open in just one hour, 7:00 a.m. >> we've already seen a big voter turnout, early voter turnout in the south bay. matt keller is live for us in san jose this morning. matt? >> reporter: the quiet before the storm. we have some workers arriving. it's going to be a long day. one of the people who was here early this morning is the registrar of voters and she had a big announcement to make. >> i'm very excited to announce we now have the highest early voting at this point in the election of any time in our history. we also have the highest number of registered voters we've ever had in the history of san sta claire ka county. and in the mail this w m we gey week. >> reporter: more than 885,000 people registered to vote in santa clara county. with that many voters, you need a lot of help. 4,000 election officers are ready to go at 849 polling

places throughout santa clara county. with so many registered voters, that means a record number of ballots cast. you can still sign up for conditional registration, have a ballot printed and vote. that has to happen at the registrar of voters in san jose. it's still not too late to register and vote. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc7 news. the big national story is the balance of power in congress and whether or not the democrats will be able to take back the house of representatives. i want to show you here on my handy computer exactly what we're talking about. here's the makeup of the house. republicans have 235 seats. democrats have 193 seats. there are seven vacant seats. all 435 seats are on the ballot today. either party needs 218 seats to control the house. with the latest projections, here is how things look right now. 168 seats are projected as

solidly or likely republican. then 194 seats are projected solidly or likely democrat. that means that democrats need to get 23 of the 73 seats in play to get control of the house. >> as jessica just mentioned, all 435 seats in the house of representatives are at stake. so are 35 of the 100 seats in the senate. voters in 36 states are also voting for governor, including right here in california. here are our candidates. democrat gavin newsom and republican john cox. newsom has an 11-point lead pgoing into today's election, according to the public policy institute. as you can see, that lead has been shrinking over the last several months. if newsom wins today, it will be the first time a democrat will succeed another democrat since 1886. also want to let you know that facebook is taking down accounts that may be trying to interfere with the election. >> the company's cyber security team announced yesterday it's blocked 30 facebook accounts and

85 instagram accounts suspected of inauthentic behavior. u.s. law enforcement contacted facebook about the suspicious online activity. they are still right now investigating whether those accounts are linked to russia or other foreign entities. pierre thomas spoke on "gma" this morning. >> he says the fbi sent out a bulletin pointing to concerns about possible violence surrounding the election. >> namely that domestic terrorists and islamic radicals might see the election as a time to show fear. at the bottom line, people should go out and vote and let law enforcement worry about this. >> democrats fear voter sue expression while republicans worry about voter fraud. president trump tweeted that law enforcement is looking for illegal voting. thomas says there is little pointing to widespread voter fraud. >> you can still do all the research on the details at

springs yesterday. the children were found safe and unharmed. new at 6:00 -- a new warning about energy drinks. they could be making your blood vessels less efficient. researchers at mcgovern medical school in houston studied more than 40 adults in their 20s. studies show consuming one energy drink made blood vessels less efficient. that could constrict blood flow and oxygen. this could be the reason there are reports of kids experiencing cardiac arrest after just one energy drink. this new research has not yet been published. in the north bay, henhouse brewing is planning to expands. they plan to quadruple its production over the next two years and this will allow it to reach more of the bay area, including san jose and also sacramento. the brewery first opened in 2011. it serves six bay counties. they have 50 employees and as part of the expansion they plan

hollyfield live in larkspur where gavin newsom is expected to cast his ballot this morning. >> reporter: good morning. right here at this polling place, which is about to open, and then gavin newsom and his wife will head down to l.a. that's where they'll watch election returns come in tonight. newsom held his last campaign event in san francisco yesterday. he held it in the mission district and had support from some big democratic leaders there yesterday. governor jerry brown was there and senator ka harris. his opponent, john cox, he campaigned in berkeley and sacramento yesterday. he has already voted. both candidates say they will focus on the high cost of living in california if they are elected. >> the issue that defines our moment is the capacity to address the issue of income inequality and wealth inequality in our society. >> people want to have a quality house that doesn't break their

budget. they want to afford rent, gasoline, afford food on the table. >> reporter: cox has said he wants to fix california and he doesn't see the job of governor as a rung on a ladder. that's a jab at newsom. as there has been talk of newsom one day running for president. newsom says if he is elected today, there will be no delay. he will start the transition process to the governor's office this week. reporting live in larkspur, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. some extra eyes will be on the election in san mateo county. election observers from the department of justice's civil rights division will be supervising there. san mateo county is one of five counties in the state that has no polling places for today's election. instead, voters are required to mail ballots or drop them off at an election office. the monitors focus on making sure those ballots are handled

properly and that election material is available in english, chinese and spanish. the polls open at 7:00 this morning and close at 8:00 tonight. if you have a vote-by-mail ballot, you can drop it off at any polling place by the 8:00 p.m. deadline. you can also mail it. it has to be postmarked by today and received by friday. most mail-in ballots require extra postage. don't forget to sign the back of the envelope. it depends on where you live in the bay area. some counties pay for the postage automatically. some companies make it easy for you to get to the polls. ford go bike will let you check out a bike for free. their bikes are docked in san francisco, san jose and also in the east bay. ride share provider lyft is giving 50% off all rides to the polls. uber is giving a $10 discount on a single ride to your polling place. in san francisco, scooter riders on skip get a $5 certificate for po and tha they polls. yhe

now. they're making snow every morning. this afternoon it will hit the 60s today, tomorrow and 40s thursday before settling into the mid-50s for the weekend. a 32-year-old man wanted for shooting an antioch police officer in the head is in custody. >> amazingly, the police officer is not injured. here's video of the scene near deerfield drive and fawn hill way. officers responded to a call about a dispute between neighbors. the antioch police chief says one of the neighbors showed a gun, shot the officer and then barricaded himself in the home. some people who lived in the area had to evacuate while others sheltered in place. >> all of a sudden i'm out on my patio with my cats and i hear this, come out with your hands up, like two or three times something. i heard that. >> it's very quiet here, so it's a big surprise for us. night.

until 9:00 tonight. the pay is $142 for the day or $152 if they're bilingual. high school and college students across the country will march from the classroom to the polls today. the future coalition is organizing the walk out to vote. this is video of other walkouts. students part of the coalition have organized recently. . this movement follows the deadly parkland school shooting. more than a dozen schools in the bay area plan to participate in the walkout at 10:00 this morning. now your morning money report. sears is close to securing enough money to keep its doors open through the crucial holiday shopping season. >> according to multiple reports, the $600 million bankruptcy financing package could be announced this week. sears filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy october 15th, announcing it would close 142 of its 700 stores by the end of the year. halloween is in the rearview mirror so it's time to look ahead to thanksgiving.
