>> reporter: good morning, janai and kendis.otr suspicious package and more concerns about more devices. this morning, the nationwide manhunt for the person responsible for these pipe bomb packages. the targets, former presidents, high-profile democratic political figures and cnn. >> projectiles, i mean, that's a -- excuse me. that sounds like a fire alarm here. >> reporter: the network surprised on the air. their offices in the time warner center in new york city evacuated, an act of terror unfolding. >> we will not let terrorism win, not today, not ever. >> reporter: overnight federal authorities now looking into a possible eighth suspicious package sent to former vp joe biden. the explosive devices and suspicious packages also sent to the homes or offices of the clintons, the obamas, california representative maxine waters and former attorney general eric holder. that pipe bomb discovered in cnn's mailroom addressed to former cia director john brennan.

several american flag stamps on the yellow package, which was carried away in a bomb containment truck. a similar pipe bomb was sent to billionaire democratic donor george soros monday. >> the federal government is conducting an aggressive investigation. >> reporter: the targets are all outspoken critics of president trump. he campaigned in wisconsin calling for unity before blaming the media, which he often attacks. >> the media also has a responsibility to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility. >> reporter: the devices didn't detonate. they're being examined at an fbi lab in virginia. sources say they contain similar components. the same packaging and the return address was the office of former dnc chair congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz. authorities don't believe she's involved. the fbi doesn't believe the packages were delivered by the u.s. postal service. we also know that experts say that investigators likely have a treasure trove of forensic

evidence to find a suspect. janai and kendis. >> and all those packages are in northern virginia right now at fbi headquarters. kenneth moton in d.c. and earlier we spoke with the gomez. >> and he explained what's next in the investigation and the clues that those devices may hold. >> if they didn't go off, was it because they were poorly made? maybe this was somebody who is somewhat of an amateur and didn't quite understand the instructions that are required for making these types of pipe bombs or maybe these bombs were made in a way where they would not go off where they were intended to just instill fear in their victims and in america, especially leading up to the elections and that was then a way for the political agenda and influence of the elections to be affected by these bombs. this investigation is so urgent, it's 24/7. nobody is sleeping right now because of the fact that there

were seven devices, and there's a probability, i mean, they have to assume that there are more devices. >> and even though the bombs did not detonate, investigators fear the intent was to maim or kill those who received them. well, the pipe bombs now have many americans asking whether the political discourse in this country has become too heated. >> and you don't have to look too far to find examples of the violent rhetoric in today's politics. former cia director john brennan speaking last night calling for unity after one of the bombs was addressed to him. >> if i and others are being targeted because we're speaking out and we're living up to our responsibilities as citizens, i think that again is a very unfortunate turn of events. >> reporter: investigators are still trying to determine who sent explosive devices to high-profile democrats, but experts say it's likely a product of the political climate. >> it seems as though the past couple of weeks the president has really appealed to his base,

called himself a nationalist, you know, really gone very hard to the right. >> reporter: this morning lawmakers are moving quickly to denounce the series of attempted bomb attacks. >> that is an act of terrorism. there is no place for that in our democracy. >> reporter: representative steve scalise was nearly killed last year when a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice. >> this isn't the way that we should expect america to be turning. i mean, you're seeing more and more of this, and clearly you're seeing it on both sides. >> reporter: in recent weeks with the midterms approaching, the vitriol and even violence on the campaign trail has been building. in pennsylvania, a candidate for governor had this message for his opponent. >> you better put a catcher's mask on your face because i'm going to stomp all over your face with golf spikes. >> reporter: in california, a congressional candidate had to fend off a knife attack with a campaign sign. >> you don't belong here. >> reporter: the anger even evident at restaurants where members of both parties have been heckled.

we're back with a collision of a big rig and a school bus near austin, texas. look at that. ten children were on that bus and were treated for minor injuries. that truck driver says he had a yellow light at the time. police are investigating. a growing security concern at the white house. "the new york times" reports russia and china have been eavesdropping on president trump's personal phone calls. aides have reportedly asked him to stop using his personal iphone, but he's refused. u.s. intelligence agencies believe the russians and chinese have been listening to the calls hoping to find ways to influence the administration. u.s. officials who talked to "the times" say they're frustrated and hope the president is not discussing classified information. this morning, we are learning more about the deadly outbreak of a flu-like virus aer the mother of one of the seven children who died from adenovirus claims the facility was infected with bugs. another mother who lost her

we turn now to a disturbing school plot in florida. two young girls are accused of bringing knives to school to kill their classmates. authorities say the girls worshipped satan. >> the visual evidence in this case is especially chilling. here's abc's victor oquendo. >> reporter: police say two girls just 11 and 12 years old brought these knives and this pizza cutter to school and were just moments away from carrying out a plot to attack and kill their middle school classmates tuesday. >> we're afraid, and she's afraid. >> reporter: according to police, the girls were discovered together in a bathroom after first period allegedly planning to overpower and stab other students who came inside. according to investigators, the plan was hatched while watching scary movies during a sleepover. police also say their investigation revealed disturbing communication between the girls, child-like drawings of the school and this handwritten note that reads, go to kill in bathroom. overnight police crediting fellow students for reporting rumors about a possible school attack. >> we had other students that heard a rumor and reported that

breaking news from new york city police are dealing with another suspicious package at an address linked to actor robert de niro. abc news has confirmed the package was, in fact, addressed to the actor. cnn is reporting that a package of found on the 8th floor of the building. the police put it in a bomb containment truck. that is being taken to an area where they can safely inspect it. it comes a day after suspicious packages were sent to maxine waters, bill and hillary clinton, former president obama. >> this is going into a second day. we will go live to washington in just a few minutes. today is thursday, october
