inspired that attack in the first place. abc's lana zak has new details on his visit. she joins us now from washington where the president is back home. good morning, lana. >> reporter: good morning to you, kendis and lynda. other elected officials had been invited to join the president on his trip to pittsburgh, but they deinedft some family ted officials asked the president to delay his trip. funerals continue today in pittsburgh in the wake of the most deadly anti-semitic attack in american history. the city united in mourning was divided in their opinions of president trump who visited the tree of life synagogue on tuesday. >> very, very sad. hopefully we'll learn a lot. >> reporter: together with first lady melania, ivanka and jared kushner, the president placed stones from the white house rose garden on the stars of david that marked the loss of 11 lives, but local officials had asked the president to delay his visit, a sentiment echoed by

many. >> he is a purveyor of hate speech, and he is not welcome in my synagogue and in my city. >> reporter: more than a thousand protesters and residents gathered nearby. >> it's not about you. let the families grieve. >> reporter: carrying signs that read, words matter, they demanded that the president fully denounce white nationalism. meanwhile, as the fbi continues their investigation, it seems no one really knew the killer. described as a demon on social media, in person robert bowers seemed to be a ghost. no family, no apparent friends and neighbors say in the 18 months he lived at his current address, he never even opened the blinds. and, kendis and lynda, white house press secretary sarah sanders was asked if the president really missed an opportunity to denounce anti-semitism with this visit. she said he was there intending to show his respect to the family and friends of the victims, as well as all jewish americans. >> lana zak, thank you so much.

well, president trump is suggesting another hard-line immigration promise just days before the midterm elections, vowing to end birthright citizenship with an executive order. now, the constitution actually guarantees citizenship to anyone born on u.s. soil regardless of their parents' immigration status. the president claims his lawyers have assured him that he can end that unilaterally, but house speaker paul ryan among those siding with legal scholars who say it would take a constitutional amendment. well, you obviously cannot do that. you cannot end birthright citizenship with an executive order. we didn't like it when obama tried changing immigration laws via executive action. i think in this case the 14th amendment is pretty clear. >> well, this latest thinking by the president follows his decision to send more than 5,000 troops to the southern border and try to ratchet up warnings about a caravan of migrants. still hundreds of miles away from the u.s. border. still hun from the u.s. border. special counsel robert mueller appears to be the target of a possible smear campaign.

mueller's office is asking the fbi to investigate claims from several women. they say they were offered money in exchange for fabricating sexual misconduct claims against mueller. one of the women says she was approached by someone representing a right-wing conspiracy peddler named jack burkman. multiple women who claim they were contacted say they either have never met mueller or never saw him act inappropriately. the death of notorious boston crime boss james whitey bulger has been ruled a homicide. and now we're learning how the 89-year-old was reportedly killed in prison. this morning, the fbi's investigating the killing of boston mob boss whitey bulger just hours after he was transferred to this west virginia prison. >> you're going to be responding to the maximum security. they advise cpr in progress. >> reporter: bulger found unresponsive in his cell at 8:20 in the morning tuesday. an anonymous source telling "the new york times" bulger was beaten so badly, he was unrecognizable. he's reportedly the third inmate

killed at that maximum security hazelton facility this year raising questions about whether the prison is understaffed. it was in south boston where young james bulger earned the nickname whitey because of his light hair. he spent time in alcatraz returning to boston where he'd rule the streets playing a role in at least 11 murders. in 1994 a corrupt fbi agent tipped bulger off telling him he was about to be indicted, and he disappeared. authorities searched more than a decade for him releasing surveillance video ultimately tracking him down through his girlfriend, catherine greig, to this santa monica apartment where police found more than $800,000 in cash stashed inside the walls. and now the families of his victims coming to terms with his sudden death. >> we want his name to just go away, but now that he's dead, his name goes away, and he goes away with it. couldn't be a better thing. >> very actually happy he's dead. i'm very pleased that he's dead. my family can -- we can get on with our lives now. >> "the boston globe" reports one possible suspect in bulger's

killing is a convicted mob hit man from massachusetts serving a life sentence at the same prison who may have been seeking revenge for bulger's time as an fbi informant. a major break overnight for investigators looking into the crash of lion air flight 610. officials say divers may have located the fuselage off indonesia's coast. a search team heard a pinging sound, which could be coming from the black box. the plane crashed into the java sea monday with 189 people on board. remains of at least 48 people have now been found. experts from boeing are arriving in indonesia today. the company delivered the new 737 to lion air just two months ago. the same plane reportedly flew erratically the day before the crash. well, time now for a look at your weather for this halloween wednesday. plenty of storms taking shape in texas and louisiana that could give trick-or-treaters a real

we're back with new details about this fiery helicopter crash in upstate new york that left two people dead. the chopper hit a power line in beekmantown near the canadian border. the state power authority was using the helicopter at the time and the vi the power line. two others were injured as well. in the meantime, in central florida what's being called an experimental gyrocopter crashed into a mobile home and caught fire leaving two people dead. both victims were on the aircraft including a man who was described as an avid test pilot. there was one person on the ground was treated for burns. investigators will focus on school bus safety as they look into the tragic deaths of three children in rochester, indiana. the 9-year-olds and her 6-year-old twin brothers were killed walking to their bus. police say a pickup truck drove past the bus and hit them.

the driver of the truck now faces reckless homicide charges as the children's family tries to come to terms with the grief. >> he didn't lose one kid. he lost all of his kids. what do you tell your little brother? how do you tell your little brother that it's going to get better? you can't. >> police say the stop arm on the bus was down when the kids were hit. the national safety council says 70% of school bus-related deaths occur outside the bus. a rare investigations undeway in aarica where a scientist is accused of stabbing his colleague because he kept giving away the endings of the books he was reading. what? the russian man reads to pass his free time while working at this research facility. the victim survived. it's believed to be the first attempted murder case in antarctica. that is just unbelievable.

over troubling footage showing preschoolers taking part in what she calls a toddler fight club. in the 2016 video, teachers are seen cheering the young children on. one jumps enthusiastically while the other helps students put on toy fists. one little boy caught on camera tries to break up the fight. >> no, get out the way. >> reporter: the incident came to light after a 10-year-old boy captured this video on his ipad showing his 4-year-old brother allegedly being forced to fight with another student. >> they're fighting. >> if he wouldn't have had is ipad on him that day, who knows if we even would have found out about this. >> reporter: the boy's mother, nicole merseal, immediately reported the incident to the school and to authorities. now, merseal is suing the day care for more than $25,000 and hopes the state will reconsider filing charges. in a statement to abc news, the department of health confirms that they concluded their investigation in 2016. and says the day care was asked to take additional steps to

ensure staff were trained and knowledgeable about age-appropriate activities for children. but merseal is still hoping for harsher consequences. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> such disturbing video there out of st. louis. in the meantime, a husband and wife found dead at yosemite national park were, indeed, take a selfie when they plunged 800 feet from a cliff. this is according to a family member of the young couple known for posting daring photos like sitting on the edge of the grand canyon and jumping from planes. in one post they even warned other daredevils about taking photos from dangerous heights. a recent study found more than 250 people have died taking selfies over the last seven years. and emmy and tony award clt to fame. crime stopper. william daniels and his wife say they were home when an intruder tried to kick down their door. the 91-year-old who played mr. feeny on "boy meets world" quickly turned on the lights, spooking the would-be burglar. >> we were asleep, and i heard bang, bang, bang, and it was
