live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> it's clear as a bell tonight as we look live from the east bay hills. but this weekend, it will be hot, dry and dusty, which means critical fire conditions across much of the bay area. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. firefighters are on high alert. >> earlier a grass fire that spread into trees turned tonight's rush hour into san jose. >> it burned along 880 near mineta international airport. the highway patrol closed southbound lanes. officers allowed stranded drivers to make u-turns to get off the freeway. firefighters are battling a building fire that spread in western sonoma county. the flames have burned about one-half acre of grass after the

fire started about 8:45 this evening. this is a ram camino ra set up to spot wildfires. crews credit extra staffing this weekend with helping them make, quote, good progress against the flames. the calendar might tell us it's early november, our fire conditions feel more like late summer. a red flag warning is in effect. hills around the bay area are warm and dry. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with more. sandhya? >> ama, fire danger is elevated with good reason. take a look at the wins right now. mount diablo gusting out of the north to 38 miles an hour. they've been steadily increasing. red flag warning for the north and east bay hills starts at 1:00 a.m. saturday for solano county at midnight, and it runs until 6:00 a.m. sunday. it's a north-northeasterly wind, gusts 50 to 60 miles per hour combined with very low humidity, which is concerning. so when we get that down sloping wind, watch what happens to the humidity levels. 6:00 a.m. tomorrow pretty good humidity. but when that wind continues to

station, and that's where the man could have died. >> i wasn't supposed to be there. i was out eating with my family. >> vincent seals cleans bart trains at the end of the line. on sunday night he picked up an extra shift at the dublin-pleasanton station. >> one of my coworkers came down and started screaming someone's dead, someone's dead. >> instinctually, vincent rushed to the front car. >> i can't say what made me take action, but when i seen him and seen his eyes in the back of his head, i immediately jumped in there. and i had to do something. >> the 20-year-old man was unconscious, his lips already blue. >> that's when i picked him up and placed him on the floor. >> how long he performed cpr. >> straight down, straight down. >> he is unsure. >> it was just like i was focused on him at that time. i felt something taking me and say do you want me to take over? i said no, i got it. for some reason, i felt connected with him. >> it was a bart officer. she helped with breathing. the man was conscious when paramedics took him to the hospital. >> can you imagine saving

somebody's life? a day that he is not even supposed to be here? >> vincent learned cpr at a previous job. his boss took cpr when she started at bart and would like to see the training offered to all employees again. >> it was offered. in 30 years i've been here, i've never had to use it. >> i was just here at the right time. so he is the hero for coming back and for fighting. he wanted to live. he wanted to survive. >> now because of patient privacy laws, vincent has no idea how the young man is doing. all he knows is that bart police told him that the man had just turned 20 years old on sunday. vincent says he'd like to connect with him to let him know that people do care, even strangers. live in millbrae, katie utehs, abc 7 news. >> a great story. thank you very much. the battle over rent control in santa cruz is getting more divisive tonight. what some people are calling a racially charged flier was handed out at a recent even focusing on the housing crisis

in santa cruz county. abc 7 reporter amanda del castillo is live in the south bay. amanda? >> dan, i spoke with a man behind these controversial flyers. he tells me this has nothing to do with race. others aren't convinced. long-time landlord darius says it all started with his concern over measure m and a google search. >> googled gang images. i had some for aryan brotherhood and ms-13. >> he put them on flyers with the message meet your new neighbors. he says the posters were in response to a specific portion of measure m which would prevent landlords from evicting who bring in any number of families. >> when you rent a unit, how many people stay, there how many people with k be in the unit, that's a big problem. >> abc 7 news has chosen to blur the image. critic says his message is clear. >> he is talking to the like

underlying racism that is very present in santa cruz that maybe people aren't willing to admit. >> hirshfield says when he showed up to an event addressing the housing crisis in the county, hirshfield only saw the flyer with ms-13 gang members, a move he says ultimately connects only people of color to crime. on friday, other measure m supporters marched against his actions. >> racist actions have to go, hey hey, ho ho. >> he is apologizing and understands now his actions were ill timed and his picture choice was in poor taste. still, he stands behind his message. hirshfield says measure m supporters don't want that apology. instead he said those who oppose the measure aren't doing enough to distance themselves from him. amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. >> thank you. count on abc 7 news for live

coverage on tuesday. abc news network will have coverage of the biggest races around the country, beginning at 5:00 p.m. and we'll have live, local election coverage throughout the evening for you, including on abc 7 news at 9:00, on kofy tv 20, and then at 11:00 p.m. right here on abc 7. >> new developments now. oakland marriott workers have ratified an agreement to end their strike. more than 200 city center employees will go back to work tomorrow. they've been calling for better pay for nearly a month. this agreement does not impact san francisco or san jose marriott locations. in the north bay, northbound 101 lanes will shift overnight as part of the marin-sonoma narrows project. caltrans will shift traffic to a new alignment from the landfill exit. you can see where the shift is going to take place precisely, bringing the lanes closer to southbound traffic. speed limits in that area will be reduced. it will be finished and ready for commuters early tomorrow morning we're told.

no additional lanes will be added. it's one of the most anticipated openers in all of california. we're talking about the start of recreational dungeness crab season here in the bay area. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen joins us from pillar point harbor in half moon bay, where everyone is counting down to their crab dinner. kate? >> hi there, ama. the crab season starts at midnight. you can see this parking lot here at half moon bay is full of trucks and rvs. lots of people to start crabbing. now since it's illegal for one more hour, i can not show you an actual dungeness, but i can show you this nifty crab ruler that shows you at least how big the dungeness must be if you're going to catch them and keep them. >> we spent the last two weeks getting the bet ready here for crab season. so it's a brand-new boat that we just got. we brought it up from san diego. so it's been about eight dines water. this is the crew that was on the boat for the whole trip. a lot of people on a small boat.

to real fireworks in the santa clara county sheriffs race with the election next week. sheriff laurie smith's opponents are raising questions about how how she sought endorsements. >> two of the opponents allege smith improperly tried to hand out political favors in exchange for their support. i-team reporter dan noyes is here with the story you'll see only on abc 7 news. dan? >> ama, dan, john hirokawa was once second in command to sheriff laurie smith. now he is providing the toughest challenge ever to laurie smith, who has held the office for almost 20 years. this story began when martin monica called me three weeks ago. he says after that loss, sheriff laurie smith and her second in command, undersheriff rick sung met martin at this peet's coffee, trying to get him to

publicly endorse her. >> she brought internal documents that have jobs for us to apply for and get. >> she also said well, you can do this one here, or, you know, whatever you apply to, give me a call, use my name and we'll get you there. >> after martin monica says laurie smith sent this text saying hi, martin, have i some info for your son. so do you have some time to meet again? also, thank you so much for endorsing me. but he is not endorsing laurie smith. >> it wasn't the right thing to do. i vote for people that i believe will do the correct job. >> former lieutenant for sheriff says he saw something in wrong with his meeting with rick sung at agave restaurant across from city hall. >> the sheriff would like to know if you would endorse her. >> he said sung made an offer he believed came on behalf of the sheriff. >> what if we brought you back as a captain. and i said, well, that's interesting. >> after that meeting, salcido sent a meeting to the district

attorney, requesting a confidential meeting regarding unethical if not illegal actions by laurie smith during the current cycle. i've experienced offers from sheriff smith in exchange for support. john chase from the d.a.'s public integrity unit answered not everything that is unethical or even illegal is a crime. and later declined to investigate. did he indicate that this is just the way things -- >> he did say this is politics. you've been involved in politics long enough to know that it goes on all the time. i said well that doesn't make it right. >> john chase declined an interview but sent a statement. the promised promotions under the circumstances they were allegedly made could not be proved to be crimes. sheriff laurie smith declined to be interviewed but messaged me that this desperate last-minute mudslinging is lie. you can smell the desperation coming from my opponent and his supporters. her opponent john hirokawa tells
