[speaking foreign language] >> the federal government sees veronica as someone who can run

away. she wears an ankle monitor issued by immigration and customs enforce am. at first it was a badge of honor in the struggle to gape asylum, but it turned into a symbol of shame. still she said she will fight to stay in the u.s. as long as she can. she left el salvador a year ago by joining another caravan. she wants americans to understand many people from central america have nothing left but fear and hope. [speaking foreign language] >> translator: there has been some times when someone puts a gun to your head and you think it's all over. >> fearing for her son's life, she asked her mother to travel with the 15-year-old and join one of the caravans headed for the u.s. >> she said she wants her son with her, even if they both have to live on the streets. in the meantime, she is staying in the east bay with a family who has opened their home. >> people like veronica are coming because they have incredible fear where they live. to come here to find a place where they can be safe to find a place to thrive and grow, it was important to us. >> now veronica aguilar can only hope for the right outcome. 48 employees have been fired in the past two years for sexual harassment. >> i personally would prefer an apology and transparency. >> these are no longer pr issues, but cultural issues. >> she spent her entire career investing in tech companies and helped fountain all female investor conference. women in tech are forcing real change. >> what was new is that you had a group of women that were in powerful positions at their firms. we sat there and said enough is enough. >> i always spoke to a google hr employee who said she participated in the walk out to show human resources does support them. there is protocol for when a case is reported. she wouldn't go into what that was, but they did investigate.

>> it starts with household trash, but you can furnish a whole house with the stuff you find. >> dumping is clearly visible, even at the no dumping signs. >> this has been sitting here for about two months, at least. this pile right here. >> tim and megan drive this road almost every day and they are not happy with the view. >> you see mattresses and refrigerators and washers and driers. it's disgusting how people just dump trash and think they can get away with it. >> it's a problem with all 680 miles of roads. >> the county's public works department said his crews pick up trash at the trouble spots at least once a month. when it comes to keeping up -- >> buyer we can't. >> with the health officials, they spent months putting together this report. it shows the county spent $1.2 million picking up illegally dumped trash. dumps spots rose from 2016 to 2017 and projected to rise

another 5% this year. the report recommends educating people about things like yearly bulk waste pick up provided without charge once or twice a year and dropping the legal hammer on illegal dumpers. >> we are looking at ideas like how can we increase the penalty. how can we take away a person's vehicle who is caught dumping illegally? >> penalty would be one part education and prevention and removal would be other parts. the current fine is $1,000 if you are caught. that's a lot of money for a homeowner, but for an illegal or unlicensed contractor, they may be willing to take a risk of getting away with it enough times that $1,000 wouldn't be that bad. eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> eric, thank you. >> still ahead at 5:00, hotel strike one month later.

the strike for better pay and better benefits, they say san francisco officials are getting concerned because they are worried about how it could have an impact on tourism and economy. marriott said they hoped to resolve many months ago and said they remain committed to negotiating in good faith. >> the strike at the san jose marriott and seven other hotels involves around 2700 union representative employees. the lack of progress prompted hillary ronan to convene a special hearing tomorrow. marriott international's president and ceo was invited, but said he won't a tent. replacement workers are being bussed at $17 an hour, hired by a contractor. in san jose with 200 workers on the ticket line, it appears managers are doing the work. >> it's a lot of management

level people from other hotels have been working here. also some temp workers. >> a spokesperson for marriott's corporate office did not respond to questions about business loss because of the strike. a 16-year marriott employee believes the hotel has been impacted. >> we heard the restaurants are closed and they are only serving breakfast in the morning for the elite guests. they are closed for lunch and dinner because all the servers are outside. >> that was confirmed by a guest. >> the restaurants are closed, but they have a commissary where you can get coffee and sandwiches. not full-service, but it works. >> local 19 in san jose including cooks, bus people and housekeepers. >> who is making up your room? >> that i don't know. it will be interesting to see what happens when i get back. >> negotiations are continuing.
