hours, temperature in the 70s and 80s 6:13 in the evening. let a check of with od morning. >> good morn bit of a tough start in the tri-valley. westbound 580 near the 680 split, we have a sig alert. we have a couple lanes open. we did have all lanes closed before 4:00 a.m. it was the end of a short pursuit by chp that resulted in this collision. they're in clean-up mode right now. i want to toss it out to abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield. she's there and she knows a lot more than i do. >> reporter: hi, alexis. we were up there at the, dent seen briefly. you can see it behind me. they wanted us to get off the highway because they're doing their best to clear this scene so they can open this up for the

morning commute. we saw chp officers with shovels sweeping the highway. i'm not sure i've ever seen that before. they were really hustling and telling me, we got to get out of here and open this for the commute. this is westbound 580 right at 680, the pleasanton area. we saw a crashed car. it was on a tow truck about to get hauled out of there. i did ask a chp officer, what happened? she said it was a short pursuit and a crash and that's why this car is there blocking the lanes. we didn't see a crashed chp car. we just saw the crashed car of the person they were pursuing. i asked if everyone was okay. she said yes. but it looks like they're going to get this open very quickly. this shouldn't impact your commute too much. if you haven't left the house yet, you should be okay. it took us -- it's a slowdown. it took us ten minutes to go 0.6

miles. we were stuck among a lot of big rigs. you really notice how many big rigs use this area when it's all clustered together. this should be opening soon so your commute should be okay. reporting live in pleasanton, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. today three of the victims in the pittsburgh synagogue shooting will be laid to rest. this comes as the president and first lady travel to pittsburgh to meet with the victims' families. abc news reports from washington. >> reporter: good morning. funerals will be held for some of the 11 worshippers of saturday's massacre, this as we're learning more about what may have motivated the alleged gunman. the rabbi can still hear the gunshots. >> hearing people screaming and it's seared in my brain. >> reporter: recounting the carnage as the gunman, who police have identified as

36-year-old robert bowers stormed the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. >> i immediately announced to my congregation, drop to the floor. do not move. don't utter a sound. be still. >> reporter: expressionless and shackled to a wheelchair, bowers appeared in federal court monday. federal prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty against bowers. today the first funerals are being held. among them, two brothers, cecil and david rosenthal will be laid to rest together. also today the president and the first lady will be in pittsburgh to meet with the families of the victims. as for bowers, he remains in custody and will return for a preliminary hearing on thursday. elizabeth hagadorn, rabbis led a group in song and prayer, sharing the message that kindness to others and strength in the community are the best ways toworst of times.

>> the attack is forcing a film festival in the south bay to hire armed security officers. abc7 news was also in san jose where the silicon valley jewish film festival runs through november 11th. people from a nearby islamic center are offering to volunteer to monitor the festival. >> and flags at san francisco city hall will fly at half-staff today. the president ordered them lowered as a sign of respect. the man accused of mailing explosives to prominent democrats and cnn on friday will be back in court as investigators find another suspicious package. >> a package was intercepted at a postal facility in atlanta yesterday. it was addressed to cnn's world headquarters. the fbi says it's similar to the 14 other packages allegedly sent by cesar sayock. these are sketches from the

hearing where the judge ordered sayock to be held without bail. michel moore is releasing feesage of sayock at a rally for president trump. moore says this gives glimpse holding an anti-cnn sign. we now know the identity of the couple that died after falling at yosemite. they recently moved to the bay area. >> they were natives of india. the couple wrote a travel blog. they just recently warned people of the danger of taking selfie on cliff park rangers recovered their bodies last thursday from below taft point. in the north bay, a napa fieldworker died after getting caught in a grape harvesting

dublin area. westbound 580 near the 680 split. it's a sig alert chp saying only the far left lane is open. this is that crash we were talking about with amy hollyfield. that resulted at the end of a short pursuit by chp. i think they'll have this back open shortly. in the meantime, i would use dublin boulevard or stone ridge drive to the south to get around that. hearing about a westbound 580 pothole, we have four vehicles with flat fires and chp advising you use the truck bypass instead. a sig alert in the north bay that we'll talk more about at 5:20. in the east bay, new details involving a human skull found in west oakland last week. the alameda county sheriff's office now believes the case is connected to a male torso discovered in that same general area about a month ago. the skull was found in the backyard of a home on the corner of 29th and west streets friday morning. investigators believe the skull

good morning. time approaching 5:13 a.m. we're looking at your 12-day day planner in the east bay. by 2:00 and 4:00, comfortable and mild in the east bay. sunshine temperatures in the low 70s. reggie? >> thank you, drew. i think this is the most interesting thing we're going to share with you today. abc 7 committed to building a better bay area. one issue people want to see improve, car break-ins. we told you they're down 14% so far from last year. police are comparing numbers january through september. you need to put this in perspective because this year the department has already

logged 19,000 break-ins. that's more than 72 every day. an average of one every 20 minutes. last year there was a break-in every 17 minutes. is that an improvement? yes. a big improvement? not really. an australian couple on vacation in san francisco had their rental car broken into wednesday. the car parked at fisherman's wharf garage for less than an hour. the thieves stole their computers, passports, medication. they called the police and they didn't get much help. >> we asked if they would review the garage for us and they said they didn't have the manpower to do so. >> the abc7 news reached out to police who said this should not happen. and then the situation quickly changed. look at that. the couple says officers found and delivered their passports and luggage to their hotel in monterrey. we reached out to several police departments and asked, what

should you do if a thief breaks into your car? call 911 if a progress. if time has passed, report the burglary online, by phone or at the police station. in san francisco you would call 311. police in berkeley, san francisco and fremont say they will send an officer if the scene is, quote, fresh. in berkeley that means the break-in happened under an hour ago. in san francisco it's when the theft is in progress or if police aren't busy with other priority calls. fremont says it will almost always send an officer unless there's a severe staffing shortage. in today's "gma first look," an update we first brought you yesterday. about a couple that found a camera in their bedroom on board a carnival cruise ship. we have the latest in today's "gma first look". >> they're the couple who says they found a hidden camera

inside their cabin aboard a carnival cruise ship. >> don't you want gloves on? >> reporter: recording with their own phone as a worker came to remove the device. dana and chris white now tell "inside edition" they feel like their privacy had been invaded. they say they wanted to stay anonymous but now speaking out after the cruise line said the camera couldn't record. >> you can see after it was taken out of the bundle of wires, it was >> reporter: carnival telling abc news they found a camera but it was not connected. and saying our security team turned the device over to the fbi for further inspection. we'll have more on how you can protect yourself coming up at 7:00 a.m. with your "gma first geobegegio

making purchases. according to "usa today," a coalition of consumer and public safety advocates hope the major study from the university of michigan medical school will spark a change. they sent a letter to the federal trade commission asking the federal agency to investigate the preschool app market and to end what they insist are deceptive practices. google wants to hear from you when it comes to new ways to use art fishificial intelligenc. the company is offering $25 million to fund projects that will benefit society. it's part of a new initiative called ai for social good. the goal is to ease worry that computers will take over human jobs. instead, google wants to find new ways to help people. the company says it's already using tech to do tngabcts pdi the grant winners w. ng the'suestio autrancis silic valley are known for the tech industry, but a new report finds they're not the best cities for tech workers.

we'll take you outside. gorgeous look. plenty of stars out there from our camera atop pier 15. san francisco skyline in full view. napa at 41. 48 in concord. 49 in hayward. the same in san jose. currently san francisco, you're sitting at about 54 degrees. the big story in our hills today, that increased fire danger because of the winds. red flag warning is in effect for our north bay hills and also our east bay hills. that does contain guerneville, livermore, east foothills. winds out of the north are gusting sometimes close to 55 miles an hour. combine that with low humidity during the daytime, that means any fires that start can easily spread. so, that will last until 6:00 tomorrow morning. later on today it's a breezy, bright looking day. 70 in san francisco. 75 in oakland. the same in san jose. about 77 in napa. here's the accuweather seven-day

open involving a chp officer on the westbound side of 680. police are only saying there was a short police chase and then a crash. we have a red flag warning for the north bay hills and east bay hills for the next 24 hours. dry, gusty northwest winds could gust as high as 55 miles an hour. number three -- a 3-year-old boy is in the hospital after he was shot. it happened near the san leandro border. number four -- president trump is apparently considering ending birthright citizenship. this could have a big impact on children born here. we'll have more coming up at 5:40. number five -- the president traveling to pittsburgh as funerals for the victims of the synagogue shooting begin. the president is expected to meet with families, first responders and possibly the rabbi where rd'ssacr

because winds in our hills have been gusting as high as 30 miles an hour right now. we do expect them to stay active. the 12-hour day planner showing you windy in the morning. then the winds will somewhat subside, kind of ebb and flow throughout the day. we'll call it breezy but the fire danger remains high. it's a bright looking day with temperatures in the coast afrom the 70s to 80s. we have a couple traffic alerts. two current sig alerts working. one in the san francisco area, the south part of san francisco. northbound 101 connecter to northbound 280, just a sig alert issued. three northbound lanes of 101 are blocked. that's causing a delay coming from sfo. northbound 101 near seminary drive, two-car crash and that's currently blocking all lanes. all lanes are back open following yet another crash. this one was on 580 in pleasanton on the westbound side before you get to 680.

chp did not reveal a lot of information. they would only tell us there was a short pursuit and that was followed by a crash. and the vehicle that we saw that had a lot of damage on the tow truck there, that was not a chp patrol car. we're sorting out what exactly happened. that was towed away and no one was short. we had a full closure of the freeway. all lanes reopened about 15, 20 minutes ago. all residuals are clearing out. more breaking news. this time on the peninsula. a family of eight has escaped a house fire in south san francisco. >> firefighters battled smoke and flames at this home on fairway drive earlier this morning. it heavily damaged the house. a woman that lives there says she woke up around 1:00, smelled something burning and found the garage on fire. she says her family recently moved into this rental home. she doesn't know what started the fire. nobody got hurt. developing news in the east bay. this morning we are waiting for an update on a 3-year-old boy

who was shot in oakland. the shooting happened last night on roblado drive not far from the san leandro border. police say someone drove that boy to san leandro hospital. he was later moved to benioff children's hospital. we'll stay on top of this story and bring you any information as it comes in during our newscast. the threat of fire danger continues in parts of the bay area. we still have that red flag warning. >> the east bay in particular under close watch. abc7 news reporter matt keller is live in san francisco. matt? >> reporter: good morning. a bad combination for late october. we have gusty winds, low humidities and also the high temperatures. firefighters want to make sure that everyone is being extra careful. with halloween just around the corner here, they want you to think about your decorations. they're asking everyone to not leave anyone with a heat or electric source unattended. it's dry everywhere, especially in the east bay hills.

berkeley's fire chief says the design of the neighborhoods is problematic when it comes to fighting fires. >> neighborhoods were built so long ago with tiny little streets, houses with wood shingle, tree and vegetation growing next to the houses. it's hard to get fire engines in and out at the same time people are trying to evacuate. >> reporter: pg&e has not issued any warning for an emergency power shutoff like they did two weeks ago in lake, napa and sonoma counties. as conditions change, that situation can change as well. matt keller, abc7 news. >> thank you. the president and first lady plan to travel to pittsburgh today in the wake of the worst anti-semitic attack in u.s. history. >> president trump condemned the act of hate but then suggested armed guards could have prevented it. today the president is expected to meet with families, first responders, community leaders

and likely the rabbi of t te of life synagogue. also happening today, three of the 11 victims will be laid to rest. they are brothers cecil and david rosenthal and dr. jerry rabinowitz. the suspect, 46-year-old robert bowers is due back in court thursday. that's when prosecutors are expected to outline their case against him. here in the bay area there will be an interfaith vigil outside san jose city hall. jewish students at sjsu tell abc7 news the attack brought out real fear. >> it breaks my heart when i hear of students tucking in their star of david on campus. >> i didn't wear it on saturday. to me that was very big because i haven't taken it off in like three years. >> that student is wearing her necklace again. tonight san jose city leaders and other religious groups will meet at city hall for an interfaith vigil at 5:00.

we're honoring the victims of the pittsburgh synagogue shooting on the abc 7 facebook page. you can share this badge listing all 11 lives lost during the attack. >> someone fired shots at a republican party office in south dayto daytona, florida. police are investigating the incident as an act of vandalism until they determine a motive. they say the building was empty during the shooting. it happened some time after staffers had gone home sunday afternoon and returned monday morning. a mountain lion is back in the wild after quite a scare. >> officers hauled is out of the bushes after shooting it with tranquilizer darts. the alameda county sheriff's office brought out their drone to keep an eye on him. he was first spotted near hopyard road around 4:30. it was in bushes near an office

building. >> we came outside, there were security guards escorting us to our cars. i wanted to stick around and see what happens. >> officials say the mountain lion is a 9 to 12-month-old male and appears to be healthy. hopefully he's back in the woods where he can be a little safer. time now, 5:37 a.m. the big story we're tracking today is the high fire danger in our hills of the north bay and the east bay. so, a red flag warning is in effect lasting through wednesday morning where those areas shaded in red could see winds gusting close to 55 miles an hour. combine that with low humidity during the day, this combination we typically see it this time of year, means any fires that do start can rapidly spread. so, hour by hour we go. the winds this morning, 8:00, in the north bay especially, they're coming out of the north gusting close to 30 miles an hour. we do expect the winds to ebb and flow throughout the day. by 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 in the afterernoon,otezy out there. that fire danger threat remains

real or 280. i'm told it's not impacting 280, even though that's on the connecter. checking out westbound 92, we had a multi-car crash around the toll plaza. i could see a couple cars on the shoulder. once you get past that, we have two disabled vehicles near the span. and checking out our drive times. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, you're in the red at 53 minutes. the sig alert in the dublin area has cleared. southbound 680, dublin to mission boulevard, 20 minutes. northbound 85, you're still in the green at 15 politics. in the east bay, attorneys for the men charged in the ghost ship fire want a trial to stay in the alameda area. for months the suspects have been talking about moving the case out of the county but

yesterday they withdrew their motion. studies show jurors in alameda are more likely to sympathize with the men. >> we ascertain that the juries here in alameda are more favorable to our cause than other counties. >> almena's attorneys are hoping to have his plea deal reinstated next week while harris' defense team wants to take his case to trial. the criminal trial is scheduled for both in april. outrage at google. buzz feed reports a group of 200 employees plan to protest on thursday. a "new york times" article published last week is fueling this anger. it claims android creator andy ruben was given a $90 million exit package in 2014 after an investigation found he had coerced another employee into google ceo says, no one terminated for sexual harassment

good morning. time approaching 5:44 a.m. looking at the winds in our hills because we have the red flag warning in effect. gusting at 20 at mt. tam. hour by hour we go temperaturewise, starting out in the 50s by 7:00. quickly warming. a nice afternoon to take your lunch outside. 60s and 70s. by 3:00, 4:00 in the afternoon, our warmest spots going near 80 degrees. enjoy. new this morning at our live desk, word of a possible new executive order involving children. in a new interview with axios on hbo, president trump says he is considering ending birthright citizenship. right now, the 14th amendment states babies born on u.s. soil are citizens despite the immigration status of their parents. the president now says he can end all of that with an executive order. no word on when it could happen.

and such a drastic move would likely invite legal challenges, setting up a big constitutional showdown. a warning for parents who will take their kids out trick-or-treating. beaware of drugs that look like candy or toys. >> police in ohio say a 5-year-old was hospitalized after a pre-halloween trick-or-treating event. they found methamphetamine in their system. his parents say he was playing with a vampire mouth toy shortly before he had a seizure. the child is expected to recover. in the south bay, sunnyvale police believe the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash may be trying to leave the country. here's the drive they're looking for. she's 55-year-old re in. a robles. police located the mini van involved in the crash in santa clara on friday. police say an anonymous tip led them to robles. police believe she hit and killed a man on a bicycle.

in the east bay, the warriors are being ordered to pay oakland $40 million for upgrades to oracle arena. the arbitrator says the team has to honor a deal signed in 1996 and pay the remainder of the debt for the work. the warriors say their lease obligation ends when they leave oracle in 2019 for san francisco. the city says taxpayers should not be left on the hook for the money. and in a statement, the warriors said, quote, of course we're reviewing our options at this time, but we've always said, we will fulfill any debt obligations that we owe. happening this morning, candidates for gavin newsom and republican john cox will share te stage in san francisco. no, it's not for a debate. they did it once and i guess that was the only debate we're going to get. their honored guests at former mayor brown's breakfast, which benefits a fellowship program at san francisco state university. walmart wants to help you beat the holiday rush. the company is expanding a
