the tree of life synagogue massacre saying we grieve for the americans murdered in pittsburgh. all of us have to fight the rise of anti-semitism. we have to stop making it so easy for those who want to harm the innocent to get their hands on a gun. synagogues in the bay area are taking no chances in the wake of the shooting. security has been increased considerably. abc 7 news cornell bernard shows us what some of them are doing. >> reporter: david is checking all the doors at congregation sherith israel making sure they are locked and secured. >> the fear is copy cats. >> reporter: he is security chief of the temple where security has been stepped up at the massacre. congregation members are entering through a side door escorted by guards. >> it is tragic. it is a hate crime. and hatred will not be tolerated. >> reporter: a san francisco police officer patrols outside

jews. some experts say it's not all motivated by hate. fear is a big issue. >> we saw in mitt pipittsburgh biggest antis-semitic act in decades. >> reporter: they seen a spike in hate crime against jews going back to the 2016 presidential campaign. there is an almost 60 percent increase from 2016 to 2017, the largest single year increase on record. >> criminal activity and legal expressions of hatred. somebody doing or saying something using free speech rights. >> reporter: even here in the bay area. in september during the jewish new year, flyers with antis-semitic messages were posted at five east basin synagogues. >> using the terminology of the civil rights movement so white rights and pride in being white.

they try to attach it to legitimate issues of debate like the immigration debate. >> reporter: he says jews have been demonized blamed for society's problems and that leads to fear. >> there is a correlation between hate crimes and the statements in positions of public leaders. >> reporter: u.c. hastings law professor says when president trump attacks mexicans or must almos muslims or athletes, i it emboldens people to act. saying they would like to quote bring in invaders that kill our people. >> this is precisely the kind of fear that drives people to violence. it's not in other words, just a matter of hate. fear is a very important fact tore. >> reporter: regardless of motive, this shouldn't be seen as an isolated incident. >> they may not target your community today but it does affect us all. all right. this is a live look at the press

conpranference in pittsburgh starting now. the first person we'll hear from is s brady, a u.s. attorney. let's listen in. >> good morning, everyone. thank you for being here with us today. i'm scott brady, the united states attorney for the western district of pennsylvania. on behalf of attorney general jeff sessions and the entire family of the united states department of justice, we want to offer our most heart-felt condolences and prayers to the victims of yesterday's senseless acts of hatred and violence and to family and friends and the community and larger community of pittsburgh. the jewish community of pittsburgh that one w p bu pittsburghers treasure. so this was an attack upon our neighbors and upon our friends and one that we felt very deeply. the fact that this attack took place during a worship service makes it even more heinous.

a place of worship is a sacred place. it's a place of peace and a place of grace. it's a place where a community comes together to celebrate that they hold most dear and sacred. and this is our first freedom as a people. so today, all over pennsylvania men and women in similar places of worship are in prayer for a jewish brothers and sisters. so today we stand together as a community, a community that rejects hatred and violence, a community where neighbors respect neighbors, where we embrace our religious diversity and celebrate differences. and together we mourn those whose lives were lost and we begin the healing process. i want to commend the courageous police officers and swat teams that responded to the scene. they are truly heroes who without hesitation and without concern for their safety ran

towards gunfire to protect innocent victims. by confronting and neutralizing bowers, they prevented additional loss of life. so word about the charges. last night my office filed federal charges against the defendant robert bowers. the complaint alleges that on saturday, october 27th at approximately 9:50 a.m., robert bowers entered the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh squirrel hill neighborhood. at that time neighbors were engaged in religious services and worship. bowers was armed with multiple weapons. he had three glock .357 handguns and an ar 17 assault rifle. inside the synagogue, bowers shot and killed 1 1 individuals and wounded two others. nelice offeranows shot at them ultimately four police officers were injured and three of them were shot by

during the course of his deadly assault on the people of the synagogue, bowers made statements regarding genocide and his desire to kill jewish people. after stand off with police, bowers eventually surrendered and remains in federal custody today. so our complaint charges bowers with 29 separate federal crimes. there are 11 counts of murdering victims exercising religious believes, there are 11 counts of using a firearm to commit murders and each count is punishment by death. the final counts are based upon the harm inflicted by bowers and brave police officers who in trying to stop bowers' rampage put their own lives in danger. three of these brave men were shot by bowers so bowers is scheduled to make his initial appearance before a magistrate judge a

1:30 p.m. so moving forward, the investigation is underway and our work will continue. know that we will spare no effort or resource in ensuring that the defendant is held fully accountable for his unspeakable and hateful crimes. we would ask the public and media to have patience with us as we conduct this investigation and understand that there are things during times of the investigation. at the conclusion of our remarks, we'll be happy to take questions. now you'll hear from special agent robert jones. >> thank you, scott. last night at approximately 9:00 p.m., robert bowers was formally taken into federal custody following an arrest warrant by a federal magistrate judge. he's ith spal followi s and under guard. at this point, we have nothing t indicate that bowers had accomplices but again, we're in

the early stages of this investigation. our hearts continue to go out to the families of the victims of the jewish community last evening after difficult work by the medical examiner's office, all 1 1 victims were identified and next of kin identification took place. as of 6:00 a.m. this morning, all of the victims had been taken from the education center to the medical examiner's office. i want to personally thank the leadership of the jewish community center and rabbis of the three congregations located at the facility for patience and the patience of the families as we worked through the night to identify and remove the victims this morning. this is a large, complex crime scene and much work remains to be done. at present, fb i-tei teams aree and the scene may take up to a week to process. as reported already, we've conducted a search at the subject's house in baldwin and a

search of his vehicle will take place this morning. i can't commenthose searches. we continue to conduct interviews, scrub social media, review possible surveillance camera video and exploit digital media to determine how and why he committed this act. i ask again if you have information that may help, contact law enforcement. i'd like again to thank chief shubert of the pittsburgh police for heroic actions of officers. had bowers made it out of the facility, there is a strong possibility additional violence would have occurred. i would like to thank wendell and his team. they are a big part of the community that promises to protect and serve. >> good morning. i would just like to take a few minutes and thank the outpouring of support we've received over

the last 24 hours. the jewish community center, the red cross, the salvation army, the various grief counselors, the children's institute and the many other organizations and businesses that provide food and logistics for the officers and victims. as mr. jones mentioned, the area around wilkins and shady will remain closed so the forensic investigation of the crime scene can continue. that area will probably remain closed for up to a week. extra patrols have been assigned around various sensitive locations throughout the city of pittsburgh to include where the scheduled event will occur tonight. >> all right. so we've just heard from a number of people in pittsburgh, including the u.s. attorney scott brady and a special agent with the pittsburgh field burro. they said that bowers is in federal custody right now, sounds like he was in the

hospital -- is in the hospital recovering from surgery but then will be before a judge tomorrow afternoon. there are 29 federal charges against him and officials say that they found that he had three glock 357 handguns and one ar-15. he shot 11 people inside the synagogue and woulded tnded two and four police officers injured. they said three officers were shot by bowers. it sounds like there is a fourth police officer, we don't know how he was shot. we're also told that bowers made statements about genocide and a desire to kill jewish people. there was a stand off. he surroue su surrendered and il custody. there is no indication he had accomplices and the next of kin to people killed has taken place. they say you're looking at the

scene right there in pittsburgh or at least the edge of it, it's a large and complicated crime scene. they have multiple agencies from all over the area helping process the scene and that could take up to a week. they have already searched bowers' home and say today they will search his car and they will also comb through his social media accounts to figure out what his motives are and how of course, all of this happened. it sounds like this is just the beginning of a very long and heartbreaking investigation. we're going to be rig see the heated umbrella -- >> it works amazing. >> of course it does. next "right this minute."

good sunday morning waking up to a good deal of cloud cover once again. some of the fog is dense, otherwise we'll wait to see the sun today. we have a system allowing for the rain in the pacific northwest and a stronger on shore push and cool down may be eight degrees cooler today in the inland east bay. we had mid 80s yesterday and right now it's a warmer start with 54 in fremont and 59 in oakland and upper 40s here and upper 50s for oakland and a quarter mile of six miles here at oakland. sfo one mile. i would suspect we'll see delays there at the airport and santa rosa at seven miles. here is a look at the airport where we'll see slow clearing on

the peninsula and cooler temperatures. we have patchy dense fog and high clouds and warmer start cooler today with hazy conditions and stay dry throughout the next several days but the pattern changes as the warmup begins on tuesday. halloween will be dry but we'll see numbers back into the 80s in our inland east bay. as we look at our hour by hour animation, you'll notice we have cloud cover all the way into our east bay valleys, just about and then throughout the morning hours, it's really slow to clear. here we are at 1:00 in the afternoon, sun in the north bay but hazy conditions over in oakland also in livermore and san jose and 4:00 in the afternoon, the clouds want to pull back a bit from the coast but we'll see the fog linger at the shoreline. so cooler numbers on the way today. tomorrow for san jose, average highs in the low 70s. 73 today, tomorrow, 75 on tuesday and up through the upper 70s to near 80 degrees by next week. elsewhere in the south bay, low 70s for you.

75 on the peninsula 60s. on the coast you'll notice the cloud cover, low 60s daily city. downtown will be just a few degrees cooler today. 73 for your up in santa rosa. the hazy conditions with napa low 70s on the east bay. 69 oakland and newark 73 today and inland a cool down with temperatures in the 70s. by 4:00 we should see 75 with 76 in brandwood. temperatures cooling off with patchy fog. 53 in san jose over in oakland today for the raiders, 65. partly cloudy skies throughout the afternoon and the o accuweather forecast, mid 70s inland and partly sunny today looking at the temperatures near average but cooler than we have been on monday and then for tuesday, we begin a reversal with a warmup, the wind shifts.

six degrees from friday's reading. patchy dense fog, high clouds this morning and cooler today with hazy conditions and looking for a dry pattern for the next seven days but going to get warmer, much warmer, a return to low to mid 80s by the middle of next week. hour by hour the fog is with us and begins to clear on out in the north bay a little bit sooner, i think, than elsewhere. here is 1:30. you can see a lot of cloud cover all around the bay and then it sweeps out of here throughout the afternoon. and that's thanks to a bit of a wind shift after that front pushes through. some stronger winds. tomorrow's highs are similar to today in the 70s. 60s seasan francisco. this is the warming trend near 80 antioch and livermore and by wednesday, numbers around the and after that, we could be even warmer. so highs today 65. half moon bay. 69 oakland and livermore75 and
