dispute. >> investigators are trying to determine how and why this fire started. >> two residents next door to the building on menker avenue had to be rescued by firefighters when they were trapped by smoke and flames. >> david louie is at the scene, and loud arguments had broke n out just as the fire broke out. >> indeed, christian and dan, and they say that the tenants of the place where the fire had started had been having a loud argument, and the nature unknown. the woman trapped by the fires told us that she was prepared to jump from the second-story window, but she didn't have to, because the fire department got here very quickly. a passerby shot this cell phone video showing the smoke billow fwrg the melker apartment complex. moments before, neighbors said they heard a argument before the fire broke out. >> the smoke is pitch black, and

the chemicals and intense and it was awful. it was just very, very tense here. >> reporter: multiple calls came into the 911 dispatchers that the woman in the next unit was trapped. >> we have smoke from the apartment and the next door neighbor is trapped. >> reporter: that woman is magdalena guzman and she has lived here for 23 years. >> translator: she got really scare and the smoke in the apartment was very dark and she wanted to go to the room and see if anyone would help her out. >> reporter: she was rescued by a firefighter who set up a ladder to the window. >> we were in rescue mode and went to second alarm and rescued using a ladder two women from the upstairs next-door unit no the fire unit. >> reporter: her pug named tiny was also rescued down the ladder and another tenant saved her family of hamsters. >> i had to get the babies out. >> reporter: what do they mean to you. >> they are my whole world. >> reporter: and a construction wo

worker on a job nearby said that he saw a half naked man running from the scene as the fire started. >> another guy comes after the guy saying, hey, why did you do this, blah, blah and jumped into one of the neighbor's backyards and disappeared. >> disappeared. >> reporter: and with possible ties to the fire, he has been placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold for evaluation. that person has not been arrested however, and another resident did suffer some injuries and went to the hospital. in san jose, david louie, nbc 7 news. >> thank you. and firefighters are in alameda fire saved homes from a fast-growing grass fire. sky 7 was over crow canyon and cull canyon roads. the fire is in dry grass, and they quickly saved homes on crown's court, and quick response from alameda fire, and cal fire kept the three-acre grass fire from becoming a home

fire. they are using drones the try to identify the cause of this fire. and fire danger is ratcheting up once again as we are looking live outside with the embarcadero and san francisco, and nbc news meteorologist sandy patel is here, and this time of the year, we are usually out of the woods. >> yes, the fire danger period is getting extended, because it is unseasonably dry. and it is going to be the north and the east bay hills and also for solano and lake county and with the gusts out of the north and northeast and 40 to 60 miles per hour, and low humidity and any fires that do result will spread rapidly, and lake county and solano county will be involved. and now, look at the humidity in the hills, 12% at the peak, hais why there is a concern at the lower elevation, because it is dry.

thank you. and a woman convicted of multiple fraud cases is convicted again. she has been convicted of meeting men through korean dating web sites and later calling the police to accuse them of domestic violence. when the man was arrested, she would steal his belongings, and disappear. she was arrested in june in palo alto and had been on the run after failing to appear for a court appearance. an oakland man who was in prison for a murder he did not commit as been eligible for $350,000 from the state. he was convicteded of shooting two men in 2010. he had been identified by two witnesses, including a police officer as a man picked up bay nearby car and drifen from the scene. >> it appears that the police officer which objectively, it seems appears to put the
