this as we're learning more about what may have motivated the shooter. rabbi jeffrey myers can still hear the gunshots. >> i'm hearing people screaming, and it's seared in my brain. i can't erase that tape. >> reporter: myers recounting the carnage as the gunman who police have identified as 46-year-old robert bowers stormed the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. >> something just innately told me that's a semiautomatic weapon. i immediately announced to my congregation, drop to the floor, do not move, don't utter a sound, be still. >> reporter: expressionless and shackled to a wheelchair, bowers appeared in federal court monday. federal prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty against bowers. of major interest to investigators are the subject's social media posts including those on a fringe site popular with white supremacists. there authorities say he

displayed a hatred of jews and migrants. >> i think this is another example of hate in our country that just doesn't go away, and i'm concerned because i think we're just going down the wrong path. hate has to stop. >> reporter: today the first funerals are being held. among them two brothers, cecil and david rosenthal, will be laid to rest together. also today the president and the first lady will visit pittsburgh to meet with the families of the victims. as for bowers, he remains in custody and is returning to court on thursday for a preliminary hearing. elizabeth hagedorn, abc news, washington. >> elizabeth, thanks so much. and as the president and first lady head to pittsburgh, the white house is forcefully defending mr. trump's claim that inaccurate news reporting is to blame for dividing the nation. in his very first comments after that deadly synagogue shooting, the president condemned what he

called an act of hate, but he did not mention the victims, instead suggesting armed guards at the synagogue could have prevented the results. >> if they had protection inside, the results would have been far better. >> reporter: an idea the mayor of pittsburgh firmly disagrees with. >> we should try to stop irrational behavior from happening at the forefront. >> reporter: later the president striking a somber tone. >> our nation and the world are shocked and stunned by the grief. >> reporter: but in an interview with fox news overnight, he defended the decision to hold a rally the same day as the shooting. >> you should go about your life. you can't let these people disrupt any more than they already have. >> reporter: and fired back at claims that his rhetoric could be fueling all that violence. >> when i say enemy of the people, i'm talking about the fake news, and it is fake. >> reporter: overnight trump made it very clear that one of the targets of recent attacks, cnn, is among the fake news media he considers the enemy of the people.

found inside his van where police believe he assembled the devices. another was found yesterday similar to the others. had one was mailed to cnn headquarters in atlanta. officials warn there may be more of these packages in the mail. the county republican headquarters in south daytona beach, florida, was vandalized this weekend. someone fired four shots through the plate glass window at the strip mall. no one was in the office at the time, and there were no injuries. police have no witnesses at this time. the party chairman says the shooting must be the work of some nice democrat. police say a school bus driver put himself and a 12-year-old in a life-threatening situation. dash cam video shows the bus entering floodwaters near austin, texas, earlier this month. the driver apparently ignored a barrier. moments later the bus begins drifting away. the driver and the student on the bus were rescued. the driver was charged with well, time now for a look at your weather for this morning. a storm is moving across the

pacific northwest bringing rain on the coast and mountain snow to the northern rockies. it could be some of the biggest snow of the season so far for the oregon cascades. and those storms will likely soak trick-or-treaters and may cause some flooding across parts of the central states as well. and looking at today's high temperatures, the 50s in the pacific northwest. low 40s in denver. 50s in detroit, new york and boston but still warm in several cities. 80th -- 80s in memphis. and coming up, a powerful earthquake overseas. the video just coming in. also ahead, students running for their lives after a deadly shooting at a school in north carolina. what's to blame here?

we've got the voices of the stakeholders from the property institute chief executive -- >> an earthquake down under brought parliament to a halt in new zealand. the 6.1 magnitude quake affected the country's north island. no major damage was reported, but parliament was evacuated for about 30 minutes. reports say more than 9,000 people felt the quake. >> and you can see the camera trembling there a little bit. also in that region the search continues for the fuselage of the indonesian jetliner that crashed into the sea. workers have recovered bodies and personal possessions even some seats., even some seats. it's believed all 189 people on board the lion air flight died. officials still don't know why the brand-new boeing 737 crashed minutes after takeoff. there was a problem with its instruments the day before. in the meantime, authorities are

trying to figure out whether an indonesian national on the u.s. no-fly list may have been on board that plane. a man is accused of burglarizing the wisconsin home of a missing teenager. police say the man broke into jayme closs' home this weekend hours before her parents were laid to rest. and took clothes belonging to jayme. closs was last seen two weeks ago when her parents were found shot to death. officers say they were alerted by motion activated cameras installed after the murder. the man has been cleared in closs' disappearance. overnight we learned the identities of the man and woman would fell to their deaths in yosemite national park. they were indian citizens living in the united states and travel bloggers who posted on social media as they went around the country and the world. in one recent post the woman can be seen sitting on the edge of the grand canyon. the ironic caption mentions the danger and asks is our life just worth one photo?

house fire in south san francis francisco. >> firefighters battled smoke and flames at this home on fairway drive earlier this morning. you can see the fire heavily damaged the house. a woman that lives there says she woke up around 1:00, found something burning and saw the garage on fire. she says her family recently moved into that rental home. le happening now, the threat of fire danger continues in parts of the bay area. >> north bay and east bay under particular watch. matt brisbane joining us. >> reporter: good morning. some really scary conditions as we head into halloween in the bay area. you have windy conditions and dry conditions and firefighters warning everyone to be extra careful. >> by the end of october, we haven't had any substantial rain since the spring, so all the fields are really dry. >> reporter: dry is right.
