revealing a controversial new campaign ad which some are calling racist. >> the biggest headline is how the president responded when we asked him whether he is always truthful. abc's lana zak begins our coverage from washington. good morning, lana. >> reporter: good morning to you, linsey and kendis. it's officially november. that means we are five days away from the midterm elections, and president trump insists he's not fearmongering even as he plans that major force of military force at the southern border. in the final push towards election day, president trump says he'll send three times the number of u.s. military personnel currently in iraq to the southern border. >> we'll go up to anywhere between 10,000 and 15,000 military personnel. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview, abc's jon karl asked the president about that number. >> okay, you're talking about 10,000, maybe 15,000 active duty u.s. military to the border. >> yeah. >> more than we have fighting the taliban in afghanistan. more than we have fighting isis in syria. >> yeah. >> you're really going to do that? >> it's very important. it's very important. we have to have a wall of people. you have caravans coming up tha

constitution. he's now sparring publicly with republican speaker paul ryan, who says that's not possible. linsey, kendis. >> lana zak in washington. thanks, lana. if early voting is any indication, this midterm election will be one for the record books. more than 20 million early voters have now cast ballots nationwide. many states have already seen bigger numbers than during the five days to go. well, several legal battles are being fought over voting rights ahead of election day. the latest is in north dakota where a native american tribe is suing to block the state's voter i.d. law, which requires a street address to vote. many native americans living on reservations say they only have p.o. boxes. breaking overnight, divers say they have recovered the black box from lion air flight 610. the box was reportedly found in the mud on the sea floor among other debris from monday's crash. the boeing 737 plunged into the sea just 13 minutes after taking off from jakarta with nearly 200 peoplen ervicely two

sources say investigators appear to be leaning toward technical failure as the cause of the crash. back in this country, a small plane made an emergency landing on interstate 95 last night east of raleigh, north carolina.wh hdeared an the emergency. no one was hurt, and no cars were hit. now to that growing mystery here in new york. police are trying to figure out why two sisters from saudi arabia turned up dead in the hudson river and whether a bid for asylum played any role in their deaths. the sisters' bodies were bound together at the wrist and ankles with duct tape. >> feet taped, taped up and facing down. one has hands with tape. >> reporter: police now believe 16-year-old tala and 22-year-old rotana farea were alive when they entered the river. the saudi citizens had been living in fairfax, virginia. nypd detectives are now there looking into the sisters' lives.

>> detectives' work has filled in many of the pieces, but there's still some gaps that we would like to fill in. >> reporter: there are reports the sisters had requested asylum in the u.s. and the saudi government ordered the family to return to the kingdom. the saudis deny ever making that order, and police are treating the sisters' deaths as suspicious but say it's too early to call it murder. they say they have a good idea of where the sisters may have entered the river, and they haven't ruled out the possibility that it was a suicide or accident. an autopsy, of course, will determine the cause of death, and police say the sisters were first reported missing back in august. investigators are now trying to determine what happened between then and last week when their bodies were discovered. just two days after the school bus crash in indiana that made national headlines, yet another child has died after trying to board a bus. a 9-year-old boy in northern mississippi was killed after being hit by a truck while crossing the road to his bus. the truck driver now faces charges.

meanwhile, the indiana driver charged with killing a 9-year-old girl and her two brothers crossing the road to get to their bus tuesday tells investigators that despite the flashing lights, she didn't recognize the vehicle was a school bus until it was too late. the school district is now moving the bus stop to a quieter street. a recent national study found 70% of school bus-related deaths occur outside of the bus. time now for a look at your weather for this thursday morning. this tornado in katy, texas, was one of several that touched down in the southern part of the state as part of a severe storm system. thousands of people lost power and some people had to be rescued from their flooded roads, but no injuries or significant damage reported. the storms are now over louisiana and mississippi. dozens of counties and parishes are under tornado watches until daybreak.

children in new jersey. 27 cases of the adenovirus are now associated with the facility where an investigation found problems with infection control. many of those affected were described as medically fragile. meanwhile, a different strain of the virus has now been confirmed at another facility in the state. an airline employee who tried to sleep off a night of drinking found himself in trouble and in another state. he took an unplanned trip from kansas city to chicago after dozing off inside the cargo hold of an american airlines jet. police in chicago brought him in for questioning. they say he told them he was hung over and decided to take a nap. he survived because the cargo hold was pressurized. he was not arrested, but he's been suspended from his job. breaking overnight, a new accusation against former hollywood mogul harvey weinstein. a woman is accusing him of sexually assaulting her when she was 16 years old.

weinstein harassed and emotionally abused her for nearly a decade. weinstein's lawyer calls the allegations preposterous. more than 1500 workers at google are planning to walk off the job today to protest the company's response to those sexual harassment claims there. it follows a "new york times" report about top executives receiving generous severance packages despite claims of sexual misconduct. among them, a reported $90 million payout to one executive accused of coercing a worker into a sex act. a supreme proposal has been revealed between two of the most famous legal minds in u.s. history. back when they were just students at stanford law school, william rehnquist proposed marriage to sandra day o'connor in a letter. o'connor turned him down. she was already dating a man she would later marry. the proposal is revealed in a new book about o'connor due out next year. rehnquist served as chief justice, and o'connor was the first woman appointed to the court. they remained friends until his death in 2

fans of luxury cars will not want to see this. a huge fire swept through this port in northern italy where more than a thousand cars were damaged or destroyed. >> wow. >> most of them were maseratis that were ready to be shipped. it apparently started as a battery fire and spread during a storm. well, back in this country, a major development in a story that we've been following about the death of a young football player at the university of maryland who suffered heatstroke after a workout. >> a backlash erupted on campus after the head coach was allowed to keep his job then hours later the school has now changed its mind. this morning months of upheaval and backlash at the university of maryland have come full circle for its football team as its head coach is left without a job, fired just one day after being reinstated. it all began back in may with the death of offensive lineman jordan mcnair. the 19-year-old suffered heatstroke during a workout and died two weeks later. that led to coach d.j. durkin

being placed on leave as investigators looked into whether the staff contributed to mcnair's death while bullying players and fostering a culture of humiliation and intimidation. then the flash point tuesday when the university's board of regents gave coach durkin his job back claiming the program's culture did not have a direct link to mcnair's death sparking outrage from his parents. >> it just didn't help. didn't help at all. >> i feel like i've been punched in the stomach and somebody spit in my face. >> reporter: student and faculty leaders, even state lawmakers demanded the school reverse its decision. some players even walked out of a team meeting. lineman ellis mckennie tweeting his anger saying, a group of people do not have the courage to hold anyone accountable for his death. it only they could have the courage that jordan had. it's never the wrong time to do what's right.ll iotoet durkin an embarrassment, then late wednesday the reversal. school president wallace loh who's already agreed to step down next year over the scandal

announced he's firing durkin saying in a letter, this is a difficult decision, but it is the right one for our entire university. >> there will be no third chance for any of those involved to get this right. >> despite losing his job, coach durkin will get paid the remaining $5 million from his contract. some scientists are sounding a new alarm about climate change. this time they're focusing on the oceans. a new study warns the oceans have been soaking up 60% more excess heat in the last quarter century than first thought. the researchers warn it means we have even less time to reduce carbon emissions, and the faster the oceans warm, the faster sea levels will rise. turning now to sports, a major league baseball legend has passed away. hall of famer willie mccovey ay the all-time home run list.

these frightening scenes taking place all across the city. you can see in the video a big crowd of people standing around near 880 and gish road. cars speeding in a circle. cars backed up at the stop light. chp said they had intelligence that cars were going to take over intersections in san jose. that's what happened. officers say it is risky for people to attend the side shows. >> it's dangerous. you are putting yourself at risk. you're standing around vehicles doing erratic maneuvers with drivers who are not professionals and could potentially cause injury or death. we highly encourage people not to come to these events. it's really not worth it. >> at least two people allegedly involved in erratic driving after were arrested.
