. bay area voters casting their ballots early today. this just a preview of the big turnout expected on election day tuesday. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. big voter turnout is expected because of record voter registration numbers in california and at least one local county. >> what's shaping up to be a busy mid-term election. >> reporter: people we talked with are eager to make their voices heard by having their vote counted. in santa clara county a record number of people registering to vote. more than 800,000 people. keep up if you can, in santa clara county where ballots are buzzing through machines taking in early votes.

>> we saw people were lined up when we opened the doors at 9:00. they wanted to come in and vote. >> reporter: voters in san jose and seven satellite offices, hundreds of election officers kept busy this weekend. >> i love that you do have the opportunity to do that because everyone's schedule is different. so i don't have to rush over hereafter work or before work, i'm trying to avoid that. >> reporter: a san jose resident and her mother and sister, showed up to vote in person sunday afternoon. >> i believe this is very important election, so i'm anxious to see how ittttttttt on tuesday. >> i really want to make sure my vote was counted because it's important for me, my wife and my child. >> this is the first election of the trump era. >> reporter: traditionally mid-terms have low turnouts but the current political climate has inspired many.

>> based on the data we've seen so far we do see a bump in voter registration among younger voters. we do think we're going to see a higher turnout among younger voters. >> reporter: santa clara has seen an up tick in first time voters and new citizens registering. >> the latest figures we saw were at over 886,000, and that's the most registrations we've ever seen in santa clara county. >> reporter: san francisco county is predicting a 60% voter turnout while santa clara could be anywhere from 60% to 70%. back in 2014 the numbers were as low as 50%. dion, eric? >> katie, thanks a lot. the battle for prop 8 which would c set an all-time record for spending. los angeles time reports combined both sides will spend over $100 million. >> and both do have one thing in common, the patients. >> reporter: emmanuel gone lez is a kidney dialysis technician,

but the treatment he gives extends beyond his work. >> like my dad who sometimes he's yelling over for a technician to help him because they're taking care of 12 patients at one time. >> reporter: gonzalez is fighting for yes on prop 8. it caps at 15% and pays refunds to patients and insurers for money that's not spent on improving patient care. in prop 8 which was port forth by a labor union would get providers to reinvest in patient care. >> marking up prices 350%. meanwhile too many dialysis patients are dying. >> it's unacceptable. they have the money in order to up keep their facilities and hire more staff, but they refuse to because they're only worried about making money. >> in a climate like mine where there is no private insurance, it is even -- it's a nonstarter. there is no excess profit.

>> reporter: dr. brian long has been working in kidney dialysis for 30 years. he called prop 8 counter intuitive. he says patient death is high not because of conditions but the overall poor health of patients. california can't graduate the number of technicians needed. >> if prop 8 passes thousands of us dialysis patients will be thrown out into the cold. >> reporter: california's legislative analysis office puts their profit at close to $3 billion. gone lez says clinics won't close even if prop 8 passes. >> if the ballot measure tells them -- encourages them to spend more money on quality improvements and staff, how does that equal cutting back on services? it doesn't.

the cause of two head on crashes that put several people in the hospital in contra costa county. at least three suffered injures. a woman tried to speed away after hitting a motorcycle traveling the opposite direction just after 5:00 tonight. >> next thing you know she's trying to turn around, look like she ran over him, and then she came here, fishtailing, went out of control and hit the people in this car and that's where it stopped. and i just hope the man and they're okay. the man on the motorcycle looked like he couldn't survive because she slid under the car and looked like she rolled over him. >> moments later highway patrol says the same 33-year-old woman hit another car head on. officers then arrested her. the victims went to four different hospitals. we now know the name of the man shot and killed by police in danville. yesterday's violent series of events started when officers tried to stop and question the

33-year-old. someone reported he was acting suspiciously. officers caught up with him at front street and diablo road. he later died after being rushed to the hospital. two children allegedly kids napped by their mother have been missing more than 48 hours now. an amber alert was sent out yesterday for diana and her 11-year-old and 1-year-old son. san jose police tell us they were taken during a visit with a social worker friday evening in san jose. mom is believed to be driving a gray 2012 mini cooper with california license plate on your screen there. 6uwl251 possibly headed to colorado springs. it held its first motorcycle training class in three years. there are 16 trainees. that class is required for officers hoping to join the

traffic company. their goal is to reduce injuries and deaths from traffic accidents and to ticket drivers who cause congestion. you may notice some highway signs looking a bit different tomorrow. chp is taking part in browsing driver prevention week. cal trans will use nearly 900 electronic signs along highways to raise awareness for drowsy driving. according to chp going without sleep for at least 18 hours is the equivalent of having a blood alcohol content of 0.05%. it's california it's illegal to drive with a blood alcohol content of 0.08%. mourning the loss of familiar sight after people wrote tributes to a pine tree that's graced the block for more than a century. it appears it tree has died and

opening fire inside a tallahassee yoga studio. the military veteran posted photos on youtube openly posting his racist and misogynistic views to the world. in the videos he alludes to deep rejection he felt from women. police say he walked into the studio friday shortly after class started. he pulled the gun out of a duffel bag he was carrying and began shooting. before taking his own life he shot six people, killing two. the trial of notorious mexican drug lord gets under way with jury selection tomorrow. el chapo is accused of having a hand in a dozen murders and smuggling tons of cocaine into the u.s. the trial in new york is about

drug conspiracy charges. el chapo was extradited from mexico in 2017. he faces life in prison. hundreds pay tribute to three girl scouts and an adult leader who were killed when a pickup truck plowed into them in western wisconsin. people braved cold weather and rain during tonight's candlelight vigil. the four victims included a mother and her daughter. another fourth grader remains in critical condition after picking up litter along the road yesterday. state troopers are arrested a man suspected of the hit-and-run. this is 22-year-old aurora back when she was in good health. according to colorado newspaper the bird traveled with the school's football team to new york this weekend. and west point cadets took the

british airways flight from orlando to london turned into a three day flight from hell for passengers. it began with mechanical problems on thursday delaying the flight for an entire day. the plane took off on friday but a technical issue forced it to make an emergency landing. many passengers endled up sleeping on the floor. finally made it this morning about 77 hour after it was

supposedly originally supposed to take off. > st happened not far from the sacramento airport. 80 beehives were stolen with about 40,000 bees worth up $20,000. >> everything is gone. we feel of course upset and very much hurt. those people were be keepers. they knew something about be keeping. >> i didn't know this but apparently renting out beehives is a big business in california. they're frequently used to pollinate c pollinate crops and are in high demand. we're having sunshine, mild temperatures the next couple of days and we start to see more cooler weather by the weekend. it's going to be a really quiet night. the winds have calmed down in our hills.
