should be the next speaker. in all fairness, nancy pelosi deserves to be chosen speaker of the house by the democrats. if they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some republican votes. she has earned this great honor. she looked ready to take on the role as speaker. she called today a new day in america. she called for bipartisan ship. >> today is more than about democrats and republicans. it's about restoring the constitution's checks and balances to the trump administration. [ applause ]. >> some have said it is time for a new generation of leadership. but pelosi says she knows the ropes and she is best qualified to lead the party into the future. the crowd was chanting, speaker, last night.

>> we want to turn to the u.s. senate. the republicans have retained control, as we mentioned earlier. they lost two seats, down to 43. a handful of seats are still to be determined. here at home in california, dianne feinstein won against state senator kevin de leon by quite a significant margin. 66% to 34%. he lost despite the endorsement of the state democratic party, which was a clear message party leaders wanted a more combative approach to handling the trump administration. gavin newsom set to be the next governor. he beat john cox with more than half of the votes. here's a look at the latest numbers this morning. you can see 59% for the lieutenant governor to become the next governor with john cox at 41%. 6:55.

in the north bay, results are in for three seats on sonoma city council. > rachel hundley won more than 22% of the votes. most votes despite attempts to derail her campaign with racy photos. she won 22% of the votes. madeline agrimonti won 15% of the votes. logan harvey with 16%. she responded to a anonymous e-mail. it contained a link to a website with photos of her at burning man. the sender threatened to expose her if she didn't drop out of the race. hundley called an attempt to shut shame her and said she would not be bullied. if it feels like there was extremely high turnout for the

midterms, there was. keep in mind this is the tech capital of the world. still collecting ballots in a pretty old school way. the registrar is expecting a turnout of 60% to 70%. it was a hard-fought race for the senate seat in texas. republican senator ted cruz defended his seat in a narrow victory against beto o'rourke. >> he gave a fiery concession speech. he cursed while thanking his supporters. >> i'm so [ bleep ] proud of you guys. >> a lot of people online talking about that moment. he was fired up. he was hoping to become the first democratic senator elected in texas since is t1988. during his speech in el paso, o'rourke said he congratulated senator cruz and plans to work with him to help the people. we are going to keep the election results at the bottom of your screen all morning long. turning now to pg&e.

warning customers in nine california counties that it may preemptively cut off power becausef extreme fire danger.la. pg&e started send texts, e-mails and phone calls to affected residents warning them of a shutoff. it could be turned off tonight through tomorrow. gusty winds and critically dry vegetation is causing that extreme fire danger. mike, for the viewers just joining us, earlier you said that would begin at 10:00 tonight, the high fire danger. >> right. >> you mentioned something important, it is difficult to get the powerback on if they shut it off. >> it is easier to flip the switch and turn it off. but you have to go check all the transformers and those connections. so it may take a day or two. it is not going to be instantaneous. it did rival a lot of people last night. just be want to let you know. thank you for asking that. let's talk about what's going

on. never more than 7 minutes away from my 7-day forecast. mt. tam, the gorgeous sunrise about to develop. warmer than average. breezy. fire danger arrives were tonight. a pattern of warm, dry weather throughout the 7-day forecast. it could continue all the way up to just about thanksgiving. mid to upper 60s. breezy at the coast today. check out san francisco and the rest of the bay. mid to upper 70s. inland, upper 70s to low 80s. tonight's temperatures, there's going to be even more microclimates. our deepest valleys in the north bay will fall into the 30s. the rest of us, mid 40s to 50. when the breezes cake in, we'll be in the 50s to low 60s. take a look at the winds. 10:00 tonight, you can see them moving through the central valley, also in a high fire danger. red flag warning. same time as us. look overnight. they get faster. 30 to 40 by 9:00 tomorrow morning.

good morning, mike. checking out our emeryville camera. looking at heavy traffic on westbound 80. folks trying to get to the bay bridge toll plaza. heading to the downtown oakland stretch. looking at heavy traffic. this is pretty much the norm. no current incidents along this route. we did have an issue around university early this morning and a crash on the san francisco side of the bay bridge. that has cleared. highway 4 to the maze, 35 minutes. bay bridge, once you make it through the toll plaza, in the green at 11 minutes. san francisco to sfo still in the green at 11 minutes. now to the results of the midterm election. despite republicans losing the house, president trump still calling the results a victory. >> he tweeted this morning saying >> despite republicans losing the house, the president is calling the results a big victory. received so many congratulations

all people, all the time, in every single part of texas. >> preliminary exit poll reports asking people nationwide their motivating factor to vote. 38%, opposition to trump. 26% citing their support for the president. the remaining thirds saying he wasn't a factor. overnight the president posting claiming tremendous success even as his party loses control of the house. for weeks democrats campaigned on promising a stronger check on the trump administration. >> anybody anticipating a blue wave tonight is not going to get it. maybe you get a ripple. >> reporter: republicans winning high profile governors races in ohio and florida. the rising star andrew gillum seeking to be florida's first black governor conceded defeat to ron desantis. >> we recognize that, you know, we didn't win it tonight. we didn't win this transaction. >> reporter: the race for

georgia governor still too close to call. >> reporter: president trump is expected to make remarks later on today about those election results. he is scheduled to speak later on at the white house. on capitol hill, stephanie ramos, abc 7 news. stephanie, thank you. a victory for gavin newsom this morning. >> come january he will be sworn in as governor of california. let's look at those results. former san francisco mayor beat republican john cox with a pretty decisive victory with 59% of the vote. newsom tweeted overnight he is honored and privileged to serve as california's next governor. newsom took the stage in los angeles saying the hard work begins today. as of last night he was celebrating, calling his wife jennifer a wonder woman, thanked his campaign. he did not use president trump's name but spoke directly to him, touting the california dream and the importance of inclusiveness. >> we don't demean

and we don't lock kids in cages. meanwhile, his opponent wished newsom success but said that would not come unless he deals with special interests in sacramento. prop 6, majority of voters said no to prop 6. that means the 12 cents per gallon gas tax increase will remain in place. the money will fund road, highway, bridge, and transit improvement projects across the state. >> rent control laws will remain the same with more voters saying no to proposition 10. >> in san francisco, prop is seugz c passed. that means a tax for big businesses to fund homeless projects. >> prop c puts billionaires against each other. >> that's right. with salesforce ceo mark he is

results though he will shell out a lot of money. tprop c will charge big corporations that bring in more than $50 million about a .5% tax. it will go entirely towards homeless programs. this is expected to double what the city spends on homeless services. benioff was air huge supporter of this measure. >> my biggest surprise in this campaign for prop c is the people pushed back the most re the ones who understand the homeless the least. >> the measure also had big name

morning. last night president trump essentially put himself at the top of the ballot. he said it himself. this is a referendum on his presidency. did he win or lose or something else? >> i think it's a little of both. somewhere in the middle. certainly it was expected that the democrats would win majority in the house. and that's what happened. they didn't get the huge big wave they were hoping for. so i think the president can rightly claim a small victory there. of course the republicans did pick up seats in the senate. and where president trump was campaigning the last couple of weeks, those candidates tended to win last night. >> it's a complicated story. you can say this was a huge wave for the democrats. it was a win but not a huge win. they picked up strength nationwide in places where it is very important. ohio and florida. especially when we look two years ago. >> exactly. some of the states unexpectedly

went to trump in 2016 have now shown democratic governors winning in midwest, westbelt, mchigan, wisconsin, places like that that will be important in the next presidential campaign. >> okay. let's talk about nancy pelosi. she has very strong bay area ties from san francisco. now she is poised to stake over a seat from eight years ago to be speaker of the house. but there is this under current in some democrats's minds that perhaps she is not the right leader for democrats at this time. >> yeah. and i think this reflects a lot of what we are seeing with our divided politics. and also within the two parties. the republicans have had a tough time getting a speaker and lining their party up in congress as well over the last few years. now we are seeing a little bit of the same on the democratic side. we have some debates and some struggles within the party as well.

i think the democrats are going to focus on income in equality, access to education, health care, those kind of bread and butter democratic issues. >> going to finish on a local issue, this california issue. this is prop 10. prop 10 failed. it would have expanded the ability for local cities to essentially make their own rules when it comes to rent control. voters said, no, we don't want that.

is that a surprise this morning? >> not a terrible surprise. but i think it does reflect the fact that we are still debating how best to address housing affordability. clearly the voters have said no to rent control at least for now. i don't think this issue is going away, though. i'm sure we will see more attempts to make affordable house anything california because right now it is not. >> it will be interesting to see because san francisco supervisors were already lining up ways they could use this proposition to change other rules in san francisco. but that is not going to happen. obviously we have a huge housing crisis. >> absolutely. we saw a big turnout last night. some of which was coming from younger voters, first-time voters. these are folks more likely to be renters and maybe would like to buy a home some day. this issue is not going away. >> the issue of our time. dr. jackson, we appreciate you
