>> there is interest in local races and propositions that have people turning out in droves. >> we begin our coverage tonight with abc news reporter katie utehs live in san jose. >> reporter: on sunday morning there were people lined up waiting to get in when the office opened at 9:00 and stayed consistently busy throughout the day, people dropping off ballots and registering to vote and ballots being sorted that have been mailed in. the santa clara county registrar of voters brings in an additional 300 to 400 people to help with elections, it's so busy. this afternoon stayed hectic. elections officials say they're seeing a lot of first-time voters and new citizens participating so that's exciting for them. there's certainly an exciting feeling to the place from people dropping off their ballots to the county workers that are

hustling. traditionally midterms have lower turnouts, but this year is shaping up to be different. voters we spoke with like the convenience of early voting, including same-day registration and on-demand ballot printing. the weekend availability is key for many. >> if i don't have to rush over here after work or before work, i'm trying to avoid that. so that's why i'm here. >> back in 2010, it was more about 67% and we're thinking the interest level is about the same, so we're predicting about a 60% to 70% turnout this election. >> reporter: there are many locations to drop off your ballot or vote in person in santa clara county. there are seven satellite locations from gilroy to palo alto. you can drive up and drop your mail and bat lot at the santa clara county registrar's office. the office just closed at 6:00 but turns around and opens up again at 8:00 a.m. all of the satellite offices stay open until 6:00 tomorrow.

no excuses, a lot of availability to get your ballot in. live in san jose, katie utehs, abc 7 news. >> plenty of ways to vote, katie, thank you. early voting has been under way for several days in san francisco and even on a sunday, people were waiting in line. cornell barnard joins us in studio. >> nearly 20 million registered to vote in the secretary of state's office, the big question now is how will they vote? it's the sunday before the mid terms and the line was out the door for early voting. at san francisco city hall, kyle wayne brought his son. >> he was easier to come out on a sunday and come as a family and vote. >> reporter: inside it was crowded with voters casting their ballots. the director of elections says early turnout has been good at 60% >> we're trying to make the access to voting and getting ballots as easy as possible.
