injured, but they are expected to be okay. no word on what caused that crash. the midterm elections less than two weeks away, but already there is record turnout. early voters have been lining up for hours. and look at this figure, more than 7 million people have now voted early compared to just 1.9 million at this point during the last midterm elections in 2014. this morning, the enthusiasm, the stakes, the voter turnout all riding high in the midterm elections. in texas, senator ted cruz and beto o'rourke are in a closer than expected fight. more than a half million people cast their ballots on the first day of early voting shattering midterm records. >> the last midterm cycle, abysmal voter turnout in texas. 50th out of the 50 states. republicans have turned out in midterm years in texas. that has been a fact of life. it has to change for democrats if beto o'rourke is going to win. >> reporter: experts say it's too early to draw conclusions but the high vur e repuican.unning for governor in georgia against

democrat stacey abrams, she would be become the first black ofsayingurge i earl unprecedented number of that, which is something that continues to concern us, especially if everybody uses and exercises their right to vote. >> reporter: the georgia race not without controversy. 53,000 voter registrations are on hold, most of them black voters because of a new law which says a voter's registration application and driver's license have to match. a missing middle name or different address means the application gets suspended. and as the current secretary of state, kemp is in charge of carrying out that law, which critics call a conflict of interest. >> i'm not going to give up. i'm going to be counted. >> yeah. >> this is going to be handled. >> reporter: during a debate last night, kemp denied that he's trying to suppress the vote and said any flagged registration can be sorted out at election sites or the voter

can cast a provisional ballot. >> if you look at the numbers, minority participation in georgia is up 23%. we have a million more people on our voter rolls today than we had when i took office. >> reporter: abrams facing her own controversy after video surfaced showing her as a college freshman burning a georgia state flag in 1992. that flag, however, with the confederate symbol was replaced in 2001. >> i along with many other georgians including the governor of georgia were deeply disturbed by the racial divisiveness that was embedded in the state flag with that confederate symbol. ten years later my opponent brian kemp actually voted to remove that symbol. >> the stakes are high. >> reporter: for the democrats former president obama and vice president biden as well as bernie sanders all hitting the campaign trail, and as election day approaches, the president is raising eyebrows by spreading false claims about that caravan of migrants traveling through mexico. with no evidence the president d t he nowwledges ere'

new jersey where six children died after an outbreak of a flu-like virus. published reports indicate investigations uncovered infection control issues at the center in the last two years. those investigations are not of the adenovirus, which has also sickened a dozen children. all of the affected children had weakened immune systems. >> adenovirus is an incredibly common virus causing upper respiratory infections. it's rare to see fatalities from such a common virus. >> well, experts say hand washing is the best way to prevent such an outbreak, and a recent inspection revealed hand washing deficiencies at that facility. turning now to the weather, hurricane willa has weakened to a tropical storm. it's expected to arrive in texas later today after sweeping across mexico. a flash flood watch is in effect for much of southern texas.

we're back with this dramatic video of a fire ripping through a 19th century church in wakefield, massachusetts, north of boston. those flames and smoke could be seen for miles, and nobody was hurt. a lightning strike is blamed for sparking that fire. new questions are emerging about the murder of a track star at the university of utah. police say 21-year-old lauren mccluskey was shot by her ex-boyfriend, melvin rowland, who later took his own life. mccluskey had filed a harassment

jumping and dancing on the escalator before it came crashing down. back in this country, we are now hearing from the pilot of a vintage plane who survived an incredible crash on a freeway in l.a. >> and as you're about to see, he is a very lucky man. a dramatic plane crash on one of california's busiest freeways in the middle of the day. video from one driver captures the unbelievable moment as the plane barrels towards the highway, cars underneath, hitting the ground, bouncing twice, the wind kicking up dust from the hill before crashing into the center divider erupting in flames. 90 gallons of fuel spilled on the roadway closing the road for hours creating a traffic nightmare, cars backed up for miles. >> it's awful. it's terrible. we're moving about one or two car lengths every five minutes. it took us about one hour to go one mile. >> reporter: the airplan destroyed, but miraculously nobody was hurt. the pilot walking out of the wreckage. despite the chaos, he remained

calm. >> i picked a spot on the freeway where i knew there was a big section of cars that weren't there, but the engine completely failed, and i was able to fortunately not hurt anybody other than the airplane. >> incredible there. that pilot says he was on a test flight. the plane dates back to world war ii era. the faa is now investigating. >> i think it failed that test. nbc's megyn kelly has apologized after suggesting that it's okay to dress up in blackface for halloween. kelly raised the issue during a segment on her show with an all white panel. she cited a reality star's controversial costume and questioned why it was considered racist. >> you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blk person who puts on whiteface for halloween. like, okay, when i was a kid that was okay as long as you were dressing up like as a character. there was a controversy on "the real housewives of new york" as luann dressed as diana ross and she made her skin look darker than it really is,
