right here in northern california. tonight we have live team coverage of this nationwide investigation. >> there may be other packages. we don't know. >> they just don't know. the possibility of danger persists. we are making sure you know what to watch out for. plus, see what the "ab the b news" i-team's dan noyes dug up about the suspect in this case. >> live breaking news. >> we have arrested cesar sayoc in connection with this investigation. >> i saw him get in with no problem. he just had a look of, okay, it is over. >> a south florida man is accused of sending numerous pipe bomb packages to prominent democrats including one here in the bay area. the arrest, drawing a sharp reaction. >> these acts are despicable and have no place in our society. >> investigators say it was a fingerprint and dna evidence that led them to their suspect. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. four more devices were found today, bringing the total to 14.

two showed up in northern california, one in sacramento addressed to senator kamala harris, the other in burlingame sent to billionaire activist tom styer. >> a package was sent to new jersey senator cory booker. responded with a die fient tweet saying terror will never silence or intimidate americans. >> also receiving a package, james clapper, former director of national intelligence. >> president trump weighed in briefly this evening during a rally in north carolina, thanking law enforcement for their work in this case. earlier in the day he called the pipe bomb packages despicable but did not place blame. we can tell you that the suspect is 56-year-old cesar sayoc. he was arrested about 30 miles north of miami this morning and is due in court on monday. investigators took his van covered in stickers, many supporting president trump. >> the fbi says there could be more of the packages out there, they just don't know. all of them are crude pipe bombs made with pvc and each uses florida congress woman debbie

wasserman schultz address as the return address. >> one was discovered at the burlingame post office on rollins road. >> "abc 7 news" was at the post office when the caravan with the package departed. we tracked the progress from the air as it went from burlingame roughly 15 mills to the location near sfo. less than an hour ago we caught up with tom styer in san francisco to ask his reaction. >> grateful to the police and post office for doing a great job. very grateful for them keeping everybody safe and apprehending the suspect so quickly. i think they deserve a lot of credit. >> "abc 7 news" reporter lyanne melendez begins tonight's team coverage with a look at what happened to the package with styer's name on it. lyanne. >> reporter: law enforcement acted quickly to remove the package and the fbi has confirmed that the device found here in burlingame is linked to the others found earlier in the

week. the suspicious device was taken from this postalerce buding in burlingame in a caravan led by several law enforcement agencies. from above you see it traveling a few miles to the police gun range behind sfo. once it got to its destination, two explosive technicians handled the device which was inside a white box. the fbi has confirmed that in their words the device was rendered safe, which means it was neutralized. the package was then x-rayed. this is done to make sure it is safe to handle and to see what it is made of. this has also been done with the other devices found earlier in the week. former bomb technician don hanson told us why it is important to preserve the device. why what you want to preserve it? >> evidence. >> reporter: in this case? >> evidence to find the bomber. something that may lead back to the bomber.

purchase of a particular type of battery or whatever it may be, you know, the case may be. >> reporter: from here, the device will be transported to the fbi training academy in virginia to be analyzed. and while this was going on here at the police firing range, flights coming in and out of san francisco sfo were never interrupted. in south san francisco, lyanne melendez. "abc 7 news." >> remarkable work, lyanne. thank you. the u.s. postal service has been on high alert all week and in burlingame the employees did the right thing. >> they immediately identified the situation and did what they were trained to do, don't touch it, move away, notify somebody and get out. >> this burlingame facility processes smaller packages between five and 25 pounds. that includes mail coming in from all over the world as well as outgoing packages from the bay area. it sits in the district represented by congresswoman jackie speier. >> imagine if one of these bombs had gone off.

imagine how much turmoil it would have created in this country, how unsafe so many people would have felt. >> safety was the top concern in sacramento after a package addressed to california senator kamala harris was found about 7:30 this morning at a post office. >> the building was cordoned off and bomb technicians from various agencies were brought in. senator harris is in jo jaw today. >> she spoke with reporters shortly after a speech at spelman college in atlanta. >> powerful forces, and they have been sowing hate and division among us and it is wrong. it is unhealthy for us as a country. >> senator harris is rumored to be preparing for a presidential run in 2020. laura anthony is live from sacramento with more on the investigation into the package targeting harris. laura. >> reporter: well, hi, dan. we are at this postal facility where the package was found. it is business as usual. now for the past several hours we have seen trucks coming and

going. earlier today though, the entire area was surrounded by yellow crime scene type. there were multiple agencies, bomb squads taking their time, taking no chances. >> i will confirm that the package was addressed to senator harris. >> reporter: six hours after a postal worker discovered a suspicious package addressed to u.s. senator kamala harris, the fbi confirmed the device was similar to a dozen others sent to prominent democrats and to cnn. >> we do believe that the package is related analyzing evidence and then providing those results back to our new york office. >> we have now rendered the device safe. >> reporter: shown here from sky 7 a sacramento sheriff's bomb squad worked with the fbi, atf and u.s. postal service to render the desafe with the help of at least one robot in the

rear parking lot of the colonial station post office in south sacramento. >> we have determined this device was a legitimate device and the federal bureau of investigations has taken over the investigation. >> we are asking everybody to either stay indoors or not set up right here at all. >> reporter: police and fbi officials went door-to-door in the neighborhood closest to the post office, asking residents to shelter in place. >> i don't know what it means. it is really a cowardly act i think. >> whether you agree or disagree with somebody's personal politics is -- this is not the answer. an act of terrorism is what it is. this is not the answer. >> reporter: while the device found in south sacramento likely will be sent to the fbi lab in quantico, virginia for further analysis, officials here warn there could still be more. >> that's a concern of ours, that there may be other packages. >> reporter: now, the fbi could not tell us this afternoon if that device was completely destroyed or if it was still

intact after it was rendered safe, the terminology they use. they were certain though it was part of the nationwide series and it was definitely serious. in south sacramento, laura anthony, "abc 7 news". >> thank you, laura. and the man suspected of mailing these explosives is 56-year-old cesar sayoc. he was arrested this morning, charged with five federal crimes and faces 48 years in prison if convicted. >> now, the i-team's dan noyes has been digging into sayoc's background. dan is here now. what have you found? >> dan and ama, investigators say cesar sayoc left a trail of evidence in the ieds he sent, fingerprints and dna and also on social media and there were warning signs in his criminal record. sayoc was very active on social media in the days and weeks before his arrest. >> understand, you take a look at these people. >> reporter: he posted videos on social media that appeared to show him at president trump rallies. this one was posted on facebook in june.

his twitter page lists him as a former professional soccer player, wrestler and cage fighter. he was vocal in support of president trump and republicans, posting red tsunami is coming, slamming ffl over the national anthem controversy. we know in 2014 he was road manager for traveling exotic male review shows. responsibilities include sale of merchandise, coordinating bookings. in a 2012 bankruptcy sayoc filed a petition saying he lives with mom, has no furniture. before today he had eight arrests in florida from giving false information to grand theft auto. in 2002 he pleaded guilty and got probation for threatening to discharge a destructive device. the arrest record says sayoc called florida power & light and threatened to blow up fpl and that it would be worse than september 11th. in 1994 he was accused of domestic violence. the record says the case was disposed by the judge. no question his criminal record helped investigators make an arrest much more quickly,

the u.s. department of justice plans to take over three lawsuits against navy contractor tetra tech. this suits claim tetra tech put lives at risk by falsifying results from contaminated soil samples taken at san francisco's hunters point shipyard. they turned out to be toxic remnants of the old nuclear research lab. last week it was found that the radioactive contamination could be more widespread than first thought. to the east bay now. an estranged husband accused of kidnapping his child and shooting a family member was shot and killed by police in pittsburgh on monday as we reported. today the body camera was released and let me warn you that the video is disturbing.

police tell "abc 7 news" they're releasing the video in the interest of transparency. >> drop the weapon! >> the man was identified as 37-year-old salvador morales of pittsburgh. after a standoff at a house he allegedly walked outside against instructions and armed with a handgun. police say they used a non-lethal round, but when he returned fire they shot back. as warmer weather returns this weekend, so do concerns about wildfires, especially in the north bay. today one of the neighborhoods that lost the most in last year's wildfires reached a milestone. more than one actually. "abc 7 news" reporter wayne freedman brings us the story from santanes happen here almost every day. for dennis glenn and his wife marilyn, here is one in the rebuilding of the larkfield estates home. they lived here almost five decades. >> we are finally making progress after a year. >> reporter: this these parts, pg&e measures progress by the number of high-voltage lines

cleared from trees. in coffey park, another milestone today as pg&e finished nearly seven months of work, replacing underground electrical and gas lines. >> we trend 17 miles but laid 22 miles of electric line and ten miles of new gas main. >> reporter: that would be every house here. back in larkfield estates though, residents cannot say the same. note the power poles on biton court. >> would you rather see it underground? >> yes. >> reporter: but it won't happen for these homes even though pg&e undergrounded in this neighborhood and finished early. it is frustrating to contractor and homeowner darryl chandler. >> we are being made to build state-of-the-art home and pg&e came and left the old poles because they can. >> reporter: there is a reason. those homes on brighton court predate the rest of larkfield estates. they were built under a different set of codes. pg&e says it is following a predetermined policy.

at pacifica. here is a bug-free view from the exploratorium camera at pier 57. it is 71 degrees right now in santa rosa. napa, 70. 73, novato. the view from emeryville of the setting sun. boy, what a sky. these are the forecast features. slightly cooler tomorrow by a couple of degrees, with further cooling on sunday and monday and then it warms up rather significantly again. the middle of next week, almost summer like. here is a look at the overnight conditions with forecast animation. starting at 7:00 p.m., fog pushing locally over the bay. beginning the day with low clouds and fog near the bay. it will burn back and give us a sani day by the afternoon with a few passing clouds, but then the low clouds surge across the bay and inland late tomorrow night. that will be pretty much the picture early sunday morning. overnight, this night, look for mainly clear skies inland with

maybe a little patchy fog locally. more than just patchy fog over the bay, and certainly more along the coastline. overnight lows will be generally in the low to mid 50s, but in the north bay valleys upper 50s. so cooler there. 76 in san jose. up to about 80 in morgan hill. on the pen instance raw, we will see hazy sunshine from time to time, but bright skies all day. high temperatures from 73 in brentwood city to 74 in palo alto and mountain view. foggy at the coast with highs in the low to mid 60s. in the north bay bay look for 76 in santa rosa and petaluma and sonoma. novato will be up to about 77 degrees, one degree warmer. in the east bay, 76 will be the high in oakland. 74, fremont. in the inland east bay, highs in the upper 70s to about 80 at livermore.

early voting centers are opening up in santa clara county this weekend. the election is 11 days away, and starting tomorrow there will be seven places where you can cast a ballot. verify your voter registration or request a replacement ballot. if you missed the deadline to register to vote you can do something called conditional voter registration. what it means is that you will be able to cast a ballot in the election and it will be counted after your registration is verified. to learn about what is on your ballot, the issues and candidates where you live, go to abc7news.com/election. once you are there, you can find a voter guide to all of the

people and propositions that are on your local ballot. now, california leadership is challenging the trump administration's proposal to dial back car emission standards. at the state capital today, governor brown demanded national clean car standards to be kept in place. the obama-era rules limit emissions and require fuel efficiency of 54 miles per gallon by the year 2025. brown says the standards combat climate change and keep the air clean and this rollback would hinder that. >> this trump administration attack on innovative vehicle technology jeopardizes the health of millions and will cost billions at the pump. wrong way to go. wrong way to go, donald. >> 21 state attorneys general, san francisco and oakland also supported keeping the standards in place. the trump administration argues that rolling them back will make cars less expensive and will boost production.

b.a.r.t has found the money to nearly double the number of parking spaces at its newest station the antioch. it opened in may and ridership surpassed b.a.r.t's forecast. the current parking lot has about 1,000 spaces. 800 more will be added at a cost of roughly $16 million. the new lot is still in the planning phase and probably won't open for another two years. well, coming up next at 6:30, new details about those series of suspicious packages. two of them now have reached northern california. >> recipients include a lot of high-profile democrats, but some like senator dianne feinstein haven't been targeted. you will hear from her next. >> we will dig into the background of billionaire tom steyer and how his mission may have made him a target. families learn more about their fate. i

cesar sayoc, is due to make his first court appearance on monday in florida. >> abc news reporter maggie rulli explains how the fbi tracked him down. >> reporter: this is the man police believe terrorized the country this week, mailing anonymous explosives to prominent democrats. >> signal 46, suspect on his own. >> reporter: witnesses say he was in line buying parts when agents rushed in. >> he wasn't yelling, screaming or flailing. he was in handcuffs and calmly was escorted to the vehicle. >> reporter: police say this white van belonged to the suspect, its windows covered with hard-to-miss stickers. >> the defendant faces up to 58 years in prison. >> reporter: attorney general jeff sessions and director of the fbi christoher wray, part of a high-profile press conference, praising the nationwide manhunt to find this attempted bomber. >> a threat of this scope and of this magnitude requires all of us working shoulder to shoulder.

>> reporter: the president, who earlier tweeted that this, quote, bomb stuff was hurting republicans before mid terms, now calling it despicable. >> we must never allow political violence to take root in america. >> reporter: today more packages were discovered even after sayoc was taken into custody. authorities warn the threat remains. >> today's arrest doesn't mean we're all out of the woods. there may be other packages in transit now. >> reporter: court documents reveal investigators found sayoc through fingerprints on the packages and items inside. they also say some of the packages had photos of the intended targets with red circle slashes on their faces. the department of justice believes they found a social media account belonging to the suspect. they say it contains right wing content and aggressive attacks on liberals including mentioning some of the people who received packages with the words, see you soon. maggie rulli, abc news, new york. >> and some prominent democrats

have not received these packages like senator dianne feinstein. "abc 7 news" reporter david louie tracked her down at an event in watsonville today to ask her about her concerns. >> reporter: during a campaign event at a monterey county mushroom grower, senator feinstein told "abc 7 news" she and her staff are on the alert after a string of devices delivered to other democrats. a device intercepted at her los angeles office thursday turned out not to be a bomb. she knows what it is like to be target. >> feinstein is no stranger to terrorist attacks. in the '70s, a bomb was planted at her then-san francisco home by a group tied to the new world liberation front. the bomb did not go off. >> reporter: she expressed a hope president trump will tone down his comments at political rallies that may be fanning flames and inciting supporters to do something drastic. >> presidents should bring people together. presidents should deemphasize differences, enable people to work together, be friends together, work for the goodness of this nation together, and not

separate them. >> reporter: the fbi and other agencies were able to identify and arrest 56-year-old cesar sayoc in connection with the 13 devices delivered so far. however, feinstein noticed how president trump in announcing the arrest did not credit the fbi by name. >> he has maligned the fbi so much and yet i just heard him say to all law enforcement, good work. he couldn't say, fbi, you know, this was done in whatever it is, four, five days, congratulations. >> reporter: feinstein told agriculture worker at the monterey mushroom facility near watsonville she is working on a revised immigration bill that would allow them to stay and work if they've been in the u.s. two years, worked at least 100 hours, they have clean records. it could also lead to permanent residency. in monterey county, david louie, "abc 7 news." tom steyer has become the nation's number one democratic donor. he spent nearly $20 million of his own money to support liberal candidates and issues this

election year. that's on top of the 100 million he spent in 2016 and 70 million in 2014. the retired hedge fund manager turned activist has sat down with "abc 7 news" anchor kristen sze on several occasions to talk about his mission. >> he's brought us to the brink of nuclear war, obstructed justice at the fbi. >> reporter: tom steyer's political profile has been rising along with his criticism of president trump. the billionaire funds the need to impeach campaign for which he has become one of the president's political targets. in a tweet last year mr. trump called him wacky and totally unhinged tom steyer. steier sa steyer sat down with us in 2016 before the election to explain the anti-trump ads. >> in those ads woe were appealing to people, take a look at what happens if you don't vote. >> reporter: he stepped up his

another big story we have been talking about, dozens of families whose nearly-completed condos were destroyed in a massive fire in west oakland just three days ago are beginning to get answers. >> that's right. "7 on your side's" michael finney has been looking into their options since day one and he is here with the latest. >> perhaps the worst part for these families has been not knowing, not knowing if they would ever move into their new homes and not knowing if their contracts would be honored. for some, that uncertainty has now been cleared up. david hand looks over the destruction on the land he so desperately wants to call home. crews are demolishing the skeleton that remains standing of his house. this while investigators from atf sift through the ruins looking for crews. david had been looking forward to moving into his first home in march along with his wife che and baby due that same month. >> for a first-time home buyer, this kind of represents we put everything that we have into

buying a home, and to see someone, some random person come and destroy it is hurtful. >> reporter: arson is suspected. investigators have not yet confirmed a cause. like so many other families who put down deposits, david is desperate for answers. today the developer, city ventures, assured him it would meet with him to discuss his options within seven days. >> it does give me a little bit more comfort. >> matthew kaminsky and his wife expected to move into their home at ice house around christmas. their first home was one of many milestones they had planned for this year. >> we just got married recently. we were very, very excited to reach this milestone this year again. now we are kind of starting everything back from the ground, and it is very, very upsetting. >> they were one of at least ten families the developer met with today to discuss their options. construction will begin on six buildings on the back end of the project on monday. families who had already

purchased units can move into these new units as early as june. for those who don't want to wait, they can receive a 10% discount to move to another nearby city ventures development, station house south, by february. those families who choose to stay at the condo they bought can expect up to about a nine-month delay. families who want to leave will be let out of their contract. >> obviously we respect their decision if they would like to move on. >> reporter: he promised his team would meet soon with each individual homeowner by november 9th. matthew and chrisland say despite the setback they plan to say. >> we have been struggling i would say for years to be able to make this happen. >> but we are committed. >> we are committed to stay. >> the two families we talked with put a positives ranging from 3% to 10% to reserve their condo. >> that is tough. >> certainly is. thank you, michael. >> sure. do you have a meetiga hango?

new developments tonight on the engagement ring stolen from a see leandro couple. police tell us 51-year-old karen cotton was arrested and charged today with the theft. investigators say video showed cotton draping her jacket over a bag containing the couple's ring

>> the fact it is the 100th game, i can't tell you what it means to the chunt. >> reporter: it is not just any game. it is the 100th playing of what is officially called the big little game. antioch high principal still has the helmet he wore in three of the matchups in the '70s. he says it becomes part of your dna. >> i was talking to you and he said, you're from pittsburg. i said, what year did you graduate, did you beat antioch. >> reporter: the coach shows me pictures from the game from the '50s although the game dates back to 1924. if you are worried about the math adding up, in some years they played twice. pittsburg won the last two games and currently holds the big little game trophy. the pirates have won 65 games with seven times. that entitles pittsburg with swagger and some great memories. >> just playing against them one last time, it will be memorable for me. >> reporter: antioch has a better record this year and a

bay backyard. one police sergeant tells us it is something he has never seen before. >> finally tonight, a few shots about what really matters. so many people are feeling across the country just got more so. more than a dozen package bombs sent to prominent democrats in several states, three in california, one here in the bay area, one in sacramento and another down south. tensions eased a bit today with the arrest of a suspect. perhaps the scare is over. let's hope. depending on your political speaker swa persuasion, it can be easy to build it into something that represents a larger issue or depending on your view dismiss it as some nut and it means nothing more than that. it may be a little of both. either way, it is troubling. a reminder that we live in strange and uncertain times. there is tremendous uncertainty coming soon, too, as that caravan of migrants approaches our border with mexico. what will happen when they arrive? a showdown and a test of wills to be sure.
