good morning, lana. >> reporter: good morning to you, kendis and linsey. president trump says that he will change the rules of asylum saying that he will deny asylum to anybody entering the country illegally. instead he argues that they must present at ports at entry where he says they will be held now in tent cities. >> we're not letting them into our country. >> reporter: just days before the midterm elections, president trump is campaigning hard against a group of migrants seeking asylum and illegal immigrants. >> if you don't want america to be overrun by masses of illegal aliens and giant caravans, you better vote republican. >> reporter: the president says he may deploy up to 15,000 military troops to the u.s. border. that's roughly the same number deployed to fight the taliban in afghanistan. under the law, the troops at the border are only allowed to offer logistical support but the president said military force

could be engaged if the migrants throw rocks. >> we'll consider it. i tell them consider it a rifle. when they throw rocks like they did at the mexico military and police, i say consider it a rifle. >> reporter: those comments prompted general martin dempsey, the former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, to tweet a wasteful deployment of over-stretched forces would be made worse if they use force disproportional to the threat they face. they won't. the president said he would make changes pledging to house migrants in tent cities along the border believing in the final days before the election, that will mobilize voters in a key demographic. >> i don't want them in our country, and women don't want them in our country. >> reporter: according to the latest abc news/"washington post" poll, independents have expressed broad dissatisfaction with president trump, so turning out the base becomes essential for republicans. linsey, kendis. >> the clock ticking down to election day. lana zak, thank you. the last-minute scramble for votes is attracting heavy

hitters in one of the most hotly contested races in the country. oprah winfrey hit the campaign trail in georgia trying to convince voters to make stacey abrams the nation's first black female governor. vice president mike pence held a dueling rally in support of the republican candidate brian kemp. >> for anybody here who has an ancestor who didn't have the right to vote and you are choosing not to vote wherever you are in this state, in this country, you are dishonoring your family. >> i'm kind of a big deal too. i got a message for all of stacey abrams' liberal hollywood friends, this ain't hollywood. this is georgia. >> oprah even surprised residents in one neighborhood as she went door to door trying to get out the vote. former president obama will campaign for abrams today and president trump heads to georgia sunday to support kemp. a federal judge has rejected a last-ditch effort to exempt

native americans from a voter i.d. law in north dakota. the law requires voters to have a residential street address, but native americans often don't use addresses on reservations. the lawsuit claims the law is causing mass confusion, but the judge ruled that blocking that law so close to the election day would create just as much confusion. we turn now to the worldwide walkout at google. thousands of workers have walked off the job to protest how the company handles sexual harassment. this morning the workers have listed their demands, and the company is responding. [ chanting ] overnight these images of google workers walking away from their desks in protest have skyrocketed around the world. >> it's a good thing that's happening that we're coming out and standing up for ourselves. >> reporter: employees from california to new york, the uk and asia furious over what they say is google's lenient treatment of executives accused

of sexual misconduct. >> time's up and this is the best way that we can do that. >> reporter: organizers of thursday's walkout claim a culture of complicity and dismissiveness at google. >> take seriously claims of people who are harassed and respond to them appropriately and not sweep them under the rug. >> reporter: it all comes one week after a "new york times" story detailed allegations of sexual misconduct against andy rubin, the creator of google's android software. the report claims an internal investigation found allegations against him credible yet rubin walked away in 2014 with a $90 million severance package. rubin insists "the times" story is inaccurate saying these are false allegations that are part of a smear campaign by my ex-wife to disparage me during a divorce and custody battle. >> for every story in "the new york times," there are thousands more at every level of the company, and many have not been told. >> reporter: google says it supports the employees who participated in thursday's

walkout adding, we are taking in all their feedback so we can turn these ideas into action. but workers want specific changes. they're demanding google end pay inequality, issue reports on sexual harassment and create a better process for reporting complaints. in an email to employees, google's ceo said in the last two years nearly 50 people have been fired for harassment including many senior managers and none got severance. at least five children have now died after crashes at school bus stops across the country this week. the latest came thursday when a second grader was killed waiting at his bus stop in pennsylvania. the alleged driver who left the scene has now been questioned by police. in the meantime, in indiana overnight, a vigil was held for the 9-year-old girl and her two brothers who were killed walking to their bus on tuesday. the dark mornings this time of year before the clocks are turned back can make bus stops

more dangerous, but there are safety experts who say it's a year round problem and parents should talk with their kids and their bus drivers. >> what a student should be taught is to stand back about six feet so that the bus can enter safely. the driver will tell them when it's safe to enter or when it's safe to leave the bus. >> reporter: with the increase in distracted driving, one recent survey estimated there are more than 15 million driving violations near buses during the school year. time now for a look at your weather on this friday morning. a close call for this man in houston who barely avoided getting crushed by a falling tree yesterday. the western gulf coast is now cleaning up from the severe storms and the flash flooding on thursday. right now two systems are moving east and coming together with storms hitting from the florida panhandle all the way to canada. by tonight the atlantic coast will see heavy rain and stroj winds with a rainy saturday expected in much of the

police say the driver was distracted after a passenger who had missed her stop starting fighting with him. two people remain missing this morning. we're learning more about the killing of notorious boston mobster whitey bulger in prison. "the wall street journal" reports that the killer waited until bulger was led out of his cell to go to breakfast before they attacked him and "the boston globe" reports he was beaten by two inmates, both from massachusetts who moved out of the view of surveillance cameras indicating the attack was planned. the family of the late singer chris cornell is suing his doctor over cornell's death. the sound garden front man took his own life last year at the age of 52. his age says his doctor was negligent because of overprescribed the recovering addict mind-altering drugs. the doctor's attorney insists cornell's treatment was within the standard of care. the calendar says november.

that means some radio stations are already playing holiday music and the holiday shopping frenzy is already getting under way. a new report predicts online shopping sales will increase by 15% this year. totaling $124 billion. here's when to expect the best deals. experts say black friday is still the best day to buy electronics but the sunday after thanksgiving is the time to shop for clothes and appliances and the monday after thanksgiving better known as cyber monday is when you'll find the best discounts on toys. a doughnut shop owner on the west coast is feeling the love from his customers. john chan and his wife stella have run doughnut city in seal beach, california, for nearly 30 years. when customers found out that stella had suffered a brain injury, they wanted to do whatever they could to help, so they've been buying up all of the doughnuts every day so that chan can close the store early and spend more time with his wife at her rehab facility.w ol? john chan says that he's very grateful and stella is improving.

off the california coast when a fishing boat came just close enough for a daring rescue. it all starts with crew member sam synstelien on the front of a boat. another crew member telling him to jump into action. >> get it, sam. sam, jump on the whale right now and cut it. >> reporter: the crew said it called the coast guard and was told there was nothing the coast guard could do. >> we saw a big whale and it was like getting cut with this line that was attached to the sea floor. >> reporter: so risking his life, synstelien goes for it. >> cam -- sam, cut it. cut it right now. it's right there. sam, right there. swim. swim. >> reporter: with a knife in his mouth, he climbs on top of the whale. synstelien hanging on as the whale thrashes his tail. >> oh. >> reporter: but then he's already cut the buoy line and

>> reporter: the picket line is still active. they start chanting again at 7:00 in the morning. they all plan to go to the hearing at city hall. they hope to be heard there before that hearing. workers on the picket line say they are hoping to testify before the board. they want to share their personal stories of working two jobs and deciding to go on strike to fight for more money. workers from seven hotels in san francisco and one in san jose have been on strike for a month. and they think they are having the intended effect to hurt the marriott's bottom line. >> they are only serving breakfast in the morning for regular guests. but they are closed for lunch and dinner because all the servers are outside. >> the restaurants are closed. they have a nice commissary
