this morning on "world news now," breaking news in indonesia, a passenger plane crashes shortly after takeoff, losing contact with air traffic control. 189 passengers and crew were on board. details ahead. the synagogue horror in pittsburgh. worshippers gunned down during a baby naming ceremony, a celebration. 11 people were killed and several others injured. new details on the victims and the alleged gunman now in police custody. and new this half hour, america has a new world series champion. >> the boston red sox wrapped up a dominating season with a 5-1 win over the los angeles dodgers. this is the moment right there. their ninth world series win. we're going to hear from the red sox pitcher who clinched that victory. and stars, they're just like us.

how some of hollywood's top celebrities decked themselves out for a spook-tacular weekend of halloween festivities. we'll check out some of the more head-turning costumes later this half hour in "the skinny." it is monday, october 29th. >> and guess who that is. >> post malone? >> yeah. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> it kind of looks like it would be like bruno mars, but it's not bruno mars. >> that's not bruno mars? >> no, it's post malone. >> right. >> somebody going as post malone, but it could be bruno mars there who did that. >> you'll find out later. we'll start with the breaking news this half hour. the officials from the u.s. are on their way to indonesia today to try to figure out what brought down an american-made jetliner. >> the boeing 737 lost contact shortly after takeoff. this is the first reported crash involving the newest version of the boeing 737. the max 8. a tugboat crew reports seeing

the jet crash into the java sea and debris has been found floating into the water, including personal possessions. >> new pictures show relatives of passengers, as you can see there, grief stricken at the news at the airport. we're going to bring you any new details on this story. boeing is aware of it and is standing by and deeply saddened by the loss of this jetliner. they just released a statement moments ago. we turn now to the tragedy in pittsburgh. some new details emerging about the innocent worshippers brutally gunned down in their synagogue and the man accused of pulling the trigger. >> 11 people died, ranging in age from 54 to 97. six were wounded, including four police officers, and the suspect was shot and arrested. thousands of people of all faiths attended a vigil last night to honor the victims of what the mayor is calling the darkest day in pittsburgh's history. >> and in remembrance to those who were killed and injured, the

empire state building went dark with the exception of an orange halo symbolizing gun violence. abc's matt gutman has more on the massacre. >> reporter: the first 911 calls coming in at 9:54 a.m. people inside the tree of life synagogue frantic. they were under attack. members of three congregations inside. a baby-naming ceremony about to get under way and now a gunman had entered the house of worship. >> as soon as he came into the lobby, he opened fire. >> reporter: according to the fbi, the alleged gunman, 46-year-old robert bowers, hurling words of hate against jews, even as he murdered them. when the first two police officers encountered bowers, they say he was wielding an ar-15 rifle. >> we approached the front of the synagogue, he began firing at us. >> reporter: the officers wounded and the gunman then retreating farther into the synagogue. a s.w.a.t. team enters, discovering a scene of unimaginable horror.

11 people, three women and eight men, dead. as medics rushed to evacuate the wounded, officers climbed to the third floor where bowers has fled. >> contact. contact. shots fired. shots fired. give me additional resources. additional resources third floor. come on, we've got a guy barricaded actively shooting at us. >> reporter: what came next, an all-out gunbattle. bowers is shot and surrenders. >> the suspect talking about all these jews need to die. we're still communicating with him. >> reporter: police say he was ranting, they're committing genocide to my people. i just want to kill jews. >> we were dispatched to active gunfire. >> reporter: in the neighborhood, fear and disbelief. >> my father-in-law was inside. everybody. i got married in that place. this is crazy. this is unbelievable. people have to stop the hate. >> reporter: kim and kevin harden live across the street from the synagogue. as the chaos unfolded, police knocked on their door,

positioning a sniper in their bedroom window. the couple hearing a barrage of gunfire. >> it sounded like a full-on gunbattle. >> it did. >> it did. it was a warzone. >> reporter: as the couple watched, they could see survivors straggling out. >> it's so sad because they were so old they couldn't, you know, go fast and the police were urging them, hurry, hurry, hurry. >> reporter: authorities say in addition to that ar-15, bowers had three handguns with him and used all of his weapons. >> it's a very horrific crime scene. it's one of the worst that i've seen. >> reporter: matt gutman, abc news, pittsburgh, pennsylvania. >> the suspected gunman had no criminal record but his anger was clear on social media. abc's pierre thomas takes a look. >> reporter: as the fbi and police race to dissect the life of robert bowers, a chilling portrait emerging. the introduction to his social media page signaling the hate to come.

jews are the children of satan. just before the deadly assault, bowers posted this, i can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. screw your optics. i'm going in. bowers wrote those posts on the fringe social media site gab, which has become popular among white supremacists who believe mainstream sites like facebook and twitter censor their radical views. on gab, which has nearly a half million users, bowers reposted vile comments like this, it's the filthy evil jews bringing the filthy evil muslims into the country. about president trump he wrote, trump is a globalist not a nationalist. there is no make america great again as long as there is a blank infestation. bowers using a racial slur for jewish. law enforcement officials saying the 46-year-old not on their radar. a neighbor describing bowers as reclusive. >> the most terrifying thing is just how normal he seemed. >> reporter: if convicted, bowers faces the death penalty. based on the attorney general's statement, it's likely to be

pursued. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. >> the president in the meantime is facing a fresh round of calls to tone down his rhetoric following that attack. the president said he did not cancel his weekend campaign rallies because we can't let evil change our lives. >> last night's vigil attracted mourners from the jewish community and beyond. >> yeah, thousands showed up at pittsburgh's soldiers and sailors memorial hall. despite the pouring rain, they were there to grieve and comfort each and other to stand up to anti-semitism. ♪ ♪ >> when violence came to christian sanctuaries, you stood with us, and today with our whole hearts we stand with you. >> we will drive anti-semitism and the hate of any people back to the basement on their computer and away from the open

discussions and dialogues around this city, around this state and around this country. >> our goal is to make sure that pittsburgh is a place where immigrants can call it their sanctuary or refuge if they want to. >> this bigotry will not defeat us. love will conquer all. >> some scenes from the pittsburgh area overnight. there's been a dramatic rise in anti-semitic incidents over the last year. later this hour we're going to take a look at the troubling uptick in violence sparked by hate. there is a hearing for the man charged with mailing bombs. a hearing for cesar sayoc in south florida this afternoon. investigators say they connected his fingerprints and dna to the packages. investigators have recovered 14 of the suspected devices. boston is waking up to another world series championship this morning. >> that's right.

that deadly attack in pittsburgh is only the latest in what appears to be an alarming trend in our country of hate turning violent. >> it has a growing number of our nation's civic leaders from both sides of the political aisle vowing to combat this troubling trend. here's abc's martha raddatz. >> reporter: in the last week a simmering hate in this country turning violent. those 14 ieds sent in the mail allegedly built by the man living in this van plastered with partisan stickers,

including targets on the faces of prominent democrats. the suspect seen here. >> you take a look at these people. you study these people. >> reporter: on wednesday, an armed man tried to break into a predominately black church in jeffersontown, kentucky. he then walked to a kroger and fatally shot two black victims, passing right by a white man in the parking lot. and now the horrific crime at a neighborhood synagogue. at a time when anti-semitic incidents reported in this country are surging, up 57% in 2017. here in pittsburgh it's not lost to community leaders that in those first public remarks after saturday's synagogue shooting the president suggested having armed guards in places of worship might help. >> do you think it might have saved lives, an armed guard? >> yesterday it was at a synagogue. it might be at a school, but the next time it could be at a grocery store or at a public
