how they used some muscle last night to defeat the dodgers in l.a. and a possible change coming to "the simpsons." have we seen the end of a major character? and what was meghan wearing? the shocking price tag for one of her outfits for her trip with prince harry to new zealand. good morning. we begin with breaking news in indonesia where a passenger plane has crashed. >> that plane, brand-new. u.s.-built boeing-737 max 8 similar to this one crashing into the sea just moments after takeoff. all 189 people on board are believed dead. >> the lion air flight was headed to sumatra, about an hour flight. the plane lost contact with controllers shortly after takeoff. >> the pilot had asked to return to the airport. personnel, possessions and seats have been found in the water as well as an oil slick. now relatives as you can see

there, grief-stricken as they waited at the airport for better news. the 737 had just gone into service two months ago, and this is first reported crash of the max 8 version. boeing issuing a statement saying they are standing by to help in the investigation. we turn to the other big story that we're following. the resilience and grief in pittsburgh devastated by that massacre that killed 11 people. >> thousands of mourners gathered last night for an interfaith vigil to stand up against hate and pay tribute to the eight men and three women gunned down by a man who told police he wanted all jews to die. abc's janai norman joins us now with the latest. good morning, janai. >> reporter: guys, good morning. the city held a vigil last night honoring those 11 victims and at the same time, the investigators are learning more about the suspected gunman who allegedly posted his plans on social media shortly before that 20-minute shooting rampage. >> as soon as he came into the lobby, he opened fire. >> reporter: saturday services at the tree of life synagogue were interrupted by gunfire.

the gunman, 46-year-old robert bowers, armed with an ar-15 assault rifle and handguns, said to be hurling words of hate against jews as he murdered them. >> suspect is talking about all these jews need to die. we're still communicating with him. >> reporter: the city of pittsburgh left reeling. honoring the 11 victims ranging in age from 54 to 97. among them, two brothers, a family doctor and a husband and wife, married at that same synagogue more than 60 years ago. >> we're here to support the jewish community. what was done yesterday was not just harmful to the jewish community, but really a continuation of the challenges that we have in the u.s. >> reporter: police say the suspect was not on their radar and had no record, but releasing chilling details about the man behind the rampage fueled by hate. the introduction to his social media page says it all. jews are the children of satan. >> we stand together as a community, a community that

rejects hatred and violence. >> reporter: just an hour before the deadly assault, bowers pest -- posted on the fringe social media site, gab, which is popular among white supremacists writing, i can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. screw your optics. i'm going in. >> i think this is another example of hate in our country. it just doesn't go away. >> reporter: and the mayor called saturday the darkest day in pittsburgh's history. that suspect was injured in a shootout with police and then taken into custody and now prosecutors want to seek the death penalty against him. kendis? >> all right, janai norman in d.c. with the latest. thank you. and president trump is pushing back against critics who say his rhetoric is paving the way for a rise in hate across the country. last night he tweeted, the fake news is doing everything in their power to blame republicans, conservatives and me for the division and hatred that has been going on for so long in our country. actually, it is their fake and dishonest reporting which is

causing problems far greater than they understand. abc's jonathan karl has more. >> reporter: in his first public comments after the massacre, president trump condemned what he called an act of hate, but he did not mention the victims. instead, he suggested armed guards at the synagogue could have prevented the tragedy. >> if you take a look, if they had protection inside, the results would have been far better. >> reporter: no mention of anti-semitism until a few hours later, when the president, reading from a teleprompter, called the attack pure evil. >> this was an anti-semitic act. you wouldn't think this would be possible in this day and age, but we just don't seem to learn from the past. >> reporter: the president said he considered canceling his political events in the wake of the massacre. >> and at first i was thinking, i'll cancel, and then i said, you know, we can't let evil change our life and change our schedule.

>> reporter: at his next stop, a rally in illinois, the president's words veered between tightly scripted sober-minded words about the massacre and classic trumpism. >> if you don't mind, i'm going to tone it down just a little bit, is that okay? >> reporter: the president says he plans to visit pittsburgh in the wake of the massacre, a visit that will likely happen in the coming days although the white house hasn't said exactly when he will go. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. >> and the officials have a suspect in custody, there are many questions. former fbi agent and contributor steve gomez says most of them center around who was this guy and why would he have done it? >> well, the law enforcement agencies are looking at his background. they are really going to dive into what has led to his radicalization. i mean, essentially he was if i would -- filled with so much

hate. he was anti-semitic. for law enforcement and the fbi, they want to know what leads a person down that path, not only to commit violence, but to where they become so engrossed in this anti-semitic and violent behavior, how are they going to stop this from happening in the future? >> you were mentioning the radicalization they will look into. you know they started scrubbing his social media pages, his online presence. is there some kind of connection here to online hate groups? >> there possibly is. i mean, it appears that he is espousing all this rhetoric. there will be supporters and affiliates of that rhetoric. there are a number of groups that are out there that also sponsor that kind of rhetoric and that ideology. he may or may not be officially or unofficially part of those types of groups. they are going to look into that, and then of course, they are going to want to see who are any of these associates of those groups that were maybe communicating with him. were they ashrined and are they thinking about similar types of

violent activity. >> our steve gomez there, and once again the suspect makes his first court appearance this morning. and it's time now for a look at your weather this morning. a fast-moving clipper system is bringing scattered showers and gusty winds to parts of the great lakes and the midwest. that is now pushing east. this as much of the northeast is trying to recover from the weekend's brutal nor'easter. it caused travel nightmares and coastal flooding from the jersey shore to cape cod, and winds gusting over 60 miles per hour are being blamed for downed trees and leaving thousands in the dark at the storm's peak. well, the world series trophy is on its way back to boston. >> the red sox finished off the dodgers last night in game five in l.a. series mvp, steve pierce, homered twice to help boston to a 5-1 win. the title is the red sox's ninth overall, their fourth since 2004. the dodgers lost the series for

man charged with mailing suspected bombs to several prominent democrats makes his first court experience today. >> a hearing is setes federalha after investigats say they connected his fingerprints and dna to the of the suspected devices. today's hearing is in florida. the case will eventually move to new york city. he faces more than 40 years in prison if convicted. the u.s. defense secretary jim mattis spoke directly to saudi arabia's foreign minister about the need for a full investigation into the death of "washington post" jamal khashoggi. he says the diplomat felt no need to be transparent about the murder, which they now admit was premeditated. evidence collected by turkey will now ensure more than one review. the new trump of the southwest's largest nation.

the far right candidate, jair bolsonaro won 55% of the vote. he has vowed to unite the country. opposition groups are worried he'll cut civil liberties. the white house says president trump called him to congratulate him on his victory. authorities in britain are investigating a deadly helicopter crash that killed the owner of a top soccer team. the copter went down in a parking lot next to lester city stadium. it had taken off from the field inside the stadium just moments earlier. the club's beloved owner did not survive. fans have been leaving flowers and other tributes outside the stadium. the club's owner helped lead the team to its unlikely premier league title in 2016. a ninth child has died from a dangerous virus outbreak at a new jersey pediatric center. health officials say the victim was medically fragile with respiratory illness. for now, the facility is not allowed to take any new patients. a preliminary investigation has reportedly found hand washing deficiencies there. and turning now that nearly

threat descended in the darkness. >> i look up and there is a rattlesnake coming down, and i pulled out the stick and started beating on this rattlesnake. i killed that one. >> reporter: miraculously, nearly 72 hours later, help finally arrived. >> i broke down. started crying. >> reporter: hours later, he would be free and now waddell is safely recovering at the hospital. waddell is expected to make a full recovery, but says it might be time to find a new hobby. as for the man who found him -- >> you think? >> yeah. it was actually a friend who went looking for waddell after he failed to come home for a few days. >> friend for life i would say. and the dream cruise to the caribbean becoming a nightmare. he discovered a hidden camera facing their bed during a three-day trip on a carnival fantasy cruise in october of last year. dana and chris white spotted the camera on day two. they notified the front desk and recorded the encounter on a cell
