the senate is an uphill battle. >> abc's stephanie ramos has the latest from capitol hill. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: lynda and kendis, good morning. it is the final push to one of the most contested midterm elections in history. president trump campaigning right up until the very last minute while former president barack obama doing the same, stumping hard across the south and the midwest. both of them and their parties trying to do as much and trying to get as much support as they can, right up until the election. the president is closing out the midterm campaign with a mad dash, campaigning today in ohio, indiana and missouri. control of the house and senate is at stake, but so is president trump's agenda. >> we overcame the democrats' smear campaign and confirmed the newest member of the united states supreme court. >> reporter: over the weekend, president trump touting his accomplishments and continued to fuel fear of what a democratic takeover of congress could look like.

our latest abc news/"washington post" poll shows democrats leading republicans by 52% to 44% among likely voters. that lead, narrowing since the summer, but for them to win the senate, they need to gain two seats and that means winning in states won by president trump, states the president is focusing on as he sticks with his key theme, immigration. >> democrats are openly encouraging millions of illegal aliens to break our laws. >> reporter: the caravan of migrants that includes women and children fleeing violence and poverty in central america is still nearly 700 miles away, but democrats, they are out with their own heavy hitter, president obama. >> they are telling us that the single most grave threat to america is a bunch of, like, poor, impoverished, broke, hungry refugees. that's, like, the thing that's really going to threaten gary,

without citing any evidence, kemp's office says it requested an fbi investigation into a failed attempt to hack the state's voter registration system. abrams called that move a desperate ploy during an interview with our atlanta station. >> he is trying to rile up his base by misleading voters yet again. >> reporter: kemp has not recused himself from his position as secretary of state, overseeing the very election he is trying to win, and he is denying claims of voter suppression. >> that is a myth that the democrats bring out every two years. >> oh my god. >> reporter: meanwhile, after oprah started knocking on doors for stacey abrams, this racist robocall started making the rounds. that automated phone message with a phony impression of oprah's voice was dialed into many georgia homes. both campaigns now condemning the calls. >> there is no stopping us. >> reporter: in texas, the

democrat beto o'rourke is fighting a competitive battle with senator ted cruz, trying to become the first democratic senator elected in texas in nearly 25 years. >> you're pro-gun control, you're pro-immigration, you're pro-choice, you're pro-pot. >> let me describe those a little did it differently. >> are they too progressive for texas? >> no. they are of texas. they are from texas. >> reporter: already more people have cast early ballots in texas than the total number of people who voted in 2014's midterms. ted cruz believes he will be the one benefitting from that enthusiasm thanks to the booming texas economy. >> we're saying, you know, you look at that enthusiasm, that room is bursting. we're seeing that all over texas. it's very encouraging. >> win or lose, beto o'rourke tells "60 minutes" he does not plan to run for president in 2020. and join us tomorrow here on abc for all the results and analysis. coverage begins at 8:00 p.m. eastern time. the body of a utah mayor

killed in action in afghanistan is expected to arrive at an air force base today. brent taylor who was a father of seven, was training soldiers when he was shot by one of his afghan trainees. taylor was on his fourth deployment. he is being remembered as a dedicated patriot. >> they thought they could do some good in afghanistan to help the people be liberated, to have the freedoms that we enjoy and too often here in america and here in utah take for granted. he was the personification of love of god, family and country. >> the 39-year-old was the mayor of north ogden, utah. in his last message on facebook, he urged all americans to vote in tomorrow's elections. the trial of the notorious mexican drug lord known as el chapo begins its jury selection today. it is expected to last four months, trial himself. he is charged with trafficking $14 billion of cocaine and other drugs to the united states.

security is extremely tight because of his history of escaping and allegedly running his cartel from prison. >> the reason that there is so much secrecy around this trial is one, because of who it is. he has been accused of numerous murders. the general challenge is making sure it's safe for everyone, including the judge, the jury, even the spectators. >> and the witnesses no doubt. el chapo is being held at a super secure jail in manhattan, but the trial is in brooklyn, so every morning, the brooklyn bridge will be closed to bring him to court, because of security. we're expecting to learn more about the tragedy that left two newlyweds dead after their wedding ceremony in texas. moments after this helicopter lifted off from the wedding near san antonio saturday, it crashed. local media reported will and bailee byler and the chopper pilot were all killed. the bylers were students at sam houston state university. time for a look at your weather for this monday morning.

interstate 70 near vail, colorado had to be closed in both directions. vehicles there slid off the highway with at least one major crash reported. it's the first major snow closure of the season in that area. in the meantime, severe storms are possible today from northern louisiana all the way to kentucky with hail and some tornadoes possible in the overnight hours. the high temperatures for most of the northern half of the country will be in low to mid 50s today. miami, warmest, 85. coming up, saving you money online. the new deal on shipping that takes effect today. but first, what's happening now to this teacher who repeatedly punched a student in class. a gas leak is blamed for causing the explosion that destroyed this mansion outside philadelphia. witnesses say the blast could be heard for several miles. the 9,000-square foot home was apparently being renovated. nobody was inside at the time. now to that violent classroom fist fight at a california high school between a student and a teacher. a confrontation which started over a dress code violation escalated quickly when that student repeatedly called the teacher a racial slur and threw a basketball at him. that's when the teacher just snapped. he was arrested. the student, sent to the hospital. that fight went on there for a little bit.

the community appears split on who is to blame. >> i think it was both of their faults, the teacher and the student. i was scared for the kid, and >> i don't know what's the o. teacher's problem. i know kids, you know, say stuff that they shouldn't, but he should be accountable. >> the 14-year-old student has been released from the hospital. that teacher now facing child abuse charges. "saturday night live's" pete davidson is facing criticism for a joke. he was mocking a candidate from texas who lost his eye while serving in afghanistan. >> you may be surprised to hear he is a congressional candidate from texas and not a hitman in a porno movie. i'm sorry. i know he lost his eye in war or whatever. >> the candidate, dan crenshaw, has responded saying, good rule in life. i try hard not to offend. i try harder not to be offended. that being said, i hope "snl" recognizes that

this was a scene in this was the scene in tallahassee, florida last night as people came together honoring the victims of a deadly shooting inside a yoga class friday, and we're now hearing from the man who fought back against that shooter. >> and we're also learning more about the gunman's past. here's abc's zachary kiesch. >> reporter: new videos of the alleged shooter, 40-year-old scott beierle, the military vet who openly shared his misogynistic and racist views on youtube. >> he only hung out with black people. he brought them in and there were, like, four of them. i felt like saying, that was a pretty good day at the slave auction, huh? >> reporter: he alludes to a deep rejection he felt from women. >> made one date, didn't show up. made another date with another woman, didn't show up. >> reporter: it was said on

friday he walked into a hot yoga studio with a gun and just started shooting. >> i got shot through my thigh. >> reporter: that's when joshua quick jumped into action and took on the shooter. >> a yoga instructor walked over to a system or do something and that's when i heard her scream. i looked up and i do not recall this, but i was told that i yelled, he has got a gun. the only thing that was there that i could think of was this vacuum with a heavy end. the gun stopped firing. i don't know if it jammed or what, so i used that opportunity to hit him over the head wit. >> reporter: he is being dubbed a hero. >> i want to thank that guy from the bottom of my heart because he saved my life. >> reporter: before taking his own life, beierle shot six people, killing two. dr. mary van vessem and maura binkley. a faculty member at florida state university, and the other, a student there. police are still investigating what may have triggered him to kill. zachary kiesch, abc news, new york. the suspect in a hit and run accident that killed three girl

scouts and one adult in wisconsin is due in court today. hundreds gathered in chippewa falls for a candlelight vigil. the fourth graders were struck while picking up trash on the side of the road. one scout remains in critical condition. the 21-year-old suspect was allegedly intoxicated at the time. some would-be burglars got quite a surprise when they showed up at a house in alberta, canada. the homeowner who was at work at the time watched on his phone as a man dressed like a mail carrier checked if anyone was home there in edmonton. the would-be burglar pulled out a radio to call a buddy, and then -- there you go. together, they tried to pry the door open with a screw driver, and that's when the homeowner used the intercom. >> it was kind of, what do i do? and i'm on high alert, and just trying to figure out, what's my next step? everything's happened so quickly. jam a screwdriver in the door. i had found the talk button just as he was able to pry the door open.

yes, we love flying unless it's a nightmare flight as we top off "the pulse here." a trip from orlando to london on british airways was supposed to take eight hours, but took 77 hours. >> they were delayed because of mechanical problems. they were canceled and then they were diverted the next day because of more mechanical problems. passengers took to twitter, pretty unhappy. one saying, deplorable service. i can't believe our children had to sleep on the floor of an airport terminal for 5 1/2 hours. >> another said, imagine having a little daughter spending their birthday in a terminal sat on a rock hard floor and not knowing when they are going to eat, sleep or have a safe place to stay. british airways has apologized. frank wasn't singing about that flight. italy's government has come up with a controversial new incentive to boost their birthrate. >> it's offering a plot of free farmland to any couple who has a third child within the next three years. italy currently has the lowest birthrate in europe.

after hitting a motorcycle on highway 4 and byron avenue. the same 33-year-old woman hit another vehicle head-on moments later. >> next thing you know, she tried to turn around, looked like she ran over him, she was fish-tailing and hit the people in this car. this is where it stopped. i hope they are okay. the man on the motorcycle didn't look like he could survive because she slid over him. >> the motorcycle driver and five people in the second vehicle suffered moderate to critical injuries. they were taken to four different hospitals. >> 4:49. let's get a quick update on weather and traffic. let's start with mike. >> thank you very much, jessica. hi, everybody. amon with light breezes out there.
