5:00 pm
peninsula. and in sacramento. >> good evening. it's been a hectic day for federal and local officials coast to coast. >> all of the focus on the case now centers around this man. 56 year-old cesar sayoc. of florida. authorities took him into custody 30 miles north of miami. linking through fingerprint and possible dna ed to the devices send to prominent democrats and liberal activists in new york, washington d.c., florida, los angeles and here in northern california. >> we have team coverage on the packages found. and we found in the capitol. >> right about the same time they were making that arrest at the suspect in south florida, here in south sacramento. an alert postal worker spotted a package. that didn't look right. it also looked too much like the others sent to individuals around the country.
5:01 pm
>> i will confirm that the package was addressed to senator harris. >> six hours after a postal worker discovered a suspicious package. addressed to u.s. senator harris. the fbi confirmed. the device was similar to a dozen others sent to prominent democrats and cnn. >> rendered safe and we will be analyzing the actual device itself. the package. and determine what kind of condition it was in. >> it could have been dangerous. >> shown here from sky 7 a sacramento county sheriff bomb squad. working with the fbi. to render the device safe. with the help of at least one robot in the rear parking lot of the colonial station post office in south sacramento. >> we have determined this device was in fact a legit device. and the federal bureau of investigation has taken over the investigation. >> we're asking everybody to either stay inside. or not set up right here.
5:02 pm
>> police and officials went door to door in the neighborhood closest to the post office asking residents to shelter in place. >> that's nuts. >> they're sick. i don't know what they're getting out of it. >> the device will likely be sent to the fbi lab in quantico, virginia for further analysis. there could be more. >> that's a concern. there maybe other packages. >> now this afternoon officials here did confirm that the package was addressed to senator harris. with an unspecified sacramento address. we know that the senator has a field office in sacramento. while it didn't make it there, officials are looking at where that package traveled in the postal system. before it made it to this facility. in south sacramento. >> okay. thank you. senator harris is in atlanta tonight speaking at a campaign
5:03 pm
event for georgia gubernatorial candidate. after the event she addressed the suspicious package. >> thankful to law enforcement. and the postal service folks for being professional. and diligent. and thankfully nobody was hurt. i strongly believe that america has so much more in common. and really leadership can bring people together. and not separate them. >> senator harris has been one of the most out spoken democrats against the president. and his agenda. rumored to be preparing for a presidential run in 2020. >> federal agents swarm a facility in burling game. after a suspicious package was found there. it was addressed to san francisco billionaire tom steyer. a vocal opponent of trump. that facility is located on rollens road. near sfo. >> live from near the airport. >> right now we are hearing from law enforcement. they are saying that the
5:04 pm
envelope addressed to steyer is from the same alleged bomber. now this could mean the packaging is the same perhaps the same handwriting. and also today i'll tell you the device found was x-rayed at the police gun range. where we are behind. after it was transported from the postal service building. now once it got to the destination, two explosive technicians handled the device which was inside a white box. now the fbi has confirmed in their words the device was rendered safe. and this means basically that it was neutralized. so they could handle it safely. now the package was x-rayed by using a screen and machine. to make sure that it is safe to handle and see what it's made of. the parts and inside.
5:05 pm
this has been done with the other devices found earlier in the week. now this is what former bomb technician told me about the importance of preserving the device. >> why would you want to preserve it? >> evidence. to find the bomber. something that may lead back to the bomber. purchase of a particular type of battery. or whatever it maybe. >> now this is the moment as we see when the device was taken away. three vehicles. notice it was in a closed pickup truck not inside a bomb squad vehicle. this tells us that it was neutralized and can be handled safely. so what happens now, just like she was telling us. just like the bomb the device found in sacramento this one found will be taken to the fbi training academy in virginia. to be analyzed.
5:06 pm
>> okay. thanks. as she mentioned workers found the package at the postal service facility in burling game. live right now with more on this discovery and how it affected workers there. >> late this afternoon the yellow tape came down. employees have since been allowed back in. it appears to be business as usual. earlier today a much different scene. >> reporter: training and experience. paid off after a postal service employee discovered a suspicious package sent to tom steyer. >> spokesperson for the postal service says the device was found this morning. after a letter carriers had already left on daily routes. all employees had been told to be on the lookout.
5:07 pm
>> they were given the dimensions and what to look for. anything suspicious. >> the facility processes smaller packages between 5 and 25 pounds in weight. mail from all over the worl. as well as out going packages from the bay area. multiple agencies were on scene this afternoon including atf. inspectors office and police. democratic congresswoman spear represents california 14th congressional district where the facility is located. >> any one of the bombs if they had been properly designed could have gone off. in the hand of one of the postal service people. >> approximately 25 employees were inside the building when the package was found and had to be evacuated. >> the immediately identify the situation. and did what they were trained to do. don't touch it, move away. notify somebody and get out. >> officials here again applauding their employees for the work they did in preventing what could have been a tragedy.
5:08 pm
>> thank you. tom steyer has become the number one democratic donor. he spent nearly $20 million of his money to support liberal candidates and issues this election year. on top of the $100 million in 2016. and $70 million in 2014. the retired hedge fund manager turned activist sat down with us on several occasions to talk about his mission. >> he's brought us to the brink of nuclear war. obstructed justice. >> tom steyer political profile has been rising along with criticism of trump. the billionaire funds the need to impeach campaign. in a tweet last year, trump called him whacky and unhinged. steyer sat down with us in 2016 before the presidential election. to explain why the antitrump ads. >> when every one of the ads we were appealing specifically to people. take a look at what happens if you don't vote. >> steyer says trump wouldn't
5:09 pm
have protected issues dear to his heart. environment. voter access and inclusiveness. he stepped up attacks after the mueller investigation began. and stopped by the studio this past april. >> we know mr. trump will do more wreckless lawless activity. we know that. do we know what it is? no. this is a president who is a danger to the american people. >> analysts speculated he was going to run for governor or senate in 2018. he didn't. now many are asking the question we asked him about 2020. >> have yo ruled out running for president? >> let many say this. i was saying a couple minutes ago how much trouble the democratic party is in. we are in crisis. and november 6 which is election day, we are absolutely head down until november 6. we don't know what's going to happen. >> reading between the lines.
5:10 pm
in other words stay tuned. more to come after the midterms. >> all right. he leased a statement today. on becoming a target. quote -- keep in mind there are at least 14 bombs so far. the fbi is cautioning there could be more out there. when you listen to investigators they had plenty of evidence to work with. one package discovered wednesday in l.a. provided the break the fbi needed to track down the suspect. >> they uncovered a fingerprint. from one of the envelopes containing an ied sent to congresswoman waters. we have confirmed this fingerprint is that of cesar sayoc. >> the fbi says dna linked the

56 year-old to at least two other packages. he faces 5 federal charges. and going to make his first court apeerps on monday in florida. the charges will pile up. he could spend 48 years prison if convicted. >> president applauded. but also tweeted this. he says it's quote unfortunate what it going on. republicans go out and vote. >> a later in the day the president acknowledged that the suspect arrested today is a supporter of his. but the president told reporters as he left for rally in north carolina that there's no blame referring to himself. california senator feinstein however is criticizing the president for not giving credit to the fbi for cracking lt case. we caught up with her during a campaign stop. >> reporter: on the trail running for her sixth term. senator feinstein told us that
5:12 pm
she is told her staff to be vigilant about packages at her office. a suspicious parcel thursday at her l.a. office turned out not to be a bomb. she's no stranger to terrorist attacks. in the 70s a bomb was planted at her then san francisco home. the bomb didn't go off. in light of the arrest. the 56 year-old suspect arrested for the string of mail explosives. feinstein is hopeful trump will tone down comments at political rallies that may have influenced sayoc. >> presidents should bring people together. and de-emphasize differences and enable people to work together. be friends together. work for the goodness of the nation. together. and not separate them. >> feinstein objected to the president not giving the fbi credit by name for tracking down the suspect wanted for sending the devices this week. >> he's maligned the fbi. so much.
5:13 pm
and yet i just heard him say to all law enforcement good work. he couldn't say fbi. this was done in whatever it is four or five days. congratulations. >> feinstein told agriculture workers at the facility that she's working on a revised immigration bill. that will allow them to work and provide a bath path to residency. we were sending out push alerts all morning through the news app. as news of the suspects arrest was announced and explosive packages were found here in northern california. >> down load the app and enable the push alerts. >> other news. a big convention under way right now in san jose. >> we'll take you to twitch con. a celebration of the hottest thing inspect gaming world.
