>> reporter: the bart board says it was trying to beef up safety and privacy by unanimously approving a package of new security measures to be installed in the coming years, along with guidelines how they can be used and how long the data can be kept. >> the police department is working with bart i.t. department mechanical engineering. we're all working together to bring these things toke. >> reporter: one of those things is a mobile app that will help riders find the closest bart station. it will need your location to do so. they plan to add to the 4,000 cameras they have and update them to criminal and catch those they can't stop. cameras help police catch the man charged with murdering neil wilson back in july. bart board president robert rayburn says that incident provided urgency to what they were doing. >> sometimes it takes a tragedy in order to focus attention. >> reporter: there would also be video monitors at the station gate so passengers can see

what's happening on the platforms. this artist depiction shows emergency phones installed so passengers can talk directly to police dispatchers. all with the privacy advocates. >> we like it's not limited. it's buttoned up so people might know where to go under what circumstances. >> reporter: now, all of these are planned for the future. in fact the money has not been allocated yet. bart says it wanted to make sure it had the guidelines for under surveillance. so they don't invade anyone's privacy by trying to maintain people's safety, as the delicate balancing act. live at the bart station, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> eric. thank you. a man accused of posingi as ride share driver hand assaulting a woman has been arrested. they arrested brandon sherman this morning. that's the photo. on the left, that's the sketch

investigators released in august. during the course of the investigation, people found out he had been suspended by uber for misconduct the day before the assault. >> we also do believe at the time of this incident he was still employed as a driver with lyft. and at the time of the incident, his vehicle did have a fix to the windshield both lyft and uber stickers. >> police stress to always check the car and license plate number matches those displayed on the app. in the north bay, part of travis boulevard in fairfield is shut down while police investigate a crash. they say the driver had been shot. police never fired their weapons. sky 7 is live over the scene near dover avenue. police say the driver crashed into other cars around 2:30 this afternoon. you can still see the police tape up. then officers discovered a gunshot wound. >> that driver was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. well, finding bombs is one of the top priorities for the tsa, of course, while it has a

lot of technology to do that, at its disposal, it frequently relies on the old faxed method of dogs. david liu is live. he got a look at that pros says. >> reporter: we certainly did. it's not just san jose, that has tsa bomb sniffing dogs. here in san jose, more than 1.1 million people went through screening last month. the dogs were so unobtrusively that many passengers say it does not in anyway delay the screening process. they're the kind of flop pierred dogs people would love to have as pets. they have a special job. they've undergone a 12-week training program to sniff out explosives. >> it does not need to be a fully assembled bomb, if you will. it can even be the components of anything explosive. they're trained to detect

literally hundreds of types of explosives. >> buck is a five-year-old german pointer. he and his handler sasha has been a team. each are matched up and go home together after work. they typically work 40 minutes at a time followed by break and daily training. she says her k-9 partner doesn't have an off switch. the black labrador retriever gets excited about going to work, that's ideal. >> just seeing the dog do its thing, having them work on their own and finding what you are supposed to be finding, that's the greatest joy. >> reporter: the k-9 teams provide an additional detection to pre boarding procedures. you notice the dogs where do not pet signs. that's because the dogs need air flow around them to sniff for explosives. >> i wanted to pet it. i road the sign, nope, let it do its job. >> reporter: their reward is playing with a squeaky toy and do they relish that reward.

their sense of smell is extraordinary as the tsa puts it, who ill the human might detect a pizza by smell, these dogs can sniff out the individual ingredients. now when it's time for these bomb dogs to retire, they're very much in demand. tsa has an adoption program. there will be quite a wait if you are interested. there are currently 5,000 people in line waiting to see if they can adopt one. we are live in san jose international, david lui, abc 7 news. >> david, thouchg. yosemite park rangers are still working to recover the bodies of a man and woman that died from taft point. visitors reported seeing the bodies, taft point has an elevation of 7500 feet. they're trail mark,s and a barrier. these mark the fifth and sixth death in yosemite last year. just last month, an israeli man slipped off a cliff taking a

selfie. as the bay area reaches out the pentagon is preparing to deploy at least 800 troops to the u.s. mexico border to confront a mike grant caravan that you've seen. in a tweet, president trump told the people to turn around. people walking to the border say they feel like they don't have a choice. >> what i want more than anything is to pay for treatment my mother needs for her health. >> my son is there in the united states. i have a desire to see my son. it is too much. >> this morning the caravan left the mexican town of mapastepec. now supplies are being checked here to send them. laura anthony is live in downtown oakland with a story tonight. laura. >> reporter: well, hi. while the president is planning to send troops to the border the folks here at this store are planning to send something else

necessities to distribute to the migrants, once they reach the u.s. border. why did you want to do this? >> i really wanted to open my space up to show solidarity to the migrants, being i'm a daughter of an immigrant, it's important to me to use my privilege to help the people. >> reporter: i'm a documented artist. >> reporter: artist nico gonzalez told us he can relate to the struggles of those in the caravan. >> i think this shows solidarity just as the people in mexico are showing solidarity by feeding the people. by clothing the people that are walking. >> reporter: now, the folks here at beauty bo tanaka will be opened tonight, every night, they tell me from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to accept these donations between now and november 9th. they will be here collecting. they told me they will deliver these items personally. if anyone wants more information, they can find that on our website abc 7 news.c

and to not be in debt and so, this was our choice. >> reporter: tired of living paycheck to paycheck, this duo now gets by on about $1,000 a month combined, showering at the gym, doing home at the school and eating tuna and rice for most meals. >> she's willing to live in it for nine years. >> reporter: this lifestyle they call their life hasn't come easy. >> ehave to park in a safe area. a couple times we got our windows busted. >> they are spreading the message of turning the materialistic into the minimalistic and it can be done by anyone. >> living in a van, we wanted to show like people that are low income housing that if you want to choose to go to school that you can live in a van or there's other options to live. >> reporter: and learning to make it work along the way. >> i would say unity, commitment and success as in the ingoing mind and then love, too. >> yeah, love, how soon.
