>> police say it was an unprovoked attack. the victim a 19-year-old woman taken to the hospital in sandal jose. a suspect in custody. >> sources tell you the victim didn't know her attacker. >> reporter: that's right. this was a random attack. this happened as students and staff were gathering for a halloween party and parade. for some, it is the highlight of the year. but students say they could not believe this happened on their campus. they're stunned about the events. for students at cabrillo college, a sense of security shattered after a 19-year-old woman was attacked while having lunch. students can't believe it happened. >> especially in the cafeteria during the middle of the day. >> the sheriff's office says just before noon, a 40-year-old man walked into the cafeteria and randomly stabbed the victim with a knife. he's been identified as steven

wooding, a former student known to law enforcement. the college got a restraining ordering against him after authorities said he spent months harassing staff members on the phone. >> it doesn't look like there was any relationship or any reason to attack her other than him coming campus to do this. >> the suspect whose name has not been released has spent time at a state psychiatric hospital in the past. they praised the cafeteria manage here they say apprehended the suspect until law enforcement could arrive. >> great to see people taking care of each and acting without pausing to think about what might happen to their own selves but how to prevent harm to others. >> students say while it is unnerving, they're grateful wasn't worse. >> it is the society we live in. for sure since this happened halloween night, who knows? it could strike another.

>> reporter: the cafeteria is closed right now but classes have not been canceled. college officials tell us they do have counsellors on staff and on site. tonight for anyone who needs that help. moments ago i spoke to the taf tear why, to the cafeteria manager. but he said it all happened so fast. the victim in stable condition at a hospital in san jose. abe 7 news. >> thank you. there was extra police presence at novato high school today after a student at another school made threatening statements. police say several novato students received those statements. they talked about the sexual orientation of some students. police searched the suspect's home and found a pellet gun. he was arrested on suspicion of criminal threats and committing a hate crime. nearly two years after the fire

that killed 36 people, crews could be tearing down ghost ship warehouse. we're learning new details about who they blame for that fire. these the signs posted outside the oakland warehouse near 31st avenue and 13th street. the 30-day notice signs were posted at the he said of september so it appears it could be any day. they both face charges. according to new court documents, the owners blamed their electrician. they say he lied about being a licensed contractor. investigators have not been able to pin down the exact cause of the fire. a bit of a face-off today. the santa clara fire chief was on one side with verizon on the other. the issue was data throttling and a communications breakdown during one of those massive fires we endured this summer.

it is often you see the mayor handing out leaflets with someone in a hotdog costume. however, they're trying to toreh out to voters. local measures are listed on a double-sided, three-page ballot. it will be a test on how much they want to solve certain issues. >> if you look at the people, what is the most important es t. homelessness and affordable housing. >> reporter: this resident says he can understand that some voters might get fatigued. >> yeah. there will be various levels of fatigue that people will go through. people will finish it. >> reporter: if passed, it would provide housing for many while proposition two would provide housing and treatment for those with mental issues. >> it is not quite that dense of a ballot. we want to make sure that people

know. those affordable housing and homeless issues you care about, we're addressing them to this ballot. >> this veteran who servedafann. hope people will turn out to vote. >> i've had friends and comrades staying on my couch months at a time. they can't afford the ridiculous prices to get an apartment or a home. >> early voting such as what is underway here at the library, or voting by mail, are two ways to beat voter fatigue. over 129,000 people have already turned in their vote by mail ballots to santa clara county. david louie. >> a lot of people have already voted. maybe you. according to the if i recall political data, 2.5 million californians have already cast their ballots. more than 40% are from democrats. 30% are from republicans. across the country, new numbers from the university of florida show a total of 24 million

and the legacy on the field. >> i can do better than that. i can tell you what we prepared looking back on the great willie mccovey. >> mccovey was a man who always had a big smile for you and i like that. i like that. that's why he is so great. >> loved and admired for his genuine demeanor off the field, on it he could be frightening. he was once called the scariest hitter in baseball. born january 10, 1938, in mobile, alabama, willie lee mccovey made his debut with the san francisco giants at the age of 21. he was an instant sensation, going 4 for 4 in that game. despite playing just 52 games in 1959, he garnered national rookie of the year. for 14 years the man known as stretch for his 6'4" frame protected willie mays in the

batting order. >> you talk about a first baseman, i hear all these things about this guy can stretch, this guy can hit. mike did all those things. >> and that's why big mac was the first ballot hall of famer in 1996. in 22 seasons he hit 521 homers. he batted .270 and collected 2211 hits. he was a six-time all-star, the national league's mvp in 1969 and he was a three-time home run champion. despite all the individual accolades, the ultimate team goal evaded mccovey. his only world series appearance came in 1962 and it ended in heart break. >> i had a line drive that i thought and everybody else thought was a base hit. we knew it was second base but i didn't know richardson was standing there. i found out later that he wouldn't have been playing me over there but he went over

there to smooth out the infield a little bit. before he could get back before to what he would have done, i guess terry was already in the process of making his pitch. >> they traded mccovey to san diego. oakland would purchase his contract in the 1976 season. he would play 11 game for the a's before making a triumphant return to the giants in 1977. at the age of 39, he hit 28 home runs and was named the come back player of the year. among his teammates he'll be reynold for his unequalled power at the plate. >> he was a guy who could hit the ball a long way, so hard. i remember, he won a lot of games for me. every time i pitched. every time he hit a home run. >> the most feared. he was awesome, he was quiet, but when he spoke, you listened. >> perhaps there's no better

series. he exemplifies the spirit and leadership of mccovey. it was doubled mccovey cove. in 2003 he opened mccovey's restaurant, a place for fans to gather and reminisce of days gone by. and he received his own statue, adjacent to mccovey cove. it was renamed mccovey point at china basin park. >> i guess i've come a long way from mobile, alabama, to having a statue here in san francisco. thank you. >> the great willie mccovey. the giants tweeted this out just after 5:00. it is with great sad pnls we announce that the giants legend and hall of famer willie mccovey passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 80 after losing his battle with ongoing health issues.
