but i just want to reassure that those

joints have fully adhered to themselves. every joint that we do, besides doing the mortise and tenon that we did, we also put in a dowel. so, after the door is totally dry, we'll take that door apart and we'll go ahead and set up our jig, and we drill a hole all the way back in about 8 inches into this wood, so you get a dowel that goes from 5 1/2 inches to here, okay, to another 2 1/2 inches into this other rail here. what that does is, as i said, over time, your door could potentially sag, and one side could fall more than the other, especially if some of the joints end up failing. these dowels just add another extra added security to ensure that you get the longevity out of each of those joints. let's move on to talking about weather seal, though. i mentioned that we have -- we have weather seal all the way around your whole entire opening. so, you get a nice seal for bugs, rain, everything along those lines. this is your weather seal that's on here. it's called kerf, and it basically just pops in here, but
