6:43 am
you. of a previous poll in september showed the gap was smaller, about 12%. either bay, there is a big gap to jump. wh dyou a celebrity. i'm not a career politician. i'm a businessman. i built a business over 40 years. the state is not managed very well. we are almost unaffordable and unlivable for most people in this state. the cost of living, the cost of housing is outrageous, especially here in the bay area. the cost of gasoline. the housing situation is really driving a lot of people out of the bay area and out of the state. our school systems are 47th in the nation. our water is being rationed. we're being told that is going to be on the table in 2022. you're going to be limited to 55 gallons a day, which is about half of what normally people would be expecting to use. so there's a lot of management issues involving the state. mr. newsome has been there for
6:44 am
16 years, hasn't addressed these problems. he was mayor of san francisco, as you know, for a long time. the homeless situation got worse. it is out of control all across california. i think people need a change. i think people want a definite change. they love this state. the rest of the country has had a wonderful economic recovery. but californians are finding it hard to be able to afford to live. and that he wants the real problem. >> let me talk to you about housing. most of us can agree housing is our biggest concern, especially in the bay area. part of that, as you know, is because you built apartments for many here. >> i have. >> and we just don't have enough of it. there is a study that found we would need 350,000 units every year for the next seven years in order to make up for the deficit in housing in the state. right now we only build 85,000
6:45 am
homes a year. >> it is two issues. yes, we don't have enough supply. it helps to drive the cost. but the cost is driven up by government. government regulations. goernment red tape. lawsuits. impact fees and taxes. the incredible delays. it takes 12, 15 years to get approvals in some cases. that just adds to the cost because builders have to carry the debt and pay taxes while they are waiting. >> how do you cut the time down? >> you have to have leadership. we can build to standards and make sure they don't hurt the environment. but seqa is being used for litigation by lawyers to drive better deals or keep competitors out. >> do you rewrite that completely? >> you have to. you are not accomplishing what you want to accomplish now. it is really holding up construction. i build apartments in indiana
6:46 am
for one-fifth, one-sixth of what it cost to build in the bay area. indiana is a wonderful state. indianapolis is a mer anrds. d i can 90,000 there that cost 600,000 in san francisco. a large part of the difference is land. but most of that difference is government costs. and i have plans to cut that cost. >> i asked our viewers if they would send in questions. i don't have time to get to all of them. but i thought i got a good one this morning. and the question is about what you would do in response to some of president trump's policies. especially as it relates to california. and he wanted to know, we heard the president say recently that some of the fall, according to him for our fires, is because of california itself and that he would perhaps withdraw some of the federal funds when it comes to wildfires in our state. this is a huge issue, especially
6:47 am
in the bay area. what's your response to president trump? >> santa rosa fires were a disaster. we don't build fire breaks into the forrest. we're not clearing out dead or deceased trees and brush. we have to do that. but president trump is not the issue in this race. let's face it, he didn't create the gas tax. he didn't create the housing shortage. he didn't create schools that are 47th in the nation where half of our kids in schools can't read to grade level. >> back to the fire issue for a moment. the fact that he is saying he could withhold federal funds. >> i would obviously fight on that. but what i would also do is make sure our forrests are managed. the current political class in sacramento led by mr. newsome failed the people in the state. we have not managed the forrests. we have to build fire breaks,
6:48 am
clean out the dead and deceased trees. these infernos are fueled by all of this brush on the ground with all of these dead trees. we have to be able to go and manage the forrests. that has not been done. >> but to be clear, you would have a conversation with president trump. >> of course. i will fight the president when it's needed because of california's interests. but, again, he didn't create the affordable or livable crisis. he didn't create the water shortage. we are facing water rationing in the state. we aren't going to be able to take a shower and wash our clothes in the same day. that's on the political class. that's on mr. newsome for failing to build reservoirs, failing to recycle water. failure to build desalination plants. >> it is something that president trump announced in the "new york times".
