in houston. and the feel-good story of the week. a young man helping a woman in need. she couldn't believe it. and we do say good morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm janai norman. we begin with the urgent search who is behind the terrifying bomb scare putting high-profile democrats and other critics of president trump on alert. >> as investigators brace for more suspected bombs, they're focusing on south florida where some of the devices originated. at 3:14 this morning president trump tweeting this message, funny how lowly rated cnn and others can criticize me at will even blaming me for the current spate of bombs and ridiculously comparing this to september 11th and the oklahoma city bombing, yet when i criticize them, they go wild and scream it's just not presidential. >> abc's elizabeth hagedorn has the latest on the investigation into the bomb scares.

elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. federal authorities are warning the public to stay alert as the investigation takes them to a postal facility in south florida. the manhunt continues coast to coast. >> i can say with certainty that we will identify and arrest the person or people responsible for these acts, make no mistake. >> reporter: federal investigators now chasing a lead in south florida. sources confirming to abc news authorities believe at least some of the packages went through a mail facility near miami. the devices now being analyzed at the fbi lab in quantico, virginia. all of them, abc is told, went through the u.s. postal service. >> we have over 600,000 postal employees out there right now, so we have their eyes and ears looking for these packages. >> reporter: the investigation widened thursday with law enforcement seizing several more packages bringing the total to ten.

still intact, they're providing a treasure trove of clues. >> the fact that none exploded may be crucial in figuring out the motive. steve gomez spoke with us overnight about what agents are trying to determine as they examine those devices right now. >> and it seems like they were capable of going off but would they have actually hurt anybody or killed anybody? probably not from what we understand were the contents inside these devices. and that's a big question as far as why would somebody put those types of devices into the mail system. as you start to go along and see that there were now ten devices and none of these devices went off, you start to wonder, okay, is this somebody who is maybe more concerned about affecting our political agenda, the political system, especially in light of the fact that we have an election coming up in 12 days, and that's something that in my view is more of a domestic terrorism type of situation where they're trying to influence. >> and stay with abc news for the latest on the investigation

into the bomb threats, and download the abc news app for live coverage throughout the day. well, turning now to the other story that's breaking overnight, word that president is considering a plan to close the southern border to stop migrants from entering the u.s. any executive action that he takes to close the border will likely be met with a challenge in a federal court. a white house official says no final decisions have been made, but the president is sending 800 troops to support the u.s. border patrol as soon as next week. this action, mind you, just ahead of midterm elections. in the meantime, the caravan of migrants currently in southern mexico and marching north has now dwindled from about 7,000 to 3,000, but the president is still tweeting about it saying to those in the caravan, turn around, we are not letting people into the u.s. illegally. go back to your country if you want to apply for citizenship like millions of others are doing. abc's marcus moore is with the migrants in mexico who have heard the president's message.

>> reporter: it hasn't deterred them. i mean, just look around, and you see the men, women and children who are here despite the threats that they've heard from president trump and the white house. they have heard these things, but they're not worried about it. they still say that they need to get away from the violence and the corruption in their native countries, and also they're looking for opportunities that they think that they can find in the united states. >> the migrant caravan remains about 1,000 miles away from the nearest u.s. city. a child here in new york has now died of the flu. it's the second pediatric death in the united states this season and the flu season is just getting started. the cdc urges everyone 6 months and older to get the flu shot but officials say the number of people vaccinated last year actually dropped, which may explain a record number of children die. about 80% of those kids who died were not vaccinated. one person is dead after an amtrak train slammed into a dump

truck. the crash happened in suffolk, virginia. 60 passengers were on the train at the time. none of them was seriously hurt, and the train did not derail. it was heading from new york to norfolk, virginia. turning now to the weather, a storm is on the move heading from the deep south to the northeast just in time for the weekend. let's take a look at your friday forecast. good morning. we're tracking a nor'easter that will impact the east coast for these next couple of days, soaking rains first to the southeast then arriving to the northeast on saturday. this is going to cause a good bit of rain. we're talking 1 to 3 inches in major cities from d.c. all the way up into boston. also looking at high gusting winds. those gusts up to 60 miles per hour could cause coastal flooding. i'm meteorologist julia weiden with your accuweather forecast.

may soon be the subject of a federal criminal investigation. avenatti and his client, julie swetnick, accused then supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh of sexual misconduct during kavanaugh's confirmation hearing, but senate judiciary chairman chuck grassley is now asking the fbi to look into whether avenatti and swetnick conspired to mislead the committee. avenatti denies any wrongdoing saying he welcomes a complete investigation of swetnick's allegations. authorities at yosemite national park have recovered the bodies of a man and woman who fell to their deaths from taft point, a popular scenic outlook. the circumstances remain unclear, but it's the sixth death at the park this year. just last month a young hiker fell off another cliff in the park while trying to take a selfie. taft point is a popular location for marriage proposals. this couple's photo went viral earlier this week. a new warning for consumers in the market for a new car. the recent hurricanes and other extreme weather is producing a bumper crop of lemons being cleaned up and sent across the country.

the indycar driver involved in this horrific crash has now confirmed that the accident left him paralyzed. robert wickens' car was sent airborne before spinning across the pocono raceway back in august. the 29-year-old posted on instagram that he can no longer move from the waist down, but he's staying positive. he says his upper body is getting stronger every day. we turn now to the murder of a college student in utah who police say was gunned down by her ex-boyfriend, a sex offender. new questions are being raised about the warning signs that police missed. >> we've now learned the man was lurking on campus for days before the murder despite his troubled past. abc's clayton sandell has more. >> reporter: new questions about the system so many are saying failed a murdered college student. lauren mccluskey was on the phone with her mom monday night headed back to her dorm at the

university of utah. her mother says, suddenly i heard her yell, no, no, no. at that moment police say the 21-year-old track team standout was grabbed by her ex-boyfriend, 37-year-old melvin rowland. >> he forced her into the backseat of a car that he had driven to campus, and he shot her in the car multiple times. >> reporter: mccluskey dated rowland for a month but broke it off october 9th after discovering he lied about his name and age and was a registered sex offender. at a parole hearing he once said this -- >> every woman i've met or came across, i used my manipulation tactics to get what i wanted. >> reporter: on october 13th mccluskey told campus police rowland was blackmailing her for a thousand dollars threatening to expose explicit pictures of her online, but police revealing detectives didn't begin their investigation until a week later and never contacted rowland's parole officers who could have sent him back to prison.

>> i didn't believe there was enough evidence to share with other law enforcement. there was no indication from lauren to us at any point in this investigation that he was threatening physical harm. >> reporter: police say as they closed in on rowland, he ran into a church and killed himself. clayton sandell, abc news. tv host megyn kelly's future at nbc is up in the air as she faces backlash for defending the use of blackface for halloween. the network is expected to air a repeat of kelly's morning show again today. earlier this week she tearfully apologized for her comments, but many people weren't satisfied including her colleague al roker. kelly is reportedly planning to meet with nbc executives today after hiring a new attorney. she's the highest paid anchor at nbc with a reported three-year, $70 million contract. a police officer and some good samaritans are being hailed as heroes for rescuing two women trapped in a burning suv in new jersey. the vehicle caught fire after driving off the road slamming into a tree. the police officer, anthony torres, and other drivers ran to the burning wreck and tried to

pry open the doors, but they were jammed. so they pulled the two women out of the window. moments later the entire vehicle burst into flames, as you can see there. a police official says there's no doubt the group saved those women's lives. well, how about this big surprise at a goodwill store in new jersey. look what showed up in some donated items. it's a newspaper from 1774. it's "the pennsylvania journal and weekly advertiser." it includes an article signed by john hancock urging the colonies to fight back against enemies trying to divide them. that paper is worth about $16,000. the store plans to sell it to pay for job training services. let's hope your morning commute doesn't involve something like this. look. that is a giant spool of what looks like flexible piping rolling down a highway in houston. yikes. it eventually came to a stop on its own. obviously a huge problem for drivers, but thankfully no one was hurt.
