good morning on this friday. i'm kendis gibson. good morning on this friday. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm linsey davis. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." it's been a deadly week for school bus accidents. five students have died in four separate accidents in indiana, mississippi, pennsylvania and florida. at least five other children have been hospitalized, too, with serious injuries. the election countdown. president trump holding rallies in west virginia and indiana today. the vice president will join him in the hoosier state. and former president obama hits the trail in georgia for gubernatorial candidate stacey abrams. google employees around the world took to the streets, walking off the job to protest the company's alleged mishandling of sexual misconduct allegations. this follows a report that the company ignored accusations against senior executives.

investigating what led a vehicle to barrel into two adults and at least five children waiting to be picked up. two of the children suffering serious injuries. >> there is a lady that was holding one of her -- the little boy, and the little boy -- when she got hit, the little boy flew out of her hand, he hit the ground and she flipped and hit her face. >> reporter: the ambulance rushing to the scene also getting into an accident. two firefighters transported to the hospital as a precaution. while in pennsylvania police say a motorist was unaware they fatally struck a 7-year-old waiting at a bus stop near his home. the school bus driver finding him. these incidents following the death of a child in mississippi on wednesday and these three siblings killed while crossing this country road in indiana. the hood of the pickup that hit the children mangled. >> going from home, to the bus stop, going to school. we have to pay attention. there is a major problem of distracted driving in this country. >> reporter: police don't know what caused the accident at this

school bus stop here in tampa but the driver is cooperating with police. so far no charges have been filed. victor oquendo, abc news, tampa. >> and our thanks to victor. apparently there is a correlation between this time of year and a spike in these kinds of accidents because as we're all about to do this weekend as you turn back the clock, it gets dark earlier. so children are leaving for school when it is dark and returning home when it is dark in many places. >> it has been dark already in many places. >> right. >> i was taking a cab home in manhattan yesterday and we stopped for the school bus but so many other vehicles kept going, including a city bus. it was an incredible scene. all right. moving on now to president trump who is stoking fears on immigration again. with a last-minute pitch for votes, the president told supporters in columbia, missourf they don't want america to be overrun by masses of illegal aliens and giant abc's jonathan karl was there. >> reporter: in these final days

of the campaign, president trump is using the trappings and power of the presidency to make illegal immigration a central issue. bashing democrats from the white house. >> you can come up with the greatest border plan, the greatest immigration plan, you won't get one vote from a democrat. >> reporter: he's promising a new executive order to make it harder to seek asylum and talking about how he's sending u.s. troops to the border to stop a caravan of migrants. >> they will do the job. they're setting up right now and they're preparing. >> reporter: he has promised up to 15,000 military personnel, that's roughly the same number of u.s. troops fighting the taliban in afghanistan. but the troops at the border can only offer logistical support for the border patrol. backstage at his rally in florida, i asked him about that. >> the active duty military. you know the law. i mean, you're the president. they can't arrest people crossing the border. >> well, it depends. national emergency covers -- national emergency covers a lot of territory. they can't invade our country.

of mailing more than a dozen pipe bombs to prominent democrats and others criticized by president trump. none of the devices went off but cesar sayoc faces nearly 50 years in prison if convicted. he's expected to be moved from miami to new york. today is the final funeral for the victims of the pittsburgh synagogue massacre. 97-year-old rose mallinger lived in the squirrel hill neighborhood where the shooting took place. she was also the eldest victim. her daughter was also injured in the shooting. a tennessee inmate has been executed by electric chair. edmund zagorski was the first man to die by electric chair in that state since 2007. he picked this method of dying over lethal injection saying it would be quicker and less painful. the last-minute appeal to the supreme court was denied.

extreme weather is on the move eastward as it does. this storm system here is now over the interior east, from the gulf of mexico up to the appalachian region. the same weather system brought flooding and possibly a tornado to the biloxi area. other damage was reported as well. the bad weather is on the move eastward overnight, and by this afternoon the heavy rain and strong winds will be hitting the coast. the system then moves up into new england tomorrow. the u.s. ambassador to russia has skin cancer. jon huntsman jr. told a utah newspaper he was diagnosed earlier this year with stage one melanoma. melanoma has a 91% survival rate in the u.s. when caught early, which this was. skin cancer tends to run in families and daughter abby huntsman told her colleagues on "the view" she's been treated recently for melanoma, too. sometimes you find love when you're not looking for it. that's the case for two marathon runners, one of whom can't see. >> now they are getting ready for the race of their lives.

children and two adults were hit by a driver while waiting for their school bus. two of those kids were seriously injured. a witness describing the scene. >> there was a lady that was holding one of her -- the little boy and the little boy -- when she got hit, the little boy flew out of her hand. he hit the ground and she flipped and hit her face. >> wow. police are trying to figure out what caused that accident there in tampa. the driver is cooperating with the authorities. earlier this week, you'll recall those three siblings died in indiana while crossing the road to reach the school bus. in a dramatic show of solidarity, google employees around the world from new york to singapore walked off the job. they were protesting the tech giant's alleged mishandling of sexual misconduct allegations. abc' kayna whitworth has all the details. >> reporter: in new york city, the sign "time's up, tech." across the country in san francisco, "don't be evil."

investigators have begun investigators have begun downloading the data from one of the flight recorders on board the indonesian jetliner that crashed. it was recovered yesterday in about 100 feet of water. the american-made 737 disintegrated when it crashed into the sea at a high speed. the recorder could provide some crucial information about what went wrong. all 189 people on board were killed. turning now to some frightening moments for passengers aboard a carnival cruise ship. >> the carnival sunshine was just a few hours out of port canaveral, florida when it suddenly tilted to its side. here is abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: drama on the high seas. these images coming in from a carnival cruise ship still at sea showing utter chaos in the

the anti-anxiety drug ativan along with other drugs were in his system. new research finds college football players are suffering lasting effects from head trauma and doctors in florida found biomarkers in players' blood, indicating traumatic brain injuries. those markers were elevated before the season. information one doctor called shocking. also players never diagnosed with concussions still showed reduced cognitive abilities. all right. this is an interesting one. a new york man is suing hershey, blaming their black licorice twizzlers for his heart disease. david goldberg says in the lawsuit, listen to this, he consumed a pound of the candy a week for years. >> well, okay. >> the 73-year-old alleges in the lawsuit that hershey knew the twisty, chewy ropes could cause heart problems but failed to warn consumers. in a statement, the candy maker says all of their products are

>> troops have a right to act in self-defense but a retired army general tweeted it would be unlawful for a soldier to shoot at someone throwing a rock. today the president is campaigns for republicans where red state democrats are locked in tight races. the biggest caravan heading to the u.s. has now dropped to about 4,000 people, down from 7,000. so far nearly 3,000 migrants have applied for refugee status in mexico. 1,500 will remain there for a new jobs program and more than 900 are returning home to central america. here at home, a new development this morning in the catholic church sex abuse scandal. the diocese of peoria, illinois, has forced three retired priests to step done over credible allegations involving the sexual abuse of minors. the alleged abuse occurred 30 to 55 years ago and has been reported to the state's attorney. the three can no longer function as priests in any public capacity, wear clerical garb or the roman collar.

the protest during the national anthem took on a new look thursday night. a san francisco 49ers cheerleader took a knee before the niners hosted oakland. it's believed this is the first time a cheerleader has knelt to protest racial injustice. colin kaepernick's protest started when he was a member of the 49ers during the 2016 season. the turmoil around the university of maryland football has cost another official his job. the chair of the school's board of regents has now resigned. the decision to reinstate dj durkin caused an uproar. he had been on leave after a player's death in june. this week durkin was fired just one day after he had been reinstated after campus protests. simone biles says she kind of bombed at the world gymnastics championships. if that's the case, we should all have bad days like that. >> she still finished with a
