>> there is interest in local races and propositions that have people turning out in droves. >> we begin our coverage tonight with abc news reporter katie utehs live in san jose. >> reporter: on sunday morning there were people lined up waiting to get in when the office opened at 9:00 and stayed consistently busy throughout the day, people dropping off ballots and registering to vote and ballots being sorted that have been mailed in. the santa clara county registrar of voters brings in an additional 300 to 400 people to help with elections, it's so busy. this afternoon stayed hectic. elections officials say they're seeing a lot of first-time voters and new citizens participating so that's exciting for them. there's certainly an exciting feeling to the place from people dropping off their ballots to the county workers that are

hustling. traditionally midterms have lower turnouts, but this year is shaping up to be different. voters we spoke with like the convenience of early voting, including same-day registration and on-demand ballot printing. the weekend availability is key for many. >> if i don't have to rush over here after work or before work, i'm trying to avoid that. so that's why i'm here. >> back in 2010, it was more about 67% and we're thinking the interest level is about the same, so we're predicting about a 60% to 70% turnout this election. >> reporter: there are many locations to drop off your ballot or vote in person in santa clara county. there are seven satellite locations from gilroy to palo alto. you can drive up and drop your mail and bat lot at the santa clara county registrar's office. the office just closed at 6:00 but turns around and opens up again at 8:00 a.m. all of the satellite offices stay open until 6:00 tomorrow.

no excuses, a lot of availability to get your ballot in. live in san jose, katie utehs, abc 7 news. >> plenty of ways to vote, katie, thank you. early voting has been under way for several days in san francisco and even on a sunday, people were waiting in line. cornell barnard joins us in studio. >> nearly 20 million registered to vote in the secretary of state's office, the big question now is how will they vote? it's the sunday before the mid terms and the line was out the door for early voting. at san francisco city hall, kyle wayne brought his son. >> he was easier to come out on a sunday and come as a family and vote. >> reporter: inside it was crowded with voters casting their ballots. the director of elections says early turnout has been good at 60% >> we're trying to make the access to voting and getting ballots as easy as possible.

>> reporter: drop-off kiosks are set off outside city hall, from rent control to the gas tax and electing a new governor, voters have a lot on their plate. >> this is the first election of the trump era. >> reporter: political science professor melinda jackson predicts voter turnout will be high tuesday with younger voters making a big showing. >> based on the data we're seeing so far, we do see a bump in voter registration among younger voters. we do think we're going to see higher turnout among younger voters. >> this is the perfect person for this time and this era for the city of oakland, and that's why i'm here supporting this mayor. >> reporter: recording artist and oakland native m.c. hammer brought the power power in the re-election of libby schaaf, he one of many encouraging people to vote. >> i encourage read up on the h

issues, come and express your vote and voice this tuesday. >> they expect voter turnout will be big but it's a tight race. will president trump rally his base and create momentum on tuesday or democrats show up and vote for a change in the house and senate. no doubt about it, enthusiasm is high on both sides. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> cornell, thank you very much. a turn california red rally at the state capitol got heated when counter protesters turned up. >> no more hate in our city! >> the rally was formed to promote conservative issues ahead of the mid terms. counter protesters chanted "immigrants are welcome" and "no more hate in our state." in 2016 a clash at the state capitol erupted in rils. as a safety measure, dozens of police lined the streets today. the organizer behind this rally said he called for a peaceful protest, and just wanted to inform people. early voters have been in force across the nation and the numbers easily surpass those

seen for the last midterm elections in 2014. >> reporter melissa rainey says first time voters. >> reporter: long lines stretching down city blocks. people waiting hours to cast their ballot in the 2018 midterm election. >> every vote counts. if i didn't vote, it would be on my conscience. >> reporter: based on information provided by data company catalyst, at least 12 states have already surpassed early voting numbers seen in 2014. in kansas and west virginia, early voting has outpaced the 2016 presidential election. >> georgia, georgia, georgia. >> reporter: in georgia, the race for governor has brought major star power to the peach state. and a record number of voters to the polls, number more than the amount at the same point in the last midterm election. one possible reason for the boost, first-time voters. >> i think it's time for us to kind of get our voice out there, something that i don't think we did very effective in 2016. >> reporter: catalyst found of the states that analyzed

napa county will pay around $90 million after fires, floods and an earthquake from the last five years. >> while federal and state reimbursements and shoosinsuran will cut the cost, the county paying a hefty price. 20 seconds of shaking from the 2014 napa quake cost the county, listen to this, more than $37 million in bills that are still coming in. three years later, storms slammed the county resulting in more than 40 road projects cost being $26 million. and finally last year's north

bay fires added millions more in overtime costs and damage. some relief is on the way for the south bay's housing market. our media partners at "the mercury news" report a dorm style apartment building for adults is coming to downtown san jose. there are already several buildings in san francisco and los angeles, but this would be the largest one yet with nearly 800 units, 800 units. the rooms are small with private bedrooms and a shared common area. rents could start at $800 and go all the way up to $2,500, which is well below the going rate for a one-bedroom apartment in san jose. star city of san francisco is behind the project. new developments with the potentially dangerous amounts of lead found in some of the water fountains at san francisco schools. fountains at five public schools had unsafe levels. fixing them with range from replacing fountains to cleaning out pipes. in the north bay a firstlee. boats on richardson bay have received warnings the police can remove their vessels if they've been left in sausalito for 72 hours. police say it's due to increase in complaints including theft. boaters have frequently parked themselves off sausalito for years to avoid payingor oo ofor berth. we'll take to you a colorful kay of the dead celebration in the east bay.

it's a clear really quiet night. the winds have diminished thankfully in our hills, so we'll see 40s in the north bay, and some of our coolest spots. elsewhere around the bay shoreline temperatures dropping into the low 50s in the overnight hours. the biger picture on live doppler 7 along with satellite it's quiet over california, just some high clouds streaming in from time to time. any moisture along the west coast is to our north around portland and seattle. the reason why this ridge of high pressure just sending that storm track well away from california and that's not going to change the next seven days unfortunately. 12-hour day planner, sun is up at 6:39, 40s to low 50s. grab the jacket. in the afternoon, it's mild and sunny with temperatures in the 70s, if not near 80 degrees in our warmest spots. 74 in san jose tomorrow, the same in santa clara. 71 and sunny in mountain view. 70 for menlo park. 68 the high in san mateo.
