twelve people are dead after a gunman walked into a southern california bar and opened fire. a sheriff's deputy is among those killed. >> we learned law enforcement has identified the shooter. that i.d. has not been publicly released. >> first reports of the shooting came in 11:30 last night. it happened at the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks, 40 mills southwest of los angeles. katie eutis has the latest development >> reporter: there are 13 total dead, including the deputy. there is a reunification station. this was college night at that club. we have a hotline for p looking to check on loved ones. i will share that number in a

moment. first, we have a photo of the ventura county sheriff's sergeant. this is sergeant ron helus, a 29-year veteran of the department. he is survived by a wife and son and was planning to retire just next year. the sheriff says helus and the chp officer entered the borderline bar & grill in thousand oaks 11:20 wednesday night. they arrived within minutes of the gunman opening fire. they exchanged shots. sergeant helus was hit. the chp officer pulled him out, but he died at the hospital. the gunman is also among the 13 dead. it is unclear if he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or the deputy's fire. they have not released his name. witnesses say they saw the shooter throw a smokeombeforeene crowd of people. hundreds inside. the sheriff confirms they have recovered a handgun from the scene. but at this point it is still early in the investigation. the scene is not entirely clear.

our sister station kabc spoke with hero matt winterstrom. >> i heard the shots. tall, probably 6'2", 6'3" dark figure, all black, with his hood on. and he basically was unloading. and all i did is grab as many people as i could and pulled them underneath the table until i heard the shots -- until i heard a break in the shots. then we got people out of there as much as we could. >> it sounds like you smashed a window out? >> yeah, we did. >> describe that. >> bar stools go through windows. that works. >> i interviewed somebody who went through the window. you helped get them out. you pulled a lot of people out. >> that's all we could do. the only thing i could have wished for is to have something better than a bar stool. >> what did this guy look like? >> tall built, bigger figure,

maybe wearing a vest or something possibly. all dark, blacked out. >> reporters have been on scene all night talking to survivors. we are hearing the compelling stories. survivors are being taken to reunification center and the local hospital. as you can imagine, people broke out the windows, climbed over broken glass to escape. ma aei treated for those types of injuries. there are 10 to 15 people we know of who have been injured in addition to the initial gunshot victims who died. here's that hotline number for you. that is 805-465-6650. again, 805-465-6650. the sheriff called the sergeant a hero. people who rescued people from the gunfire. in the next half hour, we will have an update as deputies

search for a motive in this mass shooting. >> our sister station talkeddddd the people who knew sergeant helus. >> did you know sergeant helus? >> yes. >> i'm so sorry. you are trying to help. what keeps you going at a time like this? >> members of the public, concerned loved ones. we are hearing trying to make sure that everybody is established. everybody gets the comfort and care they need and the answers right now. >> and right now, when it comes to the scene, your guys are also still out there. what are you trying to do at the scene when it comes to witnesses. you still have a lot of people out there, right? >> we have multiagencies, fbi, sheriff's office investigating. it is a long, drawn-out process. i understand everybody wants answers and we are doing our best. >> can you share what kind of guy sergeant helus was?

>> he was a great guy. >> he was? >> he was. >> so tough for the colleagues to talk about his life but also be in the moment. >> they are just doing their job. >> they are still doing their job this morning. kabc has been on the air all night long covering this breaking news story. >> let's check in with them right now. >> remarkably calm, clear thinking. >> a lot has to do with life experience. what had they done before? had they been in situations where they were potentially in danger. a lot of things gives muscle memory. you have to take action, you have to take action. in this case he hid. hiding is not the preferred pfe cutf harms way. we saw an opportunity, if you look at the public service announcement, the training videos that are out there, the one co-produced by abc 7 and l.a. county sheriffs, you see where they hid or take some sort

of cover. when they see an opening, they move. and i think instinctually, people see that -- i hate to say i, but they see it in entertainment as well. sometimes it glor guys violence, and gun violence in particular. but they see that and they kind of remember, i've got to get out of here. in this case i think what it was he was in a place where he thought was safe for the time being, but maybe not long term was that safe. he saw an opportunity. and the main thing is he took action. and that's the the big thing we talk about in training for an active shooter, which is take action. don't sit there passively and be a victim. take action. move in. in fact, worst-case scenario, you have to fight. we talk about different things to do in that scenario, which is don't wait for them. throw things at them, distract them, try to get the weapon. the reality is if two people get

we are tracking breaking news out of southern california. a mass shooting at a bar in thousand oaks. 13 people are dead, including the suspect and ventura county sheriff's deputy. authorities tell abc news the gunman has been identified but they have not released his name. the shootingas night at borderline bar & grill. >> the gunman was inside the venue. as of now they have no motive for the shooting. ventura county sheriff identified the deputy killed as sergeant ron helus, a 29-year veteran of the department who considered retiring within the next year. we'll have much more on this story throughout our newscast. high fire danger in the north bay. >> another threat of pg&e turning off the power to prevent wildfires. here are all the areas that could be impacted. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with news from the power company. >> reporter: hi, jessica. good news here behind me, the lights are on.

coffee shops and grocery stores will be open. you can see some flags. there is some wind. that's what they were worried about overnight. they did not turn off the power. last night there was a threat they were going to do that. where it really got hot was a townhall meeting. residents, business owners, all confronted pg&e to push them to do more for them when this happens. pg&e will not pay the claims from the businesses from the last power shut down from last month. business owners lost thousands of dollars when they turned the power off. they said they did it and they will do it again when it's too windy. they are worried wind can knock over power lines which could trigger a fire. >> we know how they rely on power and electricity. it's not an easy decision for us to make. we are only doing it for safety reasons, for high fire danger conditions in high fire threat

areas. >> reporter: the mayor tells us they pitched an idea, suggesting they bring in a big generator to power downtown the next time this happens. anything to help. businesses say their insurance companies are denying their claims. it looks like businesses will have to take the loss. they said they just can't afford to go through that again. live in calistoga, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. we want to take you back to our breaking news story. 12 people dead in a nightclub shoot anything thousand oaks. 13 if you include the gunman. >> kabc in los angeles has been on the air all night covering this breaking news story. let's check in with them right now. >> you actually saw the suspect come in. it sounds like he went straight for the front desk girl. >> yes, sir. >> describe it. >> he -- i had a clear line of sight at the front desk. i was talking to friends. i saw him walk in. i wasn't focused on him.

i saw him raising his hand maybe to put money on the counter like everyone did. first gunshot question on. i thought maybe somebody was playing a were prank with an m-80. i saw him fire at the girl at the front desk. >> did everybody at the bar realize what was going on? >> it took a couple seconds for everyone to realize it. as soon as i saw he had a gun, i knew what was going on. >> is and what did you do? >> he and my friend matt were a few feet away from each other. so we next to us. i tried to get as many people to cover under the pool table. when there was a break in fire, i went out to the patio. people out there didn't know what was going on. and i told them, you guys need to get out of here. run. >> what was the reaction? did people believe you? >> oh, yeah. they could see through the glass

what was going on. everyone was freaking out. it didn't take them long to realize i was being serious. >> no one it seems has a good description of the suspect. what did he look like? >> i didn't get a very good glimpse of his face. from what i saw it looked like he might have had facial hair and looked white. his build was probably between 6 and 6'2". and he was pretty stocky. >> dress indeed all black. >> all black. >> and as far as you could tell, he had one handgun. >> one gun is all i saw. and the breaks of fire seemed to indicate that he would to reload it. so he only had one. and you saw a chp officer writing a traffic ticket. >> i screamed out to him there is a shooter in there. he didn't seem to believe me at first. then saw people that there were people all around running and went in after. >> and that chp and the sergeant were the first responders on scene. >> i believe he was that chp

officer, yes. >> talk about inside the bar. college night, a lot of people are in there. this is a familiar place for j you?ttdo. of the people who come here are regulars. we all know each other. tonight was typical wednesday night during the school year. it wasn't as crowded assay a summer night would be. there was still about 120 people in there. >> do you know anyone who about would want to do anything bad to people here? any threats? >> i don't know of anybody who had any grudges against anybody. i didn't hear of any threats. it was a complete surprise. >> ten years ago somebody walks into a bar and starts shooting and people might be in disbelief. you seemed to immediately know this is the because it happens so often? why? >> i think it was because i saw he had a handgun. and i knew immediately what it was. i'm no stranger to gun shooting. that was i think what it was. when you hear gunshots and you

connect it with the image of a firearm, there is no mistaking it. >> eleven people, college students, so many of them killed inside of this bar. do you think you know any of them? >> a couple of our friends are still unaccounted for. so i'm afraid of the possibility that i might. >> and how do you reconcile that? >> i can't. it still hasn't completely registered. >> you say he went to the front desk. do you think that's because it was the first peurpb he saw? >> i think it was the first person he saw. very easy. all he had to do was walk in the front door and turned right. >> because he turned it allowed a lot of people like you and matt to get out, is that right? >> that, and the fact that he didn't go immediately for the crowd. he went to behind the desk.

early this morning. >> it was live and it was real. my son thought it was a joke. so i pulled him down and got some cover. i looked up and he was moving to the right. he shot the doorman, bouncer, just a young man. he shot the cashier, just a young girl. then he started moving to the right. he wasn't looking at us. then he went into the office where all the cash and stuff is. he didn't say anything at all. he just started shooting. and i should have stayed until he changed his clip. but i was worried about my boy. but i should have stayed. i apologize to anybody who got hurt. i'm sorry. >> there is not much have done

in a situation like that. >> they're all young. i'm 56. i lived a life. they're all young. this shouldn't have happened to them. it was just so -- taking lives that shouldn't have been taken. >> the father says he heard the gunman pause and reload the gun. eventually he and his stepson left the bar. obviously you heard him say he wishes he would have stayed inside to help more people. >> such a tough situation to be in. he is safe. his son is safe. so traumatizing to see the terrible shooting that happened inside that bar. right now we want to turn to abc news reporter alec stone. he is in thousand oaks just outside the borderline bar. the scene is still being processed. the last we heard there were still parents showing up at the scene trying to find perhaps their kid that is missing still. is that still the case there?

>> reporter: yeah. a number of family members have been showing up here outside the borderline bar & grill trying to get some information on their loved ones. they don't know if their loved ones are in there or not. they knew they were coming here last night. they haven't heard from them since. it could be an issue of not being able to communicate with their loved one. they're looking for information. we have also seen from that college friends. they knew their buddies were coming here last night or they were with them at this bar and they haven't seen them since and haven't been able to talk to them. there isomnitry reunite those with those who were inside. >> this is a long process for this investigation. the bar could be blocked off for several days. what are you seeing right there with police, the fbi? >> reporter: yeah. still a lot of activity here.

the fbi, joint terrorism task force is here in case this goes down the road of terrorism. right now it doesn't look like there is any indication of that. but if this turns out to be terrorism, then the fbi will take over the investigation. if it is not terrorism, it will remain the case of ventura county. a couple of things. we know that law enforcement has now identified the shooter. we are not going to i.d. him right now. but we do know it is a white man in his late 20s. this is all happening right now from several law enforcement sources who we have been speaking to. the gun was legally purchased. it was a .45 caliber glock that was used. now the process is beginning to figure out who this guy really was. if he lived in the area,th ve.

that's what they want to know. it's all hands on deck to figure out the motive. >> a shooter going into a bar with hundreds of very young people. it was college night there last night. so it safe to assume that some of the victims inside the bar are very young? >> reporter: yeah. we don't know their ages just yet. but likely yes. the bar was full of college students. it was known in this area that on wednesday night, you go to this bar. if you're in college, you party here. you have a drink, you line dance. that's what they were doing. they were having a couple of drinks. they were line dancing here at this bar when the gunman walked in and began shooting. and then we heard from a number of people who were inside. they say the countryhecodear the pop, pop of the gunfire coming from the .45 caliber hanigan. they ran out. people hid in the attic, in a

back room. they overturned the tables trying to use them as bullet-proof shields even though a table is not going to stop a bullet. they were doing everything they could to stay alive. people, much like what we saw last year in las vegas. i happened to be in las vegas that night. we saw the people racing out bloody. same thing was happening here. people were running quite a ways away down the street around thousand oaks just trying to get away from that threat as the gunfire was under way. >> really a terrifying night. alex stone reporting from thousand oaks just outside of borderline bar & grill. >> alex had new information for us. the weapon that was used, a .45 caliber glock that apparently was obtained legally. a white man in his 20s that lived in the area. he talked about the possibility that they did bring in the fbi, joint terrorism task force to investigate whether or not this is terrorism. obviously that will all come out with the motive.

the right when he came in. after hedoorman. he said nothing at all. he didn't say anything. i heard at least 8 to 10 shots. i got outside and still heard the shots. there was a pause. i knew he re clclireclipped. by that time my son had came out. i was running back in to get him because he didn't follow me like i asked him to. i think he panicked a little bit and just froze. >> how old is he? >> he's 26. he's fine. i got him -- i just started yelling, john, john, let's go, let's go. we ran to the car. that's when we saw the sheriff pulling up. and i believe that's the sheriff that lost his life.
