zoom forward at the volume here. let's go back to sky 7. i saw some activity with big rigs pulled over on the right-hand shoulder. only right lanes are getting by. solid backup to highway 84 for about an hour from dublin/pleasanton towards vargas. avoid the area. take 580 to 880. or get off at 84 to 238. not great alternates. we are hoping another 30 minutes this should be reopened at south 680 over sunol grade. all right. you're never more than 7 minutes away from my accuweather forecast. i overlaid the winds. you can see they are light and variable. we have fog along the coast. trying to push onto the peninsula and the north bay valleys. upper 60s to mid-70s at noon.

70s and 80s around the bay for one of our warmest day this week. so we have cooler weather on the way and a chance of sprinkles. that's coming up. breaking news now. federal officials have intercepted at least two more suspicious packages. >> here's a live look from new york city. this is midtown manhattan. according to preliminary information from abc 7 news, nypd received a call for a suspicious package at a post office on west 52nd street in manhattan at 8:14 new york time this morning. sources say two packages were recovered. one addressed to former director of national intelligence james clapper. the other two new jersey senator cory booker. earlier we told you a package to booker was, tphaeurin addition , recovered in florida. so that's two september to booker. -- sent to booker. there have been at least 13 suspected mail bombs. sources tell abc news the feds

have traced the source of the packages to a postal facility in opa-locka, florida. that is near miami. there was a square at senator dianne feinstein's office in los angeles last night. a suspicious package there appears to be a false alarm. congressional democrats from the bay area are on edge in light of the suspected mail bombs. cameras screen incoming mail and flyers remind staff how to identify a suspicious package. >> you have to put all the mail through a machine to make sure there is nothing suspicious about it. and now we are worried about things at your place of residence. >> i think we're all on edge. and it almost creates an environment where you don't feel you can speak truth to power for fear you will receive a package the next day. >> democrats and republicans say this should not have an impact on the midterm election. they believe most voters are already made up their minds. bart says it has no specific

threats but it is stepping up security in response to pipe bombs. extra officers and canine units were patrolling the civic center station. a major arrest on the peninsula. san mateo police have someone posing as a ride hail driver and sexually assaulting women. >> reporter: reggie and alexis, good morning. an arrest has been made. but they say their investigation isn't over. 40-year-old brandon sherman of san jose. he is accused of kidnapping is and raping a woman over the summer. after posing as a ride-hail driver. the victim says he picked her up near highway 82, drive her to a she excluded area and assaulted her. she was able to escape and called 911. he was suspended the day before by uber. he was also a driver for lyft. detectives say they could have moved faster in the case if the

ride-hailing companies were more cooperative during the investigation. now they are focused on identifying other victims. >> you know, i'm hoping that we caught him in time. we want to get that information out to as many different people as possible to let them know if they had an experience with this individual and they believe they are a victim, we want them to come forward. >> police want to remind passengers to match the license plate on the car to the license plate on the app. again, anyone with any information to contact san mateo police. >> thank you. new develops in the cleanup of the hunters point ship yard. the united states government is joining a lawsuit against the navy contractor accused of fraud. the lawsuit claims the contractor tet extra tech put lives at risk by falsifying results from contaminated soil samples. they turned out to be toxic remnants of the old nuclear warfare research lab. they found the radioactive

contamination could be more widespread than first thought. >> vacaville police hope someone can help to identify these suspects after an unprovoked attack on october 11th. they walked to a victim outside the walmart and threw the man on the ground. they punched the victim in the head and kicked him. witnesses disrupted the attack and the three suspects took off in a saturn ion. the victim is recovering. if you have any information call vacaville police. take a look here at this van door. it is actually the front door of a couple's home. it is helping them beat the high cost of bay area living. they are spending 300 bucks on a van and living in it in san francisco. >> we are highlighting them as part of our initiative called building a better bay area. looking at possible solutions to some of the big issues we face like high housing costs. paris and lavelle lee are navy veterans. we face like high housing costs. they used to pay $2300 a month for an apartment in l.a. when they decided to move to san francisco for school, they knew

side and sunset. 57, excelsior. chrissy tarting too clouds and fog move in from the coast. expect that to continue the next two to three hours. low to mid-50s around the bay shore. upper 40s in santa clara, saratoga, pleasanton. 54 in american canyon. a look at santa cruz. think about going to the beach today. lighter breezes. 78 here the warmest spot. around the bay very serene this afternoon. plates like the peninsula jumping from 54 to 68. mid to upper 70s this afternoon. 63 during the evening hours. some of our warmest weather, low to mid-80s in the east bay valleys after starting off in the 50s. we'll take an hour by hour look at the chance of rain in the accuweather 7-day forecast. here's sue with your morning commute. >> back to the sunol grade with sky 7 live over the scene of the

accident. i'm not seeing an overturn blocking the left lanes, but there is a caltrans truck with debris, nails, and tools, some sort of tools in the roadway. you can see the big rigs off to the right-hand shoulder. they're not blocking a lane, but they have flares out for two left lanes southbound near vargas. they are picking the nails up, it looks like. another 15 to 20 minutes. hopefully they will get this reopened. backup is beyond highway 84. avoid the area if you can. they are hoping 6:30 is the estimated time of opening. alternate would be to take 84, niles canyon, towards 238 or stay on 580 to 880. we'll check back in just a few. >> thank you, sue. lime is helping you get to the polls to vote in november. offering free rides to polling centers on election day. they say transportation can be a challenge for some americans, so they are doing their part to help. rides will be free to and from

redwood city. everybody else 67 to 76 degrees. ancisco, dnan cisc a g gate, sausalito. mid-60s along the north bay coast. 15 to 20 colder in the valleys. low to mid-80s. east bay shore, some of our more comfortable temperatures. mid to upper 70s to hercules, castro valley, fremont. 80 there. east bay valleys, low to mid-80s here. tonight you can see a little more cloud cover along the coast, north bay valleys, and throughout the bay. milder this morning. 57 degrees in places like san mateo, half moon bay, fremont, san jose. here's a look at the cold front and the rain that will push down to ukiah 7:00 sunday morning. then it just falls apart by 10:00. so we will see increasing sunshine and increasing breezes. that will bring temperatures

lights and very slow-moving cars. we're crawling along here on southbound 680. we have been stuck in this for about 30 minutes. we probably haven't gone a mile or two. we're not making a lot of progress. it is very slow right now. i want to give you a bird's-eye view of sky 7. you can see the backup that we are stuck in and get a sense of how many people we're joined by here on the highway. i did just get a briefing from the chp. sue, i think you touched on it. they were hoping to get a rough estimated time was going to be 6:30. they are waiting for a sweeper right now to sweep the street. we had heard tools spilled onto the road out of the pickup truck involved in this accident. that's a good sign if they're waiting for the sweeper. that signals that everything else has been taken care of, including their investigation. and the towing, that's what the chp officer made it sound like to me when i just talked to him.

if you can avoid the area, i highly recommend it. if you're headed towards fremont, which is what we are doing right now, you will have a long delay. avoid this area if you can. i'll glow it back to you in the studio. >> do as she says, not as she does. thank you. we have breaking news on the wave of pipe bombs sent to prominent critics of president trump. there was a call at a post office on west 52nd street in manhattan. new video into our abc 7 newsroom. incident was addressed to former director of national intelligence james clapper. nypd initially said two packages were found there. they have since corrected it. they say it is just one package.

a package addressed to new jersey senator cory booker was recovered in opa-locka, florida this morning. investigators tell ac news it is believed other packages may have moved through that facility. other recipients including actor robert de niro, former vice president joe biden. all are critics of the president. law enforcement is not speculating a motive or whether politics are involved. be the first to know about any new developments in the suspicious package threat with our abc 7 news app. we have been sending you push alerts. in the east bay, one of the men charged in the "ghost ship" fire is working to get his plea deal back.

derrick almena does not want to go to trial. he wants to accept a plea deal from the judge that includes a nine-year sentence. he didn't think almena showed remorse and rejected the deal. almena was renting the warehouse and converted it into a live and work space. there have a concert on the second floor the night of the fire. co-defendant max harris has decided to go to trial. his attorney wants to ask for a change of venue if he goes to trial. fairfield police are investigating a domestic violence case after a car chase with a baby inside ended in gunfire and a death. this happened while a woman was screaming for help from inside a car. officers tried to pull the driver over. when the car then sped off, crashing a short time later near dover and east travis boulevard.

police say the 24-year-old female was shouting at app officer through the window claiming she had been kidnapped. crews pulled the woman out and then a 10-month-old baby. >> i was so shocked there was even a baby. i was like oh, my god. and the baby was crying. >> the baby was passed around from firefighter to firefighter. >> police say the baby was not hurt in the crash. >> google is doing damage control in response to a "new york times" already that gave lucrative exit packages to executives accused of sexual harassment. the ceo sent a note to employees that reads in part, in the last two years, 48 people have been terminated for sexual harass many, including 13 who were senior managers and above. none of these people received an exit package. congresswoman jackie speier held a panel discussion in san mateo

about overcoming sexual trauma >> i'm hoping that the ceo is going to take a strong public stand about this issue. and make sure zero tolerance is indeed not just words but actions. >> the e-mail says google has made a number of changes in recent years and that the company reviews every complaint about inappropriate contact. bart approved a plan to get commuters where they need to go. starting in february, trains will begin running one hour later at 5:00 a.m. because of e examiner reports last the bart board of directors approved $3 million in funding annually for three years to provide a shuttle bus as replacement. a variety of transit agencies from ac transit, muni will ferry morning commuters from the east bay through downtown san francisco and into the mission district. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area.

we're putting more time and resources into issues that affect your quality of life. >> the city of san jose announced a plan that caught our attention, paying homeless people to help clean up parks. the mayor says the city will fund the jobs with a $200,000 grant. it will start at $15 an hour. more than 25 homeless individuals will be hired to clean up 40 litter hotspot areas in the city where trash has been a problem. >> we need to change the narrative from one in which we dismiss or blame the homeless as part of the problem to one where we embrace oren gauge our homeless residents in part of the solution. >> city officials say the program is a chance for the homeless to build their skills as they try to get back on their feet and into the workforce. >> it feels like more of us could be like this guy. taking cleanliness into our own hands. there he is with his broom and dust pan cleaning up the tkpwurlt on broadway and taylor streets earlier this week in san francisco. a good reminder that they have

it appears corporate calf tear yas will be allowed to stay in san francisco. the city's planning commission voted against recommending a ban on new corporate calf tear yas. many companies attract employees by offering free cafeteria food. people who support a cafeteria ban said it would encourage workers to support local restaurants during lunch. land use and transportation committee still needs to review the proposal. >> we have a food pantry upstairs. i found out we have to pay for that. >> yes, we do. >> so there's that. san mateo police have someone in custody who posed as a ride hail driver and sexually assaulted a woman. >> reporter: one suspect is in custody. but their investigation isn't over. 40-year-old brendan sherman of san jose was arrested yesterday during a routine traffic stop. he is were expected of kidnapping and raping a woman
