governor condemns a shooting attack inside a pittsburgh synagogue. what the suspected gunman said after he was arrested. and the local congressional race that brought bernie sanders to the bay area. abc 7 news starts now. >> announcer: live breaking news. i got one alive. three still alive. four down in the atrium d.o.a. at this time. >> it is dramatic audio from police officers arriving at the scene of a synagogue shooting. describe a horrific, heartbreaking scene. tonight in pittsburgh, pennsylvania a vigil for the victims. a light in the darkness and love following the bullets of hate. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. >> i'm eric thomas. for very latest now on that breaking news, at least 11 people died in this morning's shooti shooting. six are injured, with two of those victims suffering critical injuries. >> they include four police officers who are expected to survive. investigators identify the

suspect as 46-year-old robert bowers, and they believe he acted alone. >> theho is being investigated as a hate crime. abc new reporter stephanie ramos has the latest. >> reporter: a horrifying scene in pittsburgh after a deadly mass shooting at this synagogue. >> it's a very horrific crime scene. it's one of the worst that i've seen. >> reporter: police called to the tree life synagogue after reports of gunshots inside. the fbi, the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms also responding. >> members of the tree of life synagogue conducting a peaceful service in the place of worship were brutally murdered by a gunman targeting them simply because of their faith. >> reporter: after the shooting the suspect, 46-year-old robert bowers, allegedly hid in an office belonging to rabbi emhe shall tus alvin birkin. the rabbi was not gue in shock. >> it's an amazing neighborhood. it's hard to believe it's a city neighborhood. >> reporter: the shooter eventually apprehended and taken

to the hospital, leaving a community devastated by the loss of life. >> this should not be happening. period. it should not be happening in a synagogue. it should not be happening in our neighborhood. >> reporter: as authorities cleared the building, residents were urged to stay inside. >> do not come out of your home right now. it is not safe. >> reporter: pennsylvania's governor tom wolf calling it an absolute tragedy, tweeting "these senseless acts of violence are not who we are as americans." we're told the president has spoken with both the governor and the mayor of pittsburgh. >> terrible, terrible thing, what's going on with hate in our country, frankly, and all over the world. and something has to be done. >> reporter: the shooting is now under federal investigation. stephanie ramos, abc news, washington. meantime, details are emerging about the suspected gunman, robert bowers, who lived fwhauld winn, pennsylvania not far from the synagogue. a law enforcement official told cnn the shooter made janet

jewish comments after he was apprehended. today officers searched bowers' home. fbi officials say they have no information on bowers being known to law enforcement before today. bowers was active on a social network called gab which encourages free speech. there he claimed jews were helping transport members of the migrant caravans. >> synagogues here in the bay area are taking no chances in the wake of the pennsylvania shooti shooting. security has been increased considerably. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is in san francisco with details about what's being done. cornell? >> reporter: hi, eric. i want to show you this. a san francisco police cruiser is parked in front of temple emmanuel here in presidio heights. in fact, police have been patrolling around synagogues here in san francisco and in oakland in the wake of the pennsylvania shooting. the rabbi here is praying for peace and an end to gun violence. david balafi is checking all the doors at congregation shereth israel, making sure they are locked and secured.

>> the fear is copycats. >> reporter: balafi is security chief at the temple, where security has been stepped up in the wake of the pittsburgh synagogue massacre. congregants are entering through a side door escorted by guards. >> it is tragic. it is a hate crime. and hatred will not be tolerated. >> reporter: a san francisco police officer patrols outside temple emmanuel. >> we absolutely stand against every act of hate in every form that it takes. >> reporter: rabbi beth singer says a metal detector is nothing new outside her synagogue and neither is the fear of violence. >> it's something i've personally worried about every day because of the rise of gun violence in churches and schools and public places. >> reporter: we found police officers on patrol around san francisco's jewish community center. >> it's devastating. i'm jewish. >> reporter: state senator scott weiner blasted the presidentam y have had a different outcome if the pennsylvania synagogue had an armed guard. >> the solution is fewer guns,

nothing about it. you know, you have a situation here where you have disturbed minds with hate in their heart and guns in their hands and we just talk about thoughts and prayers and continue to do nothing about it in the united states congress. >> kelly called the shooting an act of evil that is a direct assault on every american value. vice president mike pence today said the deadly shooting in pittsburgh was not just criminal but evil. pence was in las vegas campaigning for republican candidates after stops in new mexico and arizona. the vice president said vegas residents know all too well about attacks on innocent people. he was referring to last year's mass shooting that killed 58 people and hurt more than 500 others at a music festival on the strip. >> i pray for the members of the tree of life synagogue, for the fallen, the injured, and their families. and let's also pray for the strength and wisdom to do everything in our power to bring these senseless acts of violence to an end.

>> pence said anyone who does such a thing in a temple or a church should pay the ultimate price. the council on american islamic relations, or c.a i.r., released a statement today expressing solidarity with the jewish community. cair says "such an act of terror affects all of us. we offer our full support and assistance in the aftermath of this tragedy and our doors are open at all times to our neighbors." c.a i.r. nation's largest muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. >> first lady mentalia trump is among those using social media to express their sadness and outrage over the shooting. she tweets, "my heart breaks over the news out of pittsburgh. the violence needs to stop. may god bless, guide, and unite the united states of america." meantime, congresswoman nancy pelosi tweeted a statement saying all americans share in the grief of the tree of life congregation. she also said, "congress must finally act on common sense gun violence prevention legislation." and the pittsburgh steelers tweeted, "we send our thoughts and prayers to those affected by

hurt when a third floor balcony collapsed at their san francisco home. it happened on lawton street near 26th avenue just after midnight. details on the women's injuries have not been released. the san francisco fire department said police are investigating the incident. the city's building inspectors will also examine the property. in the east bay u.s. senator bernie sanders and congressman barbara lee spent the day rallying bay area constituents to get out the vote. abc 7 news was in berkeley where both democratic leaders encouraged a audience inside the berkeley community theater auditorium. they rallied support of progressive candidates and causes in the november 6th general election. >> in 2014 we had the lowest voter turnout in modern history. in 2018 we must have the highest voter turnout in a midterm election. >> sanders, an independent, has ng nation t ltocrats

elected to office and help flip the house and senate in the upcoming midterms. some of the oldest movies ever, in the meantime, have been restored to four times their regular size to debut at an imax theater for the annual british film institute's london film festival. the cinematic treasures are around 120 years old from the united kingdom's victorian era. they're the work of w.k.l. dixon, a property jaye of inventor thomas edison who first created the super large film format. the bfi's national archive carefully restored the delicate films to digital media which curator brioni dixon said was a painstaking process. >> it's kind of crazy, isn't it? 120-year-old films in an imax. but as a world spectacle very much in keeping with how dixon would have done it himself i think it's a joy. >> as you heard a little bit in, an orchestra accompanied the great victorian moving picture show at its london premiere. >> announcer: now your accuweather forecast with drew

tuma. and an ill be cooling off the next 24 hours as a weak ripple of energy moves off to the north. live doppler 7 along with satellite right now showing you a fair amount of cloud cover into the north bay right now. these clouds are sinking south throughout the next couple of hours. the picture outside, a live look, you can see that leading edge of the cloud cover on the left-hand side of your screen from our emeryville shot right now. so canopy of clouds and sunshine out there, but temperaturewise it's nice out the door right now. 70 in oakland right now. so it's mild in the east day. 74 in san jose. near 80 for santa rosa at this hour. at 80 in brentwood, san ramon. half moon bay pretty comfortable on the coast at 68 degrees. fur headed out and about later on tonight, it's a really mild evening through about 10:00. temperatures mainly in the 50s to mid 60s out there. but the theme throughout the overnight hours is that clouds will be increasing as this front moves to our north.

here's the bigger picture. live doppler 7 along with lle, he coas that's the area of low pressure. unfortunately, all of the rain associated with it is headed toward portland and seattle. for us what we'll notice is an increase in cloud cover overnight and cooler temperatures tomorrow afternoon. hour by hour we go on future weather. we'll time out your early sunday morning. by 12:30 early in the morning you'll see the cloud cover kind of moving in from north to south. we're all watching, though, there is the chance through ukiah even as far south as cloverdale early tomorrow morning, there may be a sprinkle hit or miss there. but you can see the bigger picture. we're dry across the region but the cloud cover is firmly in place first thing on our sunday morning. and throughout the day sunday afternoon we'll call tay blend of sun and cloud cover out there. but with that included cover it kind of limits the heating during the day. so that's why temperatures will be cooler tomorrow than they are today. overnight tonight here's a call from accuweather. we have those clouds moving in

from north to south right now. they'll be thickening in the overnight hours. mainly overcast skies. fog along the coast. and with that cloud cover overhead it tends to act like a blanket. it's going to be a mild overnight period. you can see from the coast to the bay and inland mid if not upper 50s is what we'll drop to in the overnight hours. it's a mild start to the day, but we don't warm too much from those morning lows. you see tomorrow afternoon with that blend of sun and cloud cover out there, only 66 in san francisco. about 69 the high in oakland. we'll warm to about 73 for san jose in the south bay. 75 the high in concord and 73 in napa. the accuweather seven-day forecast is a cooler finish to the weekend but all in all it's a really nice weekend. a little bit cooler even on monday but then a warming trend gets under way. calling tay halloween treat on wednesday. 70s and 80s. and as we start november, guys, it is warm out there with widespread 80s in our warmest spots. not a bad finish to the weekend. just a little cooler. >> what were those words you said? >> november.

los angeles is the sports capital of the west right now. the lakers, clippers, kings, rams, dodgers, ucla and usc all playing at home this week. we'll start at the coliseum where the trojans took on arizona state in a pac-12 south battle. trojans without starting quarterback j.t. daniels. so step up wide receiver tyler vaughn. he's the one who threw that 36-yard touchdown pass. usc up by four. but the sun devils' neil harry. look at this. he takes a punt at the 8 yard line, works his way back to the 2, and then goes upfield and turns it on. all the way to the end zone. officially, this is ad punt rn. arizona state snapped usc's 19-game home winning streak with a 38-35 win.

the gunman, 46-year-old robert bowers, surrendered to police after barricading himself inside the tree of life congregation synagogue where he opened fire while shouting anti-semitic slurs. six other people were hurt in that shooting, including four police officers. president donald trump condemned the attack, calling it an assault on humanity. >> this wicked act of mass murder is pure evil. hard to believe. and frankly something that is

we've learned that cesar sayoc is an amateur bodybuilder and former stripper with a long arrest record who showed little interest in politics until donald trump ran for president. abc news reporter jim dolan has the latest. >> reporter: cesar sayoc now in federal custody. authorities believe he is responsible for those explosive devices mailed to more than a dozen prominent democrats and critics of president trump. >> suspect at the auto zone. >> reporter: witnesses say the 56-year-old suspect was at this auto zone store friday morning just outside of ft. lauderdale when fbi agents rushed in and arrested him. >> wasn't yelling or screaming or flailing. he was in handcuffs and he calmly was escorted to the vehicle. saw him get in with no problem. and he just had that look of okay, it's over. >> reporter: the windows of his white van covered with political messages supporting the president and demonizing his critics, including hillary clinton and cnn.

>> trump! trump! >> this is utterly unacceptable. political violence or the threat of violence is antithetical to our vigorous system of self-government. >> reporter: forensics investigators carefully dissecting one of the crude ieds discovered a latent fingerprint on one of the suspected bombs' components. >> once i knew they had a print i was pretty confident that we'd be able to find the right person. >> reporter: the fingerprint was scanned into a database and there was a match to sayoc. his fingerprint in the criminal justice system for previous arrests including a 2002 bomb threat. but even with sayoc's arrest authorities are still concerned. >> there may be other packages in transit now. >> reporter: sayoc will make a brief appearance at federal court here in miami on monday, and then he will be flown back to new york, where he will eventually stand trial. he faces 48 years in prison. in miami for abc news, i'm jim dolan. happening today, the great

mall in milpitas is hosting a job fair ahead of the holiday shopping season. the center is one of the largest shopping and entertainment destinations in northern california, and the mall hopes to fill more than 200 full and part-time positions. interested applicants should bring copies of their resume to guest services. the fair runs until 7:00 tonight. now, kohl's is also hiring for the holidays. ten stores across the bay area are holding hiring events this weekend. seasonal job positions include sales associates, customer service and stock room operations. employees get a 35% discount and will be considered for open positions after the holiday season. a walk along the river turned into a near-death experience for a woman near sacramento until a chance encounter saved her life. >> it's hard to find true heroes like that. >> she and her dog found a real-life hero. up next, a stranger rushes to the rescue. and i'm meteorologist drew

hayward residents and leaders celebrate at the grand opening of the city's newest public library and community center. the public got its first look at the $40 million building located downtown on c street. the library is dedicated to honor cesar chavez, former president of the farm workers union. construction on the buildig began in 2015. the new main library places the former library that was built in 1951. a chance encounter saved the lives of a woman and her dog. it happened in sacramento after both became trapped in a fast-moving river. reporter steve large has their story. >> it was a horrific night for us. >> reporter: chandra benson and her dog gunther -- >> well, of course he's like my child. >> reporter: -- are back home

now. >> we've done a lot together. that's the first time, though, that we'd ever been swept down a river. >> reporter: the pair nearly died after gunther jumped in the stanislaus river to retrieve a stick and the swift current started carrying him >> in a ste of panic jumped in the river as well. >> reporter: benson's plan to save her dog nearly cost both their lives. >> i had only been in there a few minutes, and my hands were already going numb. >> reporter: in the deep frigid water benson grabbed gunther by the collar with one hand and an overhanging tree branch with the other. >> i was trying to think what should i do, and that's when i knew we were in a bind. i could feel myself getting colder. it was getting colder because it was getting darker. and i thought hypothermia's going to be what gets us. and i just started crying out at the top of my lungs for help. >> reporter: incredibly -- >> then i just hear a "help."
