a huge fire tears through construction site. sky7 is over that fire on west grand and filbert. it started around 2:00 this morning. you can see we still have flames. good morning to you on this tuesday, october 23rd. >> mike nicco, even the national weather service talking about this fire. >> yeah. some of their newer satellites. take a look at what they're seeing from outer space. they tweeted this picture overnight. and actually this video. what you're seeing is that purple in the circle there. when it bursts, that is the heat

coming from the fire. that's one of the new amenities from these new satellites, is the fact they'll be able to tell fires and show firefighters if they're urban fires or forest fires so they can get there and respond even quicker. let's take a look at the winds, 8 miles an hour in oakland. blowing east and now southeast. more spoke heading down towards san leandro. it's 68 degrees. that's pretty good conditions. let's take a look at my accuweather 12-hour planner. look at noon, high clouds and sunshine, 58 to 62. it's going to be a partly sunny afternoon. with that lack of sunshine from time to time, we'll stay in the 60s at 4:00 and almost everybody back in the 50s by 7:00. let's say hi to sue. >> good morning and hello. we have some pretty light traffic conditions this morning. let's checkutrichmond/san rafael bridge. eight-minute drive from richmond to marin county as you make your way westbound.

bay bridge sold out. metering lights were ondelay. a little sluggish on the upper deck coming into san francisco. other than that, you have about an 18-minute backup from the back of the line to pay your toll. and check on the oracle open world that's starting today and road closures in a few. >> thank you. back to our breaking news in the east bay. a construction housing project going up in flames. that fire seen for miles. and it is not the only one. >> oakland firefighters are dealing with three fires right now. the biggest, you just saw, at west grand and filbert and a fire nearby at west grand and isabella and a third at peralta and 32nd. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is tracking all of this from the site of the biggest fire. hi, amy. >> reporter: good morning. we are now learning there have been two fires overnight that are on the scene of construction

sites. a trend that has been happening over the years here in oakland. look behind me a standing. they are still putting a from a sky7 where you can get a glimpse of some fl firefighters tell me this will probably burn in spots like that throughout the day. they're just in areas they can't reach and they'll be moving through the building through the day. this building was under construction. it was going to be townhomes. this was located at west grand and filbert in west oakland. firefighters got the call about 2:00 this morning. they went to a five-alarm they brought in about 90 firefighters to tackle this huge fire. they were also concerned about embers flying through the air. one did land on a home on

isabella. it did some exterior damage to the home there. they did get that fire out and that home is still standing. no one has been hurt in this fire but they did call in pg&e to go ahead and turn the power off because they were also concerned about what could happen with the transformers in the area. >> roughly 20 to 25 people evacuated along market street as a precaution. we had a lot of embers blowing. exposure buildings were proximal to the incident. >> reporter: so, they evacuated about two dozen people and shut the power off for about 2,000. there are some workers here on the scene who have been working on this construction project. they say they've been working on it since august of last year. they estimate this will probably cost about 50 to 75 people their jobs. they say this is very frustrated and upsetting. firefighters here on the scene tell me, investigators are here. they're not ready to call this suspicious yet, even though it

they'll make sure there are no hot spots inside. one person did die in a fire here overnight. it started about 3:30 at this home. someone from inside the home heard the smoke alarm going off and called 911. when firefighters arrived there were two people inside they had to rescue. one a woman they brought out who died on the scene. the man was taken to the hospital. he'll be treated for burns and smoke inhalation. firefighters say it doesn't appear that anything is suspicious here but they do have investigators on the scene looking into the cause of the fire. funston avenue is closed between irving and juda. five other people from within this home are out, safe and doing okay. they're being helped by the red cross. they'll need another place to stay as firefighters continue their work this morning here in san francisco. reporting live in san francisco, matt keller, abc7 news. >> thank you. a new challenge over the redevelopment of cupertino's va will. will. co mall. why a city worker says the controversial plan cost him his job.>y, goamazonndorste is aut

let's take a look at what's going on with our temperatures. we're in the low to mid-50s throughout san francisco. excelsior at 51. 49 right now in palo alto, walnut creek. the rest in the low to mid-50s. notice the lack of fog on the golden gate bridge this morning. here's a look at our beaches. they'll be cool everywhere, the water and play. comfy conditions if you're doing yard work. the peninsula, 64 this afternoon and 67 this evening with stars come out. in east bay valleys, upper 50s to low 60s with cloud cover.

we'll take a look at the san mateo bridge for your tuesday morning drive coming up on 6:11. you can see brake lights are starting to happen on the causeway in the flat section and sluggish up the high rise over towards the peninsula side of things. that's about an 18-minute drive from 880 towards 101. overall we're getting a little busier out there. traffic volume starting to grow. we have the slow traffic out of tracy and slow on the sunol grade and traffic through the concord area. we will check back because it looks like there might have been a new axe deputy forming near treat boulevard in walnut creek. we'll check on that in a couple of minutes. an unusual situation in cupertino where the city attorney is reportedly planning to sue the city. according to our media partner "the mercury news," randolph administrative leave. junction

welcome back. we want to take you live to sky7 over breaking news in oakland. you're seeing a lot of flashing lights. this was a massive fire at a construction site at grand avenue and filbert. this is one of three fires burning in the oakland area right now. we hear embers burned a home on grand and isabella and another fire at peralta and 32nd. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live for us live. she's got a lot of new information coming up at 6:30. new at 6:00, is starng impat'soo ely ifhe toxinill cr was delayed in parts of

california last year because of domoiccoer riders are suing lime and bird. a class-action lawsuit involving nine people were filed in los angeles friday. scooter riders and pedestrians say they were hurt because of the company's gross negligence. some injuries include broken wrists, arms, torn ligaments and damaged teeth. a spokesperson for lime said safety is a priority and lime's mission is to reduce the number of cars on city streets to make it safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and scooter riders. bird says, e-scooters are no more dangerous than riding a bike. the company notes cars remain the greatest threat to commuters, killing more than 40,000 people in the u.s. each year. amazon is opening a new lesthan 300 california street. this is the cashier-less store. sensors will charge you.

a street named after maggie. new at 6:00 -- a taxi driver say a new rule at sfo takes away their free speechre allowed to hand out leaflet at airport parking garages. that new rule allows drivers to exercise free speech activities only at a picnic table area within the lot. commissioners say those types of activities where cars are moving pose safety concerns. the saection alliance is now considering legal action. if you want to test-drive a tesla for longer than 15 minutes, ceo elon musk revealed on twitter there is a loophole that lets you do it and lets you do it for three days. however, you have to actually buy the car first and then you can return it within three days to get a refund. so, it's a pretty big string attached. musk was responding a tweet by u2 personality james charles, who is 19. tesla requires people who

bridge. a little backup if you're heading through the fast the cash is better, i should say. once you're on the span, it is a bit of a backup. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights were on at 5:20 this morning. you can see the carpoolers are getting by just fine, but you are backed up into the macarthur maze for a good solid 15-minute delay getting to the tolls and a little sluggish on the incline once headed into san francisco. so, we'll take a look out there at some of your slower drive times out and about for your commute. highway 4 to the maze, the upper part of the corridor, you're looking at about a 30-minute drive. there's your backup at the bay bridge. about 45 all the way into san francisco from hercules. if you're headed to sfo, it's about a ten-minute drive leaving san francisco. let's get back to breaking news in oakland. vouringon.t, the huge flames

just a few hours ago. on the right, sky7 live over the scene right now on west grand avenue near inutes ago this complex included six structures, all of which caught fire. as you can see on the right there, that fire is still burning. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has been there all morning long gathering the latest details. what do we know? >> reporter: they are now saying that four of the buildings here are a total loss. they still are fighting fire inside two buildings. take a look at the view from sky7 where you can see the flames they're still dealing with and the fight they're still engaged in. the water they're still putting on this building. they're calling the fire they're burning very stubborn and they think they'll be dealing with it all day long. these are townhomes under construction. they were -- this is at west grand and filbert in oakland. they got the call about 2:00 this morning and firefighters say it took them about 80 minutes until they got the huge

five-alarm fire tamped down and somewhat under control. they're still not calling it contained or out. it was 80 minutes of an intense fire fight with about 90 firefighters since they went to the fifth alarm. these townhomes were called ice house. they were going to be sling these homes for around $600,000 each. the fire is now under skrefgs. they're not calling it suspicious at this time. they still want to investigate the construction equipmnt being used here to see if something else could have started it other than an arsonist. it is under investigation, of course. they say this is the first of two fires overnight at construction sites. listen to this briefing we just got where the deputy chief talks about the second fire of the night. >> we did receive a report of another structure fire in the 3600 block, i believe, of

peralta a little after 3:00. arriving companies did not -- the fire was out on arrival but there was a suspicious possible cause so that's also under investigation. that was a building under construction. >> reporter: back here at grand and filbert, this fire was so huge, giant embers were flying off it and one landed on a home on isabella. the structure, the exterior of that home, does have some damage but they say they got that fire out pretty quickly. they turned the power off to about 2,000 customers in the area because some transformers were blowing. we're starting to see some lights come back on, so they're starting to return the power to some. they're working on that. they evacuated about 20 people in this area just in case. those people are still evacuating. we're seeing some still out here on the sidewalk. it's very cold out here. the firefighters say at this point they can't let them return home, not while they still have this active fire burning in those two buildings. live in oakland, amy hollyfield,

abc7 news. >> it seems like we report on this time and time again, the same -- similar kind of situation on fire in oakland. where are we now numberswise as far as how many fires we've seen in the past few years? >> reporter: well, i know there's been five in oakland before these two. don't forget that huge one we saw in concord. we also saw a huge one in emeryville. all have been construction sites where they were building residences. i did talk to some workers who have been working on this project. they're very frustrated, upset. they say there has been some graffiti here so they feel like they've been getting some negativity about this project. now this. they're worried this could cost anywhere from 50 to 75 people their jobs, who have been working on this building. but at this point, we're looking at this being number six and seven just here in oakland. reggie? >> in an area where we're facing a housing crisis. amy hollyfield, it is frustrating, thank you. we sent a push alert as soon
