good morning. good morning. i'm janai norman. >> and i'm kendis gibson. here are some of our top headlines we're following this friday morning on "world news now." a mail facility near miami is now the focus of investigators hoping to get to the bottom of the bomb scare that is targeting so many democrats. the latest devices were addressed to former vice president joe biden and robert de niro. full coverage up next. in washington, d.c., hundreds came out to remember matthew shepard 20 years after he was kidnapped and killed for being gay. his ashes will be interred in the national cathedral today. missed out on the nearly $1.6 billion mega millions jackpot? well, there is a consolation prize this weekend and it's not a bad one. tomorrow night's powerball drawing is worth an estimated $750 million. that's the fourth largest in

u.s. history. and the dodgers are back home hoping the warm l.a. weather will help their bats eat heat up in tonight's game three of the world series. the red sox lead the series two games to none. the temperature at game time tonight is expected to be in the mid-80s. a big change. those are some of our top stories on this friday, october 26th. from abc news, this is "world news now." the red sox are pretty good. they could go for a sweep. >> looks like they might. >> we'll see if that l.a. weather will help. we're going to begin this half hour with the urgent manhunt who whoever is behind the string of pipe bombs. >> investigators are combing through a postal facility near miami where some of the packages may have been mailed from. because the devices are still in tact, they're expected to offer a treasure trove of clues. abc's juju chang has the latest. >> reporter: a nationwide investigation and manhunt under

way. in search of the bomb maker and those who may have mailed them. ten separate packages containing suspected explosive devices all addressed to prominent critics of president trump. from new york to los angeles, florida to washington, d.c. and delaware. law enforcement now chasing leads in southern florida where officials suspect some of the potential bombs may have originated. in new york city, a suspicious package intercepted. this one addressed to actor robert de niro. remember, at this year's tony awards, de niro took aim at the president. >> it's no longer down with trump, it's [ bleep ] trump. >> reporter: at the time, the president responding, calling de niro a very low iq individual. too many shots to the head by real boxers, he said. and federal investigators now pi ieve all ten packages went george soros in a suburb north of new york city. then late tuesday night, another device.

clinton, intercepted by the secret service before it reached her home in westchester county, new york. just hours later, a third suspicious package intercepted in washington, d.c. addressed to the home of former president obama. then in new york city, cnn was reporting on the spate of suspicious devices when their own alarms began to ring. >> to have projectiles -- that's a -- excuse me, that sounds like a fire alarm here. we'll keep you posted on that. >> reporter: that device was addressed to former cia director john brennan at the cnn address. then in maryland, a package addressed to democratic california congresswoman maxine waters. another device also addressed to the congresswoman was found at a postal facility in los angeles. in florida, police rushing to the office of democratic congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz. the device there had been addressed to former obama attorney general eric holder but had wasserman schultz as the return address.

then two packages addressed for former vice president joe biden. both intercepted at postal facilities in delaware. the tenth and latest package addressed to de niro. meanwhile, across the country a renewed debate over political rhetoric going too far. in wisconsin, the president condemned what he called political violence. >> we want all sides to come together in peace and harmony. we can do it. we can do it. we can do it. >> reporter: but president trump once again attacking the media, tweeting, a very big part of the anger we see today in our society is caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the mainstream media that i refer to as fake news. it has gotten so bad and hateful that it is beyond description. mainstream media must clean up its act fast. in a statement, jeff zucker, cnn worldwide president, said there is a total and complete lack of understanding at the white house about the seriousness of their continued attack on the media.

the president and especially the white house press secretary should understand their words matter. thus far they have shown no comprehension of that. in new york, a city stands firm in the face of yet another act of terror. juju chang, abc news, new york. >> and president trump toned down his attacks on democrats at his latest rally but critics don't expect it to last in the run-up to the midterm elections. >> the white house is rejecting any claims the president is to blame for creating the divisive political climate that may have motivated the bomb scare. the press secretary came to the president's defense. >> there's a big difference between comments made and actions taken. the idea that this is at the hands of the president is absolutely ridiculous. >> again, the president blamed the anger in society on what he called fake news by the mainstream media, tweeting, it has gotten so bad and hateful that it is beyond description. former cia director john brennan

fired back on twitter, telling the president to stop blaming others, look in the mirror and clean up his act. so authorities will try to determine if the devices were intended to detonate or simply spark fear ahead of the election. >> for more insight into what investigators are looking for, we turn to former fbi agent and abc contributor steve gomez. steve, good morning. police and federal investigators are at a postal facility near miami. what exactly are they looking for? >> good morning. what they are looking for is the potential that this is the location where the suspect or suspects dropped off the packages. so now you have a number of investigative leads that can take place between looking for video, interviewing people, trying to figure out if anybody saw anybody that was coming in with a number of packages. if that was the only postal office that was used. >> got it. are these real bombs? >> they appear to be functioning bombs. it's a question of, are these

bombs that can be exploded. >> we had ten, why didn't any go off? >> that's a very good question. it seems they were capable of going off. would they have actually hurt anybody or killed anybody? probably not from what we understand. why would they do that? that's a big question because they might not truly want them to be hurt but maybe send a message not only to them but to the whole american public. >> steve, so far ten bombs. they've sparked a lot of fear, especially across the east coast. does it seem like this is something somebody could have done on a whim or a lot of planning? >> a lot of planning has to go into an operation like this. you're talking about ten devices. it's not just building a bomb, which takes a lot of work. you have to go about and acquire all the different tools and materials. once you get that, now you have the packaging that you have to put together. the packaging was all very similar. there must be a reason for why they did that.

so there was a lot of work that went into this. this isn't something that would have taken place overnight. it would have taken weeks, if not months. that makes you start to wonder, was there more than one person that was involved in this operation. >> very interesting. steve, thank you. well, president trump is considering a wide range of actions to keep that migrant caravan from crossing into the u.s. the white house says no decision has been made and when one is it won't be announced. reports say one plan is to shut the border to central americans and not consider any asylum requests. another is to send active duty troops, not the national guard, to the border. the caravan is still about 1,000 miles from the united states. asian markets slipped lower overnight following a rebound on wall street. the rally wiped out a large part of the losses that stocks suffered on wednesday. it also moved the dow and the s&p 500 back into positive territory for the year. one stock that could suffer

today is snap, the photo sharing company slumped to an all time low. snap is also warning investors that it expects to continue losing daily active users. ford is recalling nearly 1.5 million focus models. ford says there is a problem with a defective fuel valve that causes the cars to stall and not restart. the recall affects many models that were made between 2012 and 2018. ford is advising customers to keep their fuel tanks to at least half full until this problem is fixed. well, the man known as the french spiderman has taken his game across the english channel again. >> yeah, alain robert made his way up a london skyscraper with no safety equipment. the crowd watched from the street as the 56-year-old daredevil made it to the top where he was promptly arrested.

robert de niro. like the others, they're vocal critics and targets of president trump. we start with abc's maggie rulli. >> it's absolutely terrorism. >> reporter: the nationwide manhunt for an alleged attempted bomber continues. >> i can say with certainty that we will identify and arrest the person or people responsible for these acts. >> reporter: multiple sources confirmed to abc news that federal authorities are following promising leads right now in south florida, zeroing in on this mail facility in opa-locka as the potential place that at least some of the packages were mailed through. this desperate to find the person or people behind the ten nearly identical suspicious packages sent across the country to targets including barack obama, hillary clinton, congresswoman maxine waters and most recently former vice president joe biden and actor robert de niro. instorbeeve were all sentou the posofce anthey feamore may still b out there. >> we have over 600,000 postal employees out there so we have their eyes and ears looking for

these packages. >> reporter: sources say each package so far contained a digital clock, explosive powder, a battery as a power source and wiring to channel a spark for detonation. glass was also found, used as shrapnel. now each of those devices is being painstakingly examined. sources tell abc news that agents are searching each one for fingerprints. from how the wires are twisted they can tell if the bomber is right or left-handed. they are also trying to figure out if the devices were meant to detonate or made to simply create fear and panic. kendis and janai? >> maggie, thank you. >> and authorities say they're treating the suspected bombs as live devices that should be considered dangerous. >> for more on the investigation, we turn to former fbi special agent and abc news contributor steve gomez joining us from l.a. steve, good morning to you. where does the investigation stand?

>> well, they have ten devices that are at the fbi lab right now undergoing extensive analysis and examination to try to figure out, how were they constructed, what were the materials that were contained in the devices, where did they acquire those types of meats? some of these materials may have been acquired at certain places where they can go and identify certain stores, try to figure out if there were any individuals that came in, look at video, look at receipts and so on. those could provide very valuable leads to hopefully identify a suspect. >> steve, how could they narrow this down to a postal office possibly in south florida? >> well, the logical step to start with is the fact that the return addresses on every package was from south florida at an address that was shown as debbie wasserman schultz's office. even though it wasn't her office. so the assumption is to make these packages look like they were righteously coming from her is that they would have been placed into one of the postal offices in south florida.

so it's logical that they would have sent over a number of resources out there. i'm sure they're canvassing all the postal offices in that general area to try to figure out if that was one of the areas where they placed these packages in for delivery. >> so give me a profile of who we're looking for. do you figure it's some dude sitting in his mom's basement watching youtube videos and putting these things out or many people who are more serious and a little bit more sinister? >> well, initially when you started to hear about the packages that were being delivered to, say, former president obama, hillary clinton and so on, you started to think that the profile was somebody who was anti-democrat, anti-liberal. somebody maybe on the right side of the political spectrum. but as you start to go along and see that there are now ten devices and none of these devices went off, you start to wonder, okay, is this somebody who is maybe more concerned about affecting our political

agenda, the political system, especially in light of the fact that we have an election coming up in 12 days? and that's something that, in my view, is more of a domestic terrorism type of situation where they're trying to influence. it's not necessarily like al qaeda or something international. it's more domestic. they're probably trying to influence it. so it's a matter of from which side of the spectrum or maybe it's just somebody like you said, kendis, who is just more interested in trying to get some attention and send out these devices. >> well, they've gotten our attention and they've influenced, certainly. our thanks to steve gomez there in los angeles. thank you. moving on now to saudi arabia's admission that the killing of jamal khashoggi was premeditated. that statement contradicts the saudi's previous assertions that "the washington post" columnist was killed by mistake during a fight in the consulate in istanbul. also, we now know that cia director gina haspel has briefed president trump on the evidence of khashoggi's death that she reviewed on a trip to turkey.

also, khashoggi's son has left saudi arabia. we last saw salah khashoggi being offered condolences from saudi leaders. he and his family headed to the u.s. yesterday after a travel ban against them was lifted. their destination wasn't immediately clear. it's also unclear whether the family will meet with anyone from the trump administration. turning now to the weather in the u.s. -- the eastern u.s. is gearing up for a powerful storm. >> that system is over the south right now with heavy rain, but when it reaches the northeast, some of its precipitation will be snow. >> it's hard to see the map. there is a lot of precipitation there. accuweather's julia weiden has the storm's track. good morning. >> kendis, janai, we've seen soaking rains in the southeast. we have more to come today up through the carolinas and then into saturday, that wet and windy weather will arrive to the northeast. we're looking at that rain moving from southwest to northeast, bringing soaking rains, about 1 to 3 inches in total through the first half of the weekend. on top of that, high gusting winds will cause scattered power outages and coastal flooding.

a better place. >> wasserman schultz was speaking at a campaign event for florida's democratic candidate for governor andrew gillum. she also said democrats won't be cowed into submission by people who hate. moving on to president trump's plan to send at least 800 active duty troops to the southern border. with election day less than two weeks away, these troops could be there as early as next week to support the border patrol with vehicles and other equipment. the president says he's using the military to respond to what he calls a national emergency. also, trump is said to be considering a wide range of executive actions to bar migrants from crossing the southern border and seeking asylum. in the meantime, the so-called migrant caravan in mexico is still about 1,000 miles from the nearest u.s. border crossing. but in a tweet president trump told them to turn around. police say the utah college student killed by her ex-boyfriend was being stalked days and even hours before her murder.

detectives say the man who shot lauren mccluskey was in her dorm with her friends the day she was killed. police say the pair met last month and she broke up with him after learning his real identity and criminal background but stayed in contact. investigators said there wasn't enough evidence to file a restraining order. another child has died from influenza, this time in new york city. the first pediatric death this flu season was reported in florida. a child who had not received a flu shot. a record number of children in the u.s. died from the flu last year and about 80% of them had not been vaccinated. this weekend is likely to be a washout here in the northeast. >> but first the severe storm system is soaking the deep south. region, and you can see it's in has more details. julia, good morning. >> janai, kendis, soaking rains expected again today in the
