live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> it's clear as a bell tonight as we look live from the east bay hills. but this weekend, it will be hot, dry and dusty, which means critical fire conditions across much of the bay area. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley.

>> and i'm ama daetz. firefighters are on high alert. >> earlier a grass fire that spread into trees turned tonight's rush hour into san jose. >> it burned along 880 near mineta international airport. the highway patrol closed southbound lanes. officers allowed stranded drivers to make u-turns to get off the freeway. firefighters are battling a building fire that spread in western sonoma county. the flames have burned about one-half acre of grass after the fire started about 8:45 this evening. this is a ram camino ra set up to spot wildfires. crews credit extra staffing this weekend with helping them make, quote, good progress against the flames. the calendar might tell us it's early november, our fire conditions feel more like late summer. a red flag warning is in effect. hills around the bay area are warm and dry. abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with more. sandhya? >> ama, fire danger is elevated with good reason.

take a look at the wins right now. mount diablo gusting out of the north to 38 miles an hour. they've been steadily increasing. red flag warning for the north and east bay hills starts at 1:00 a.m. saturday for solano county at midnight, and it runs until 6:00 a.m. sunday. it's a north-northeasterly wind, gusts 50 to 60 miles per hour combined with very low humidity, which is concerning. so when we get that down sloping wind, watch what happens to the humidity levels. 6:00 a.m. tomorrow pretty good humidity. but when that wind continues to ramp up, down to the teens in places like fairfield, lake berryessa. we drop you down to the single digits by 4:00 p.m. saturday around playses like fairfield, which explains why that fire danger is rung high. ama? >> thank you, sandhya. and a red flag warning means fires can easily start and spread. download the abc 7 news app to get alerts if that happens. and you can customize the app geographically so we'll let you know if something is happening where you live. new at 11:00, a bart train

cleaner sprang into action earl this week, saving a man with cpr. >> the unconscious man's lips had already turned blue by the time help arrived. katie uteh is at the station where he says he is not a hero. >> he says he is not hero, just in the right place at the right time. normally vincent works here at the millbrae bart station, but he happened to pick up an extra shift at the dublin pleasanton station, and that's where the man could have died. >> i wasn't supposed to be there. i was out eating with my family. >> vincent seals cleans bart trains at the end of the line. on sunday night he picked up an extra shift at the dublin-pleasanton station. >> one of my coworkers came down and started screaming someone's dead, someone's dead. >> instinctually, vincent rushed to the front car. >> i can't say what made me take action, but when i seen him and seen his eyes in the back of his head, i immediately jumped in there. and i had to do something.

>> the 20-year-old man was unconscious, his lips already blue. >> that's when i picked him up and placed him on the floor. >> how long he performed cpr. >> straight down, straight down. >> he is unsure. >> it was just like i was focused on him at that time. i felt something taking me and say do you want me to take over? i said no, i got it. for some reason, i felt connected with him. >> it was a bart officer. she helped with breathing. the man was conscious when paramedics took him to the hospital. >> can you imagine saving somebody's life? a day that he is not even supposed to be here? >> vincent learned cpr at a previous job. his boss took cpr when she started at bart and would like to see the training offered to all employees again. >> it was offered. in 30 years i've been here, i've never had to use it. >> i was just here at the right time. so he is the hero for coming back and for fighting. he wanted to live. he wanted to survive. >> now because of patient privacy laws, vincent has no idea how the young man is doing.

all he knows is that bart police told him that the man had just turned 20 years old on sunday. vincent says he'd like to connect with him to let him know that people do care, even strangers. live in millbrae, katie utehs, abc 7 news. >> a great story. thank you very much. the battle over rent control in santa cruz is getting more divisive tonight. what some people are calling a racially charged flier was handed out at a recent even focusing on the housing crisis in santa cruz county. abc 7 reporter amanda del castillo is live in the south bay. amanda? >> dan, i spoke with a man behind these controversial flyers. he tells me this has nothing to do with race. others aren't convinced. long-time landlord darius says it all started with his concern search. >> googled gang images. i had some for aryan brotherhood and ms-13. >> he put them on flyers with the message meet your new

neighbors. he says the posters were in response to a specific portion of measure m which would prevent landlords from evicting who bring in any number of families. >> when you rent a unit, how many people stay, there how many people with k be in the unit, that's a big problem. >> abc 7 news has chosen to blur the image. critic says his message is clear. >> he is talking to the like underlying racism that is very present in santa cruz that maybe people aren't willing to admit. >> hirshfield says when he showed up to an event addressing the housing crisis in the county, hirshfield only saw the flyer with ms-13 gang members, a move he says ultimately connects only people of color to crime. on friday, other measure m supporters marched against his actions. >> racist actions have to go,

san francisco or san jose marriott locations. in the north bay, northbound 101 lanes will shift overnight as part of the marin-sonoma narrows project. caltrans will shift traffic to a new alignment from the landfill exit. you can see where the shift is going to take place precisely, bringing the lanes closer to southbound traffic. speed limits in that area will be reduced. it will be finished and ready for commuters early tomorrow morning we're told. no additional lanes will be added. it's one of the most anticipated openers in all of california. we're talking about the start of recreational dungeness crab season here in the bay area. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen joins us from pillar point harbor in half moon bay, where everyone is counting down to their crab dinner. kate? >> hi there, ama. the crab season starts at midnight. you can see this parking lot here at half moon bay is full of trucks and rvs. lots of people to start

crabbing. now since it's illegal for one more hour, i can not show you an actual dungeness, but i can show you this nifty crab ruler that shows you at least how big the dungeness must be if you're going to catch them and keep them. >> we spent the last two weeks getting the bet ready here for crab season. so it's a brand-new boat that we just got. we brought it up from san diego. so it's been about eight dines water. this is the crew that was on the boat for the whole trip. a lot of people on a small boat. and spent the last two weeks getting ready. >> you're not sick of each other yet? >> i can't answer that! >> for the past 20 years, woody woodward has spent the first week of november in half moon bay fishing for crabs. >> beginning this season we're not taking anything less than likely a 7-inch. >> that would be a jumbo dungeness. >> people are nuts for it. they love it. >> whoa! >> but it's not all about the crab. woody introduced me to some of his friends at the pier and their giant game of jenga which

to real fireworks in the santa clara county sheriffs race with the election next week. sheriff laurie smith's opponents are raising questions about how how she sought endorsements. >> two of the opponents allege smith improperly tried to hand out political favors in exchange for their support. i-team reporter dan noyes is here with the story you'll see only on abc 7 news. dan? >> ama, dan, john hirokawa was once second in command to sheriff laurie smith. now he is providing the toughest challenge ever to laurie smith, who has held the office for almost 20 when martin monica called me three weeks ago. he says after that loss, sheriff laurie smith and her second in command, undersheriff rick sung

the organization. let's focus on the weekend weather forecast. it still feels awfully warm. >> it really does. sandhya patel is here with what's coming our way. >> we're going to see warmer weather tomorrow, and then we're going down after that. dan and ama, i want to show you a sunset that is worth checking out over and over again from our su sutro tower camera. you see the colors thanks to the high clouds that were passing through our region. temperatures a good 4 to 8 degrees below where they were yesterday. we did have fog earlier this morning, but we're going to go in the other direction. as this wind, take a look here, the wind is going to pick up out of the north-northeast. we're already starting to see it over mount diablo. it's a down sloping wind, and that helps to push the temperatures up. that's also what's going to keep our fire danger up. as the temperatures rise, tomorrow you might want to think about heading to the coast. a bright and sunny beach forecast. santa cruz 83 degrees, sunshine, mild to warm.

stinson beach, 1. baker beach, 70. it's november. not too often that people around the country can say this. half moon bay, 69. pacifica, 70 degrees. and if you're going to monterey, 71 degrees. live doppler 7 right now showing a few high thin passing clouds. right now those temperatures are still in the comfort zone with 50s and 60s. a live look from our east bay hills camera, as we look clearly across the bay. visibility is good right now. fire danger elevated this weekend. sunny and warmer tomorrow afternoon. and just a reminder, daylight saving time ends sunday morning. so you want to foul back one hour. in the hills it will be windy, but for the rest of you no solano in the hills, calm, temperatures to the mid 40s to the mid-50s. you will need to dress in layers for the morning hours. for the afternoon you can pretty much shed those. look at the temperatures. south bay close to 90 degrees. gilroy, 88. 82 in san jose. 81 san jose, cupertino 83 degrees. low 80s from palo alto to menlo park.

watch this, now. crews rescuing a hiker from a sheer vertical face of a mountain in yosemite. the rescue last week was joint effort between the chp and the yosemite crews. the hiker from colorado coming into the helicopter now slip and fell on mount watkins. he tumbled about 50 feet before his safety rope caught him. his arms and legs were both hurt so he could not get down the mountain himself and needed to be rescue. but at least that safety rope held. >> absolutely. scary. all right. time to get to sports. >> larry beil is here. >> even the rescue makes me kesey. whoa. in sports, klay thompson did not go for 50 tonight. sorry. but he did heat up when it but he did heat up when it mattered here are the facts.leading attacks against prop c. the city's chief economist says prop c
