deadliest attacks on the jewish community in the u.s. maggie ruehle takes us through the terror as it unfolded inburg. >> reporter: many law enforcement officials are calling this the worst crime scene they have ever seen. now the community is left grappling with the hate-filled violence that happened here. this tight knit community coming together saturday evening holding a vigil to remember the lives lost when a gunman opened fire at the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. >> the only shots we hear are the shots coming out towards the officers. >> reporter: police responding to reports of gunfire. the fbi ana tf arriving on the scene, as well. >> multiple agencies responded to this incident this morning. and without their courage, this tragedy would have been far worse. >> reporter: the suspect 46-year-old robert bowers used at least one assault rifle and-three handguns on him. >> the suspect's full motive is unknown. we believe he was acting alone.

>> reporter: he was not known to law enforcement before saturday's shooting. he suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the incident and is now listed in fair condition at a hospital nearby. pennsylvania's governor tom wolf says anti-semitism has no place in the commonwealth. >> my heart breaks for the members of the jewish community. today all of pennsylvania mourns with you. >> reporter: the case is being investigated as a hate crime. he is facing federal charges. >> we are dedicating the entire resources of my office to this federal hate crime and prosecution. >> reporter: local leaders say this neighborhood is known as the jewish center of pittsburgh. a place often described as charming. people say they are still in shock and cannot grasp how violence of this kind could happen here. maggie ruehle, mr. abc news. >> social media users are sharing this image to honor today's victim. the star of david has been incorporated into the logo of

the pittsburgh steelers football team. the image is being shared online with the hash tag stronger than hate. >> security was present outside several synagogues in the bay area today after what happened in pittsburgh. abc7 news reporter is live for us in berkeley where a vigil just ended. the security stayed on site throughout the night there. >> reporter: things just wrapped up here. we're still watching some people electricing out now. this is example of the signs they were giving out. there were also vijs in oakland and san francisco this even. all of them sharing a common message that the hate we've unfortunately seen often in this country needs to end. >> having a brother living there it touches home. >> reporter: jac moritz rocked saturday morning by the news of 11 people dead and six others injured at a synagogue shooting in pittsburgh. his brother a practicing orthodox jew lives in the community that was hit. >> i want to make sure he's safe

you can't just you know, post something on twitter letting everybody know how upset you are. >> reporter: i spoke with several rabbis there evening all telling me local synagogues having maintained a strong relationship with law enforcement in years past and they are still continuing to do that and they will be working closely with law enforcement in the days ahead. reporting live in berkeley, jobina fortson, abc7 news. >> thank you. former president barack obama today posted a tweet following the tree of life massacre. he wrote, "we grieve for the americans murdered in pittsburgh. all of us have to fight to rise -- fight the rise of anti-semitism against who look, love or pray differently and stop making it so easy for those who want to harm the innocent to get their hands on a gun." >> synagogues in the bay area taking no chances. security has been increased czech republicbly. news reporter cornell bernard shows what some are doing.

this tragedy and our doors are open at all times to our neighbors." it is the largest advocacy organization. >> the sports world senior remembering victims. before the start of the world series game between the dodgers and red sox, there was a moment of silence. all of pittsburgh's professional sports teams have posted some sort of tribute on social media. >> reporter: the pittsburgh series is one in a series of attacks against american jew. here in the bay area we've seen an upward trend in anti-semit m anti-semitism. some experts say it is not all motivated by hate. fear is a big issue, as well. >> we saw today in pittsburgh what we believe to be the deadliest anti-semitic attack that's occurred in the united states. >> reporter: he says they've seen a spike in hate crimes against american jew going back to the 2016 presidential campaign. an almost 60% increase from 2016

to 2017. that's the largest single year increase on record. >> not only criminal activity. it's also legal expressions of hatred. it could be somebody saying or doing something using their free speech rights. >> reporter: even here in the bay area. in september during cat jewish new year, flyers were posted at five east bay synagogues. he says white supremacists are trying to plain stream their cause by sanitizing their messaging. > they talk about white rights. they talk about pride in being white. they try to attach it to legitimate issues of debate like immigration. >> reporter: he says jew have been blamed for a variety of society's problems and that leads to fear. >> there's a correlation between hate crimes and the statements and positions of public leaders. >> reporter: this law professor says when president trump attacks muslims or athletes it emboldens people to act. robert bowers complained on

social media about hias, a jewish group that voces for refugees saying they would like to? >> bring in invaders that kill our people." >> this is precisely the kind of fear that drives people to violence. it's not in other words, just a matter of hate. fear is a very important factor. >> reporter: regardless of motive, he says this shouldn't be seen as an isolated incident. >> it may not target your community today but it does affect us all. >> reporter: in san francisco, abc7 news. >> we're going to go back now to pittsburgh where police remain at the scene of that deadly synagogue shooting. > stacey cohen joins us live. tell us what you can about the investigation synergy well, we do have the latest news is the charges that were filed at the late hour here in pennsylvania against the suspect more than 30-count indictment including multiple charges of criminal homicide, cfl assault and charges under the hate crime

statue here in the commonwealth. yes, the investigation is ongoing because this is a shooting that involved 11 people killed, six wounded. two of those wounded were police officers. there's a vast crime scene. there's also an effort to scour social media postings. we've all heard about his anti-semitic remarks. in the charging documents released this evening, it was revealed he made very anti-be semetic slurs while being arrested. clearly the hate crimes charges are stemming from all that information, and it's just been a very active day. it's anticipated to be quite a lengthy and thorough investigation. >> is there any sign that there was a trigger for this? excuse me using that word but something that would have spawned this attack? >> reporter: that's very interesting. i heard in a report just prior to me, they were mentioning his hatred of this group called lias

oakland apartment fire this morning. firefighters found flames and smoke coming from a first floor unit of a three-story apartment building on bancroft near fairfax avenue. crews quickly put it out. five other units in the building suffered smoke damage. firings discovered the dog when they went inside to search for victims. there were no injuries to residents or firefighters. two women seriously hurt when a third floor balcony collapsed at their home here on lawton street near 26th avenue. details on the women's injuries have not been releaseds. the san francisco fire department said police are investigating the incident. the city's building inspectors will also examine the property snir the city's newest public library and community center, the $40 million building located in the heart of downtown on c street. it is dedicated to honor cesar chavez, former president of the

marin county's ed bied to buy the san geronimo golf course suffered a legal blow. a judge reported lid ruled in
